Daiwa
Saltwater Reels Daiwa produces some
excellent reels, and they've really done
some great things with their newest
additions to the line. This Japanese
manufacturer is very conservative, they are
slow to introduce new contraptions, but once
developed they stay with a winner. An
indication of this is the Black Gold
spinning series. I've been using these reels
since I lived back in Texas...that's since
1984! The BG series are, in my opinion, as
good a spinning reel you can buy for
anywhere near the selling price. The
conventional style SL20 and 30 baitcasters
are standards out here, and very well
regarded for their light line handling,
casting, and smooth drags. Diawa has
some very strong contenders in the saltwater
arena, and their new models really hit the
nail on the head. Frankly, Daiwa's quality
and innovation in reel design was one big
reason why we elected to move away from
Shimano's anti-competitive BS. Daiwa
represents a better competitive value, their
quality is quite evident and they allow us
to offer our clients a better value without
the anti-competitive routine of the folks
from Shimano. Within the Japanese market,
Daiwa has long been considered the best.
They don't build bikes, they build fishing
reels...properly.
Daiwa Coastal!
In 2005 Daiwa really made some significant additions to their
saltwater line-up. While the Saltist
reels
garnered the most press, my favorite reel from Daiwa was their small
Coastal Inshore Special. This little baitcasting powerhouse is
right on the money in terms of offering what we need for inshore
fishing. It's small, but very strong, and it's made for harsh
saltwater conditions. The reel features total corrosion
protection, five CRBB corrosion resistant ball bearings plus a
roller bearing. The reel has a Centriflex automatic
centrifugal spool braking system to help eliminate backlashes.
There's an infinite anti-reverse, aluminum alloy frame and
sideplate, and a machined aluminum spool! The reel features a
stainless steel main shaft, perforated spool for faster startups.
The thing spins!!! It has excellent freespool for wonderfully
long casts! You've also got brakes! Great brakes!!
Featuring a seven disc/fiber composite wet drag system. Let's
review, seven element drag, five bearings, stainless steel where you
need it... And, loosening one screw allows you to pivot the
sideplate and pop out your spool for easy maintenance. The
Coastal is one very well thought out reel, and quite honestly one of
my favorites. If you're fishing 15# and lower line weights,
this little reel makes so much sense that it's a no brainer.
To make things even better, they're priced at only $139.99 and for
2008 Daiwa introduced a left hand version available, too.
Team
Daiwa Advantage 153 HSTA - Given how much we've liked the
Coastal, it was only natural that we'd also want to play with their
upgraded version with Magnetic Cast control, the 153HSTA Team Daiwa
Advantage. This version takes the Coastal several steps forward.
Again, it features a massive seven disc drag, plus the Magforce Z
anti-backlash control. There's a free floating spool to improve
already great freespool performance, 10 ball bearings and a roller
bearing, and an aluminum swept handle arm for improved center
balance. There's a lot more metal here too, it's a substantial
little reel that
feels bulletproof.
This
is a wonderful reel for the guy who really wants the best low
profile baitcaster built.
If you fish inshore,
brackish or freshwater, you can make a very good case for owning
this reel. The 153HSTA is my favorite inshore reel. Yes, Daiwa
forced me to buy on another reel. The first one we ordered was a
special order for a client at our shop. The second two went to guys
who work here. That should say something about how nice the HSTA is,
once you put her in your hands you'll also appreciate the quality.

Daiwa TD Zillion Coastal
The next level of Coastal
performance comes with the TD Zillion
Coastal, with the fastest gear ratio
available in a compact saltwater reel of
it's kind. You'll spend less time getting a
bait or lure back and more time working it
through productive waters, especially great
for topwater presentation. The TD Zillion
Coastal features a hyper speed 7.3:1 gear
ratio, picking up 32" of line per crank. It
has SIX CRBB corrosion resistant ball
bearings, plus a roller bearing. It also
features total corrosion protection with
specialized materials and anti-corrosion
treatments for years of reliable service.
