Shipping runs $20 for rods, up to 7 feet in length within continental USA.

Most orders over $150 are shipped FREE!* Orders less than $150 are billed for shipping. All orders over $300 will require signature for delivery unless you specify otherwise and assume ALL LIABILITY. Rods, given their extra length, will have an added cost of $20 for rods up to 7 feet - this is a change for 2018 due to increased shipping charges from FedEx and UPS, packaging costs also increased this year for longer boxes. In 2018 UPS and FedExpress both announced new maximum size limits for boxes.  For most of 2018 shipping 8 foot rods became a major expense, easily $100 when shipped outside CA.  We've been working with FedEX to reduce these costs and finally in late 2018 we have arrived at a compromise solution. Inside CA the cost for an 8 foot rod is $35, and outside CA the cost is $50. Please note we can fit 2 rods in the same box at the same cost. We will quote you the shipping upon receipt of your order, you will not be billed until we confirm shipping costs and then will request the CVC security number for your credit card.. Upon placing your order you'll receive an immediate confirmation via email. You are not billed at that time, the confirming email may not reflect oversize or overweight charges or other issues requiring direct contact. We process orders manually, preferring to have a human actually check things over and contact you should there be questions. Within 24 hours of placing your order you will receive a follow-up email confirmation and final  invoice (pdf doc) reflecting your total charges (Monday-Friday). You are not billed until we actually send you your final invoice.  Orders shipped to CA addresses will have California Sales Taxes applied, out of state orders are tax free. During the ordering process you can select expedited shipping if required. (Within the USA we usually ship via Federal Express ground. International, and oversize/weight items will be billed for shipping and you will be sent an emailed invoice reflecting total charges prior to actual billing. We will not ship without you having had a chance to review the invoice). Hawaii and Alaska shipping will be accomplished using USPS Priority service, and our standard shipping cost policy will apply unless the item ordered does not fit in their standard size boxes. 2019 Production Now Underway

RainShadow Custom Rods
New 2019 Product Introduction!
FREE SHIPPING THIS WEEK

Our 2019 production has been completed! We've received a few each of all models with the rest of our production arriving this week from our builder.  This year's production is our best yet, subtle and stealthy in appearance with black wraps, very refined in the build, and featuring a very useful range of blanks in both spinning and conventional form. The wrap colors this time are black, blanks are black for the conventional rods and a dark gunmetal gray for the two spinning rods.  The conventional rods are 7 feet in length, the spinners are currently produced as 8 footers (so shipping carries a greater expense, but casting distance benefits). I'm giving some consideration to dropping the spinners down to 7'10" on the next production to help reduce  shipping costs. But, for this introduction they are 8 feet long.

All rods produced make use of ALPS components, braid safe guides, machined aluminum reel seats, and that stealthy black threadwork with a very fine detail in silver. All rods, with the exception of the heaviest model incorporate ALPS soft gimbal so they are comfortable to fish both with and without a fighting belt. The heaviest conventional rod makes use of a more traditional aluminum gimbal with bulb cap. The rods make use of black ALPS XBXNL & XBHXNL series SS316HXN guides for long lasting performance. The conventional rods make use of the RCJB84 series RX6/E-Glass & Graphite blanks, which we have used in the past. This is a true composite blank, more carbon towards the butt, transitioning to E-Glass thru the tip. For the spinning rods, we elected to run the RCKJB series blanks. Same construction materials, RX6/E-Glass & Graphite blanks, transitioning from Carbon to E-Glass, combining light weight, sensitivity and durability.

With the three conventional rods offered, a person could be very well rigged for your typical 3-8 day trip. Add a spinning outfit for poppers and you really have covered the bases. The only missing thing might be a trolling outfit (which most boats now supply) or perhaps a rail rod combo for the once (or more) in a lifetime catch. The three conventional setups would cover me just fine, and likely be all you really need for 6 days and down, and for 90% of what you'd need on an 8 day'r. At 10 days plus, well, you'll still fish 2 out of 3 of those rods, maybe all three, but you'll likely need the big gun, too... What are other adequate alternates for medium to long range fishing? Put the RainShadow CharkBait built rods right in the middle, between Budget Conscious and Best on the Boat.

