Travel Rods
CharkBait
stocking Okuma rods? We never have before 2009
simply because they never fit into our mix,
didn't match our
ideas of what a quality saltwater rod should be.
But, with recent changes in this firm's
orientation and product development we've seen
some innovative products that truly represent
positive advancements in design. There are
certain products Okuma manufactures that fill
niche applications very well, and represent
things worth owning. In my mind, their travel
rods are the prime example. Never have we seen a
nicer moderate duty saltwater travel rod.
There's nothing available that comes close to
what these rods can accomplish for the globe
trotting angler. Same sort of tale with the
Kayak rods, darn good ideas! Pricing for what's
offered by this manufacturer is very reasonable. Much as some of
Okuma's reels now meet the demands of serious
saltwater anglers, so too for several of the
rods these folks manufacture.
All rods
featured here have a LIMITED LIFETIME WARRANTY
FROM OKUMA!
All rods
featured here have FREE SHIPPING within USA!
(no, we
cannot ship 9 footers for free, and trust me you
don't want to pay for their shipping either.
Visit our shop for those guys.)
Okuma Makaira Rods
- Now In Stock
First shown at ICAST in
July 2011, the new Makaira series rods have
finally arrived. Folks know that we are very
supportive of both Calstar
and Seeker rods, consider them the best made
rods in the world, so convincing us to bring
in an offshore produced rod is not an easy
thing. However, in this instance Okuma got
it right again. Like their Makaira series
reels, they listened to the right people,
and started from scratch to design an
excellent series of rods. They learned much
from Calstar, one feel of their jigsticks
demonstrates that point very well. It's also
apparent that they learned much from their
association with the Australian fishing
community. These are flat out excellent
rods, and they are offered at an exceptional
value.
Makaira rods feature
newly innovated carbon technology in the
manufacture of the rod blanks. Light, strong
and responsive are well deserved adjectives
for these new "sticks." The new rods are
stunning in their appearance, with custom
abalone decoration above the foregrip on the
rods, and exceptional in their actions. They
incorporate ALPS deep press 316 stainless
guide frames with hard zirconium guide
inserts for handling braided lines. Their
jigsticks use x-wrap shrink tubing for the
grip area for ruggedness and secure
handling. Their heavier weight rods feature
a custom ALPS aluminum reel seat with
abalone underlay, for a truly custom look -
with solid performance backing it up. Their
IGFA standup rods feature custom leather
wrapped foregrips! And their trolling rods
use superior quality ALPS premium roller
guides for large knot clearance. Their
casting rods incorporate an integrated
rubber butt cap/gimbal design (both spinning
and conventional casting rods). On the
heavier trolling and popping rods, an
aluminum gimbal is included.
Shipping is included in
the price of the rods posted below. The 9
footers are only available for store pickup
- shipping expense is NUTZ!
Cedros Jigging Rods
If you are seeking a rod designed for vertical
jigging, then the Cedros Speed Jig Rods are well worth your
consideration. Designed with a unique flex-to-power distribution,
these rods allow your rod tip to work your jig properly while
developing the proper transition between the shock of a fish's
strike and rod power for bringing a fish to the rail (differing from
a well known bicycle manufacturer's noodle sticks - which don't have
backbone). Extensive innovation was created into the design of this
rod, producing comfort with spiral shaped EVA foregrips and an open
rear grip, allowing you to work the rod without hanging up on your
clothing to interfere
with
the action you are trying to impart on the jig. Once you put a reel
on your Cedros
rod you'll see why they truly are very worthy jig rods - regardless
of price.
Features
- E-Glass rod blank construction for
increased
power and shock reduction for use with braided line.
- Hardened Zirconium PVD coated guide inserts that reduce line
friction from braided lines.
- Hi-Rise 316 stainless steel guide frames eliminates the line from
touching the blank and foregrip when fully loaded up on a fish and
increases durability.
- Pyramid machined aluminum reel seat is the ultimate in comfort,
durability and control. (ALPS REEL SEAT)
- Exposed blank reargrip increases rod control and improves jigging
technique.
