SPOOLING/RIGGING:

Please note, you will see many spooling options for the reels listed below. It's not our intent to confuse folks, but you do have options here unlike some places and we take pride in the fact we can rig things according to your needs, applications and preferences. We have been pioneers in Super Braid / Spectra rigging and we offer a few methods of rigging the lines together beyond most retailers capability, including the standard long range Bimini to Albright knots, Served and Sato connections. We do not use simple uni-to-uni knots for connecting braid to leader, we take the time to make a better knot, one that will hold up over time and deal with larger fish. Simpler knots don't work as well. You can see videos of what we do on our YouTube channel - CharkBaitUSA. We can upgrade that connection to one of several options, the benefit with those connections is that the diameter is thinner and that allows the line to flow through your rod's guides more smoothly, has less resistance in the water and is stealthier. If you have questions regarding rigging, please give us a call or zap back an email and we can go over things with you. Bottom line, you have options with us and we're proud of our staff's ability to rig things to your needs rather than simply "slapping" things together. Our knots hold, as does our in-line rigging.

Line Selections:

The Baja Special is a reel that we like a lot. There's a sad love story behind this reel, a lost love...and then a re-kindled affair. While we loved the piece on the West Coast, the rest of the country was slow to warm to the skinny 4/0. But once Penn announced that they'd not be producing the reel, well, it's desirability increased greatly. But, they were gone, long gone for over  a years time. Penn finally bowed to popular pressure and brought this darling back for one run, and we're hoping to see one run per year going forward. They're still produced here in America.

At ICAST in 2014 Penn announced, and proudly showed off, three new Senator 113 reels - ALL MADE HERE IN AMERICA JUST LIKE THE ORIGINAL 113HN! Penn's making the 113N (Baja Special), 113 and 113 W (wide). All have their place in a guy's arsenal. All reels in this series offer a one piece aluminum frame, stainless steel main and pinion gear, live spindle with free floating spool for great casting, forged, machined and anodized aluminum spool, HT-100's offering carbon fiber stopping power, six shielded stainless steel ball bearings, line capacity rings like some of Penn's other newer reels... All offer 27 lbs of drag with a 4.3:1 gear ratio, 34 inches of line retrieve per crank. Bottom line, the Penn US Senators are the best Senators money can buy, and they are a value given their capability.

Mono Capacity: 300 yds of 40, 370 for the 113 and about 430 for the 113W. For Braid: 600 of 65, 750 of 65 and 1000 of 65 on the W. (though most guys go 80 for the backing on these reels).

Last one first, for our Hawaii guys going after ULUA, in the past Newell had this one covered with 500 series. But, with Newells passing there was a huge gap for our Ulua specialists. Some moved to Avet's HX, but some really wanted to see a star drag as was preferred in past years. Well, Penn's 113W US Senator is now the reel of choice for this demanding application, that's my take. Traditional design, improved production, USA reliability all contribute to a wonderful series of reels that cover a lot of functionality for anglers, from casting iron, yoyo jigs, dropper loop fishing and more.

Now, for what we've come to love here locally and for our Baja bound anglers: The  Baja Special 113N. This is your basic, enhanced 113HN or Yellowtail Special. Narrow frame for casting ease, plenty of capacity, excellent drag capability and reliable performance on a star drag reel. While lever drags are great, a big benefit of a star drag is that you can hammer down on the drag and not crunch a spool bearing nor interfere with freespool performance. Simple design, reliable performance under the most demanding conditions, these are the things guys look for when traveling to Mexico to tangle with tough fish - plentiful tough fish. You can't afford to have your gear go down, give up after a couple hard fights and spoil your time on the water. Reliability is a must, and the 113's have earned high marks for robust construction, bullet proof design and consistent performance. In terms of value, the reels are long on that characteristic and the new cosmetic treatment really stands out, in my opinion. The images don't quite do 'em justice. Great performance, strength, reliability, high line capacity, versatility - these are the characteristics the new USA built Senators excel in delivering.