1. Budget Conscious: $200 Okuma's PCH Series, Daiwa Proteus series  - good to very good rods, plus shipping - $30 or more

2. Good Enough:  - $220-300 CB RainShadow - very good components, far better actions than #1, equal or better build quality. I'd put Calstar and old Seeker production in the same category/class. They'll get their jobs done well, not perfection, but very capable. - shipping included

3. Best on the Boat: $300-500+ United Composites, there is a cost... from ~ $300-500, very good to excellent, plus shipping $30 or more

Side note, we've seen another "dealer" representing rods as Made in America, using RainShadow's blanks.  They don't list the blank model, trying to confuse folks.  We are very clear, these feature imported rod blanks, a very good ones.  We don't hide the manufacturer's name or model number, we don't misrepresent the origin of the product. We do bring you a very good quality build and excellent quality rod blank and components, at a very aggressive price. We first began custom building of RainShadow blanks a few years ago, given Calstar not producing and feedback from the custom rod building community boasting of the blanks performance. RainShadow has a wide range of blanks, for every application, and they created some blanks which were very similar to Calstar's product (the 7 footers offered below) both in terms of construction technique and actions. We could bypass the factory bottleneck by going towards RainShadow as custom produced rods, that's something we did with United Composites prior to Randy Penny heading up the firm. Response to our early RainShadow production by anglers was favorable, and the pricing was a bit under Calstar for a better quality build. The rods fit into our mix nicely, but cost was still a factor - too close to a true USA produced rod like United Composites.  So, for 2019 we worked with a different firm for our build, increased our quantity to be built and we achieved a sharper price. The results are as you see, stealthy cosmetics, improved build, sharper pricing, and we're INCLUDING SHIPPING!

The Recommended Line Test numbers above in boldface represent the line test we suggest running for these rods, the line test and drag level an experienced hard pulling angler would likely use them. Your application, style of fishing, strength and condition will influence your use as should the suggested drag load numbers. The drag load numbers really are key, that will determine the bend under load for which the rod was intended - and at what level the rod is working with you in fighting a fish rather than against your efforts.

Warranty: we check each blank and each finished rod to ensure they are 100%. There are no manufacturing defects in the finished rods, we say that with certainty. The rod you receive will be well made using quality materials, built properly.  We are offering these rods at a considerable savings given our large production, economies of scale come into play to provide a true value.  We are not padding the price in order to handle replacements for those who misuse their rods or who damage them by way of vicious car doors... Warranty is not liberal in application on custom rods, should you break your rod, there will be a cost for replacement. Yes, if there's delamination (which there won't be) warranty would replace the entire rod. Inspection will quickly determine such an issue, but do not count on a replacement should you, for example, decide to use the heavy rod in your boat's rod holder and then motor up a goliath grouper.  That's abuse by any measure, and we have known a few over the years who have tried to warranty replace another manufacturer's rods under just such a situation. If we were to cover such abuse we would have to factor that into the final pricing. Quite honestly, then the pricing would take abuse into account and that would result in a higher price to everyone. We're not playing that game.  You will receive a rod that is 100%, both in terms of the components, blank and build. These RainShadow blanks are strong and reliable, they will put up with a lot, anything a fish can dish out. But, like all rods, do not high-stick your rod (don't put a vertical load on any rod, keep a bend on her) and she'll last a lifetime. If you do break your rod, the warranty will cover replacement of a factory defect, but it's truly doubtful that will occur.

2017 Production
New Blanks RCJB84XH & XXH, JB 96H & XH, JB 106H & XH

RainShadow blanks have been gaining a very supportive audience in the custom rod building world. The firm that brings these blanks to market also is the worldwide distributor for ALPS rod building components, guides, reel seats, etc. They know rods, they are astute and dedicated to bringing quality to the market. They have a very strong design team at work, and their blanks show the knowledge gained through listening to the most demanding rod builders in the world. As a consequence of their listening they have a very broad range of blanks in their catalog, made for specific purposes. We've been hearing more and more from folks asking if we'd build rods from these well proven blanks. Given some shortcomings in terms of production from our traditional West Coast suppliers like Seeker and Calstar in 2014 we decided that we should learn more ourselves, pull on some blanks, do some talking to both anglers and the folks behind RainShadow. We did our homework, and thankfully we are associated with one of the better rod builders in SoCal (SaltyDog - Bill Havens) and asked him to produce several models of rods which are made for our style of fishing. We are taking our new RainShadow rod project into two distinct areas: first traditional offshore oriented rods and secondly high end inshore bass rods. 2014 marked our first production of Rainshadow rods, that was followed up with additional models in 2016 and again in 2017.

In 2016 we worked with Bill Havens (SaltyDog) to build rods for us using several Rainshadow RX6 blanks, the RCJB 84XH 40-80#, RCLB 70M and ML live bait rods all in seven foot length. We also produced an 8 foot jigstick - RCLB80M. Rainshadow introduced some new blanks for 2017, and we added several new models to our mix featuring these exciting new blanks, the RCJB84XXH, JB96H, 96XH and 106H & XH.

We made a few changes for this production. Wraps are now in silver rather than gold, a bit simpler wrap, metal ALPS reel seats on all seven foot rods with ALPS soft gimbal. The jigstick make use of a sine-cord wrapped handle.

For this year's production we've maintained the same wrap color as in 2016, silver and black. All of the rods offered make use of the RX6/E-Glass series blanks. These are composite blanks, making use of graphite on the lower end of the blanks for sensitivity and relatively light weight. The tips are blended to E-Glass for a boost in durability. The actions are fairly fast, powerful and versatile. Very similar to Calstar actions and blank design, given the transition to 'glass through the tip.

