Last things First:

Warranty, CharkBait and Toro Tamer Offshore Inshore and Surf Explorer Rods rods carry a one year guarantee of quality of materials and construction. Rods are checked prior to shipment, but if a failure occurs because of defect in blank construction (doubtful) we will gladly replace the rod. Breakage caused by mis-use (high sticking, vicious car doors and use beyond intended line class and drag applications) will have support through replacement at an accommodation price of 50% of the purchase price - one time only. For Offshore Explorer rods, use of a lubricant between the metal ferrules is recommended as is proper cleaning given saltwater exposure. Returned rods are at clients expense, and must be sent to our Huntington Beach location for evaluation and warranty coverage. We will cover the return postage for your replacement. If the rod has been subject to abuse, meaning fished beyond intended drag load, there will be no warranty offered.

The Okuma Series rods carry a limited lifetime warranty. This coverage is through the manufacturer.

Kingfisher travel rods carry no warranty beyond initial receipt of goods. This is not atypical, given that any rod can be broken through mis-use and abuse, and the original quality is assured. To offer warranty coverage for abuse would result in substantially increased purchase costs.

TORO TAMER Offshore Explorer ®  Travel Rods

We're very excited about this little project. Personally, I've long been a fan of travel rods, always kept one in my truck for opportunistic fishing. Given the airlines making life a bit more difficult for travelers to take their gear with them to distant lands. And, given the usual lack of good gear once you arrive at distant shores, our search for something better suited to what we like to do was inevitable. We searched for a quality travel rod that was more than a repackaged freshwater bass rod made for fishing 12-20#'s...couldn't find much. We started out with Penn's inshore pieces (discontinued now for many years) and more recently Okuma's Nomad series of travel rods. Okuma did a nice job with their Nomad series, dandy pieces for fishing 15-50# lines, and a nice travel bag, too. That product gave us hope that we could produce rods ourselves which were more focused to specific applications - something larger manufacturers can't economically do. Well, we achieved that with the first three productions of the Offshore Explorer series of rods as CharkBait products. In 2014 Toro Tamer took over the travel rod project, and through that company expanded and refined the product line. Now several years have elapsed and ToroTamer is very much at the forefront of travel rod design. It's something we've felt that was needed for quite some time and it is a person passion. Working closely with a overseas builders we have produced travel rods like none other, rods that folks will certainly find useful and will broaden fishing opportunities. We've made light line models, surf oriented rods, trolling models, boat rods and all applications in between. ToroTamer's Offshore Explorer, Surf Explorer and Inshore Explorer series rods represent narrow focused, targeted designs for serious saltwater oriented anglers.

- for jigging, casting & bait

Our newest effort in travel rod design for 2016, two models available in both spinning and conventional reel format made for fishing 15 to 40 lb lines. The new rods feature use of Nano Resins and carbon fiber for durable, high strength fishing success. These new 7 foot  rods travel at only 24 inches in their hard case (with protective soft case, too). Toro Tamer's newest rods are nice casters, made for that application. They belong in your hands rather than a boat's rod holders. But, they do come with gimbals and protective cap should you need to make use of a rod belt or boat's rod holder.

The newest Toro Tamer Offshore Explorer is a casting rod, not really intended as a trolling piece like the heavier models we produce. The piece does well casting, jigging and one can swim a live bait quite nicely, too. The guides are "spectra safe" meaning they can deal with even the cheaper super braids without failure or premature wear. Reel seats are appropriately sized for most all models of fishing reel a person would use on a rod designed for the line classes intended.

7 foot length, travel at 24 inches, Nano resins, carbon fiber, hard case, spinning or conventional guides, 15 to 40# line test application, moderate to fast actions...very nice, indeed.

- 50-80# - for trolling, jigging, heavy bait

The Offshore Explorer travel rods feature a Pac Bay "uni-butt" style all aluminum aft sections.  Specifically, this is a Pac Bay Channel Lock Aluminum Butt. These trolling oriented stand-up rods are four piece, 6 1/2 feet in length. It's perfect for fishing 50-80# applications. With the Pac Bay butts, they're great for trolling duty. You can drag lures, feathers, lipped divers effortlessly. They feature EVA ringed fore grips for added security and comfort. The guides are rated for Spectra, and the rod’s unique gimbaled screw together construction is extremely solid. Unlike other "ferrule" rods, these screw together within a ferrule, so they twice reinforce their strength and proper alignment of these strong and forgiving fiberglass blanks. This unique connection feature also makes it easier to take the rods apart after a long day’s fishing. For our most recent production a hard case in included rather than the soft case of previous models, and the rods action has also been improved.

