SPOOLING/RIGGING:

Please note, you will see many spooling options for the reels listed below. It's not our intent to confuse folks, but you do have options here unlike some places and we take pride in the fact we can rig things according to your needs, applications and preferences. We have been pioneers in Super Braid / Spectra rigging and we offer a few methods of rigging the lines together beyond most retailers capability, including the standard long range Bimini to Albright knots, Served and Sato connections. We do not use simple uni-to-uni knots for connecting braid to leader, we take the time to make a better knot, one that will hold up over time and deal with larger fish. Simpler knots don't work as well. You can see videos of what we do on our YouTube channel - CharkBaitUSA. We can upgrade that connection to one of several options, the benefit with those connections is that the diameter is thinner and that allows the line to flow through your rod's guides more smoothly, has less resistance in the water and is stealthier. If you have questions regarding rigging, please give us a call or zap back an email and we can go over things with you. Bottom line, you have options with us and we're proud of our staff's ability to rig things to your needs rather than simply "slapping" things together. Our knots hold, as does our in-line rigging.

PROMOTIONS

We have two excellent special offers going on right now on Penn's International and Torque Series reels. First off, all reels offered receive the benefit of FREE BRAID SPOOLING - and not just any braid. On the Big Game reels for a limited time we are including Toro Tamer's 16 STRAND HOLLOW CORE SPLICEABLE SUPER BRAID, arguably the best high end super braid on the market today. The new line opens up better than any other, making hollow core rigging downright easy (that's due to the construction of the line - 16 strands verses 8-12 for most other higher quality braids). You'll get 300 yards of the best braid made plus a free reel cover, and mono topshot if required. If you prefer, you can go "solid" on the braid, and even mulit-color depth counter if that's your preference. Of course you have many other optional ways to rig up, so pay attention to the spooling options when making your selection. If you don't need the braid, we have an alternate offer.

Your Pick: SPECTRA/BRAID - INCLUDING TORO TAMER SPLICEABLE HOLLOW CORE,

You choose either FREE offer and we'll adjust your billing on your final invoice which you'll see in your mailbox within 24 hours of your order (Monday through Friday). Receive superior quality Super Braid (gel spun polyethelyne line) spooling with mono topshot (if desired) at no additional charge. Both offers represent a value of up to $80, and both are excellent.

What's New?

Penn is changing their International Series Reels this fall - 2017. I saw them at ICAST, no doubt some improvement in design. Looked to me like the Penn guys spent some time with Okuma's Makaira series and Avet's Pro series reels to gain needed improvement to their designs.  Just my hunch...  Having said that:

I have some business-side concerns regarding Penn's marketing direction under present ownership, the result of that is some reluctance on my part to invest significantly in their products until I have greater confidence that the investment is prudent and that the new products offer significantly more than their predecessors (which were good for their intended application - trolling, but just not quite there for the long range flylining application which we focus upon). Here's where I have my concerns, as a retailer, regarding Penn's current marketing approach.

1. Manufacturers sell their products to retailers. Retailers make an investment in product from a manufacturer and then sell product to consumers/fishermen. Manufacturers pack big boxes, ship to retailers, and retailers ship small boxes to clients.  Seems simple enough. Manufacturers may limit their distribution to ensure that those selling their products have the capacity to adequately support their product's sales thru their product knowledge and direct engagement with the end user. However, under current management, Penn has elected to sell their product themselves via the internet rather than direct fishermen to Penn's supportive and stocking dealers. As a retailer, why should I invest in a product line, why should I support a manufacturer who does not respect that investment retailers make nor support their sales of product? Manufacturers should stimulate demand for their product, and fill that demand thru their investing retailers.

