What's New for 2015?
Okuma Metaloid Reels

New ICAST INTRODUCTION - Here's one we were very excited about, actually a few more than one. In the Metaloid Series there will be three sizes, 5 narrow, 5 and 12. We have received a limited number of the 5N and 5 sized reels in both single speed and two speed forms. And, a few of the 12's have made it into inventory as well. The new series offers a rigid 1 piece frame and left sideplate, 6061 T6 Machined aluminum frame and sideplates. The reels are cold forged (not machined - same process as the infamous bike makers $500 models...), type 2 anodized. The spools are made from machined aluminum. They feature a corrosion resistant coating process as well as the anodizing for dealing with saltwater corrosion issues. All reels in the series offer 4 ball bearings and best of all they offer 17-4 grade stainless steel helical cut gears!. The drag system benefits from Cal's drag grease and Carbonite drag washer. All models offer a clicker, and the freespool performance is simply amazing. The price is very aggressive, definitely puts all other manufacturers on notice. There's even more to talk about, handle, arm construction... Bottom line, these should be some excellent reels and their price point, their value, construction (my gosh helical gears!) simply sets new standards for the fishing reel market.

At ICAST 2015 Okuma showed off two new color variations to the Metaloid line. These are now in stock.

Add to all this great stuff one more thing that beats all other manufacturers: THREE YEAR WARRANTY - FROM A REAL COMPANY THAT STANDS BEHIND IT'S PRODUCTS. In the case of the Metaloid Series reels, in all honesty we have seen some problems which we reported to the factory in 2014. No major issue with single speed reels, some problems with two speeds. Okuma has worked to resolve, and perhaps has done so. That's the reason these reels have been repeatedly delayed. That problem caused the delay with the Andros series. AT this point in time, 9/1 supply is catching up to demand and the QC issues on the two speeds appears to be resolved. Regardless of their false start, the warranty support from Okuma is top notch.

Several years ago we introduced our clients to the Makaira series of reels. We were the first one's to discover just how good they were and we took the time to try to educate folks, to erase old prejudices and give 'em a try. We were proven very right. We also explained to folks that Okuma is the sleeping giant in reel production, and to expect great things from them. They have proven their point - Okuma can build a great reel, and now they are entering a new level of dominance with this series of popularly priced reels.

Okuma Andros Series A 2 Speeds
New Product Introduction

First shown at ICAST in July 2014, the new Andros Series reels are now arriving with some serious delays in the 12S and 16 due to the serious QC problems of the Metaloid Series reels.

We've now received Andros 5NII, 5II and 12 size reels. The 12S and 16 sizes will arrive in late July and August respectively. (Make that December or...who the heck knows at this point...) The previous model Andros 2 speeds were superb, I well know having purchased both the 5 and 5N myself. I fished the crap out of 'em over the past 2 or 3 years, they were my go to reels for their line class - fishing these for 20-40 lb test lines (40-50 lb braid as backing). The new reels go my own previous generation reels a few steps better, pricing dropped, cosmetics in my mind improved, construction got beefed up a bit, oh, did I mention the price dropped. The first one I bought cost $399...the new ones $319! No buyers remorse here, I love those reels, but no doubt the new versions are even better. The new 12 and 16 sizes have not arrived yet, but we'll post those anyway so folks can get a jump on delivery.
(Note, we always use our own images with very few exceptions, confirming that we actually stock the products represented and have them here unlike some folks on the 'net...we're showing the 5's, those arrived - we are waiting for delivery of the 12S and 16 sizes).

NOTE: The Andros 12S and 16 sizes are not available. We do not have a FIRM date on when the piece will be available, it's been delayed by the manufacturer. Best guess is early December. That is only a guess...