Toro Tamer's new four piece travel rods are sure to be welcomed by the serious angler looking for travel-friendly fishing rods capable of landing larger fish.  Fishing from a panga or  sportfisher? These rods are perfect for your needs. Finally there’s a serious saltwater travel rod that can stand on its own merits as a functional alternative to one-piece designs. And, as far as traveling with a quality rod is concerned, these pack down into their 24 inch case! That's very airline friendly and even fits into most suitcases if you don't want to carry them along onboard the aircraft to stow in the overhead bin.

Compare the components being used, and you'll get the picture. These rods are a value, and there's nothing like them on the market in terms of dealing with larger fish and functional troll duty. Let me restate this, since I've done some homework for you. You can find some heavy tackle offshore custom travel rods, at prices of over $1000. The one's I've seen do not compare favorably to what we are offering with our own Saltwater Travel Rods, which are designed for boat use. If you travel to your fishing destinations or just like being prepared for opportunities to hop on other folks boats, our new saltwater travel rods will be favored companions on any trip offshore. Order yours now!

For more information:

Ferrules - there are three basic types available.

Most light duty rods use a simple direct, blank-over-blank design. One hollow piece fits into the other hollow section, lengthening the rod in sections with differing diameter. For strength, it's best to have the tip sections going over the base pieces of the rod (tip over butt) rather than skinnier sections fitting into the larger sections (tip into butt). We use this connecting style for our multi-piece light line and surf-casting rods, our Inshore Explorer.

The European Spigot Ferrule design is an enhancement of the blank over blank design, and is used in the Surf Explorer Series of rods as well as Okuma's Nomad and Xpress Series rods. In this system the pieces of the rod are joined by way of a solid insert in one end section, fitting into a hollow receiving section. One potential weakness of the standard ferrule connection is strengthend since the "spigot" provides increased reinforcement at the joints of the rod.

On our heavier tackle uni-butt style boat rods we use a unique Gimbaled Ferrule system with metal caps for added security of connection and alignment of the rod. You'll find this feature on our Offshore Explorer Series of rods. These are available exclusively in the 50-80# application, Offshore Explorer from Toro Tamer.

And, a few words from one of the lucky folks that purchased one of these innovative rods:

Hey Mark, I thought you would like a report on one of your products. I recently went on the Royal Polaris Seeker Rods long range trip (Sept 17-24, 2016).

I recently purchased several on your travel rods and ended up taking the ToroTamer Offshore Explorer 50-80 lbs rod on the trip.  I had paired it with a Avet LX6/3 2 speed loaded with 80 pounds of Jerry Brown hollow core and 80 pound flora (the reel was one I already had).  Charkbait was the only company I found offering heavy travel rods.

Well on the last day I hooked up with a big yellowfin which took a big run and came very close to spooling me.  Using the back bone of the rod we manage to get the fish turned and started fighting it in.  I realized early that the reel was under sized for the fight but the rod felt great.  I was concerned of flat spots and not being able to get a good arch pressure on the fish, other had concerns about the rod.  after over an hour I brought the fish to the gaff.  The fish weighted in at 123 pounds and it won 1st for the largest fish jackpot.  The rod got a lot of attention.  It preformed not different than the one piece rods I was using.

Being in Houston TX means I have to travel for trips like this.  Also I like the concept of having the break down rods to carry back and forth to the boat down on the coast.

I stopped by the shop after we got back from the trip with Grant Hieshima and decided to upgrade the reel I using to the new Avet HX5/2 MC Raptor for next years trip and here in the GOM.

Thanks for offering a great product

David Lowe

Surf Explorer ®  for Casting

Our Surf Explorer has been updated for 2013 with introduction of a new heavier 30-50# class rod. This is in addition to the  updated 8-12#, 15-20# and 25-30# class for both spinning and conventional reel use. These are very light and rather exotic travel rods designed for surf fishing enthusiasts. Certainly it has additional applications, but it's made for walking the beach and opportunistic fishing. The rod is a four piece design, using the European Spigot ferrule connections. It's 2.7 meters in length, almost 9 feet, and now comes in a hard case for safe transport and storage. The rod can handle lure weights of 20-100 grams. It's graphite and fiberglass constructed for lightness, sensitivity and long term use. The guides are lightweight, but capable of handling Spectra lines. The handle section is a bit long, in keeping with it's intended application, and you can adjust the positioning of your reel to optimize balance - easily moving the reel forward or back on the rod on the spinning rods. The conventional rods feature a trigger grip - these do not allow the adjustment feature. The Surf Explorer rods have a parabolic action allowing them to fish lighter and heavier and still "feel" right, and now you have more choices for the test being fished with the additional light and medium action rods.