2. Retailers are requested/required to promote Penn products at a MAP price (minimum advertised price) or we lose our COOP dollars. Coop means cooperative advertising. So, when I advertise Penn products I can get back up to 5% of my purchases to promote their products. That's typical in this and other industries.  We like to be competitive, so we'll add some value thru free rigging or other incentives.  Penn has voided their own MAP pricing themselves by selling product below MAP on their own website! Penn also sells Amazon directly and by agreement with Amazon they have no control over Amazon's selling prices. So, I've seen instances where Amazon may have a lower price which we'd love to compete with under the same conditions - i.e. no free line rigging.  But, if I advertise a Penn product at the same price as Amazon, I'll lose my coop and be in violation of their MAP policy. Pretty stupid...and unfair.

3. Sales to Amazon - in the fishing tackle world, retailing a seasonal product is not easy. This year I saw several tackle retailers go out of business. Dealers compete for a fairly limited customer base. By selling Amazon directly, Penn is hurting their retailer base rather than supporting those dealers who invest in their product and can best demonstrate their product's merits. Amazon can not create a demand for a product, or help a fisherman use a product. They can simply offer a convenience and supply a product. Reality is that fishing tackle retailers need those sales more than Amazon. The playing field is not even, it's tilted in Amazon's favor since they don't have to support a sales staff, they don't spend time talking to folks about the best gear for their particular application, they don't have to spend money on display gear, etc... Amazon doesn't even have to turn a profit on fishing tackle, they'll make their profit from other categories of goods. So, they can take a loss for a few years, well knowing that they will drive out competition who do not have the benefit of Wall Street stock money fueling their operation.  Frankly, I've experienced Amazon selling fishing tackle under their cost, under manufacturing cost simply to gain traction in this industry. Once they gain the traction, they can raise costs to consumer. The consumer will lose because the retail base has been put out of business. Then where will the fisherman go for support? Where will the other manufacturers go with their product?  In this industry there are a lot of small manufacturers that will never work with Amazon, far too costly a sale in terms of both program and support. So, those other manufacturers are at risk of going away, and certainly fishermen will have a harder time sourcing those unique items.

4. Usually when a product is discontinued, lets say last years Internationals, a manufacturer will offer a supportive retailer a discount on the product. That allows the retailer to cost average, drop the price of the inventory they've held and create an opening for the new gear. Well, Penn again disrespected the investment their supportive retailers have made by stocking their gear. Penn did not offer their retailers a closeout opportunity, they simply cut price on their own website leaving their retailers holding the bag of old reels which need to be sold under cost in order to compete with the manufacturer and get out from under the old inventory.

Understand this clearly, I am moving towards the end of my time as a retailer, will turn 65 in 2018 and at some point in the near future will retire and fade away. I can afford to be honest with my complaints and concerns. I worry for the future of all tackle shops.  And, in terms of internet competition, bring it on! We've always been very competitive. But, it's not a level playing field. No retailer can compete with Amazon because the playing field is not even. All tackle shops have to turn a profit in order to pay staff and have a retail shop where folks can feel and touch the gear.  Amazon does not share those costs, they have a big warehouse and folks in shipping. They've outsourced most other employee costs, overseas. I'm expressing a personal opinion that what Penn is doing under current management damages retailers in this industry. I have long been a big supporter of Penn, thru several ownership changes. This time it's different, Penn's new owners are doing things which will hurt all tackle shops and ultimately hurt Penn.  (Penn's current owners are simply trying to ramp up some short term sales prior to selling Penn - Penn is part of a big conglomerate which purchased the firm as one small entity among others, like Rubbermaid.  They intend to sell off Penn and are simply trying to ramp up some sales to gain a higher sales price for the firm).

In years to come, when I retire, I'd like to have a tackle shop open so that I can get my own reels spooled up or talk to a sharp store manager or salesman about what I need to pack on a trip.  If your favorite tackle shop closes, if they can't support a properly trained staff, where will you and I go to get our gear rigged up? What Penn is currently doing undermines the relationship between supportive retailers and the manufacturer. Fact is, the more a retailer supports Penn, the more damaging Penn's policies are to that dealers survival.  So, even if Penn's product improves, I'll suggest that what Penn is doing from a marketing standpoint will speed the process of loosing qualified retailers from this field. Support your local tackleshop, and if you don't have a qualified tackleshop to support, well, that's where our Internet operation comes into play.

