We
like Abu reels a lot, have for many years. They're good straight
ahead products, with high doses of fishability included. We
stock select products that have proven themselves very suitable for
inshore fishing. These include some old favorites as well as Abu
Garcia's newest introductions which are geared to our particularly
salty style of application: Revo, Amabassadeur, C3, C4 and Record
Series reels. Occasionally, we find some dandy buys of the more
unusual Abu's. It's always worth checking our Weekly Specials...
The REVO series of low profile
baitcasters offer anglers a wonderful range of high quality fishing
instruments in a compact and well thought out design. There are
several reels in the series, but we narrowed our choices to two
models, the SX and the Inshore. These two models fit our saltwater
environment, and fit into our thinking of what a good inshore reel
should represent. The reels feature a "Carbon Matrix" drag system -
meaning, carbon fibre drag washers, well suited to larger harder
pulling saltwater fish. They use an oversize brass main gear for
better cranking power and long term reliability. These reels are well
designed for going after stripers, bay bass, calico bass, shallow
water rockfish,... And, they cross over well to fresh water
applications, too.
REVO
Inshore The Inshore boasts some meaningful upgrades for saltwater application
in addition to their wonderful ergonomic design: 6.4:1 retrieve rate right and left hand retrieves
(lefty pictured) 6 Stainless steel ball bearings and a roller bearing Stainless steel crank shaft 6 pin adjustable centrifugal casting break 1 piece aluminum frame and crank side cover 175 yards of 12# line capacity 8.7 ounce weight The Inshore comes with two handles, one for speed and one for power.
REVO SX
The
SX is also an upgrade from the basic REVO design. You pick up some
things like a magnetic cast control by stepping down, you also gain
more bearings. Probably there will be a tad more maintenance with the
SX verses the more robust Inshore, but you'll also have a bit more
finesse. I think if you spend all your fishing time in salt water
you'll like the Inshore more over time. But, if you do more freshwater
than saltwater fishing, or are more inclined towards preventative
maintenance the SX will fit your needs well.

Similar to the Revo SX, the Revo S offers
similar features to the upgraded SX version, but lacks the
magnetic brake system. It's a 9 bearing model, uses the one
piece X-Craftic aluminum alloy frame and crank side cover
for great corrosion resistance and strength. Carbon Matrix
drag system for up to 24#'s of drag, with precision machined
Duragear brass gears and oversized main gear. They are a
6.4:1 geared low profile performer. The SX is an upgrade to
the Revo S. The S model sells for $129, the major feature it
lacks by comparison is the magnetic brake.
Abu came out with another wrinkle on the Revo base
with their STX-HS High Speed reel. It's another upgrade high
performance product in this versatile line. The STX features a 7:1
gear ratio! She's fast, very fast, and weighs in under 9 ounces.
Line capacity is 175 yards of 12# line. The STX has a dual cast
control system, with Infini Brake, a sealed centrifugal brake along
with a linear magnetic braking system. The benefit is a greater
range of cast control. The STX also makes use of the Carbon Matrix
drag material/system for improved stopping power. The reel features
an alloy frame and sideplates, and titanium wormshaft. You've got the
durability of brass gears and 10 stainless steel ball bearings plus
a corrosion resistant instant anti-reverse bearing. Low friction,
high drag, great casting all combine in the STX to deliver a
wonderful inshore reel. All and all, it's a dandy upgrade to the
Revo.
Abu Garcia
Revo Toro
The
new Revo® Toro™ baitcast reels from Abu Garcia® takes the sleek
and comfortable design of the low profile Revo reel and adds the
high-capacity spool size found on their world famous round reels.
This combination allows the angler to fight and turn a
hard-driving and long-running fish right from the hookset.
Available in two sizes, the Model 50 has a line capacity of 200
yards of 14-pound monofilament fishing line. The larger Model 60
will hold 250 yards of 14-pound line.