Lure weights and line weights: The rods are made to load up best when used as intended. They are light finesse type rods, not heavy surf rods. Their bend is fairly parabolic, do just fine with braided lines or mono. Each model is designed to fish their intended line test - and this really should be specified in terms of drag load, that's a more meaningful specification and predicts the bend of the rod better. So, plan to set your drag at 25-30% of the line test intended for the rod and you will enjoy the benefits of a properly tuned rod/reel match. Lure weight varies by model, the lightest rod matching up with lure weights of 1 ounce and under. The 15-20 does very well up to 1.5 ounces, can push 2. The 25-30 is quite comfortable fishing 3/4 to 3 ounces, with 1-2 being a very nice range. For the 30-50 1.5 to 4 ounces is a good range. That model can do a bit higher but you should note how it's loading up on your casts and adjust accordingly. These rods do best with someone who has some experience and they travel very, very well. They are not intended as boat rods, they are inshore surf rods, and in that arena they represent some of the best rods ever produced.

Hey Mark, I just thought I should show you what I caught down in Rancho on my new Surf Explorer. Thanks again, Max

I wanted to let all the staff at Charkbait know that I received my Surf Explorer travel rod today and I am happier than a kid in a candy store. This rod is top notch in quality as far as construction, ease of assembly, and amazingly light which will be very nice for long days of casting lures and jigs for stripers here in Oklahoma.  This rod looks sleek and sporty with the anodized red aluminum accents and the carbon fiber on the reel seat and is perfect match for my Abu Garcia 6500 C3 reel. The rod tube is really cool as well with the Charkbait logo embroidered on the front. I cannot think of enough words to describe how nice this rod is. In fact a coworker of mine saw me open the rod package today and even commented on how nice the rod looked and he is not even an avid fisherman. I have owned a lot of different fishing rods in my life and would rank this in the top 5 overall. Some of the rods I have owned have been Falcon, G Loomis, Daiwa, and Bass pro-Offshore angler-ocean master. This Charkbait rod is by far one of the best, and I will definitely tell all my angler friends in Oklahoma about your amazing products and recommend that they purchase from Charkbait. I rate my ordering experience, top notch as well. Customer service was amazing in getting my ship to address corrected promptly so as not to affect the delivery date. I look forward to future business with Charkbait.

 Thank you very much

Leeana,   Please forward this to your boss.
This morning I took the Surf Explorer down to my “test site”.  I saddled up with an Abu 6600C5 Mag X holding 14# Suffix Siege and  a 75g egg sinker, used a common fishing rig. (You folks would call it a “Carolina rig”).  I just wanted to see how the rod casted and it was much more than I expected.  I’m an average caster who’s getting older but even with  an 9 mph wind in my face I was averaging a measured 270’  the longest was 291'.  Not too shabby for me and an 8’75” rod. I seldom have to cast that far but it’s nice to have the confidence that I can do it if needed.   If I used braid I could have squeezed out the extra feet for an even 100 yards.  The closest rod I own in comparison is a St.Croix, PSRC86M2, rated 1/2-2 oz. and I felt the Surf Explorer was lighter and  easier to work with over a 2 hour period of constant casting.  The sensitivity of the  four section rod was also equal to the two part Premier.  There are lots of crabs around to chew on your bait and I could feel them at work.  Now I only have to catch a fish!.   I just wanted to say I’m pleased with the product and very pleased with the customer service from CharkBait!  I plan on sharing my good fortune with friends at other forums!

Inshore Explorer ®  for Casting

We've further expanded our Travel Rod lineup to include three inshore and one surf casting rod, all available in conventional or spinning guides. The 3 models of Inshore Explorer provide the traveling fisherman different actions for different line tests. All models are three piece 7'6", using light and strong graphite blanks, quality cork handles for light weight and trigger grips on the conventional guide rods. These rods are VERY light and sensitive. Guides are made to handle both Spectra and monofilament lines. You have 3 choices in line test use on these excellent rods, with nominal ratings of 12#, 15# and 20# application. In the past, there have been a couple travel rods covering the lighter line tests similar to these (but shorter in length) from Penn International. They ranged from $199 to $139 in price, but could not be produced at those prices and were discontinued by Penn. Those rods have been off the market for a few years now, but they provided a base for the design of our series of rods. Ours are longer, lighter, and since there is no middleman in the process, no distributor markup, ours are a much better value. Ours are also much better looking! These rods are a very good value at $129 complete with a very nice storage/travel tube.

