Strike Master Reel Clamps!

A good reel clamp is an essential in my opinion. I remember going to a fishing seminar a decade or so ago and watching Ronnie Kovac demo a Penn 114 in a trolling application. He had another guy grab the line and pull on it while Ron held onto the bending rod. Suddenly there was a loud noise and BOOM, the reel went flying off the rod. The guys didn't bother to put on the clamp, the reel's foot bent under pressure and popped out of the reel seat. Not a good thing during a demo, and a real catastrophe when you're on a fish.

Here's the Great Stuff about these Machined Aluminum (and anodized) reel clamps. The six sizes offered will fit virtually every reel on the market (or at least 97% of 'em). The clamps are anodized in black and gold. The gold clamps are made two ways, one matching Penn Internationals and one matching Shimano's Tiagra line which has a lighter shade of gold. The three larger size clamps feature an eye (shown on the gold clamp above) which is useful with a lanyard or even better as a hook-keep when the line isn't in the water. You can use your existing reel's hardware, too! If you don't have your hardware, Backbone offers some useful kits for most every reel on the market. These things are well made, well thought out, priced right and capable of fitting just about every reel you own. They'll fit Penn, Daiwa, Shimano, Avet, Newell and many reels.

The Backbone - Reel Clamps

Smart move, nifty product, reasonable pricing, nearly universal application. These guys got it right. Backbone is a fairly new company. Their first innovative product is something all of us end up searching for, loosing, never quite liking... It's a back brace for your reel, a simple reel clamp. The backbone has a couple unique features, it has a hook holder built in, contoured making for a nice resting place for your index finger while one handing your rod/reel. If you're not using your reel clamp, do so. I've seen more than one reel come flying off a rod because of the fisherman not realizing the clamps integral necessity while fighting a fish. If you have a reel that uses a clamp, Backbone has a clamp that will fit.

There are two sizes of reel clamp; only two sizes will cover almost all reels made! Some of the reels will require hardware for use. For instance, Newell reels also will require a bh-20 (screws) kit. The reel clamps are available in several colors allowing you to distinguish your gear easily when you have the rods in the racks. This can be a time saver on a big party boat, makes it easy to find your gear.

Daiwa Accessory Reel Seat Clamp

Here's something that many guys have been waiting for. I know Max here at the shop has been bugging me about this since ICAST. Daiwa showed off a wonderful accessory at the show, a reel clamp that fits most reel on the market. While it was made to fit their Saltiga 15-50, Saltist 20-50, Leverdrag 20-50, Levelwind 20-50 and Line Counter 20-50 (excluding their Big Game Series). As you can see from the images, we put one on a little Luna 300, and she fit! There will be a broad range of application. The piece features a couple spacers to allow a better match for different reels and rods. It's a very nice piece of aluminum, strong, well finished, sleek and smooth. It's very much a precision product, and could be something you've been looking for. They're not cheap, but they're darn good!

Tiburon Universal Clamps

Tiburon introduced a universal clamp kit in 2009, available in four sizes (3 as of 10/09). The new clamp replaces the existing clamp, or can upgrade a non-clamp reel to the security of a reel clamp. The parts are all made from machined aluminum, in black.

Cork Puppy

A lot of West Coast fishermen use deckhand style rods, rods with a corktape grip wrap instead of making use of a more typical reel seat with a hypolon or cork handle. The corktape deckhand rods are preferred by long-cast guys - jig fishermen, and those desiring a longer rod and longer casts. Additionally, the deckhand rods allow the fisherman to mount the reel using a rod clamp in a more custom, more comfortable and balanced position, again aiding in longer casts. One drawback of this type of handle/grip is that the reel clamp tends to dig into the cork over time. Applying that clamp's pressure over a larger area reduces the grind on the cork and allows for a more secure mount. The Cork Puppy solves the mounting problem quite well. They fit the majority of rods, and reels made. If your intent is to mount a reel (that has a rod clamp) to a deckhand rod, this product just might be a necessity. There are three sizes, measured by the rod's diameter in the area you intend to mount the reel. It's made of machined 6061-T6 aluminum with type II anodizing.

Accurate Accessories

Accurate has introduced a few new accessory products recently. They introduced their new Pit Bull clamp assembly which goes nicely on a cork tape deckhand style rod. The rod clamp is much wider and less prone to loosening, slipping or getting mounted askew than a typical reel clamp. There's more to grip with on the optional clamp, robust too with six Allen nuts used for the attachment.

It will fit the Aftco #3, Fuji #26 and smaller reel seats as well as corktape rods that are around 1 to 1-1/8 inch in diameter.

For our reels, it will fit all the standard widths, the 665N/600N in all it's forms, the 665NN/600NN in all it's forms as well as the 870N 4:1.

It will not fit any of the 197/400N in any form, 870XN, 500N or B2-870N.
