Nomad Design

I first came across Nomad about 10 years ago while I was importing some large GT oriented poppers.  They sent me one, nice lure, but really quite similar to what we were having produced.  Time progressed and recently I heard from one of our East Coast clients about their lipped lures.  A month or so passes and I heard from one of our long range clients who mentioned that they had the most productive lures on a recent Red Rooster III charter.  The lures outfished all others on the boat that trip.  Good angler, good feedback, I listened and tracked 'em down...

Nomad Design is an Australian firm with roots in charter fishing (Nomad Sportfishing Adventures). The folks spend time on the water, and they knew what they were looking for in the lure department.  From the time they sent me that one large popper until now, boy have things progressed nicely for Nomad. They developed their own products, tested in their waters, refined, and now are available here at CharkBait.

Do NOT over rig these lures or their action will suffer. The DTX minnows will perform best for wahoo rigged on 175 to no more than 270lb cable, 3 feet. Do not add a bunch of hardware, keep it simple, a double crimp and swivel at the end for attachment to your main line. If you go mono, be prepared to let the lure drop further back from the boat, and note that line diameter can adversely effect performance.

Nomad RIPTIDE

The Riptide is a new lure for us, and a very interesting piece, for sure.  This one is a cast and retrieve lure, the 105 being a fast sinking, long cast stickbait type lure.  It's designed to be the ultimate sub surface lure with a side to side wobble on the sink. This lure has internal weights, adding to the side to side wobble effect.  When fished in a walk the dog style retrieve the lure will turn nearly 180 degrees!  It can be fished fast or slow, in rough or calm waters. Versatility is a key aspect to this lure's design. Of course it's thru wired, and very tough. It is the toughest little stickbait made and up to any challenge.

That's mostly the manufacturer's pitch on the lure.  I'll add, it's reminiscent of the old bungee fall type lures, great producers tossed on the slide. Gosh I wish for some albacore down here in SoCal...  For our Pacific Northwest and East Coast clients, this lure begs to be tossed to albies!  Yellowfin, sure bet and I'd approach use of the lure the same way, on the slide, as a cast and retrieve bait, working the water column.  So many ways to put this little gem to good use...! The Riptide 105 weighs 1.3 ounces and is 4" in length. It's a tasty morsel for sure. It's going to catch a wide range of fish, no doubt, and it certainly caught the attention of the guys working here. We all want to go fishing and give it a go.

Nomad DTX MINNOW

The DTX Minnow is a revolution in trolling minnows, featuring the Nomad Autotune, Hydrospeed, Diamond Armour and Gorilla Through Wire advanced design technology. The pat. pending Autotune system was designed over years of testing by Damon Olsen and is a revolution in lure technology that will be applied to all deep diving lures across the Nomad range into the future. The Autotune design provides for 2 key features– maximum diving depth, and the ability to ensure the lure always swims straight.

In the first image you can see the plate of steel to which the split ring is connected. The plate "floats" so it's angle can change, always keeping the lure running true. The second image shows the forward position for connecting an assist hook rather than the single hook mounted at the belly. This would be the preferred hook type for a billfish or perhaps a larger grade tuna that might torque the singles. You can re-rig with a treble if so desired at the same positions as the singles for best tracking.

Bibbed minnows have traditionally been made with an eyelet fixed into the bib of the lure. It is impossible to control the manufacturing process to ensure that this fixed eyelet design is always perfectly centered and the fixed wire eyelet is not bent. Therefore, virtually every type of bibbed minnow made with a fixed wire eyelet in the bib will occasionally either not swim straight out of the box, or will fail to swim straight after one or a few fish. The eyelet is either not straight to start with, or becomes distorted during use.

The pat. pending Autotune system developed by Nomad Design has eliminated this problem. The design eliminates problems during manufacturing and ensure that no matter how many fish you catch, the lure will keep swimming straight. During testing we had lures that had caught over 50 fish, and had been worn through from wahoo and dogtooth teeth to the point of the lure body filling with water, but the lure kept swimming perfectly. The DTX minnow with Autotune will always swim straight, first time and every time, no matter how many fish you catch.

