Please
note, you will see many spooling options for the reels listed below.
It's not our intent to confuse folks, but you do have options here
unlike some places and we take pride in the fact we can rig things
according to your needs, applications and preferences.
We have been pioneers in
Super Braid / Spectra rigging and we offer a few methods of rigging the
lines together beyond most retailers capability, including the standard
long range Bimini to Albright knots, Served and Sato connections. We do
not use simple uni-to-uni knots for connecting braid to leader, we take
the time to make a better knot, one that will hold up over time and deal
with larger fish. Simpler knots don't work as well. You can see videos
of what we do on our YouTube channel - CharkBaitUSA. We can upgrade that
connection to one of several options, the benefit with those connections
is that the diameter is thinner and that allows the line to flow through
your rod's guides more smoothly, has less resistance in the water and is
stealthier. If you have questions regarding rigging, please give us a
call or zap back an email and we can go over things with you.

For those
who counted Penn out, be prepared to eat
some crow. Penn's back, big time!
Where
Penn's lineup was lacking was the
popular mid priced reels, from $150 to
$220, they are back in the game in a big
way with the Squall and Fathom series
reels. The Squall series began re-writing
the books in this regard with two
excellent smaller size reels to build
upon the strength of the old 525 Mag.
Now Penn's expanded upon that with some
larger size Star Drag reels, and they
listened to us and produced the 25N size
(like they recently began offering in
their Fathom Series and Torques). I
don't think there are any
better star
drag reels for under $200 built, with
the star drag running $149! The
smallest size Squall Star drags offer a
very useful magnetic cast control
system, the larger reels do not offer
that feature. But, all reels in that
series have excellent freespool
performance - even their lever drags
spin well!
And, they make use of aluminum spools,
marine grade bronze and stainless steel
gear components, and their live spindle
- free floating spool design for
casting performance. And the reels benefit
from HT100 drag elements and Penn's
useful Versa-Drag for the utmost of user
fine tuning for their own particular
requirements. The anti-reverse is also
robust and redundant with both a one way
anti-reverse bearing AND silent back up
ratchet (dog).
Penn went even
further, they also build the Squall
series in a lever drag form, and they've
kept the price within reach of the most
budget conscious fishermen at
$159-179. They've not neglected the
lefty angler, by providing their 40 and
60 LD's in left hand form. It really is
nice to see what Penn's been working on
the past couple years, they now are
making the reels that anglers have been
asking for, and West Coast anglers in
particular got
their wish with the 25N size which is
now becoming part of Penn's production
in the casting oriented Squall, Fathom and Torque Series
reels.

Note the 3 position clicker on
the 30 size above
Penn's
Squall Lever Drag reels were first introduced at 2010's
ICAST Show. Penn really showed off a lot of wonderful new
gear at that show, with new rods and reels that
represented their best effort in over a decade. The Squall LD's are available in four sizes, with two sizes offering
lefty retrieve. They are priced aggressively, offering
excellent features and construction at a very aggressive
price. The reels have some common features, such as the
versa-handle system allowing two different handle
positions allowing for both speed or power depending upon
your needs - and it's easy to change! The reels are made
from a composite graphite material, zero issues with
corrosion, good strength, light weight. All reels feature
5+1 bearings and they are made for handling braided lines
well, with spools that will help prevent rotation on the
spool. The reels design was well thought out, with the
lever designed NOT to protrude above the frame of the
reel. That means there's less chance of the line to loop
over the lever and hang up, causing a lost fish or
backlash. You also get a 3 position clicker, a very nice
feature allowing different tensions
on the clicker - helpful for use on
a kite, larger or smaller size
baits... The reels use the same line capacity rings for
easy recognition of spooling level as several of Penn's
newest offerings, and on the two larger reels you get the
benefit of "Switch Blade Lugs." This is another innovative
feature, with a simple pull the lugs pop up for use, and
when you don't need 'em (and don't want the possible
hang-up of line) you can depress them back into the frame
- without use of any tools! Nice thinking Penn - the
thoughtful engineering is readily
apparent!
Lightweight graphite frames and sideplates