2014 ICAST INTRODUCTION - When I mentioned last summer that there were some excellent new reels coming our way from Penn I wasn't kidding. Surprisingly we received the new two speed lever drag pieces first, the single speeds will follow shortly. Kind of nice to get the trickest pony in the stable first I must say. There's only a $50 difference in price between single and two speeds, so I'm thinking the 2 geared pieces will be far stronger sellers given the aggressive pricing. All reels have five bearings, good ones, and LARGE gears for power. They have a stainless steel gear train, tough, drilled out for weight savings, and are a wonderful combination of strength and speed. The reels feature Penn's Dura Drag material, offering a special phenolic bonding agent which prevents premature breakdown of the carbon fiber material while providing a barrier to water - less jerkiness on initial start up of the drag, smoother performance and less lost fish are the results of this Penn innovation. These are cast aluminum reels, like the other reels in the Fathom series, and they are sure bet winners. In the past couple years we've been seeing Penn listen, listen well, introduce gear we'd hoped to see from them - gear that anglers have desired. Penn has come a long, long way from where they were just a few years ago, and I'd suggest they've made good use of the time with new products like the Fathom series, Squalls, the new Torque LDII's and there's more coming...

Next up, the single speed versions of these reels also have an awful lot going for 'em. Like the two speeds, you get the benefits of a full metal body and sideplates, stainless steel main and pinion gears, Dura Drag washers, 5 shielded stainless steel ball bearings, a double dog ratchet anti-reverse and Penn's line capacity rings for predictable spooling capacity. The reels offer great freespool performance, and that will no doubt improve over time. Penn is pretty darn proud of their grease, and typically over does it on its use on new reels. As you do some fishing, the grease will indeed even out and you'll note even better freespool over time, and it's pretty darn good to begin with. One thing that's a pet peeve of mine is the way the reel accomplishes drainage. Penn is showing that they listen to what we say and write - they addressed the drainage wonderfully. We can assume that all reels will get saltwater intrusion, the trick is getting the salt flushed out after a days fishing. Penn accomplished that very nicely with porting both on the frame and the gearcase. AND WHAT GEARS! Note the size of 'em! BIG GEARS EQUAL CRANKING POWER, much like a lower gear ratio improves pulling power the size of the gears themselves make a huge difference.

Penn also introduced a reel specifically for the kingfish guys in the Southeast (also a dandy sailfish reel) the FTH40NLDHS. The High Speed 40N offers a blazing 7:1 retrieve ratio - that translates to 60 inches of line retrieve per crank! That's ripping! And, that can help you get bit and help you stay on top of a speeding fish coming at you.

For what it's worth, a guy can sure cover a lot of fishing with the 25N and 40N. With the use of braid as a backing, the 25 would do me darn well for 30 and 40 lb. lines, then the 40N for the 50 & 60. Nice casting pieces, nicely made. Having said that, I spent some time playing around with the little 15 this week, what a wonderful little reel. Small size, huge gears on the little micro beast for some excellent power. I like the gear ratio Penn picked and I really like the drainage and overall construction. The reel has a very nice feel to it. Sure, these are subjective remarks, but they are sincere. Penn took their time, listened and this time they looked at the right competitors in the marketplace (and we ain't talking about the bike maker). They no doubt looked directly at Avet and they are offering a very nice range of reels that address some of the areas where Avet could perhaps improve. I'm not knocking Avet one bit, they make great gear and they have their share of competing features, but I think Penn found three points to go after and they did just that by addressing gears size, drainage and drag capacity. I'm not putting one manufacturer above another especially since Avet was the firm to bring castable lever drags to the market first and really set the industry on it's ear with their quality and pricing. Avet's line has their share of strengths too (made from machined aluminum verses cast aluminum, 7+ bearings verses 5), but Penn is definitely on the right track and they've found some points from which to shine verses competing firms. Which way to go...sure glad I'm not making the choice, but I can say competition is a great thing from a consumer standpoint and Penn, Release, Okuma and Avet are offering reels that are so far beyond what's been on the market previously as to be nothing less than amazing.

Penn's Fathom Star Drag reels are a new series of full metal bodied reels that are made for years of hard use, and made to fish very well by all measures. The reels have GREAT freespool performance, excellent drags, and they're built Penn tough. When the levelwind Fathom reels first arrived last year, all they guys here were beating up the Penn rep asking why the heck Penn didn't come out with a non-levelwind version of the reels. They were some of the nicest levelwinds ever made, offered some things Daiwa could not achieve with their Saltist series. We really felt that a non-levelwind Fathom would give the Saltist and the Avet's some competition. Well, I guess Penn was listening because they introduced this new reel at ICAST and the response told them that they indeed were on the right track. The new Penn Fathom series star drag reels are excellent fishing instruments!