CharkBait sells Okuma? Some may agree, some disagree with my take on Okuma's products in past years. Reality is that we did not support this manufacturer. I was always honest with folks, explaining that while their spinners had gained a very good reputation, they'd never made a conventional reel that I liked enough to sell here. Here on the left coast, spinning reels are uncommon on the larger sportfishers. So, we never had much of an incentive to bring in that part of the Okuma line-up. With their conventional reels there were issues in terms of drag performance, corrosion, reliability.... With the Okuma's conventional reels, my negative impression was based upon client feedback, our own evaluation of the products, and service records from some landings that had used their gear. Having said that, we also have some of our clients who liked their gear...often after using Okuma's factory service and having some upgrading done... So, this point still didn't impress us with their out of the box performance, but it did impress us with their commitment to providing customer service through their investment in the repair department. Bottom-line, if the gear isn't up to speed, up to long range fishing demands, we don't invest our money in stocking the products. Nor do we offer things we don't inventory, unlike some folks who only operate on the 'net. Well, things at Okuma are changing for the better!

Here's the deal, in July 2008 Tiburon Engineering and Okuma reached an agreement in which Okuma would produce Tib's SST reels, and Tiburon staff would design some saltwater worthy reels for Okuma. This provided Okuma with the expertise they've needed and Tiburon gained the benefit of Okuma's production resources. That's a serious win-win for both firms. Further, Okuma invested money in hiring a great team of guys who knew saltwater fishing. They upgraded their staff, and showed they were changing focus in favor of actually building high quality gear. Okuma has been a sleeping giant in sportfishing tackle. Heck, most of the CNC machines used by the better reel manufacturing firms are made by Okuma! They're huge, deep pockets, make most overseas firms look insignificant in terms of company capability and resources. With Tiburon's assistance, we're betting Okuma's time has finally come (in the world of saltwater sportfishing). We will only focus on the products we feel meet the needs of saltwater anglers, and meet the performance requirements for this most demanding sport. (note the above was written in 2008 - in 3 years Okuma proved we were right in our evaluation...)

Okuma's service department deserves mention, because those guys did stand behind their older products. They did not run away from problems, they took steps to solve them. Take this philosophy, add to it improved designs, and we have the makings for a new powerful player in the saltwater fishing marketplace. Okuma now produces  some reels that we like enough to recommend to our clients, without reservation. Hard to believe, but very true.

Video: Okuma Makaira Series Reels

Okuma Makaira

I first saw this new series of reels at the July 2009 ICAST show. I was flat out impressed. Without doubt, this is a game changer for the sportfishing industry. Okuma listened, listened well, and applied what they heard in creating what may very well be some of the best built reels on the market today. The reels are robust, solid, creatively engineered, and made to go the distance.

All the new reels feature a carbon DFD (dual force drag) system for exceptional drag performance, high drag capacity, long term reliability and maximum alignment and durability. The Makaira reels offer a "Pull Bar Drag System" with the advantage that the drag is being pulled rather than pushed, which places heavy pressure on the left side plate and utilizes the frame for overall stability - that's the flaw of design in all reels built today, and Okuma feels they've beat the system. With the Pull Bar design, there's no pressure to create frame flex, or reduced drag pressure as a result of tolerance alignment issues. As a result of the design, the open top models in this line have none of the flex issues common with other reels; no need to compensate for the disadvantage of design by increasing mass, for instance.

The highly efficient drag system was designed and engineered by Tiburon Engineering to increase maximum drag pressure, reduce side load pressure on ball bearings and improve heat dissipation for long term smoothness over extended fights. The Okuma DFD is considered a wet drag system comprised of two carbon fiber drag washers that are sandwiched together and bonded with a fiber glass core. Pure carbon washers are coated with a thin layer of Cal Sheet's Universal drag grease for virtually zero start up inertia. These washers are compressed by two precision ground 17-4 grade stainless steel drag plates that have been ground flat, then polished for maximum smoothness. The stainless steel friction drag plates have a minimum 32 Rockwell hardness allowing for high-end drag settings and consistently smooth drag performance at all ranges! (Model 20 pictured above)

Other important points of design:
Silent anti-reverse, 16 point double dog anti-reverse for the most reliable, smoothest and strongest anti-reverse on the market. These reels so not depend on a one way bearing for their anti-reverse, yet they have a similar slick feel to them. Robust!
Helical Cut Gears, offers improved gear meshing, and gear smoothness. They feel like butter being sliced when you change gears. They're both smoother and stronger as a result of their design.