The quality of the Squall
leverdrags goes well beyond ANY graphite bodied reels
that have ever been built. The gear material is better,
larger and stronger. The drag system is better, and they
use greased washers and a sealed system so they're well
protected against internal corrosion. For long term
performance, no doubt the "bike maker's" old TLD's have
been left in the dust. And, the soft grip football style
handle is very nice to hang onto while battling a tough
fish. All in all, whether you are looking at the star or
lever drag versions, Penn's new Squalls set the standard
by which other manufacturers reels should be judged -
and Penn wins hands down.

Penn's
Fathom Star Drag reels are a new series of full metal bodied reels
that are made for years of hard use, and made to fish very
well by all measures. The reels have GREAT freespool
performance, excellent drags, and they're built Penn
tough. When the levelwind Fathom reels first arrived last
year, all they guys here were beating up the Penn rep
asking why the heck Penn didn't come out with a
non-levelwind version of the reels. They were some of the
nicest levelwinds ever made, offered some things Daiwa
could not achieve with their Saltist series. We really
felt that a non-levelwind Fathom would give the Saltist
and the Avet's some competition. Well, I guess Penn was
listening because they introduced this new reel at ICAST
and the response told them that they indeed were on the
right track. The new Penn Fathom series star drag reels
are excellent fishing instruments!

From the little 12 to the large 40
size fathom, all represent solid reels. The favorite of the
guys here tends to run towards the narrow 25N, a bit taller
than the 12/15 size and narrower than the 30. Very nice size
for casting, with 50# Spectra suggested for backing, then
you've got room for close to 100 yards of 30# on top.
Wonderful for most casting work, and the reel will find it's
home on plenty of jig-sticks rigged up just that way. Penn has a winner on their hands.

