Caution - while we have been proud to represent Newell for many years, the firm changed hands after Carl's passing. The new owner has great plans for the future of this well respected firm, however we have experienced significant delays with respect to filling of orders. At the present time we have NO reels in stock, with no firm answer from the factory about when we might see more arrive - the last answer we received was that it would be two months before ANY PRODUCT would be produced. (SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER...it is now January as of this writing and no new stock has been produced.)

Newell Bearing Caps

Here's another excellent new product for those old school Newell fans. A log of folks have a great attachment to their Newell reels, and a bit of sadness that they are still not up and running. Maybe one of these days they will be... But, for those lucky enough to own one, some parts upgrades are available such as the frames that Tiburon is producing. Well, this week we have two new products designed to add some luster to your prized fishing companion. Over the years Newell had a few series of reels, some more favored than others, but all were very fishable pieces. One part that folks wanted to upgrade whether for cosmetic or functional reasons were their bearing caps and cups. The caps are shallower, the cups. Some of the Newell reels used a plastic cap which could be a problem in and of itself. Well, two firms have come forward with upgrades for us.

Tiburon has a nice stainless steel bearing cap. Just the cap and O ring, and it runs $20. Reel Speed has produced two products, both from Titanium: a Bearing Cap with shims and a Bearing Cup with shim washers and O rings 2 supplied. These run $18 and $20 respectively. If you are uncertain which ones are correct for your use, you may wish to contact John at our Huntington Beach shop or Mike at our San Diego location.

Upgrades for Newell Reels!

We've long been fans of the fishability of Newell reels. Unfortunately, since Carl Newell's passing the firm has been in flux. The new owner did not have the resources to continue the tradition, and manufacturing ceased. That may change in the future under hoped for new ownership, but for now we have something that's going to please anyone who owns a Newell reel!

Finally the guys from Tiburon have come to the rescue of those of us who desired upgrades of Newell reels. Specifically, they have now produced (or are in the process of producing) several much wanted upgrades! For the 200 and 300 series reels, you now have an excellent machined aluminum frame! There's even more to be excited about! They've produced a frame for the 440 and 533 series reels, and there's a new narrow version 533!!! For our Ulua guys. Tib will soon have a machined aluminum spool available for the 454, as well as a frame.  Further the new 550 frame and spool will be excellent additions to the reels our Hawaii guys love so much.
