Spooling Options

Mono

Spectra (as backing with or without topshot, reverse spooled...)

So, you're getting a new reel. It's not going to catch any fish without line on it. So, why not let us spool it up to your specification. We have the right gear and technique to spool your reel appropriately. Whether you want straight mono, Spectra backing with a mono topshot or reverse spooled with mono backing and Spectra on top for bottom fishing, we can do 'em all - and do 'em right.

For Spectra spooling, please select the spectra you'd like to run. Our preference for use as backing is Izorline Spectra. For bottom fishing PLine or PowerPro both do fine. Just select the Spectra, then the mono line test and manufacturer you'd like to run. We will fill the reel with the appropriate amount of topshot, you'll only be billed for what the reel requires.

Izorline basically invented the use of Spectra as a sportfishing fishing product. They first applied, tried, tested, re-designed Spectra for long range saltwater use. Through the innovations from Izor, new methods in fishing flourished. Greater line capacity was one key benefit from using Spectra as a backing. The other long term benefit of economy also becomes apparent since you only replace your topshot each season (or as necessary).

Pline is fairly new to the Spectra scene. Their Spectrex brand Spectra is green in color. They use a high weave count for strength and suppleness. It's a bit stiffer than Izorline, given the coloring it's a bit coarser as well. But, it's limper than Power Pro. It's functional as a backing, good for bottom-fishing. Casting properties are quite good. I would expect that it would wear fairly well. In a lot of ways the PLine Spectrex is kind of in between Izorline and Power Pro in terms of the line's characteristics.

Power Pro entered the market as a high end kite string. Don't laugh, that's not a bad thing. Unlike Izorline, which specifically targeted use with sportfishing, Power Pro had a little different mindset. Regardless, their line has become a staple for a lot of fishermen and applications. It's far stiffer than the Izorline Spectra, the coating rubs off (even when spooling). With that coating rub-off you lose some line test. It's coarser nature makes it a darn good line for bottom fishing in my estimation. Both PLine and Power Pro have a bit of an advantage in that application. In our subjective estimation Power Pro is a second choice for use as backing, and a top pick for use bottom fishing.