Here's
another excellent new series of reels from the folks at Penn, the
Fathom. As I mentioned earlier, I'd sure like to see this reel
offered without a levelwind. Basically, it's a Penn version of
Daiwa's Saltist series reel. The exception is that this series of
reels is only available in the levelwind form. Well, in my opinion,
that's not too bad. For the past few years Daiwa has offered the
nicest levelwind on the market for general saltwater use, now they
have some very serious competition.
Penn's new Fathom is a full metal bodied reel, with metal sideplates
too. Like the Squall, it uses a marine grade bronze alloy main
gear with a precision machined stainless steel pinion gear.
You've got the benefit of Penn's patented Versa Drag system with
HT-100 washers. The Versa Drag allows you greater control over the
level of drag you need for your particular fishing application.
You've got three shielded stainless steel ball bearings, an instant
anti-reverse bearing with silent back-up ratchet. The levelwind
system is made from stainless steel with a titanium coated leveler.
On the larger 40 & 60 size you even have reversible harness lugs, a
nice feature for both safety while trolling and to help out if you
intend to fish this reel at it's upper drag limit of 30#'s! The reel
is made to take full advantage of fishing Spectra (or any other form
of braided line). Another feature, like the same generation Squall,
is the line markings on the spool. These eliminate the guesswork
about how much line you have left on your reel, with accurate
markings for 1/3rd, 2/3rds or full spool of line. If you respool
often, you have a benchmark for backing with Spectra or your
topshot, helping you eliminate wasted time and line. You'll also
know when it's time to button down the drag on a larger fish... The
new Fathom sells for $199 to $219.
Penn
saw the need for smaller baitcasting size reels long ago,
and offered the 900 Series Internationals for those clients.
But, there was also a need for a high quality low profile
baitcaster for the guys fishing the bays, some freshwater
and brackish water exploits on light line. The new Sargus
and Pursuit reels cover these bases quite nicely, and they
do so at reasonable prices.
Penn's really going after the
inshore fishing market aggressively. Their 3 piece travel
rods can be a great addition to these new reels and are well
worth checking out, too. I bought one a couple year back and
consider it one of the brighter things I've done in terms of
fishing-fun-per-dollar. Here's a link to the
travel rods.
Sargus The
little Sargus offers a perfect match of smooth function and
rugged durability. It's features a machined aluminum frame
and right side plate, stainless steel clutch, externally
adjustable magnetic and internally adjustable centrifugal
brake system, carbon fiber drag washers and 11.5#'s of
maximum drag! You'll crank in 27 inches of line per handle
rotation given it's quick 6.4:1 retrieve rate. The Sargus &
Pursuit will also hold a good 200 yards or 12# line.
Pursuit
Penn's Pursuit offers similar features and construction,
basically the same piece with a couple distinctions. First
off, instead of running seven stainless steel bearings it
uses six and there's no magnetic braking, only the internal
centrifugal brake is offered for cast control. But, for most
of us, that's just fine. Both the Sargus and Pursuit are
easy to take-down, easy to maintain, and well built.
GLD
20II, 30II and 50II Graphite Two Speed Lever Drag Reels
The
only reels to
combine Penn’s legendary two speed lever drag performance with the light
weight, strength and corrosion resistance of a one piece graphite frame.
Perfect for fighting bluewater gamefish of all sizes, from light tackle
marlin to sails, wahoo, tuna, dolphin, California yellowtail and more.
Also great for tough bottom-dwelling species like grouper and amberjack.
• New push-button shifting system makes it easier than ever to change
gears, even in the heat of battle.
• Machined anodized aluminum spool, four sealed stainless steel ball
bearings and machined stainless steel gears for smooth performance over
the long run.
• Graphite rod clamp for easy, secure attachment.
• Penn’s renowned International® style lever drag system with pre-set
feature and HT100® drag material.
So,
what's our opinion of the new reel? I think they're great for
1-3 day trips, will fill your rail time chores on longer trips quite
well. It's a good product for the private boater who needs a two
speed, doesn't want to bite the bullet for a International, but
definitely wants more than a 6/0. They are no 30VSW, but they'll
catch a lot of the same fish. As was recently proven on a long
ranger out of San Diego with a yellowfin tuna close enough to 300# to
count. The GLD's replace Penn's KG series of reels, offering some
improvements over their initial introduction. Their freespool is
better, for instance, drag has also been enhanced. They
represent a very solid value in an increasingly competitive arena of
light weight two-speed leverdrag reels. I've yet to hear a complaint
from an owner of one of these reels. Client feedback has been
very favorable. That counts for something.
Penn also makes a
non-two-speed version of the GLD's in both the
20 and 30 size. The capacities of the reels are
exactly the same. Four stainless steel ball
bearings, precision machined gears, machined
anodized aluminum spool, and a graphite one
piece frame. These leverdrags are a fine value
and excellent addition to any angler's trolling
or heavy rail arsenal.