It's swept handle offers less wobble, better
fell and maximum winding leverage. Like the
other Coastals it features a fast take apart
sideplate allowing for quick spool change.
It also features the Magforce Z automatic
anti-backlash system. The Coastal Zillion
has an eight disc drag with precision click
adjustment. It's rigid aluminum frame and
sideplate speaks to it's strength of design.
The reel weighs in a 7.3 ounces, and offers
up to 8.8#'s of drag. It will hold 150 yards
of 12# line. We stock this fine reel in both left and
right hand retrieves, and spooling is
available upon request.
Daiwa
introduced the Pluton 200H and 200HS at the
ICAST show in July 2008, and finally began
shipping in earnest in 2009. The reels feature
eight CRBB bearings, plus a roller bearing.
They are a machined aluminum reel, relatively
light in weight but robustly built for
handling Spectra and higher drag settings. The
Pluton features a magnetic cast control
system, housed within the removable sideplate.
You rotate the sideplate to adjust the
control. The reel also features an
infinite anti-reverse, which works superbly -
zero handle back-play.
There are two models, the 200H and 200SH
(higher gearing). The H model will be fast
enough at 5.1:1 speed and about 23 inches of
retrieve per crank, and it offers a bit better
drag performance with 13#'s of drag. The drag
performance is very smooth, noticeably smooth
drag and gears. The L models are left hand
retrieve.
The Plutons weigh in
at about 12 1/2 ounces and have a line
capacity of 185 yds of 12# mono/100 of 20#.
With Spectra you'll gain capacity with 300 yds
of 30#. Typical configuration (at no charge
from us) is 225 yds of 30# Spectra with a
topshot of about 50 yards to cover your
casting distance. We include up to 300
yards Spectra FREE. If you'd like a
topshot of mono, please make your selection
below. If you only want Spectra loaded, do not
specify the mono option. @ $449
Daiwa Luna!
Here's
another wonderful new reel from Daiwa. These new Daiwa
reels are made for fishing. Here's a great case in point about
the benefits of competition in terms of pressing a manufacturer to
build better gear. The new Daiwa Luna 253 and 300 are excellent in
design and execution. These new reels replace the 253 and 300
CVZ's. There are several upgrades. The reels are made from bar
stock aluminum, machined not cast. The exquisite machining is on a
level with Daiwa's Saltiga reels, same for the rich anodized gold
finish. They feature CRBB bearings for extended service life.
(Shielded bearings being less prone to maintenance issues than some
other nameless manufacturer's "open" AllRustBearings).
Most
noticeable with the new Daiwa Luna reels is the free floating spool.
Like the Sealine-X series reels, when the reel is in the casting mode
the spool totally disengages from the drive train. The reel
feature five corrosion resistant ball bearings and 1 roller bearing.
The 253 has a massive 7 disc drag, and the 300 features an 11 disk
drag system! Great power from both of these nifty reels. You'll
also notice the handle has been upgraded from the older CVZ's.
These are superb reels, in my estimation better than that other
nameless company's TE's (which they have the audacity
to try to charge $400 for).

Daiwa Accessory Reel Seat Clamp
Here's something
that many guys have been waiting for. I know Max here at
the shop has been bugging me about this since ICAST. Daiwa
showed off a wonderful accessory at the show, a reel clamp
that fits most reel on the market. While it was made to
fit their Saltiga 15-50, Saltist 20-50, Leverdrag 20-50,
Levelwind 20-50 and Line Counter 20-50 (excluding their
Big Game Series). As you can see from the images, we put
one on a little Luna 300, and she fit! There will be a
broad range of application. The piece features a couple
spacers to allow a better match for different reels and
rods. It's a very nice piece of aluminum, strong, well
finished, sleek and smooth. It's very much a precision
product, and could be something you've been looking for.
They're not cheap, but they're darn good!
