We have been pioneers in
Super Braid / Spectra rigging and we offer a few methods of rigging the
lines together beyond most retailers capability, including the standard
long range Bimini to Albright knots, Served and Sato connections. We do
not use simple uni-to-uni knots for connecting braid to leader, we take
the time to make a better knot, one that will hold up over time and deal
with larger fish. Simpler knots don't work as well. You can see videos

connection to one of several options, the benefit with those connections
is that the diameter is thinner and that allows the line to flow through
your rod's guides more smoothly, has less resistance in the water and is

CharkBait sells Okuma? Some may
agree, some disagree with my take on
Okuma's products in past years.
Reality is that we did not support this manufacturer. I
was always honest with folks, explaining that while their spinners had
gained a very good reputation, they'd never made a conventional reel that I
liked enough to sell here. Here on the left coast, spinning reels are
uncommon on the larger sportfishers. So, we never had much of an
incentive to bring in that part of the Okuma line-up. With their
conventional reels there were issues in terms of drag
performance, corrosion, reliability....
With the Okuma's conventional reels, my negative impression was based upon client feedback, our own
evaluation of the products, and service records from some landings that
had used their gear. Having said that, we also have some of our clients
who liked their gear...often after using Okuma's factory service and
having some upgrading done... So, this point still didn't impress us
with their out of the box performance, but it did impress us with their
commitment to providing customer service through their investment in the
repair department. Bottom-line, if the gear isn't up to
speed, up to long range fishing demands, we don't invest our money in
stocking the products. Nor do we offer things we don't inventory, unlike
some folks who only operate on the 'net. Well, things at Okuma are changing
for the better!
Here's the deal, in July 2008 Tiburon Engineering
and Okuma reached an agreement in which Okuma would produce Tib's SST
reels, and Tiburon staff would design some saltwater worthy reels for
Okuma. This provided Okuma with the expertise they've needed and Tiburon
gained the benefit of Okuma's production resources. That's a serious
win-win for both firms. Further, Okuma invested money in hiring a great
team of guys who knew saltwater fishing. They upgraded their staff, and
showed they were changing focus in favor of actually building high
quality gear. Okuma has been a sleeping giant in sportfishing
tackle. Heck, most of the CNC machines used by the better reel
manufacturing firms are made by Okuma! They're huge, deep pockets, make
most overseas firms look insignificant in terms of company
capability and resources. With Tiburon's assistance, we're betting
Okuma's time has finally come (in the world of saltwater sportfishing).
We will only focus on the products we feel meet the needs of saltwater
anglers, and meet the performance requirements for this most demanding
sport.

Okuma's service department deserves mention,
because those guys did stand behind their older products. They did not
run away from problems, they took steps to solve them. Take this
philosophy, add to it improved designs, and we have the makings for a
new powerful player in the saltwater fishing marketplace. Okuma now
produces some reels
that we like enough to recommend to our clients, without reservation. Hard to believe, but
very true.

They aren't for everyone, but for those who appreciate the
enhancements and have the highest demands, they are reels to die for.
Okuma's Makaira Special Edition Long Range reels take things to
another level in
terms
of specific changes that some in the long range community have
requested. Before getting into that, let me state clearly, the
existing crop of Makaira reels are absolutely state of the art, and
for most of us, myself included, there is little reason to head in the
SE direction. The changes you'll see in the SE series reels appeal
most to fishermen who are uncompromising in terms of
their demands upon gear, guys who regularly head out to tangle with
cow size tuna on the long range boats or aboard a sportfisher off
Puerto Vallarta, those that will benefit most will be our most
dedicated long range
enthusiasts. Those that will benefit least will probably be private
boaters, guys who tend to put on heavy miles on their gear and don't
take the time to maintain 'em regularly. In a lot of ways the SE reels
are custom shop offerings, based upon feedback from some of the most
experienced anglers, guys who jumped on the Makairas early and fished
'em hard on the long range boats in 2010/11. To those, Okuma listened
and responded, showing their sincere interest in building the best
gear possible. The pricing of the SE series reels is a tad higher than
the original Makaira reels, reflecting the change in handle and
bearings used on these pieces. If you are seeking the best freespool
performance, flylining live bait to large grade tuna, this series of
reels will put a smile on your face and very likely result in a
personal best on the boat.

now for what's different on the Special Edition reels, the SE Series
reels feature: - Open Spool Bearings with TSI-301 oil. This increases freespool 2
to 2 1/2 times!

