NEWS!
The boys at Tib
have been working on getting their 50 on the market for
a couple years now. No matter how versatile their 30 is,
they still needed the extra capacity of a 50 series reel
in their line. Well, it finally happened! Here's the
deal, Tib announced this back in May and they produced
the 50 sized reels here in the States, on a pre-order
basis only. The reels became available to those
clients January 2011. Pricing for the first production was $1100. More
recently Tiburon refined production, gained some economies of scale
and was able to reduce pricing to $899 and $969 for the standard and
wide version of the reels. These are typically made to order, however
we try to keep stock in the following colors: silver, gold and black.
I suggest calling in or sending an email when time comes to order this
custom reel, to go over availability and colors.
Here are the
particulars:
SST50T - topless,
designed for long range fishermen. Drag range at strike
to over 50#'s and unmeasurable on the scales we use at
full. I can say that at 30#'s of drag at strike the
reels do 55#'s at full. Line capacity is 600 yards of
130# Spectra with 50 yards of 130# topshot. Available
gear ratios: low - 1:1 or 1.2:1, high - 3.6:1 or 4:1.
Weight is 64 ounces.
SST50W - wide
version with top bar designed for the tournament angler.
Drag range, 32#'s at strike and 45#'s at full. (Can be
increased to the same level as the 50T. Line capacity
is 800 yds of 130# Spectra. Gearing options, same as the
50T, weight is 66 ounces.

TIBURON REELS AND COMPONENTS
Tiburon SST Smart Shift Reels
Tiburon Engineering waited a long time
to get into the reel business. They
waited until they had something more to say than just the upgraded Penn
component enhancements that they could have come to market with two decades
ago. Tiburon made frames many of us used to upgrade our Penn
Senators, and handles such as the T-Bar. Their machining was
always first rate. They waited to produce reels until they really had something special to "say."
They waited until 2004 to introduce some of the most innovative reels
ever produced, the SST Smart Shift automatic shifting reel. Tiburons' automatic two speed
reel senses when to upshift or downshift, based on your preferences,
load and application. It's effortless, SST's are designed to perform
flawlessly, shifting under load like no other reel built. The idea had
been on Tiburon's drawing board for several years, but finances
prevented Tib from bringing the design to market. In
2005
the first SST's were produced, at a cost of almost $900! The following
year, Tiburon was able to reduce costs given manufacturing efficiencies
by almost $200, making their reels available to a wider group of
discriminating anglers.
These are the kind of reels that become
somewhat addictive. Most guys I know that buy one, end up with a couple
more within two year's time. (I'm a good example of that, owning a 30
and 16 and still pining for an 8). Having said that, the relatively high cost
of Tiburon SST reels prevented many fishermen from ever having the
opportunity to fish their reels. Frankly, it slowed their growth as a
company and prevented them from bringing other products to market, such
as a 50 size Tiburon SST. Tiburon has great ideas and designs, but
limited manufacturing capacity. In July 2008 Tiburon made a move that
will change things for the better. They announced their partnership with
Okuma. Tiburon's
engineering staff will help design Okuma's next generation of saltwater
reels and Tiburon will gain the production
economies they could never have reached without such a partnership. This
will be a synergetic association that will truly benefit all parties.
Tiburon SST reels have become more affordable, and we'll finally see Tib
produce that 50 we've been waiting on for several years. From Okuma's
perspective, they will gain the insight and experience of Tiburon's
design team which has already resulted in a new reel coming from that
firm that is a solid performer (the Cavalla*).
*In my mind, the new Cavalla is the first
saltwater conventional design Okuma has ever produced that's worth
owning.

