Daiwa
Saltwater Reels Daiwa produces some
excellent reels, and they've really done
some great things with their newest
additions to the line. This Japanese
manufacturer is very conservative, they are
slow to introduce new contraptions, but once
developed they stay with a winner. An
indication of this is the Black Gold
spinning series. I've been using these reels
since I lived back in Texas...that's since
1984! The BG series are, in my opinion, as
good a spinning reel you can buy for
anywhere near the selling price. The
conventional style SL20 and 30 baitcasters
are standards out here, and very well
regarded for their light line handling,
casting, and smooth drags. Diawa has
some very strong contenders in the saltwater
arena, and their new models really hit the
nail on the head. Frankly, Daiwa's quality
and innovation in reel design was one big
reason why we elected to move away from
Shimano's anti-competitive BS. Daiwa
represents a better competitive value, their
quality is quite evident and they allow us
to offer our clients a better value without
the anti-competitive routine of the folks
from Shimano. Within the Japanese market,
Daiwa has long been considered the best.
They don't build bikes, they build fishing
reels...properly.

While
we were indeed sorry to see the old series of Saltist star drag
reels go away, I've got to say we are more than pleased to see the
new ones arrive so soon. We've got 'em, even though they weren't
supposed to be here until mid to late July! They're HERE!
The New Saltist Black Gold reels share some common
features, such as a one piece aluminum frame and sideplate, four
CRBB (corrosion resistant ball bearings) plus roller bearing. One of
the big changes is the finish of these reels. They are now anodized
instead of painted (yes, the older series had a painted finish, very
good but not as good as an anodized finish when it comes to wear).
The drag has also been upgraded to Daiwas's Ultimate Tournament
carbon drag which provides increased drag performance. There's an
infinite anti-reverse, machined aluminum spool and a centrifugal
anti-backlash control, and all the reels have clickers! There are
some significant upgrades on these reels, making them an even better
value than the older models. Pricing has not changed dramatically
from the older series, and that's some very good news, too!

LD HYPERSPEED
Here's the first of Daiwa's NEW
Product Introductions for the 2010 fishing season, the
Saltist LD Hyper Speed lever drag. The new reels feature a
blazing fast 7.3:1 gear ratio, exactly what may be required
to trigger an aggressive jig strike from fast moving
predatory fish. Folks targeting wahoo, kings in the Gulf or
breezing yellowtail off California will certainly appreciate
what these powerful speedsters can accomplished. For folks
working deepwater jigs, the added retrieve speed will
especially come in handy for those times when you need some
speed to get bit, and also for those times when you've
failed to get bit and it's time to bring the line back in
for another shot at the fish. Like the other lever drag
reels in the new Saltist line up, you get up to eight CRBB
corrosion resistant ball bearings, precision helical cut
stainless steel gears. Tournament quality carbon drags,
offset power handle, round speed knob, all aluminum frame
and left sideplate made from one solid piece of metal. These
reels are anodized, not painted. They also have a dual
infinite anti-reverse, and a machined aluminum spool. Lots
of quality in the production, lots of innovative creativity
in the design add up to a series of reels destined to many,
many years of pleasurable fishing.

"canned" images supplied by the manufacturer, we actually have the reels
in stock, and that's what we shoot. The model 40 pictured is Daiwa's
prototype, that one we had to borrow for the image since it's not

Reels
These new and enhanced reels are Baja X-Treme,
they are not for relaxed fishing, they're
made for hyperactive first to the boil gets
bit fishing. The reels are excellent for
tossing iron or bait. Reels in this series
reels feature Super Speed Shaft for longer
casts (like a neutral), selectable
centrifugal casting brakes, waterproof
sealed drags - waterproof, fast gearing,
tough marine bronze and stainless gears,
aluminum
spool, composite frame and sideplates, rod
clamp... For 2006 Daiwa upgraded the reel by
adding improved CRB bearings for enhanced
corrosion resistance. Unlike another well
advertised Japanese manufacturer Daiwa uses
shielded bearings for greater service life.
The handle was also upgraded for 2006.
The
Sealine reels are a very strong value,
offering great performance at a very
reasonable price. In past charters I've seen
the 40 and 50 models bring in tuna over 100
pounds! That's a nice score for a
lightweight casting reel, with a high gear
ratio no less.

Saltist Lever Drag 2 Speed Reels!
Daiwa
introduced a new series of saltwater
reels based upon their very popular and well
designed Saltist series of cast aluminum
reels. These new reels offer some features
sure to please anglers looking to combine both
speed of retrieve and cranking power.
While the smallest size reels arrived first,
we've now received ALL models into our
inventor: 20, 30, 40 & 50 sizes are all here
now.
Certainly Daiwa took a look at what Avet's
been up to for the past few years and came to
the realization that spectra has changed the
game in favor of the use of smaller gear for
bigger fish - if that gear is up to the
challenge. Daiwa also upgraded the drag
material to a carbon fiber design (again more
like Avet's been offering on all their reels).
Daiwa states that the reels will have 13-17#'s
of drag with freespool, and button down at
22-26#'s of drag. Pretty impressive specs if
they can live up to that level of performance.
They also feature 6 bearings, and a 6.3:1 &
3:1 gear ratio. All in all, it appears that
Daiwa will have some winners on their hands
with the new Saltist Lever Drag reels.
Introduced at the same time as
the two-speed LD's, Daiwa produced the same
reels in a single speed form. These single speed reels all share
a 6.3:1 gear ratio, and 13#'s of drag measured
at strike with freespool performance
(manufacturer's spec). Like the 2-speeds, the
little 20 will hold about 325 yards of 15# and
210 of 20# mono, the larger 30 size will hold
295 yds of 20# and 230 of 25# line. The 40
holds270 yds of 30# mono, the 50 holds 310