I first saw this new series of reels at the July
2009 ICAST show. I was
flat out impressed. Without doubt, this is a game changer for the
sportfishing industry. Okuma listened, listened well, and applied
what they heard in creating what may very well be some of the best
built reels on the market today. The reels are robust, solid,
creatively engineered, and made to go the distance.
All the new reels feature a carbon DFD (dual force drag) system for
exceptional drag performance, high drag capacity, long term
reliability and maximum alignment and durability. The Makaira reels
offer a "Pull Bar Drag System" with the advantage that the drag is
being pulled rather than pushed, which places heavy pressure on the
left side plate and utilizes the frame for overall stability -
that's the flaw of design in all reels built today, and Okuma feels
they've beat the system. With the Pull Bar design, there's no
pressure to create frame flex, or reduced drag pressure as a result
of tolerance alignment issues. As a result of the design, the open
top models in this line have none of the flex issues common with
other reels; no need to compensate for the disadvantage of design by
increasing mass, for instance.
The highly efficient drag system was designed and engineered by
Tiburon Engineering to increase maximum drag pressure, reduce side
load pressure on ball bearings and improve heat dissipation for
long term smoothness over extended fights. The Okuma DFD is
considered a wet drag system comprised of two carbon fiber drag
washers that are sandwiched together and bonded with a fiber glass
core. Pure carbon washers are coated with a thin layer of Cal
Sheet's Universal drag grease for virtually zero start up inertia.
These washers are compressed by two precision ground 17-4 grade
stainless steel drag plates that have been ground flat, then polished
for maximum smoothness. The stainless steel friction drag plates
have a minimum 32 Rockwell hardness allowing for high-end drag
settings and consistently smooth drag performance at all ranges!

Other important points of design: Silent anti-reverse, 16 point double dog anti-reverse for the
most reliable, smoothest and strongest anti-reverse on the market.
These reels so not depend on a one way bearing for their
anti-reverse, yet they have a similar slick feel to them. Robust! Helical Cut Gears, offers improved gear meshing, and gear
smoothness. They feel like butter being sliced when you change
gears. They're both smoother and stronger as a result of their
design.

This is a shot over the bow to every manufacturer of
saltwater reels. Okuma got it right, and they've got reason to be proud.
In July 2013 we'll be delivering the new 16
size, much anticipated and desired. Typically we do not offer items that
are not already in stock, however given the demand for the new reels and
certainty of delivery we now make them available for pre-order.
Andros 5II & 5NII
The
small Andros two speed offers a compact design similar in size to an Avet
MXL (a tad narrower and smaller). This is another powerhouse of a reel, robust, high
drag capability, smooth shifting leverdrag. The Andros is made for
fishing 15-40# line, and doing so very well. For 2013 Okuma introduced
the 5N, a narrower version of this excellent reel.
I
purchased a 5 in 2011 and have fished it now for enough
time to give you an honest opinion about it's
capabilities - It's one of my favorite reels to fish.
I've used it at 30-40# line, and given it's drag I've
pushed it more than I probably should. When over pushed
in terms of drag things do tighten up, but understand
that's greater than 15#'s on the drag scale. At
10-15 lbs of drag, this reel is smooth as
silk.
The thing that gets me is just how capable the drag is,
that's where I caught myself fishing way heavy on the
little piece. Probably 30# is where she most belongs,
but understand that the reel will indeed fish like a
powerful 40# 2 speed and with it's light weight and
great casting ability (that magnetic casting control
works beautifully) you will find yourself breaking it
out in most any situation where the casting ability and
light weight are advantageous. I don't plop down $400
every day for a reel, this is one purchase I have no
regrets over and I've fished the piece enough to know I
spent my money well. It is a little powerhouse, and
because of it's casting ability and drags you'll find
yourself using it a lot. Very enjoyable reel to fish
folks.

The New single speed models
cover the same performance levels, with only the higher gear - no
low gear option. They also do away with the cast control feature.
The single speeds have a blue spool and minor cosmetic differences,
but basically they are the same reel less the push button low gear
and mag cast dial. Casting performance, corrosion resistance matches
up 100% in use.
Spooling Suggestions: Lots of ways to put
this reel to use, my favorite for fishing bait is to run a short
leader or simply a 25 yard spool of Seaguar Premier into hollow braid,
knotless style (20-40# would be the range I'd fish the reels - with
30-40 my own preference). For the 5II I'd suggest going with the 50#
and for the 5NII run the 40# 16 Strand Toro Tamer Spliceable Hollow
Core Super Braid. Going that route you'll have over 400 yards
available of braid to keep your topper company. You can certainly go
with "solid" and a knot, straight braid or straight mono... But, if
you run the hollow with the in-line rigging you really have one
stealthy rig that will cast beautifully and you will catch more fish,
at least that's my feeling...and I own one.