- Jig Clincher - eliminates the jig from swinging when attached to
the hook keeper.

All rods feature a split EVA butt section, with two of the heavier
rods also offering a gimbal butt.
Cedros
Coastal Rods
It
took us about a years time to finally decide to bring in the Cedros
Inshore series rods. We'd secured a few for clients, easy enough, but
then the guys working our Huntington Beach shop (John and Beta
specifically) said they wanted them here at the shop. Well, I still
delayed pulling the trigger until late August when I had the chance to
fish the darn rods for calico bass over at San Clemente Island. I was
more than impressed, and at that time we decided to bring 'em in,
along with a few other models of rods that we fished on that trip. The
rods fished very well, had nice action, excellent components, and they
were priced very competitively. So, they're now here.
The Cedros Coastals are made with lightweight
and
sensitive
graphite composite blanks, with extra
fast actions for positive hook sets. They use excellent ALPS
components, stainless steel double footed guide frames, Zirconium
oxide inserts so they're great for
braided lines.
They
use high grade fore and rear cork handles. The custom
ALPS anodized aluminum reel seat is a very nice
feature on these rods, distinctive, functional, and is a great piece
of hardware. All the rods in this series are one piece, for better
feel and strength, and all the rods have a stainless steel hook
keeper, with a Pac Bay rubber butt cap. The rods have a limited
lifetime warranty!
Nomad
Travel Rods
We've been getting
requests from folks looking for good offshore
rods, that can travel easily - for
years. Unfortunately,
there really haven't been any produced that
were up to snuff (with the exception of Penn's
discontinued light line Travel Rods). There
has never been an offshore capable travel rods
made to fish the heavier line tests we're most
apt to need, you know, the basic stuff like 20-50# class
casting rods. They were not made.
Well, Okuma created a
series of travel
rods
that will make breezing through high security
airports tolerable, cut "oversize" charges
from the bill, and provide you with some
quality gear that can deal
with larger version
saltwater fish. Remember all those times you
went fishing at a distant shore, only to find
the equipment deficient? Well, now you can
come prepared! These are effective fishing
rods for typical offshore fishing.
There are several unique
features these rods incorporate for your
advantage. The first thing I noticed is that
these three piece rods come with an extra tip
section!
With the added tip, you can now fish
two different line tests from the same rod.
Or, you can change up your action to match
your particular style for the day's fishing.
Nice thought guys! Unlike many multi piece
rods which simply won't stand up to the
pressure a saltwater fish can provide, these
rods use a European Spigot Ferrule connection
between sections of the rod. This is stronger,
and provides a one-piece feel when fishing.
It's a bit harder to put the pieces together,
but it's the right design for what we're doing
here. You also get an ALPS aluminum reel seat.
This is an expensive piece of rod building componetry, and is testament to the rods
overall quality and sense of purpose. .
No
more relying on whatever gear is at hand
when you go on exotic fishing trips.
With the Nomad Travel Rod series by
Okuma, now you can pack your own rods
with ease as you head out on ANY fishing
adventure.
Essentially two rods in one, each Nomad
Travel Rod comes with two separate tip
sections that provide distinctly
different actions, but through the use
of the European Spigot Ferrule
connection points, the rods have an
accurate and true "One-Piece" feel and
action.

CharkBait
Rod Socks
Our Chark-Sleeves are
a bit different than the one's above. They are
available in three sizes. The base of the
sleeve folds up onto the butt section of the
rod and then can be tied off. So, one size can
fit shorter rods with no problem. They are
made of 89% polyester and 11% lycra (like OJ's
gloves if you remember...). The material is
versatile, durable and quick drying. It's
super stretchy, and the micro polyester fabric
wicks away moisture - like those $60 golf
shirts. Nice product, nice price! These will
stretch up to one foot longer in length. So, a
5' will indeed fit a 6' rod, the 7 will
stretch to a tight 8.
