Saltist Spinning Reels
spinning reels are solid performers,
amassing a string of saltwater and
freshwater records other reels can't
match. They feature rugged metal
construction, corrosion-proof hard anodized
finish, high performance drag combining
stainless steel and Teflon washers, rugged
precision cut gears and stainless steel

Daiwa's Saltist Saltwater spinning
reels were designed for all-out serious saltwater fishing.
They're simple, straight forward design can withstand the
punishment of heavy saltwater use - and saltwater fish, time
after time. They all use a manual bail trip for fewer moving
parts and greater strength and reliability. They even have a
dual, full-time anti-reverse that you can depend upon, with
no lever to accidentally turn off or snag your line. Daiwa
focused on reliability and performance with their Saltist
Spinners, just like the other conventional Saltist reels.
They're made for the salty stuff, and made very, very well.

The new best in

and justifies this type of performance.
The reel features a sealed spool system,

Simply put, they're
the best spinning reels made today.
Here's a run down from the
Japanese Daiwa site comparing the new
model to their prior top end model
(written by an Australian -
so don't correct the spelling...):
The Saltiga 5000H has a
handful of notable changes to its
predecessor; the ‘Mag Sealed’
waterproofing that has it a little freer
spinning, some rearrangements of seals and
drag, and a ‘Zaion’ graphite composite
rotor instead of an aluminium one. Funnily
enough, just about everybody who picks it
up comments on how light it is – but
that’s a trick of the mind, as it’s
actually a smidge heavier than the
original model. Perhaps the abundant
cut-outs on the spool, rotor and side
plates give the impression.
The Zaion rotor
concerns some people, but I think it’s
great. Sure you need an aluminium body to
hold all the gear train in precise
alignment, but the rotor is not critical
for anything like that. By going to the
graphite composite material, Daiwa has
avoided one of the potential problems with
an aluminium rotor on a jigging reel: the
scenario when an angler belts it into the
rail of the boat, unknowingly cracks a
bail arm mount, and then has it collapse
under load sometime later. The Zaion
material is flexible enough to forgive
that abuse, but unlike lesser graphite
composite materials, not so flexible that
it gets pulled out of shape by the
available 15kg of drag. Just right, I
Mag Sealed feature forms part of the
Saltiga’s waterproofing. The reel itself
is designed to be considered waterproof,
so when you wash it you don’t push water
into the bearings, and when you use it on
a beach you can actually give it a rinse
off in the suds to get the sand off it.
Beach anglers should like this very much;
between services, all you need to do is
rinse it under the tap. But the problem
with waterproofing a reel is that some
parts move and some don’t, so everywhere
the two meet, there has to be a
drag-inducing seal incorporated. The Mag
Sealed idea is used to minimise that drag,
and it was first used in the smaller Daiwa
Certates, which are relatively delicate
reels where extra winding resistance would
have been very noticeable.
The Mag Seal is a
waterproofing ring under the rotor, where
the greatest winding resistance would
otherwise be. It’s achieved by using a
magnetic oil, developed by NASA, as a
membrane held in place between magnetized
surfaces. Although it’s completely hidden
away, it’s probably the most important
feature of the new reel; the one that will
keep it feeling newer, longer.
took me a while to warm to this product, multi-colored lines have
earned a pretty poor review over the past years. But, it seems to me
the folks at Daiwa have a good thing going with their version of a
"super braid." Their Saltiga Braided line is a bit different
from the norm. It's a "super line" along the lines of PowerPro,
Izor, Jerry Brown... The thing that sets it apart is that it's
actually a darn good version of the super braid genre, and it offers
bottom fishing anglers a nice advantage. It's a five color line,
providing a distinct color break each 10 meters and with five and
one meter indicators so you know your depth with accuracy. It's a
smooth braid, not the stiff coated stuff you've come to dislike...
It really does have more of a feel like Izor or JB. It is an 8 braid
line, of thin diameter. (JB, BW and Izor are typically 12 or more).
It's not stiff, with an abraisive coating. It will deal with line
guides more kindly that at least one popular braided line we know
Daiwa introduced this line as part of it's
Dendoh style power assist reels which were designed to fish deep.
But, this accessory product has a great future ahead on any reel
who's owner happens to do some bottom fishing.
We stock the line in reel filling 300 and 500
meter lengths as well as bulk spools of 1800 meters.
Daiwa Accessory Reel Seat Clamp
that many guys have been waiting for. I know Max here at
the shop has been bugging me about this since ICAST. Daiwa
showed off a wonderful accessory at the show, a reel clamp
that fits most reel on the market. While it was made to
fit their Saltiga 15-50, Saltist 20-50, Leverdrag 20-50,
Levelwind 20-50 and Line Counter 20-50 (excluding their
Big Game Series). As you can see from the images, we put
one on a little Luna 300, and she fit! There will be a
broad range of application. The piece features a couple
spacers to allow a better match for different reels and
rods. It's a very nice piece of aluminum, strong, well
finished, sleek and smooth. It's very much a precision
product, and could be something you've been looking for.
They're not cheap, but they're darn good!