Okuma Makaira SEA Reels

They aren't for everyone, but for those who appreciate the enhancements and have the highest demands, they are reels to die for. Okuma's Makaira Special Edition Long Range reels take things to another level in terms of specific changes that some in the long range community have requested. Before getting into that, let me state clearly, the existing crop of Makaira reels are absolutely state of the art, and for most of us, myself included, there is little reason to head in the SE direction. The changes you'll see in the SE series reels appeal most to fishermen who are uncompromising in terms of their demands upon gear, guys who regularly head out to tangle with cow size tuna on the long range boats or aboard a sportfisher off Puerto Vallarta, those that will benefit most will be our most dedicated long range enthusiasts. Those that will benefit least will probably be private boaters, guys who tend to put on heavy miles on their gear and don't take the time to maintain 'em regularly. In a lot of ways the SE reels are custom shop offerings, based upon feedback from some of the most experienced anglers, guys who jumped on the Makairas early and fished 'em hard on the long range boats in 2010/11. To those, Okuma listened and responded, showing their sincere interest in building the best gear possible. The pricing of the SE series reels is a tad higher than the original Makaira reels, reflecting the change in handle and bearings used on these pieces. If you are seeking the best freespool performance, flylining live bait to large grade tuna, this series of reels will put a smile on your face and very likely result in a personal best on the boat.

50SEA pictured below:

Okay, now for what's different on the Special Edition reels, the SE Series reels feature:
- Open Spool Bearings with TSI-301 oil. This increases freespool 2 to 2 1/2 times!
- All non-spool bearings feature FULL grease pack for maximum longevity.
- Special Edition Gun Smoke and Black anodizing.
- SE reels have a yellowfin tuna etched into the side plate to further distinguish them from the Golds.
- Frames have been machined out for increased clearance between the spool and cross bars.
- Larger Handles, MK-8/10/15 reels will feature MK-20 size handle knobs for greater leverage.
- Larger Handles, MK 20/30 reels use the 50 size arm and knobs.
- New LOWER GEARING on the 20/30 size - 1.3:1!!!

And, for folks who own current Gold series reels you have not been forgotten. If you'd like any of the modifications mentioned above, the folks at Okuma will update your reel for $29-59 depending upon what you'd like done.

Andros 5 & 5N

The small Andros two speed offers a compact design similar in size to an Avet MXL (a tad narrower and smaller). This is another powerhouse of a reel, robust, high drag capability, smooth shifting leverdrag. The Andros is made for fishing 15-40# line, and doing so very well. For 2013 Okuma introduced the 5N, a narrower version of this excellent reel. FOR 2015 THE 2 SPEEDS WERE REPLACED WITH NEW MODELS, THE SINGLE SPEEDS REMAIN THE SAME.

The New single speed models cover the same performance levels, with only the higher gear - no low gear option. They also do away with the cast control feature. The single speeds have a blue spool and minor cosmetic differences, but basically they are the same reel less the push button low gear and mag cast dial. Casting performance, corrosion resistance matches up 100% in use.

6.4:1 42.1" 24-lbs 15-lbs 13.4 oz $289.99
Spooling Suggestions: Lots of ways to put this reel to use, my favorite for fishing bait is to run a short leader or simply a 25 yard spool of Seaguar Premier into hollow braid, knotless style (20-40# would be the range I'd fish the reels - with 30-40 my own preference). For the 5II I'd suggest going with the 50# and for the 5NII run the 40# 16 Strand Toro Tamer Spliceable Hollow Core Super Braid. Going that route you'll have over 400 yards available of braid to keep your topper company. You can certainly go with "solid" and a knot, straight braid or straight mono... But, if you run the hollow with the in-line rigging you really have one stealthy rig that will cast beautifully and you will catch more fish, at least that's my feeling...and I own one.

Okuma Andros reel used on Polaris Supreme 5 day last week

Hey, thanks for setting me up with a great reel.  It seemed too tiny to do what it did, and did it well.  We were into Bluefin over 60# and it never balked.  I checked the drag each evening and it stayed close, fricking amazing for what looks like a fresh water bass reel.  I fully expected it to fail under the conditions we were in (and with a 50/40 set up getting used hard).  Maybe that company has stepped up design and quality control. Also, thanks for the freebee package you sent to my dad (John Costello).  He caught the #2 and #3 fish on the same reel.