Here's a
superior statement in reel design and
execution from Daiwa. The Saltiga reels
represent Daiwa's finest effort, the ultimate

As we've previously stated, Daiwa had a great showing at the
tackle industry's big trade show held in July. They took the
show for saltwater reels, and that was the firm's focus for
2009 and 2010. This is clearly demonstrated in their new
Saltist Series of small lever drag, spinning and their
newest Big Game reels which grace the #1 spot of this week's
specials.
Daiwa's new big game lever drags
seriously update their tried and true 20 and 30 series
trolling/casting reel line. The
new reels feature a push button shifter (for the 2 speeds)
and offer bullet-proof reliability while trolling, and they
can spin with the best of 'em for casting duty, too!
The reels feature stainless steel gears, seven CRBB
corrosion resistant ball bearings, with dual carbon fiber
discs. The new reels have Daiwa's Infinite Spin feature

Daiwa's Saltiga Dog
Fight 6500 is a gifted performer, a piece
not likely to be owned by many, but loved by
those lucky enough to have one to call their
own. The Dog Fight is a statement piece from
Daiwa, no hype, no buzz word marketing, it's
simply the best reel Daiwa can produce in
the spinning arena - and Daiwa has earned a
long time reputation for building excellent
spinning reels.
The dog Fight pulls
up to 66#'s of drag, it's made for use of
heavy Spectra or braided lines. This reel is
indeed made for fishing tuna, amberjack and
marlin, to name a few of the species it will
grapple with. Technically the SA-Z6500HFD is
in a class by itself. It's free from
gimmicks and marketing buzz words (sorry
shimano). It's designed to be simple,
reliable, and better than the over-hyped
gear coming from the bike folks. Sealed
inside the waterproof, precision metal body
ride stainless steel and bronze alloy gears,
digitally designed and cut for maximum
strength and efficiency while winding in
over 50 inches of line with every turn of
the handle. Gearing is 6.2:1. Fourteen
stainless steel ball bearings transmit
energy smoothly and
efficiently.
Even the main shaft of the reel is specially
machined and supported to eliminate the
friction normally caused by the shaft
flexing under heavy loads.
One area of concern
in any heavy use reels is the anti-reverse,
the system that keeps the handle from
back-winding when you're setting the hook or
playing a fish. It takes a beating, and is
often a source of problems, in both
conventional and spinning reels. The Dog
Fight uses a dual anti-reverse, for
reliability, full time, so there's no on-off
lever to accidently trip and snarl line or
trap line in the heat of battle. There's
much more we could say about this reel, but
need not. It's Daiwa's best, and that says
it all.

It
took me a while to warm to this product, multi-colored lines have
earned a pretty poor review over the past years. But, it seems to me
the folks at Daiwa have a good thing going with their version of a
"super braid." Their Saltiga Braided line is a bit different
from the norm. It's a "super line" along the lines of PowerPro,
Izor, Jerry Brown... The thing that sets it apart is that it's
actually a darn good version of the super braid genre, and it offers
bottom fishing anglers a nice advantage. It's a five color line,
providing a distinct color break each 10 meters and with five and
one meter indicators so you know your depth with accuracy. It's a
smooth braid, not the stiff coated stuff you've come to dislike...
It really does have more of a feel like Izor or JB. It is an 8 braid
line, of thin diameter. (JB, BW and Izor are typically 12 or more).
It's not stiff, with an abraisive coating. It will deal with line
guides more kindly that at least one popular braided line we know
of.
Daiwa introduced this line as part of it's
Dendoh style power assist reels which were designed to fish deep.
But, this accessory product has a great future ahead on any reel
who's owner happens to do some bottom fishing.
We stock the line in reel filling 300 and 500
meter lengths as well as bulk spools of 1800 meters.

Here's something
that many guys have been waiting for. I know Max here at
the shop has been bugging me about this since ICAST. Daiwa
showed off a wonderful accessory at the show, a reel clamp
that fits most reel on the market. While it was made to
fit their Saltiga 15-50, Saltist 20-50, Leverdrag 20-50,
Levelwind 20-50 and Line Counter 20-50 (excluding their
Big Game Series). As you can see from the images, we put
one on a little Luna 300, and she fit! There will be a
broad range of application. The piece features a couple
spacers to allow a better match for different reels and
rods. It's a very nice piece of aluminum, strong, well
finished, sleek and smooth. It's very much a precision
product, and could be something you've been looking for.
They're not cheap, but they're darn good!