-Sincerely,
Mark Smith

Penn International
Lever Drag Reels

Penn's newest International reels were first shown at ICAST 2017.  Frankly, there are positives and negatives. Negatives, well I've addressed some above, but what about the gear - taking marketing out of the equation, how do the new reels stack up?

Penn's new line does indeed represent a significant improvement over what they've been supplying in the past. The older generation reels were good for what they were intended to do, trolling duty. But, at the rail there were other large game reels which killed them. Avet's Pro series set the standard back in 2005 and they've kept improving. Penn could not compete, that was clearly indicated by folks targeting cow sized tuna on the long range fleet. Then came Okuma's Makaira series, as we were first to announce, the Makaira series reels were game changers for the industry. That was proven fact. Penn went back to the drawing board, and I will suggest copied several design aspects of the Makaira design.  That's easily confirmed by anyone who does a side by side comparison and pushes the lever. Along the way Penn also copied some nameless bikemaker's handle... Okay, so the folks at Penn were not the most creative in coming up with better reels, but they are trying to make a better product. I'll say they did make a better International, but they got a bit silly along the way demonstrating they lost touch with the future of the big game market. Here's why I make that claim, and I'll stand to be corrected should I be proven wrong.

Penn announced TWO series of Internationals at ICAST. WTF? Yep, they made one line more in keeping with what those of us on the left coast prefer for our big heavy reels - bump up the drag capability and improve flylining freespool performance.  The other series they introduced was for their more traditional East Coast clients, softer drag performance.  You know, for the fellow who wants to fish 30# line on a 30 class International.  Now, certainly there may be a few out there who like big heavy reels for fishing 30lb on a 30 or 50# on a 50, but I'm thinking there ain't that many.  Okuma approached that market with a cam option which drops down the drag curve, pretty simply part swap. Avet did the same on reels appropriately sized for running sufficient capacity of lighter line - for sailfish and kings. Also, over the past year or so the IGFA allowed use of the newer super braided lines as backing. So, we don't have to troll or sit at the rail with reels weighing 5 lbs to fish light test lines. We can get the capacity needed with smaller gear that's more fun to fish.  In my estimation, Penn missed the boat with the dual moel approach. East Coast anglers have progressed beyond what was the norm prior to super braids, few guys fish straight mono, few need the bulk of the big game reels for fishing lighter lines. We will not stock the light drag models of the VS series International reels - they are special order only. Same for the expanded single speed models. Yes, Penn added a slew of single speed Internationals to the mix for 2018. Just what we need, two series of expensive International reels plus another round of big heavy single speeds... We're not going to invest in single speed Internationals, and frankly you shouldn't either. But, for those who love Penn, the new updated versions are indeed better reels than what was offered before in terms of weight, freespool performance and operation. While they've been out of the big fish game on long range boats for many years, they now have a series of reels that will do what their competitors have done so well.

*One point, the specifications Penn is providing had me suspicious at ICAST. Their claim of far more line capacity than typical for reels of this size had me thinking they were ingesting something which may cloud judgment...  Well, now I understand more. They based their capacity based upon use of their own line, which is suspect in and of itself. The new Penn Internationals hold the same amount of line as other reels of the same relative size (their arbors are still rather fat).  Penn played a diameter game on their specs.  And, with respect to the ProSpect line used, the stuff needs to be fully tested in the field before I'd load it on my own gear. Secondly, I'm hearing some claims coming primarily from some dealers on the East Coast, one not really a dealer but a very busy chat room wind-on maker claiming how great it is to get over 900 yards of 100# on a 20 size reel.  Silly, waste of money. I don't know of many cow sized tuna that needed anything more than 500-600 yards (if that) when appropriate line tests and drag pressures were used.  If you need 900 yards, well, you're probably fishing way too light a line or way too light a drag. Wrong gear for right fish...
~ Estimated actual capacity using industry standard super braided lines, Izorline, JB, Toro, Momoi, etc. We'll have these specs dialed in with greater accuracy upon spooling up more reels at our shops.