Note the use of cold shrink on the deckhand model pictured above left...

Note transition from carbon fiber to
fiberglass tip on these composite blanks.

Spinning or Conventional models available for this years production.

All 7 and 7 1/2 ft. rods come with a METAL double lock down ALPS reel seat. This is certainly not something expected on rods at the price points we're achieving on these rods.

The lighter action rods come with the ALPS Soft Gimbal. Heavier action rods feature a double lock down ALPS seat.

Nice cosmetic work on the rods, like the upper end of the handle on the jigstick, very smooth and exactly what one would expect on a custom built rod. Sine cord was used more on the last production, and for the 10 footers again this year. The majority of rods produced this year make use of the new Cold Shrink material.

USE REPORT:

Mark,

Just back from our 2 1/2 day on the ISLANDER and wanted to thank you for the excellent advice on gear to handle these brutes.  Nothing came over the rail that weighed less than 75 lbs and I went 4 for 7 including the 87 lb Jackpot.  The wife went 1, 80 pounder for 3 using her CHARKBAIT JX 2 speed with a 40 lb Ande topshot and Makira rail rod.

Before this trip we discussed some new gear and one of the rigs I picked up was the 8’ Rainshadow jigstick with an MXJ Raptor.  When I got on the boat and heard about what we were in for, I switched out the MX for a JX 2 speed with 40 # topshot.   5 of my 7 hookups came on this rig tossing ‘bicycle parts’ as you would say.  I hooked one on the rain shadow that was on for 2 1/2 hours and had me almost spooled five times.  The skipper had to fire up and chase him down twice.  Finally got him to deep color, about 20 feet out, and he sawed thru.  I never saw him but the skip estimated 140-160#.

Anyway, I wanted to take a minute to tell you how impressed I was with that Rainshadow rod.  For an 8’ jiggstick it had incredible backbone for pulling hard on these super tough bluefin.  Even the crew made comments about how perfectly balanced and powerful this rod felt.  The tip was soft enough to toss a sardine with but when you flipped that reel to ‘strike’, you didn’t have to wait for the rod to load up at all – you instantly had a load on the fish.  Perfect!  And, it threw jigs like a nine footer – It is instantly my favorite rod, and I own some nice ones.

Inshore Rods:
We've selected several of the most popular special purpose RainShadow blanks for this series of rods. All have exactly the actions desired for their particular line class and applications, from light line casting pieces to heavier action swimbait specialty rods (which have earned high marks from the buys focusing on landing BIG calico bass and bringing 'em in through heavy cover). Superior construction materials, excellent build quality from Bill Havens (Salty Dawg), top notch components from ALPS...these are rods which will provide excellent service for years if not decades.

Stick Jacket

Fishing Rod Covers

The Stick Jackets are a little different than the typical fabric rod covers, or any other cover that we've come across. They are made from a tough polyethylene filament that's virtually impervious to salt as well as resistant to mold and mildew. The braided material behaves much like the old "Chinese finger trap" gripping your fishing rod for snug protection against unwanted damage to line guides and rod tips.

  • prevents tangled rods

  • easy push on/push off installation

  • protects rod guides & tips from damage

  • great for boat rod lockers and rod tubes

  • breathable & will not retain water

  • impervious to mold or mildew

  • lightweight

  • you can hang rods for storage using the tough gromet at the cover's top

  • abrasion resistant and UV resistant

While the manufacturer makes a few sizes, most are only suitable for freshwater bass rods. These very useful rod covers take good care of your rod, and I'll often make use of them to both protect my rods during transport, storage and while on the boat when some rods may be unused.  Once I get home, I'll spray both the rod with cover, and then remove the cover to dry and further clean up my rods.  They do a great job protecting the rods and they do not absorb moisture. Many of the products made by this manufacturer are too small for the majority of saltwater rods, however we stock four sizes that are quite suitable for our uses. These extend down to the foregrip or right above the reel seat. They do NOT cover the entire rod. Made this way they can be used with the reel on the rod.

Big Game 6 - skinny sleeve like the red one's pictured right. Fits rods up to 8 1/2 feet long and 6 inch circumference

Big Game 7 - skinny sleeve like the red one's pictured right. Fits rods up to 9  1/2 feet long and 6 inch circumference

Spinning - This is perhaps the most useful size for the majority of saltwater oriented rods with larger guides as may be used for say 50# and up. If the guides are tall, get this version or the Magnum. If you are running spinning guides, then this is what's required. Fits rods up to 7 1/2" tall and a bit over 7" circumference. Best choice for trolling rods.

Magnum - For rods up to 8 1/2 feet long with a 7 5/8 circumference. Best for larger rods, larger guides.

Do understand these are not rod sleeves made to cover the entire rod, they are made to provide protection primarily for the guides and rod finish, made to end prior to the reel seat.
