Toro Tamer Tools from
CharkBait
As is our nature, we seek to produce
our own gear and bring better values to our clients. Here's another case
in point. There are a few sources for tools that fit the needs of
fishermen, we are working with what I consider to be the best and most
innovative. They are the same source Okuma and PLine used for their
tools. Like our other CharkBait products, we're not trying to build in
dealer or
distributor profit margins - we're the direct source and skip several stages of
middlemen in the supply chain. This means we can improve the quality
offered and the price folks need to pay for our products. We're very
proud to introduce Toro Tamer CharkBait tools.
 Our CharkJaw
Plier is available in red and gunmetal anodized finish. Please
compare these to P-Line's excellent pliers... listed below
|
Our CharkJaw Pliers are available in three
styles. We have a standard Multi-Function Cut and Grip model
which is made from aircraft quality machined aluminum. They are made
on a CNC machine for precise tolerances. The cutting jaws can deal
with braided line or mono just fine. They are made from a high
quality Tungston Carbide for long life. The Jaws are
replaceable, and we stock the parts. For the jaws on all our pliers
we use quality STAINLESS STEEL, instead of the carbon steel
which is what's used by PLine and Okuma for their products. The jaws
are replaceable. The tools are anodized for the perfect balance of
hardness, durability and appearance. All tools are spring loaded.
Unique to our Multi-Function pliers, we also have added a non-slip
rubber handle material to provide a comfortable and secure grip. All pliers come with a sheath and
lanyard. Compare this to other products costing $49 and then look
more closely to our upgraded features such as the grips, and the
stainless steel jaws. |
|
Our Multi-Function Crimp, Cut, Grip and Split Ring
Tool (Multi-Plier) is a personal favorite of mine. This tool should be
considered an essential by any angler. It does so many things, and does
them very well. It's of the same design as our standard upgraded pliers,
but use a very innovative set of jaws that cover crimping, swaging,
split rings and provides good grip for extracting hooks or other needs.
Again, these jaws are made from Stainless Steel and the cutters are made
from Tungston Carbide, and you've got the same nice non-slip grips. This
product compares to other pliers costing $49 or more - but I doubt
you'll find the same match of function and materials from any source.
|

The Multi-Plier is available in both
gunmetal and red anodized finish. Please compare these to P-Line's
excellent pliers listed below... |
The Power Plier is available in a striking
silver and red anodized finish. Please compare these to Okuma's
excellent pliers listed below...
|
To round out our selection of pliers we
have an upgrade Power Plier. This piece is a bit more meaty, 8" in
length verses 7 to 7 1/2" and it's a bit more robust in design. The
cutting jaws are in-line for added power on this model. The
competing value of this product is darn close to $100 from other
sources. |
| We also produce a very handy tool for
dealing with Spectra and other Super Braided lines. Our Toro Tamer
CharkChopper Cutter is made from Stainless Steel, mirror polished
with a treated cutting edge for durability. It's also spring loaded
for easy one handed operation. The jaws are robust, and there is a
safety latch. Also, a soft grip handle is provided for secure use
and comfort. These are a quality product you'd expect to pay $15-18
or so. We're doing a bit better than than that and ours are nicer. |

Please compare these to Braid's offering
further down this page. |

New Fish-N-Grip
Scales!
Our
new Fish-N-Grip is the nicest of it's type on the market in our humble
opinion. The Grip is available in red and blue, and offers some
significant advantages verses others which have been on the market prior
to this point. First off, the grip is kinder to the fish. After all, one
reason for owning something like this is to practice catch and release.
That release doesn't do you much good if you've mangled up the fish's
mouth or torn up the lips! (That would be one disadvantage of the Rapala
product). Our Grip-N-Scales are also nicer in quality than any that have
been on the market for under $100, the materials are better and they
function better (that's a direct comparison to the Evolution products
which are inferior in every respect). Our handle material is made from an
excellent tacky rubber, so you have superior security when the piece is in
your hands. The Fish-N_Grips also have a zero adjustment so you can be
sure the scale feature is accurate over time given it's a spring device
(which we prefer for saltwater use verses an electronic digital scale).
Given that we are bringing these to you directly, the value is very much
stronger than any other such device.
One note, these products
have a range of measurement going up to 44 lb. They are not suitable for
weighing fish under 5 lb in my estimation. If you are most concerned about
weight of the smaller catches, then I'd recommend our 25 lb. Drag Scale
which is listed below this model.