We've been waiting for these a long, long time. Penn's been out of the game, but they are back in a big way with their newer reels. The Fathoms and Squalls have been wonderful, and the Torques have been excellent, but we've lacked the 2 speed option. Heck, Penn pretty much invented 2 speed reels, so why didn't they come to the party... Well, what's done is done and darn it, these were worth waiting for.

These are among the most robust, and surprisingly lightest, of all two speed casting reels ever designed. And, they feel good, Penn took the time to test them, develop them, and build 'em right. The reels are International through and through, except these are better. They cast.  Of course you have a machined and anodized aluminum body and sideplates, a lightweight forged aluminum spool with line capacity rings, Stainless Steel main and pinion gears, 6 shielded stainless steel ball bearings of very good quality and a QUIET double dog anti-reverse system. That's a very good thing. And, even better you get a sealed Dura Drag system with Penn's excellent HT material. These reels are also made in the USA. The guys got 'em right, and while not an inexpensive reel, once you pick one up you'll understand that these are some very nice reels that won't let you down in the middle of a fight.

Penn's Torque Spinning Reels!

The new Torque Spinning Reels are now available.

Penn's new second generation Torque spinners took some of the features from their earlier production, dropped a feature or two, and incorporated some new thinking into the designs.  Penn left off the switch under the spool, used for selecting manual verses auto bail. The larger sizes are manual, the 5500 has an auto-trip bail. Like all Torque/International reels from Penn, these are made in the USA.  The Torques make use of Penn's new IPX6 Sealed Body and Spool design, their Sealed Slammer Drag System with Dura-Drag. You have 10 bearings, all stainless steel, all good quality, and an instant Anti-Reverse bearing with silent back up ratchet (dog). These robust all machined aluminum reels are made for heavy duty fishing, from boat or shore.  As in the prior series, there are three models in the line, 5500, 7500 and 9500.

We've received the 5500, 7500 and 9500 in silver as of this writing (5/16/17), waiting on the new reels in gold and the BLS models (non bail).  We'll do a little checking and fiddling here, but I have to say that my first impression is that these reels feel a lot "tighter" than the older models. Almost a Van Staal-like feel when cranking, and I'm thinking that this has to do with the sealing and saltwater intrusion resistance. The older Torques felt more Japanese when you turned the handle, felt more like Daiwa and others rather than Van Staal type tightness.  I'll try to gain more insight and post information as it becomes available.

Orders over $150 are shipped FREE!* Orders less than $150 are billed for shipping. Upon placing your order you'll receive an immediate confirmation via email. You are not billed at that time, the confirming email may not reflect oversize or overweight charges or other issues requiring direct contact. We process orders manually, preferring to have a human actually check things over and contact you should there be questions. Within 24 hours of placing your order you will receive a follow-up email confirmation and final  invoice (pdf doc) reflecting your total charges (Monday-Friday). You are not billed until we actually send you your final invoice.  Orders shipped to CA addresses will have California Sales Taxes applied, out of state orders are tax free. During the ordering process you can select expedited shipping if required. (Within the USA we usually ship via Federal Express ground. International, and oversize/weight items will be billed for shipping and you will be sent an emailed invoice reflecting total charges prior to actual billing. We will not ship without you having had a chance to review the invoice). Hawaii and Alaska shipping will be accomplished using USPS Priority service, and our standard shipping cost policy will apply unless the item ordered does not fit in their standard size boxes. If additional shipping fees are required we will contact you.)

As a means to reduce spam, we change the above incoming email addresses regularly.
Please don't bother adding them to your address book.
We do apologize for any inconvenience this policy creates. But, it's the only way we've found to post an email address on-line and not receive so many solicitations from some family member of a deceased "Nigerian" leader trying to move great sums of  $ out of the country...