Finally made it to the Bahamas to do some bone fishing. I bought your Inshore Explorer 12 lb travel rod and used Spectra 12lb line! This outfit worked great! Landed 8 bone fish my first time out ever with the guide. Thanks for providing such great products.

I ordered a 15lb spinning travel rod from you folks for a trip to Tobago last November. I was pleased when it arrived, but after fishing it ….the quality and performance of this rod were fantastic! I was primarily on a sailboat cruise, but was able to fish from the boat, a kayak, and shoreline. Caught barracuda, eye jacks, mullet, mutton snapper, houndfish, and even missed a few tarpon hits, and had an absolute ball. The flex offered me the ability to cast small lures, but also power fish away from mangroves and rocks. The protective case it came in was quality too, could carry on and was well protected. Thanks for making and shipping a quality product. Will used your web store in the future! Even though it is clear across the country!!

Thanks a bunch,

 Okuma Nomad Travel Rods

We've been getting requests from folks looking for good offshore rods, that can travel easily -  for years. Unfortunately, there really haven't been any produced that were up to snuff (with the exception of Penn's discontinued light line Travel Rods). There has never been an offshore capable travel rods made to fish the heavier line tests we're most apt to need, you know, the basic stuff like 20-50# class casting rods. They were not made. Well, Okuma created a series of travel rods that will make breezing through high security airports tolerable, cut "oversize" charges from the bill, and provide you with some quality gear that can deal with larger version saltwater fish. Remember all those times you went fishing at a distant shore, only to find the equipment deficient? Well, now you can come prepared! These are effective fishing rods for typical offshore fishing.

There are several unique features these rods incorporate for your advantage. The first thing I noticed is that these three piece rods come with an extra tip section! With the added tip, you can now fish two different line tests from the same rod. Or, you can change up your action to match your particular style for the day's fishing. Nice thought guys! Unlike many multi piece rods which simply won't stand up to the pressure a saltwater fish can provide, these rods use a European Spigot Ferrule connection between sections of the rod. This is stronger, and provides a one-piece feel when fishing. It's a bit harder to put the pieces together, but it's the right design for what we're doing here. You also get an ALPS aluminum reel seat. This is an expensive piece of rod building componetry, and is testament to the rods overall quality and sense of purpose. .

No more relying on whatever gear is at hand when you go on exotic fishing trips. With the Nomad Travel Rod series by Okuma, now you can pack your own rods with ease as you head out on ANY fishing adventure.

Essentially two rods in one, each Nomad Travel Rod comes with two seperate tip sections that provide distinctly different actions, but through the use of the European Spigot Ferrule connection points, the rods have an accurate and true "One-Piece" feel and action.

We have a short, very poorly made video showing off the Nomad travel rods - click here!

Note: The triangular shaped ALPS seat used for these wonderful rods will not fit the standard Avet reel base on the SX and MX series reels - you will need to make use of their narrow reel foot, and that's an option.

Nomad Travel Rods Features:

  • 3-Section Break Down For Easy Travel
  • Two (2) Separate Tip Actions Per Rod
  • European Spigot Ferrule Connection For True "One-Piece" Rod Feel
  • ALPS 316 Stainless Steel Guides With Zirconium Guide Inserts

Okuma Travel Rods
New Xpress Series

Okuma introduced a new series of travel rods at ICAST in July 2013, and quite frankly by doing so convinced me not to produce our own very popular 30-40# class rod for the future. Ours did some things better in my humble opinion, made for a better dual purpose troller and caster, and with an extra section it also saved a few inches in traveling. But, Okuma did two things that I simply could not match. Given that they own their own rod factories, they can produce things at a much better cost - when it's in their interest to do so. Further, their rod factory is quite good, as demonstrated by the Makaira series rods. So, upon seeing the new Xpress rods I cancelled our order for the CharkBait 30/40.