The low profile frame and side plate of the Toro is made of X-Cräftic™
aluminum alloy. This material is more durable and lighter than
regular aluminum and is highly corrosion resistant. The seven High
Performance Corrosion Resistant (HPCR®) bearings and Duragear™
brass gears add to the reel’s durability and long life. With
22-pounds of maximum drag, their Carbon Matrix™ Drag
System is double the strength of similar competitor models. This
is particularly
important
with the hook set on a lake trout, turning a tough snook or bull
red, or from keeping a monster muskie from entering a brush pile.
Both the 10.3-ounce Model 50 and 10.8-ounce Model 60 Toro reels
offer a high-speed 6.4:1 gear ratio version (50-HS and 60-HS) and
a cranking speed 5.4:1 reel. The Swedish engineered Revo Toro also
features an Infini II™ Spool design for the smoothest of
operations, six-pin centrifugal break, synchronized level wind,
line alarm and is packaged with both an Extended Throw and a
Paddle Handle. Salt or fresh, like all Abu Garcia® reels, they are
"Built for Life".
You
could say the Abu Revo revolutionized inshore fishing, their Toro
expanded upon the Revo's capabilities with an even stronger saltwater
reel made for extended use in the more demanding environment we commonly
fish. It is capable of taking larger fish, and does so with a sleek,
comfortable design with larger capacity. The newest Toro is perfect for
large crank baits, flipping and pitching plastics and jigs in heavy
cover. There are two reels in the series, both available in right and
left hand retrieves. They feature 6 Stainless Steel HPCR Ball Bearings
for solid long term saltwater performance, and a corrosion resistant
instant anti-reverse bearing. Actually these new reels feature a dual
anti-reverse! They use a new alloy frame and sideplate for additional
corrosion resistance and new spool design for extended castability
andheavier loads. Add duragear brass gears for longer life and heavier
use and TiN coated levelwind system for even line lay and durability,
and you have a long term fishing companion you'll enjoy for many, many
years to come. To make casting more effortless, these new reels also
offer a centrifugal
brake
for greater control. And, as their name might suggest, they have a
substantial Carbon Matrix drag system which is smooth and powerful. The
gear ratio is 4.6 to 1 for greater cranking power to match their heavier
drag. How much drag? Well, a bunch with up to 22#'s on tap, and weigh a
mere 10.3-10.8 ounces! And, they have clickers, too, as well as both a
double and single paddle handle for added versatility. The reels are
available in 2 sizes and both left and right hand retrieve. (@ 200 and

Ambassadeur
The
C3 Series of reels represents a great inshore duty reel. It's as
comfortable fishing freshwater as the salty stuff. Don't think they're
only for bass, I've taken plenty of yellowtail on these reels. They're
a good solid reel, with nice casting properties.
The C3's feature 3 stainless steel ball
bearings, 5.3:1 gears, a corrosion resistant anti-reverse, titanium
nitride line guide and a FastCast thumbar.
The C4 series builds upon the C3 series of
reels and enhances that offering with four stainless steel ball
bearings, a faster 6.3:1 gear ratio, and enhanced cosmetics.
The new Record series from Abu offers 4
stainless steel ball bearings and two roller clutch bearings and most
importantly their new Carbon Matrix Drag System. This allows the reel
to offer greater drag service life and heavier drag settings. The
Records also offer a six-pin centrifugal brake.
About 10 or so years ago Abu
made a model that I personally liked a great deal, as did other guys.
It was a Swedish model, a great improvement in "transitional" type
reels. By transitional I mean a reel that feels like a quality
freshwater piece, but is made for saltwater use - with upgraded
components, strength for better sized saltwater fish. The reels I'm
referring to were the old Morrum series. I still own a couple, and
every now and then I get a call from someone who reads something I
wrote years back, and thinks I can still find 'em. Well, there are no
more Morrums, but in my opinion they came back with a piece in the
form of the Ambassadeur 7000iC3 that's worth comparison to that
classic. The new model has some similar characteristics, and comes in
at a very nice price. There are also some shortcomings when compared
to the older Morrums, but then again the new C3 7000 is a fraction of
the price of the classic from a decade ago. I'll provide the
differences first: The C3 uses a post frame, not bad but not a one
piece design. 2 bearings, better drag material - 17#'s! The 7000 is
manufactured in China.
Big water anglers love the smooth casting