Toro
Tamer Drag Scales
While we
refer to 'em as Drag Scales, others simply
know 'em as a scale. Like other spring scales
of this type, we make use of a tell-tale so
you know how high the weight was when there's
no more pressure on the scale - the marker
stays at the maximum setting. What we do
differently on both our 25 lb and 50 lb scale
is to provide both weight measurements AND
drag measurements for appropriate line tests.
This is the key. I'd like to say it was all my
idea, but its something we learned here
through the efforts of another companies
product. However, they went out of business
and with that so too did a very useful
feature. We brought that feature back - and
it's what sets this spring scale apart from
others. It takes the guesswork out of the
equation for a fellow trying to set their drag
properly, and quickly. And, like our
Fish-N-Grip product above, you can "zero" the
scale accurately so it's going to last even
when the spring changes over time.
The
scales are made from aluminum with stainless
steel. You can use the product for weighing
your catch or setting your drag. However, we
made the scales with drag setting in mind.
It's a good quality product, but like anything
that may be used in saltwater, a bit of
preventative maintenance will ensure it's long
term performance.
 |
 |
| It's easy to set your drag
with this scale. There are markings on
both sides of the scale. On the right is
the weight, on the left you'll see two
measures one in red, the other blue. Red
is for 25% blue for 33% and the numbers
indicate the line test being fished. So,
for 30# line you'll see two optimum drag
measurements indicating the appropriate
level for your line test depending upon
your preferences. Again, it is recommended
that you set your drag properly to get the
most performance from your reel. Lever
drag reels are wonderful to own, but you
are blowing it if you don't set your drag
properly to maximize your reels
performance. This scale helps you
accomplish that better than any other on
the market, and the value is better since
it's direct from us to you - without
middleman in the supply chain. |

a fishing necessity
-
Subjectively Ranked
Good
You
can tell the folks at Izorline spend a lot of time on the water, their
products are must-have's, things fisherman need. They address the needs
of fishermen with unique products, quality made products, that do just
what they are supposed to do.
Sportsmans Tool Set I - (6" long nose plier, Dr. fisherman stainless
serrated scissors/forceps black web double sheath) @ $16.30
Sportsman's Tool Set II - (6" long diagonal plier-dikes, Dr.
fisherman stainless serrated scissors/forceps, black web double
sheath) @ $16.30
The
Deckhand series of products came about to fulfill the needs of
professional fishermen. The handles are slip-proof, the dikes cut wire
and cable well, and they flat out last. The standard Deckhand is a
dandy, functional value. The stainless steel Deckhand offers additional
corrosion protection. It's a premium item, not cheap, but it's a
terrific long term value.
Deckhand - (6" long nose pliers, 6" long diagonal pliers-dikes, black
double sheath) @ $15.50
Stainless Deckhand - (6" long nose pliers, 6" long diagonal
pliers-dikes, leather sheath) @ $30.20
Besides bringing Spectra to
the long range scene almost a decade ago, Izorline offers many other
products fishermen consider essentials. Their rigging kits are
a well thought out and worthwhile investment for any angler getting
started rigging their own lures, or for an old salt wanting a boat
kit that covers all the bases. The Izor kits include a bunch
of aluminum crimps, springs, even a crimper if needed.
Need a sheath for your tools? Izor's got 'em. These
sheaths are made from a tough Cordura fabric, and are available in single
and double configurations. They feature a metal belt clip, which can also
grip onto your pants/shorts/whatever. The sheaths are black with the
Izorline tuna (Catch what you've been missing) logo.

Edge
World
Great Price / Good Quality - Economy Tools
The
folks from Edge World make some nifty tools for fishermen.
Their Ti Matte finish will look really
similar to another firms "titanium coated" tools which were discontinued last year
(hmmm, their initials are Shimano). Those tools cost $14-16.
Going to a different source, with a different handle material,
saves you some big time bucks. These are not some cheap import
piece of excremental dung. They're darn good tools, made
from high grade carbon steel with non-slip handles. They're
an import but are of good quality and great value tools. Double their price, you
still won't find a better product on the market. They hold up to
corrosion quite well.

BETTER
- COSMETIC UPGRADE, SPRING
LOADED FOR EASIER ONE-HANDED USE, BETTER CUTTER
P-Line Adaro
Pliers

The
folks at P-Line are getting into the premium plier market, too!
Their tools have always been of very good quality. These pliers
are made in China like the others in this -Better- section.
Looks to me like they come from the same factory. The P-Line
Adaro Pliers carry a retail of $79, but we have them offered
here for $39.99! The pliers come with a cordura sheath a nylon
lanyard. They're available in three colors, use separate
tungsten carbide cutters and coated carbon steel jaws for
strength and durability.

EVEN BETTER
Okuma Tools
Saw
these first at ICAST back in July, now
finally being supplied to us. Okuma has three new fishermen's tools on
the market. Three new premium pliers, each a bit different. All are made
from solid machined aluminum. All are anodized the same as the reel
model they correspond to by the same name. All feature tungsten steel
cutters, for both mono and braided lines. All are spring use a spring
loaded mechanism allowing the jaws to open when not under pressure (easy
one hand operation). All come with a sheath and lanyard. That's the
common part of the product range. But, they do differ. The most
traditional is the Cavalla Plier, in black.
These
utilize a long nose design for easy hook removal and other typical
tasks. The Cedros (blue/black) offers a high-end split ring plier, for
complimenting vertical jigging jobs. (name corresponds to a new line of
machined lever drag and star drag reel). A good split ring plier is a
nice thing to have if you do a lot of jigging for deeper water fish, and
these just might be the best ones ever built that were dedicated to that
style of fishing. Their handles are ported to reduce weight. These are the
nicest working split ring pliers I've used, wonderful in that regard. The
jaws will fill quite a few rolls. The Makaira matches up to a new line
of tournament quality reels that are not here yet, but will represent a
significant leap for Okuma in terms of performance. This plier has more
of a bull-nose design, wider with more grip surface. They're ported for
weight reduction. This is the pair that would probably prove most useful
on a boat or while working (home or job)! All three cut Spectra
beautifully.