Graphite GS series Reels
The GS products are a flat out home
run for Penn. They combine some great features, that really help an
angler get the upper hand. The reels feature high retrieve speed, a
comfortable sleek design, star drag, lightweight one-piece
graphite composite frame, high strength graphite composite rod clamp
system and oversized HT100 drag system. The GS series feature bearings
not bushings for improved casting. These reels are quite nice, and
excellent values. They represent a very good value in terms of
performance for the dollar. The features are strong, and the
fishability is superb.
Price includes shipping charges within continental USA.
Penn
Senator IIThe 4/0 and 6/0 Senators are standard issue
trolling reels that can also perform in a casting role. Like the
Jigmasters, you can do a lot of updating with these products, but you
have to start somewhere. The basic product is a great value, and it can
grow with your needs too. I only work with the HL style product,
these
are the ones you want, not the scale down models - especially if you've
a mind for upgrading over time. Both the 4/0 and 6/0 reels excel in the
trolling role, both reels are supplied with rod clamps, star drag with
HT100 material. They are an essential piece in your tackle assortment.
In 2009 Penn began
producing all the Senator models overseas. This was the only way Penn
could maintain the pricing levels on these reels. Since production is
done at their factory, they have control of the manufacture, and quality
has not dropped off. All Senators listed have 2
bearings, lightweight graphite frame, machined and anodized aluminum
spool, precession machined stainless steel pinion gear, marine grade
bronze alloy main gear, with stainless steel frame rings and HT100
drags.
Penn
500L @ $54.95 Here's a standard. The Penn 500 is
probably one of the best values in the market. The 500 series feature a
quick take down design, allowing you to exchange spools of line quickly
and efficiently. Okay, so what's the downside...there are two
compromises from these reels. First, using light line 12-15 lb. may pose
a problem with line getting stuck between the spool and sideplate, it's
a nasty habit. Secondly, you get bushings not bearings. That's why
Accurate has built a booming business. You really do get what you pay
for, but you can upgrade!
The Jigmaster is a
dandy product, but when you step up to the GS series you really do gain
a lot (4 bearings, faster retrieve, tighter tolerance for light line use
and durability...). You should expect to get something for your money
when you spend more for a reel, and that's the case. But, the Jigmasters
allow you to upgrade as your needs progress. That makes this a great
starter reel, or basic equipment for a fishing dabbler.
Features:
HT100 drags, right side take-down, black anodized aluminum spool,
counter balanced handle with non-slip soft grip knobs, star drags,
clicker...(Jigmaster 500 @ 275/30lb, 4:1 ratio, 22 oz.; 501 @ 500/12 [20

GT Level Wind Fished by anglers and
charter boat captains worldwide, Penn GT Level Wind reels are
perhaps the most versatile series of reels on the planet. From
inshore bottom-fishing to offshore waters; from deep water
wrecks to trolling Salmon off the Columbia River, GT Levelwind
reels have seen and done it all. In a verbal testament to the
performance of the GT Levelwind Series, a consumer fishing the
distant waters of the Jersey Shore reported a 6-plus hour fight
with an oversized Bluefin Tuna on a Penn 320LD.
The Penn GTi Series reels have earned high marks for reliability,
durability and functionality. They are great reels for their intended
purpose, catching fish, with the convenience of a levelwind feature.
There's a broad range of models, suitable for fishing moderate to
heavier line tests.
GT Level Wind reels feature an easy to
operate star drag, with the exception of the 320LD, which
utilizes a lever drag, a popular choice among anglers trolling
or live-bait fishing.

310GT2
The 310 just may get more use than any other reel you own, fishing local
waters. You'll find yourself using this as your preferred downrigger
reel, but don't neglect it as a dandy light weight troller and "rental"
rig. It's easy to operate, and you don't need to bother leveling the
line on retrieve. Unlike the similarly priced Shimano, I've found this
product to be very reliable through a lot of abuse the past couple of
years. I've yet to replace any
parts
on my own Penn, I can't say the same about the Shimano TR-100G I
own-which goes through about 1 levelwind tooth per month during the
season.
Features: one piece graphite frame, oversized HT100 drags, sealed
stainless steel ball bearings and lightweight aluminum spool. Sliding
anti-reverse button provides direct drive option, rugged clicker,
counterbalanced no slip soft grip handle.
Please note Penn replaced the old GTi series with the
GT2 series reels in 2009. Same basic piece as before, no real update. If
you are seeking a nicer levelwind, look at the Fathom. Much better
design and construction. They even have some freespool performance for
casting.

As a means to
reduce spam, we change the above incoming email
addresses regularly.
Please don't bother adding them to your address
book.
We do apologize for any inconvenience
this policy creates. But, it's the only way we've found
to post an email address on-line and not receive so many
solicitations from some family member of a deceased
"Nigerian" leader trying to move great sums of $ out of
the country...
CharkBait makes no guarantee on merchandise, product