From the little 12 to the large 40 size fathom, all represent solid reels. The favorite of the guys here tends to run towards the narrow 25N, a bit taller than the 12/15 size and narrower than the 30. Very nice size for casting, with 50# Spectra suggested for backing, then you've got room for close to 100 yards of 30# on top. Wonderful for most casting work, and the reel will find it's home on plenty of jig-sticks rigged up just that way. Penn has a winner on their hands.

Here's another excellent new series of reels from the folks at Penn, the Fathom. If you are looking for a levelwind, there are none better than Penn's Fathom for the money. Based upon construction, drag performance and price, these truly are some great reels to own. Heck, I convinced myself to buy one for my winter time rockfishing! There are times a levelwind is the right way to go, when my wife is fishing with me, and when I'm being a bit lazy bottom fishing and don't want to deal with leveling my line on deeper drops. The Fathom covers those needs quite well, and they're built Penn tough.

Penn's new Fathom is a full metal bodied reel, with metal sideplates too. Like the Squall, it uses a  marine grade bronze alloy main gear with a precision machined stainless steel pinion gear. You've got the benefit of Penn's patented Versa Drag system with HT-100 washers. The Versa Drag allows you greater control over the level of drag you need for your particular fishing application. You've got three shielded stainless steel ball bearings, an instant anti-reverse bearing with silent back-up ratchet. The levelwind system is made from stainless steel with a titanium coated leveler. On the larger 40 & 60 size you even have reversible harness lugs, a nice feature for both safety while trolling and to help out if you intend to fish this reel at it's upper drag limit of 30#'s! The reel is made to take full advantage of fishing Spectra (or any other form of braided line). Another feature, like the same generation Squall, is the line markings on the spool. These eliminate the guesswork about how much line you have left on your reel, with accurate markings for 1/3rd, 2/3rds or full spool of line. If you respool often, you have a benchmark for backing with Spectra or your topshot, helping you eliminate wasted time and line. You'll also know when it's time to button down the drag on a larger fish... The new Fathom sells for $199 to $219.

Penn Squall Lever Drag 2 Speeds
NEW 2014 Models

At ICAST in July 2013 Penn introduced some new models in the Squall Series. The newest Squalls feature  Lever Drags and two speed function. Penn also produces Squalls in star drag and single speed lever drag fashion, and at ICAST they introduced levelwind star drags to the Squall Series, which we'll talk about a bit later...

SQUALL TWO SPEEDS:
There are three models produced in this series, sizes include 16VS, 30VSW and 50VSW wides. The new reels feature a stainless steel gear train. The hardened gears are drilled out for weight reduction, combining both strength and durability as well as lighter weight. Of course Penn is making use Penn's Dura-Drag material, a carbon fiber material with phenolic bonding agent to prevent premature breakdown while providing a better barrier to water. The drag washers are also treated with a special compound developed by Penn engineers to improve the smoothness of their drags - say bye to jerky drags and lost fish! You get a forged and machined aluminum spool, stainless steel main and pinion gear, Penn's Quick Shift 2 speed system. 4 shielded stainless steel ball bearings, a DOUBLE DOG ratchet anti-reverse, and lightweight graphite frame and sideplates.

Okay, that's Penn's pitch... Here's mine, the reels are nice, a big improvement over the older GLD and KG series two speeds Penn had in their line over the past 10 years. They are indeed smooth in operation, nice feel to the gears, nice handle, leverage, overall construction is good. I'd say that these reels, while really not breaking any new ground, take off where the old TLD20/30/50 series from the bike maker took off. They are affordable, perfectly suited to handle a wide range of fish - though these are NOT cow reels (in the case of the 50). I'd feel quite comfortable fishing them from say 50-80# with appropriate drag for those line tests. But, like any graphite bodied reel I'd have some reluctance to fish the big 50 at it's rated 30 lbs of drag. At 25#, it should live a long, long life. But, with a 200+ lb tuna fished heavy on a long range boat it's going to be questionable, and time will tell just how far you can push 'em. If your target fish is under that level, then you've arrived at a great option which these reels will satisfy well. I'm especially pleased with the choice of gearing provided. Their low gear is quite low, and that's a great thing for turning a fish's head your way and keeping it coming towards you.

Penn's Star Drag & Lever Drag Squalls!