The other key feature of the Autotune system is the amazing diving depth that can be achieved. The ability of the system to perfectly centre itself every time on the bib means that the tow point can be designed to be as far back on the bib as possible, effectively just forward of the point where the lure becomes unstable and won’t swim. However, having the tow point as close to this “point of not swimming” is what achieves maximum diving depth, but it can only be done with a perfectly centred tow point. Traditional fixed eyelet trolling lures are unable to position the tow point this far back on the bib and have to allow room for error in the manufacturing process.

The pat.pending Autotune system has eliminated this problem and has set a new standard for diving depth in trolling lure design. In addition to the Autotune technology, the concealed Hydrospeed belly eyelet allows faster trolling speeds with single hooks, and ensures the lure is balanced with single hooks, so the DTX minnow just keeps swimming straight and true. The additional belly eyelet in front of the Hydrospeed eyelet is designed to be able to fit an assist hook when targeting large tuna and marlin. For tips on how to rig your DTX minnow for marlin and tuna, please see the website videos.

The DTX 165 and 200 minnows are rigged with our purpose designed inline single hooks and will reach max. depth between 4.5-8kn.  Ideal for tuna, wahoo, king mackerel, yellowtail, mahi mahi, marlin and sailfish, and every other predatory fish in the ocean, The DTX minnow is your first choice in bluewater trolling lures.

Rigging - do not over-rig these lures, you'll detract from their action and performance. Thinner diameter leader means greater depth with any billed diver and a heavy line improperly rigged can impede the Autotune system. Don't go in for a lot of hardware, snaps and such. A simple loop with crimp, on 3' of 175 cable terminating in a swivel for line attachment is plenty good enough and will outfish heavier lines. Don't run 'em on 12 feet of 400  lb cable or 200# mono...! A shorter 3 feet of say 175-275 lb is recommended, and is more than sufficient if you are targeting wahoo on the troll. Same story for mono and tuna, keep it simple, and fish reasonable line tests for your target. Thinner diameters get you more depth and will catch you more fish. Going heavy on the rigging will take away from the lure's action, not allow it to track well.  Go simple and skinny and you'll gain depth and tracking will be spot on even at some speed.

Okay, we've been stocking and selling these lures since they came into the US market. The response by our long range anglers has been terrific. For 2018's excellent wahoo season these were the lures of choice. We've supplied several of the long range boats out of San Diego, who took the lead from the Red Rooster, the first boat making good use of the lures.  The Nomad DTX became the dominant wahoo lure for the fleet.  How good are they? Note the image right. This particular lure was used by one of our clients from Colorado, TunaTom. The lure pictured above caught 21 wahoo and still swims perfectly. So, we added that flavor to our mix.

MADSCAD

Okay mates, you need to read the following in a proper Aussie accent, with all due respects to Monte Python...:
Styled on the typical deep bellied baitfish that are so prevalent all over the globe. The Madscad has been designed to be effective in all environments, in a range of sizes for a huge variety of species. This design has been refined over years of testing and many prototypes along the way. The subtle features like the flattened top of the head, to the scalloped sides and small tail wings all combine to make the action on this lure truly dynamic.

The Madscad sinks level, and actually wiggles much like a small stick minnow one would use for bream. It has an erratic swimming action when twitched, producing a pronounced thumping side to side darting action. You can employ a straight retrieve as well, which will give a more subtle swimming motion. The fast sinking 190mm/160g version can even be trolled at 15 knots.

The larger sizes are ideal for tuna, GTs, mackeral and kingfish, with the smaller sizes ideal for all sizes and shapes of reef dwellers, tuna, smaller trevally, salmon, kingfish. You name it and it’s probably been caught on a Madscad. By far the most popular shape in the Nomad Designs range, the Madscad is just the must-have lure for so many fisherman.

Built with the same HD ABS plastic, foam filled body and machine stamped metal plate on all Nomad Design lures the 190mm and 150mm sizes are tough enough for any bluewater predator.  No more ripped out hook points or busted lures with Nomad Designs.