Here's the run down on the Xpress Series: These are all three piece rods, seven feet in length, offering very good quality guides and blank construction. The Nomad series from Okuma makes use of better quality ALPS components, the Xpress series does not, the Nomad series rods also offer an extra rod tip in their package so you can cover an additional line class. But, take away those features and the cost drops, and it drops BIG. The new Xpress series rod run under $100! That's simply amazing in my book, less than what I can produce a rod for, and that's due to the size of this behemoth company. Okuma is a huge company, and when they decide to do something, they can indeed blow the socks of any other manufacturer in the sportfishing world. The rods all come in a nice storage bag for easy traveling and pack at about 32 inches for these three piece seven foot length rods.

There are two rod series within the Xpress line, inshore and offshore oriented rods. Inshore's have the cork grips, offshore oriented rods the hypalon handle material.

Okuma Nomad Inshore Travel Rods

Okuma expanded their Nomad series to include some excellent inshore models featuring a split grip, OC9 Technology - offering increased durability from graphite blanks and carbon outer wrap. This construction is unique and proprietary in nature, and should be something well received by fishermen as time goes one. All models are 7 feet in length, all offer 2 tip sections for expanded application (example, Medium and Medium Light tips included) and all are 3 piece designs. The waterproof travel bag is of nice construction, and the rods ALL FEATURE European Spigot Ferrule design for added durability and the feel of a one piece rod. Excellent construction, excellent design and equally excellent value with these dandy products from Okuma.

The Okuma Inshores use ALPS components, with two tone blue and silver anodizing color, a trigger on the baitcasting/conventional rods and no trigger on the spinners (of course).  The ALPS guides feature Zirconium inserts for Spectra/braid friendliness and durability. The grips are made from cork for sensitivity and light weight. Nomad Inshore Travel rods are backed by a limited lifetime warranty. Jeeze these guys keep getting things right!

Mini Tuna Sticks

CharkBait's Mini Tuna Stick, or MTS for short. Several years ago we offered a pretty interesting piece, the old Toad Tamer series of short rods. The little rods were fun to fish, but unfortunately we ran into problems with continuity of production. Our old models used Shikari blanks which were quite nice but a bit more brittle than a fiberglass blank for this type of use. For this production we've upgraded to USA made Seeker blanks. The Seeker's will prove more robust and are capable of harder pulling. There have been a few similar shorty rods on the market using a range of blanks from very good to downright cheezy. We're proud to say, these are the best shorty panga rods made, and we've done some improving for 2013 as you'll note below on our MTS4050. (Given the sale of Seeker, and they no longer producing fiberglass blanks, we will change to another blank supplier in the future. The rods offered below are based upon the original Seeker blanks and supply is LIMITED)

(for lack of a more appealing's John our shop's manager showing off one of our MTS rods, above. Below, well, I found a slightly better model while my wife was on vacation - sorry John)

The MTS is a shorty, 4' in length using high quality Seeker blanks, and made here in America with top quality components. We use Fuji reel seats and AFTCO light weight roller guides through all the 3 models offered. We go beyond most manufacturers of this style rod, having three distinct models, based upon different blanks and reel seats, in five different colors. Our lightest 15-30# rod features a Fuji trigger grip for added control in casting and feel. The next size us also uses a Fuji seat, but in a more conventional composite form for use with heavier lines @ 20-40#. The 40-50# MTS has a full aluminum reel seat and aluminum gimbal. We also have upgraded the guideset to the New ALPS rollers which will accommodate use of the heavier lines and deal with larger diameter knots and leaders more easily. All models feature a gimbal butt, even the trigger grip MTS 1530.

Please note, these are custom made rods. We maintain some inventory, for instance the new MTS4050 in our Metallic Red wrap. But, most rods will require time to custom build for you. So, have some patience. Your rod will probably require 4 weeks to be built.

For 2013 we made an excellent adjustment to our MTS 4050, the model suitable for fishing 40-50# lines. In the past our heaviest line class model made use of AFTCO light rollers, a very nice guideset as is pictured on the rods above. But, ALPS recently came out with a nicer group of guides for the heavier lines this rod accommodates. The Light AFCO's are really intended for 40# and down, the new ALPS mini-rollers are a bit meatier and more rugged. No knock on the light AFTCO's, they are excellent. It's just that the new ALPS guides are a good deal tricker in our estimation, and nicer for the heavier applications for which this rod is intended. Given their clearance and size they will accommodate use of Braided lines and bulkier connecting knots more easily, as well. So, going forward we're building our 4050 model with the new ALPS guides. If you prefer your rod to be built using the AFTCO's we can certainly do that, it's your option. We are stocking the 4050 in our metallic red wrap using the new guides - so that's an option for more immediate delivery.