Okuma Cedros Jigging Reels (and more)

Cedros Star Drag 10, 12 & 15

Arguably these are the best star drag reels on the market today. If you liked the old Daiwa Saltiga star drags these reels take that style reel in a very positive direction with improved drag performance, excellent machining, casting, the flexibility of a star drag and darn sweet cosmetics, too. While a lot of reels have moved towards the lever drag form, there are reasons to work with a star drag. You can button down the drag without having issues with side load crunching a bearing. Freespool performance is naturally quite good. You can do some fiddling while you are on a fish if necessary. When time comes for casting, these are excellent reels that do much more than dropping jigs to the bottom. They a flawless casters. I'm not sure which came first in their design, casting or jigging - but they do both roles very, very well.

Pictured above the model 10, the 12 is just a tad wider for greater line capacity.

Opinion: "The Cedros star is the BEST Star Drag Reel on the market - that's my take, powerful, light, super drag. If you are into jigging, I consider this a must have piece."

Here's Okuma's run-down on the reel:

Beginning with a stunning A6061-T6 blue anodized aluminum frame with ported cross bars and continuing with machined aluminum side plates and gunsmoke anodized spool, the Okuma Cedros star drag backs outward beauty with incredible structural integrity. Producing up to 28-pounds of smooth drag thanks to its’ multi-disc Carbonite caged drag system and incredible freespool driven by 5BB+1RB Japanese stainless steel ball bearings, size 10 and 12 Cedros star drags deliver exceptional casting performance for live bait, iron and jig applications . Oversized machine cut brass gearing and fast 6.2:1 gear ratio deliver total control right to the palms of your hands. Cosmetically matched and balanced to Cedros Speed Jig rods, you’ll find this versatile combination in your hands throughout an incredible range of applications.

Okuma Cortez - NEW!

Here's a reel we first previewed well over a year ago, and have been waiting patiently ever since... Much like the Cedros star and lever drags, good things come when you wait 'em out. The new Cortez is an innovative reel, made with good materials, offering very good performance at a value conscious price. Much like Daiwa's Sealine (check Special #2) it's going to prove itself a workhorse reel, a great reel for someone new to saltwater fishing. It's a very good balance of features, performance and value. The Cortez utilizes a corrosion resistant graphite frame and sideplates, with a machined aluminum anodized spool. The reel features a multi-disc Carbonite drag system, for very good stopping power. The star is made from strong forged steel, and the handle is made from anodized aluminum, and is swept inward in design to reduce wobble while cranking, and there's a soft grip handle that feels right in your hand. You've got 5 bearings to help the reel spin well on a cast. The Cortez has a dual anti reverse system, with both mechanical and roller bearing used in manufacture. The gears are oversized, so you've got some good cranking power despite the high gear ratio (that will help you get bit) of 6.2:1. The gears are self lubricating and the Cortez series reels offer a 1 year manufacturers warranty. Not a bad combination of features, and the price isn't half bad either at $129! Oh, did I mention, the reel has MAGNETIC CAST CONTROL, TOO!!! (note the dial on the sideplate)

For 2013/14 Okuma expanded the series to include a new model the CZ-5CS. The smaller reel incorporates all the positive features of the other reels in this series, including the magnetic cast control.

Within 24 hours of placing your order you will receive a follow-up email confirmation and final  invoice (pdf doc) reflecting your total charges (Monday-Friday). You are not billed until we actually send you your final invoice.  Orders shipped to CA addresses will have California Sales Taxes applied, out of state orders are tax free. During the ordering process you can select expedited shipping if required. (Within the USA we usually ship via Federal Express ground. International, and oversize/weight items will be billed for shipping and you will be sent an emailed invoice reflecting total charges prior to actual billing. We will not ship without you having had a chance to review the invoice). Hawaii and Alaska shipping will be accomplished using USPS Priority service, and our standard shipping cost policy will apply unless the item ordered does not fit in their standard size boxes.
