Some folks don't go in much for trolling, but as a dedicated private boater I sure do enjoy the troll.  It's a prospecting thing.  Probably a carry-over from my childhood, heading out to the desert with my dad looking for arrowheads and other artifacts.  It's the search, the surprise of finding what you're looking for (much like me looking for my cell phone in the morning), rigging things the right way, having the right patterns in the spread, and then HOOK-UP!  Finding 'em is almost as much fun as catching 'em, at times even more fun.  We're very happy to introduce you to Tormenter.  They make some dandy lures, both for trolling and for sight casting or drop-back use. Tormenter lures are made offshore, but are an American owned firm.  Please check the full listing of lures on this page, they've got some great stuff you  don't want to miss.

Tuna, Dorado, Yellowtail and Wahoo

Tuna Plug

Here's an exciting new product from Tormenter, and a familiar design to long-time CharkBaiters. We used to sell a hard bodied trolling plug designed similarly to a Cedar Plug made by WildLife Lures. Since their owner sold the company they've pretty much disappeared from the scene leaving us and other fishermen wondering where they could buy a similar plug. We found 'em!

The Tormenter Tuna Plug goes beyond the much appreciated Wildlife lure, they run a brass insert through the body of the lure, it's also less brittle so they are harder to crack and damage from taking a ding on a deck. Like the Wildlife, they will get bit given their design and fish appealing look. Another difference is that these new plugs are weighted in a manner which gives them a bit more balance. The lures are quality rigged with an appropriate cedar plug-style 10/0 size needle-eye hook. We were excited to find this product, and even more delighted when we found that they represented a much better value, at about 40% off the price of the older lures! Try 'em, you'll like 'em!

Tormenter Dart

Tormenter makes some nice stuff, catches fish, and is relatively inexpensive. Their little darts are a great case in point. The weigh about half an ounce, four inch length, feature a nice skirt with reflective mylar underskirt.

For those times when the tuna appear to be eating smaller lures, these little darts are a great way to entice a bite. Albacore often tend to target the smaller baits, and that's when these lures are most productive. Yellowfin will also gobble 'em, as will other gamefish from stripers, bonito, yellowtail, dorado...

Bone Head

Here's another nifty lure and another value as well. The small Bone Head uses a concave head with large beady eyes. It's a chugger, so there's a good bubble trail for the targeted fish to follow. They are six inches in length and 3/4 of an inch in diameter. We're stocking them in five patterns (three shown right: purple/black, pink/white & red/black. The lure should run $6.99 or so unrigged, but like all Tormenters, they're a solid value. We offer these lures rigged and unrigged. Some folks like using them in tandem for even more action, an effective enticement for dorado and tuna from a panga or private boat.

Cone Head

Here's another very effective lure and another terrific value from Tormenter. The Cone Heads are 9 inches in length and are weighted (3 ounces). These are fast trolling lures - up to 16 knots - effective for a wide range of gamefish with yellowfin they're VERY popular and effective.  This style of lure has been a long time favorite on the East Coast, and is gaining much recognition locally and on the long range scene. The leaded cone head stays in the water, even when trolled quickly on choppy days. The lure features TIED on double PVC skirts for long term use in harsh conditions. The rigged lures feature a stainless steel hook and 200# mono.

This lure will do a great job enticing tuna and yellowtail on the troll on our local waters. Don't be too surprised if a marlin comes up, either. This head design has long been used for billfish as well as other more tasty pelagics. It's a proven lure, for marline, sailfish, dorado, wahoo, tuna, yellowtail and kingfish. It's also one heck of a value...

Attractors

Bowling Pins

To help attract attention, whatever the species targeted, teasers are a great idea for attracting attention to your offerings. Folks working marlin well know their value, but I've also become a believer for tuna and shark fishing. They do raise fish. The Bowling Pins from Tormenter are the nicest on the market, better finished than anything I've seen. They are thru-wired, which seems like a no-brainer kind of idea but I know of at least one other major manufacturer whose birds have never been so well rigged.

NEW Tormenter Teaser Birds
New & Effective!

Here's a great new product from Tormenter Fishing Products. Some of you might be familiar with their "bowling pin" teasers. They're the top design in that category of fish attractions. Their new Bird is something that will excite a lot of private boaters, and raise more than a few fish, too! The Tormenter Bird has a weighted belly, so it won't flip over even in rough/foul conditions. Their aluminum wings won't snap off under stress, nor will fish bite through the lure easily. They're through wired, with a connection loop on both ends for easy rigging. They have a great airbrush paint job, with several layers of clear coat to provide extra protection and durability. They look great, track great, and will raise fish!