For those who counted Penn out, be prepared to eat some crow. Penn's back, big time!
Where Penn's lineup was lacking was the popular mid priced reels, from $150 to $220, they are back in the game in a big way with the Squall and Fathom series reels. The Squall series began re-writing the books in this regard with two excellent smaller size reels to build upon the strength of the old 525 Mag. Now Penn's expanded upon that with some larger size Star Drag reels, and they listened to us and produced the 25N size (like they recently began offering in their Fathom Series and Torques). I don't think there are any better star drag reels for under $200 built, with the star drag running $149! The smallest size Squall Star drags offer a very useful magnetic cast control system, the larger reels do not offer that feature. But, all reels in that series have excellent freespool performance - even their lever drags spin well! And, they make use of aluminum spools, marine grade bronze and stainless steel gear components, and their live spindle -  free floating spool design for casting performance. And the reels benefit from HT100 drag elements and Penn's useful Versa-Drag for the utmost of user fine tuning for their own particular requirements. The anti-reverse is also robust and redundant with both a one way anti-reverse bearing AND silent back up ratchet (dog).

Penn went even further, they also build the Squall series in a lever drag form, and they've kept the price within reach of the most budget conscious fishermen at $159-179. They've not neglected the lefty angler, by providing their 40 and 60 LD's in left hand form. It really is nice to see what Penn's been working on the past couple years, they now are making the reels that anglers have been asking for, and West Coast anglers in particular got their wish with the 25N size which is now becoming part of Penn's production in the casting oriented Squall, Fathom and Torque Series reels.

Note the 3 position clicker on the 30 size above

Penn's Squall Lever Drag reels were first introduced at 2010's ICAST Show. Penn really showed off a lot of wonderful new gear at that show, with new rods and reels that represented their best effort in over a decade. The Squall LD's are available in four sizes, with two sizes offering lefty retrieve. They are priced aggressively, offering excellent features and construction at a very aggressive price. The reels have some common features, such as the versa-handle system allowing two different handle positions allowing for both speed or power depending upon your needs - and it's easy to change! The reels are made from a composite graphite material, zero issues with corrosion, good strength, light weight. All reels feature 5+1 bearings and they are made for handling braided lines well, with spools that will help prevent rotation on the spool. The reels design was well thought out, with the lever designed NOT to protrude above the frame of the reel. That means there's less chance of the line to loop over the lever and hang up, causing a lost fish or backlash. You also get a 3 position clicker, a very nice feature allowing different tensions on the clicker - helpful for use on a kite, larger or smaller size baits... The reels use the same line capacity rings for easy recognition of spooling level as several of Penn's newest offerings, and on the two larger reels you get the benefit of "Switch Blade Lugs." This is another innovative feature, with a simple pull the lugs pop up for use, and when you don't need 'em (and don't want the possible hang-up of line) you can depress them back into the frame - without use of any tools! Nice thinking Penn - the thoughtful engineering is readily apparent!

The quality of the Squall leverdrags goes well beyond ANY graphite bodied reels that have ever been built. The gear material is better, larger and stronger. The drag system is better, and they use greased washers and a sealed system so they're well protected against internal corrosion. For long term performance, no doubt the "bike maker's" old TLD's have been left in the dust. And, the soft grip football style handle is very nice to hang onto while battling a tough fish. All in all, whether you are looking at the star or lever drag versions, Penn's new Squalls set the standard by which other manufacturers reels should be judged - and Penn wins hands down.

Penn Squall Levelwind
...and line counter, too!

NEW Model!

Penn keeps hitting the mark, on target, priced right, and with the features and performance we've come to demand. The new Squall series, Fathoms, Torques and Internationals all achieve some great things and this newest Squall does so, too.

We're just getting these new reels into our inventory so supply may be short, as I expect demand from those folks seeking a line counter levelwind to be strong. No doubt our clients in the Pacific Northwest and Great Lakes will look towards replacement of some of their gear, and with the pricing Penn has going it won't be a painful upgrade of old reels that have been getting eaten up by the elements. The Squalls use of graphite frame and sideplate make the corrosion concerns minimal. And with forged and machined aluminum spool, marine grade bronze allow main gear and stainless steel pinion gear, HT-100's carbon fiber drags, shielded stainless steel bearing system and instant anti-reverse bearing AND silent back up ratchet, you've got security for many years of great fishing from this new reel...like all the Squall series products from Penn. These new reels are capable of up to 15 pounds of drag, quite enough for their intended line class and quarry.