All Nomad Design Lures come fitted with the highest quality super strong BKK hooks, chosen to balance perfectly with each lure, and provide exceptional swimming actions and hookup rates for all species. Nomad Design Lures can be fished straight out of the box with confidence. (manufacturer's text)

We're stocking the sinking lures in the Madscad series. These are quite capable cast and retrieve lures, however most will use the lures trolling for wahoo and tuna...and more. Madscads are great lures for the troll, but there's no deep diving bill like the DTX nor a planing head like a Marauder, they don't weigh 26 ounces like a big Catchy. Madscads use their body shape, fins and weight orientation to attain a balanced presentation at depth. For private boaters, these are some lures well worth running, keep one out there all the time. For long range application aboard the big boats?  I'm not sure yet, frankly. My understanding is that the lures do best trolled further back from the stern. A good private boater will adjust boat speed for best lure presentation. Typically, that's not the pattern on a long range boat where the skipper can't see the lure in the water. A long range Captain will expect the lure to work at his speed, and he typically likes the lures tighter to the stern than a private boater's staggered spread. I'll be looking for some feedback from folks who give the lure a try long range. Right now, for LR, the DTX is a no-brainer, a very good thing to bring along, if you just happen to like wahoo... The Madscad may turn out to be just as strong Long Range lure too. But, as of this writing I can't say with certainty. Need some use reports - these are new!

Madscads are an improvement of a style of lure that you don't see much of these days. They do run nicely in the water, the small rear stabilizing fins probably play a part in that.  Private boaters will make very good use of them as trolling lures, but do not underestimate their performance as a cast and retrieve bait - they are very successfully used in that application.

Introducing the CHUG NORRIS!

Our Australian friends are known for many things, gregarious personalities, sense of humor, saltwater fishing enthusiasts, appreciation for good beer, and an absolute hatred for things that don't do what they're supposed to do. Well, in the world of tough poppers, capable of dealing with the toughest fish in any sea, Nomad developed the Chug Norris (Yep, its a play on Chuck's tough guy persona). The Chug Norris is tough, they're not thru wired - the darn tghings have a machined stamped stainless steel plate inside the hard durable foam core construction. It's one of the strongest and toughest lures made, and is up to any challenge. Understand, these lures were designed from the ground up to deal with HUGE GT's, tuna and kings.   You'll get a huge pop out of these lures due to the unique body shape and hydrodynamic design.  YOu can work the lure for both big and sublte small pops, even twitching it across the surface. Each lure has been designed for for its intended use, in this case big, tough GT's. They are made to be very well balanced and tested to work perfectly with the chosen single BKK hooks. 180mm, 120gm.

FROM THE MANUFACTURER:
The Chug Norris is designed to be the ultimate popper! We believe it captures all of the best attributes of a popper, and we’ve put our years of experience and effort into designing what we believe is the ideal shape for a popper. The Chug Norris was designed to take the least amount of effort to achieve maximum results, it makes that awesome thumping ‘pop’ as the cup catches the waters surface. It sticks to the waters surface, reducing the dreaded popper tumble and it casts like a bullet. When subsurface the Chug Norris displays an awesome swimming action that just makes fish go wild.

The ultra deep cup face designed round at the bottom and square at the top, and curved body contours may not be the noticed at first, but these subtle attributes are what makes this lure unique. The Black Mamba colour caught a 60KG GT in its first week of testing at Jewell Reef in September of 2014, and has since developed a cult following among Nomad guides and guests.

Built from a new HD ABS plastic with the highest strength to weight ratio you’ll find in any lure manufacturing material. The 180mm/120g size features an extra thick outer shell and stainless steel metal plate, the body is then filled with foam for the ultimate in strength and durability. All Nomad Design Lures come fitted with the highest quality super strong BKK hooks, chosen to balance perfectly with each lure, and provide exceptional swimming actions and hookup rates for all species. Nomad Design Lures can be fished straight out of the box with confidence.