12" long, 6" wide at the wings, 9 ounces

Here's a great product for private boaters. Guys in the know have been using 'em for years - spreader bars. Ours are made by an East Coast  skipper, Joe Ferrulle, with the highest quality materials available. They've been helping guys get tuna and other gamefish turned-on for years, and we're seeing increasing use by in-the-know skippers from Cabo, Panama, Australia... You're missing a solid bet if you don't have one on your boat, and given the cost of fuel it's nuts not to use 'em to maximize your opportunities. Here's his run-down on the product:

Specs

These bars are constructed using only the highest quality components.  The bars are 36 inch stainless steels bars that will withstand the elements.  We use both Jinkai and High Seas mono and crimp sleeves.  We also use super chafing gear on all main line connections.  The teasers are made using 130lb. mono and the main line has 300lb mono to ensure you will not loose the big one.  There are 14 Ocean Lure Concept shell squids in each bar.  The stinger bait is made using a 9/0 2x strong big game tuna hook which is custom made for Tuna Tales.  Your stingers are exchangeable and replicable by simply detaching them from the 350lb barrel swivel that is hidden inside the last teaser in the main line.

Best Uses

Spreader bars can be used to catch a variety of game fish including all kinds of tunas, marlin, wahoo, yellow tail, and sailfish.  These bars are designed to be trolled between 4 and 9 knots.  The bars should be just sliding on the surface when desired speed is reached.  They are light enough to be run from outriggers as well and off your flat line.  If your bar is dipping under water, that means you either have it too far back or you are going too slow. Tuna Tales bars can also be used as a teaser by just taking off the stinger bait.

These bars mimic a school of bait to your target species.  Do not be worried that there is only one hook on the entire bar.  The fish will always attack the stinger bait because it is the weak bait in the school.

The spreader bar is commonly used by private boaters on the East Coast, they've had to innovate and depend more on technique rather than easy access to live bait. But, increasingly I'm seeing more West Coast anglers following this trend, and having better luck getting fish to turn-on and get aggressive. If you're not making use of a spreader and you spend time chasing tuna, you owe it to yourself to drag one right down the middle, then add to your spread on the outside corners for a more effective presentation. The rigs come in nice cases made by Nantucket Bound, for safe storage. They're available in two sizes, seven and nine inches, with 14 squids in the rig. The trailing squid is of a different color than the rest, to draw more attention. The straggler get's bit, odd man out!

Inshore and Offshore Jigs

Tormenter Minnow, Anchovy and Chrome Caster

Here are three very nifty lures for both inshore and offshore use. The small Tormenter Minnow is a dandy lure for tossing off the shore, off piers, or even off the slide for albacore when they're munching the small stuff. The little Minnows weigh .7 ounces, are about 1.2 inches in length and are available in three enticing patters.

The Tormenter Anchovy is a 2 ounce chunk of iron with a wonderful fish attracting finish. They're small, about 2 inches in length. They'll cast a long, long distance, but I think their best application will be found tossing them off the stern on the slide for tuna. Keep one on one of your bait rigs when you're trolling. When you get picked up on the troll drop the jig off the back of the boat. They'll drop quickly given their shape, size and weight. Let the lure drop back to the approximate distance of the jig-strike and put the reel in gear. Chances are VERY good you'll be picked up by a deeper swimming, larger tuna than the one that jumped on the trolling feather.

Look over the colors of these lures to aid matching the expected forage for your targeted species. The Chovie, Sardine and Mackerel patterns are local favorites, but the old standby red/head is something well worth trying. It also has a bit of a luminescent belly to aid in vertical jigging. The greenback orange belly Bleeder is another very nice looking bait pattern that will be quite effective down south for sure.

The Chrome Caster is a familiar design to most anglers. They are effective fished off the shore, tossed from a boat or even vertically jigged. They feature a feathered hook rig, chrome prism reflective decal on one side and highly polished metal construction. They work well for almost all inshore fish and many offshore predators will jump on 'em as well. We're stocking four sizes. They're something well worth bringing along when you travel to Baja to fish off the shore. The smaller size will also prove effective locally.