Big
power, smaller size! There three sizes in the 7500 series, appropriate for 20-50# fishing.
It's all a matter of line class, use of spectra for backing and your
particular taste in deciding which one or which ones you want to go with
for your particular application. They're all sweeeeeeet! They have
proven their worth as wahoo specialty reels, bottom fishing, and for
dealing with school size tuna.
For those new to the Smart Shift
design, they're automatic shifting two speed reels. All three of
the new reels feature 5.9:1 and 2.8:1 gearing. You've got speed
for winding iron or a wahoo bomb, as well as some power when the fish
decides to get feisty. They spin very well, cast great, and the
drag performance is nothing short of confidence inspiring. These
are among the finest reels money can buy. They work well. I
only have two concerns to express about 'em. First off, be
prepared and forewarned. If you don't already own one of these
reels and you purchase one, don't think that it will be your last.
Most of our clients who have bought a Tib Smart Shift reel from us have
come back for more. They're that good. The next concern
comes from a deckhand who mentioned to me that he didn't like the SST
reels. His complaint, "When folks get their fish to the boat
they're still green." What he meant is that because this reel
design keeps pressure on the fish all the way to the boat, the fish
doesn't have a chance to tire you out and they can still have a bit of
fight left in 'em. That's a good thing for both angler and fish in
my estimation. If you practice catch and release it's going to be
easier on the fish. If you practice catch and kill, well, you'll
be getting your job done a whole lot faster!

Smart Shift - Automatic Shift Two Speed
Reels
The
larger sized Smart Shift reels offer increased drag capability and line
capacity. These were the first models made by Tiburon several years ago,
and they helped create the "buzz" that generated so much excitement and
interest. Since that time the SST's have proven their point and taken
their share of fish. Heck, I even landed a 200# class yellowfin on my
30. Yes, I own a 30 and a 16 and am lusting after an 8... But, they've
taken much larger fish than I can boast, up to 300# tuna so far! I found
that the fight did indeed take less time, since there was always
pressure on the fish. When the fish came towards the boat, the gearing
would bump up. When the fish tried to turn it's head, we'd drop down in
gear and keep more pressure on the fighting fish. It's a great system,
it works and it's a wonderful tool. Another application that's proven
the worth of this design is bottom fishing for larger size grouper.
You've got the low gear cranking power that's so necessary in keeping
these fish from their holes. And, just like I found fishing yellowfin,
you'll bump up in gear ratio as the fish turns towards you to wrap up in
something which normally would probably cut your line. In the case of
the Tib, the fish doesn't get the chance to get you in trouble. It's a
wonderful tool, and the newest versions of the Tiburon SST's are better
than ever.

Folks, purchasing an
expensive reel like a Tiburon, a reel you have
likely not had the opportunity to fish, may be
a risky proposition. Can the reel
perform as described? Are they worth the
money? I can flatly say YES! We have
many happy clients, guys who bought one and
have come back for more. That's quite a
testament of any manufacturer's product,
especially given the expense of Tiburon reels.
When their performance is factored into the
equation, well they really are not so
expensive. Here is a letter I received
6/26/04 from one of our clients regarding his
experience with a Tiburon reel:
Mark,
I don't have all the stuff for logging in to
your bulletin board, but wanted to let you
know about my Mexico Midriff trip using the
Tiburon 2speed. I came into your shop
and asked you to talk me out of buying the
Tiburon 2speed to replace my stolen
Accurates. You warned me that after
using the Tib, I wouldn't want anything else
and would probably end up buying more Tibs in
the next larger sizes. I bought the
smallest Tib and you matched it with a GUSA
6 1/2 rigged for 40lb. That combo was
just unbelievable. The Tib casts like
a dream and GUSA has the perfect midsection
for horsing the hogs. I took unfair
advantage of 30lb class YT casting iron and
flylining live mackerel. We were in
60ft of water with some nasty bottom
features that sawed off a lot of big fish.
The Tib performed flawlessly, shifting to
low gear when necessary and high gear when
they charged the boat. I was able to
cast even the lightweight surface jigs with
no problem. Backlashes were minimal
and mostly the result of operator error.
I have a beautiful Badfish wrapped 700M and
Tiburon framed, highspeed Jigmonster, but I
let my guide use it the whole time. I
just never wanted to put down that Tiburon
2sp.
The rig cost me nearly $1000, including rod
sock, Chark hat and free shirt, but it was
money well spent. I'm not a rich man
and pay a minor fortune in spousal/child
support, but that was the best money I have
ever spent. Thanks for being an honest
businessman and fellow fisherman.
Feel free to pass my comments on to anyone
that has an interest including the people at
Tiburon.
BRAVO ZULU to Charkbait and Tiburon for the
best fishing experience yet.

Cavalla is the first saltwater conventional reel