Penn Reels
 SENATORS, JIGMASTER,

The Senators

Penn Senator II The 4/0 and 6/0 Senators are standard issue trolling reels that can also perform in a casting role. Like the Jigmasters, you can do a lot of updating with these products, but you have to start somewhere. The basic product is a great value, and it can grow with your needs too. I only work with the HL style product, these are the ones you want, not the scale down models - especially if you've a mind for upgrading over time. Both the 4/0 and 6/0 reels excel in the trolling role, both reels are supplied with rod clamps, star drag with HT100 material. They are an essential piece in your tackle assortment. (Please note, the idea of upgrading these reels was a fairly common practice back 15 or so years ago. These days those options really don't exist like they used to since other reels have come into the market which are frankly quite a bit better. But, from a cost standpoint, there's no getting around the fact that the old Senators offer a lot of value and they'll get the job done on most fish guys encounter.  I will suggest, taking a look at what Okuma now has on the market, two speed reels in similar sizes near $200 which frankly kill the old Senators! )

In 2009 Penn began producing all the Senator models overseas. This was the only way Penn could maintain the pricing levels on these reels. Since production is done at their factory, they have control of the manufacture, and quality has not dropped off. All Senators listed have 2 bearings, lightweight graphite frame, machined and anodized aluminum spool, precession machined stainless steel pinion gear, marine grade bronze alloy main gear, with stainless steel frame rings and HT100 drags. All Senators are made in China, same for Jigmasters. The only products Penn produces in the USA are the 113HN Baja Specials ( now expanded and known as USA Metal Senators in three sizes) and their International and Torque Series.

Penn 500L  Here's an old standard, revisited. The Penn 500 is probably one of the best values in the market. The 500 series feature a quick take down design, allowing you to exchange spools of line quickly and efficiently.  Okay, so what's the downside...there are two compromises from these reels. First, using light line 12-15 lb. may pose a problem with line getting stuck between the spool and sideplate, it's a nasty habit. Secondly, you get bushings not bearings. That's why Accurate has built a booming business back when these reeels were more popular and frequently used by anglers. (Those days are long past).. You really do get what you pay for, but you can upgrade!

The Jigmaster is a dandy product, but when you step up to more modern series you really do gain a lot (4 bearings, faster retrieve, tighter tolerance for light line use and durability...). You should expect to get something for your money when you spend more for a reel, and that's the case. But, the Jigmasters allow you to upgrade as your needs progress. That makes this a great starter reel, or basic equipment for a fishing dabbler.

Features: HT100 drags, right side take-down, black anodized aluminum spool, counter balanced handle with non-slip soft grip knobs, star drags, clicker...(Jigmaster 500 @ 275/30lb, 4:1 ratio, 22 oz.; 501 @ 500/12 [20 is a lot more realistic] 4:1, 20 oz.

Orders over $150 are shipped FREE!* Orders less than $150 are billed for shipping. Upon placing your order you'll receive an immediate confirmation via email. You are not billed at that time, the confirming email may not reflect oversize or overweight charges or other issues requiring direct contact. We process orders manually, preferring to have a human actually check things over and contact you should there be questions. Within 24 hours of placing your order you will receive a follow-up email confirmation and final  invoice (pdf doc) reflecting your total charges (Monday-Friday). You are not billed until we actually send you your final invoice.  Orders shipped to CA addresses will have California Sales Taxes applied, out of state orders are tax free. During the ordering process you can select expedited shipping if required. (Within the USA we usually ship via Federal Express ground. International, and oversize/weight items will be billed for shipping and you will be sent an emailed invoice reflecting total charges prior to actual billing. We will not ship without you having had a chance to review the invoice). Hawaii and Alaska shipping will be accomplished using USPS Priority service, and our standard shipping cost policy will apply unless the item ordered does not fit in their standard size boxes. If additional shipping fees are required we will contact you.)

As a means to reduce spam, we change the above incoming email addresses regularly.
Please don't bother adding them to your address book.
We do apologize for any inconvenience this policy creates. But, it's the only way we've found to post an email address on-line and not receive so many solicitations from some family member of a deceased "Nigerian" leader trying to move great sums of  $ out of the country...

Thanks for visiting and supporting...