INDULGENT
ACCURATE
The
creative folks at Accurate also have some very nice pliers, that
only a few will have the opportunity to own. They are not produced in high volume, they are a bit esoteric. But, my gosh
are they nice! The APL-7's and 8's are very light in weight, with a cutter
that will slice through just about anything, cleanly. The cutter
can also be replaced when needed, easily. Despite their very light
weight, the Piranha Pliers are super strong, made from 6061-T6 Aluminum,
440C heat treated stainless steel replaceable jaws and cutters which can
cut through braided line and wire cable! In 2013 Accurate introduced an
update of their pliers, trimmed some extra metal off 'em to
bring the weight down a bit more and got very aggressive on
the price. The previous generation pliers ran $155-140, now
the Piranha Pliers are only $89 and $99 for the 7 and 8 inch
sizes.

Braid Super Crimper!
Here's
a long awaited new product from Braid Products. Their new HD Power
Crimper is pre-calibrated for accuracy. No longer will you be unsure
of just how much pressure is required to complete your crimp. With
the Power Crimper it knows how tight to go! All you do is place the
sleeve in the matching groove, then compress until the ratchet disengages.
If you make an error and select the wrong size groove, the jaws will not
close. It will handle crimps from #1 to 2.5! Great for covering
almost all your crimping needs from light lines all the way up to 300#

Here's
a useful pair of products from the folks at Braid Products. We've been waiting for these crimpers
and split ring pliers to become available for months. Despite
their small size these crimpers (swagers) are very powerful and capable
of handling 200# line size crimps! They feature 4 positions, twin
cutter for mono and wire, a soft comfortable ergonomic handle with
stainless steel and strength in their construction. The Split Ring
Opener has two positions, a cutter for mono line, soft comfortable
handle and liberal use of stainless steel where you need it. Both are
about 7 inches in length and compact enough to fit in your tackle box.
Since these products were first produced, there quality
has declined somewhat - my opinion since I owned the original crimper
and we used the split ring piece here at the shop. Make no mistake, they
still do what they are supposed to do, and they are a good product, just
not quite as nice as before and the price went up about $5 from what we
were able to offer back a few years ago.
Braid's Newest
Tools
For 2008 Dennis Braid really
is hitting his stride with three new tools and many new lures. In
April we received three new cutters, all of which do what they
should do...and a bit more!
The Pro Series Heavy Duty
Cutter can handle wire of up to 200#'s! It features superior Spectra cutting and
even has a safety latch. The largest and best new device from
Braid is their Multi-Plier. This one pretty much does all
the frustrating tasks we have need of, and does it in one tool.
The Multi-Plier can open up light and heavy rings, cut braid and
mono, cut wire, tie hooks, release line...and also has a safety
lock. It even comes with a nylon sheath! It has a soft grip handle
and like the other tools is corrosion resistant.

IZORLINE
Besides bringing Spectra to
the long range scene almost a decade ago, Izorline offers many other
products fishermen consider essentials. Their rigging kits are
a well thought out and worthwhile investment for any angler getting
started rigging their own lures, or for an old salt wanting a boat
kit that covers all the bases. The Izor kits include a bunch
of aluminum crimps, springs, even a crimper if needed.

P-Line Crimpers
and Tools
Besides making excellent lures, line and leader,
PLine also offers some very useful tools fishermen will put to use.
-----Don't use pliers to make your crimps!

AFW (American
Fishing Wire) produces a wide range of tools to
compliment their rigging products. Their Swagers/Crimpers
are good quality and very well priced.
Two Tools You Need
Doing
some maintenance, simply need to spin on your bolts for the reel clamp
or swap out a handle.
Here are a couple hard to find must-haves you should keep in your bag or on your
bench. The two tools pictured are some of the most useful things you can
have available. Add a shorty screwdriver and you're pretty much done
when it comes to working on Penns, Avets, Newells... Super versatile.
The four way wrench covers the most used nuts/bolts used in fishing reel
manufacture. The 8 in one Reel Handle Wrench will make life easier on
you when time comes to open up a reel and take off the handle. These two
products are offered together at a dandy deal, or individually. Both
tools pretty well cover your needs for taking down Penn, Daiwa, Newell,
Abu and some nameless bike makers reels.