Dual Force Drag Single Speed Reels
Here's another one of Okuma's new
reels, first shown at ICAST in 2009.
The new Cedros is a high speed 6.2:1 lever drag. It's robust
in design, very, very strongly put together and like the
Makaira and Cedros two speeds, incorporates all the hard
lessons and benefits of listening to the right folks from a
design standpoint. It's made from 6061-T6 Machined aluminum
frame with forged side plates. The new reels have a 17-4
grade precision helical cut stainless steel gears. All reels
in this series feature single speed, high speed gearing
systems. The spool is Type III hard anodized for maximum
corrosion resistance (a good thing when running Spectra, and
leaving it on for years). It also has features Okumas CRC -
corrosion resistant coating process. The reels uses their
Carbonite Dual Force drag system and Cal's universal drag
grease (with 27-37#'s of drag measured at strike WITH
FREESPOOL performance and a
max of 34-55#'s). The Cedros
also uses a custom designed thrust bearing (like the
Makaira) to alleviate side load on heavy drag settings.
You've also got 4 ABEC 5 Sapporo stainless steel rubber
sealed ball bearings to maker her spin! There's a double dog
proprietary silent anti-reverse system (not a one way
bearing), with a ratcheting drag lever and drag cam for
precise drag settings.
For jigging and live baiting you'll
appreciate the ergonomic grip handle
knob.
There's also a
heavy duty stainless steel ratcheting clicker system on the CLD 20. The CLD 10 and 15 use a low profile clicker system
with stainless wishbone design. For long lived performance
under load the reels also feature heavy duty precision
stainless steel drive and spool shafts. They all share a
type II blue anodized frame, sideplates, drag lever and
handle providing a long lived good looking appearance, in
the face of the harsh reality of saltwater use. All models
have lugs or plugs, so you can use 'em with a harness or
rail strap, or keep 'em smooth on top. There are special
screw ports around the sidep plate, like the Makaira reels,
to reduce water/corrosion buildup. The Cedros reels are very
well built, and Okuma backs that up with a FIVE year
warranty.

Opinion: Very strong reel.
It's not a two speed, but a two speed may not always be
appropriate or necessary. The reel is no light weight champ,
it's built strongly and ruggedly. For a person doing some
deep water work, jigging, baiting big fish, this series of
reels will prove very welcome. For the kingfish guys, these
reels will be great pieces to work with, same for wahoo
fishing and for bottom fishing, they'll be great. I don't
know of another high speed leverdrag reel that can pull this
sort of drag, and do so as smoothly and aggressively. I
never thought I'd be saying such good things about Okuma,
but they turned me around with the Cavalla two speeds and
the Makaira reels. They are listening to the right folks.
They've always had the spinners down, but now, their
conventional reels stand strong. They are not trying to be
the cheapest product on the market, they're trying to be the
best. This piece fills a very important niche in the
saltwater market that's not been addressed by other
manufacturers. It won't be for everyone, but for some the
Cedros leverdrags will be most welcomed indeed.

This is a reel we first saw two years
ago, and ordered then and there. But, the folks at Okuma had
their hands full with the lever drag versions of the Cedros
line and the Makaira series. Their star drag offering was
put on hold. But, both we and many of our clients wanted to
get their hands on a star drag version of the Cedros - there
was good reason for this product to come on the market.
While a lever drag has many benefits, in some situations a
great star drag reel has it's reasons for ownership, too.
One of the big ones is bottom fishing. Some folks need to
button down the drag and winch out a larger grade fish. If
you do so with a lever drag you end up having "binding"
issues, too much side load on the bearing.

Here's
a reel we first previewed well over a year
ago, and have been waiting patiently ever
since... Much like the Cedros star and
lever drags, good things come when you
wait 'em out. The new Cortez is an
innovative reel, made with good materials,
offering very good performance at a value
conscious price. Much like Daiwa's Sealine
(check Special #2) it's going to prove
itself a workhorse reel, a great reel for
someone new to saltwater fishing. It's a
very good balance of features, performance
and value. The Cortez utilizes a corrosion
resistant graphite frame and sideplates,
with a machined aluminum anodized spool.
The reel features a multi-disc Carbonite
drag system, for very good stopping power.
The star is made from strong forged steel,
and the handle is made from anodized
aluminum, and is swept inward in design to
reduce wobble while cranking, and there's
a soft grip handle that feels right in
your hand. You've got 5 bearings
to
help the reel spin well on a cast. The
Cortez has a dual anti reverse system,
with both mechanical and roller bearing
used in manufacture. The gears are
oversized, so you've got some good
cranking power despite the high gear ratio
(that will help you get bit) of 6.2:1. The
gears are self lubricating and the Cortez
series reels offer a 1 year manufacturers
warranty. Not a bad combination of
features, and the price isn't half bad
either at $129! Oh, did I mention, the
reel has MAGNETIC CAST CONTROL, TOO!!!

of specific changes that some in the long range community have
requested. Before getting into that, let me state clearly, the
existing crop of Makaira reels are absolutely state of the art, and
for most of us, myself included, there is little reason to head in the
SE direction. The changes you'll see in the SE series reels appeal
most to fishermen who are uncompromising in terms of
their demands upon gear, guys who regularly head out to tangle with
cow size tuna on the long range boats or aboard a sportfisher off
Puerto Vallarta, those that will benefit most will be our most
dedicated long range
enthusiasts. Those that will benefit least will probably be private
boaters, guys who tend to put on heavy miles on their gear and don't
take the time to maintain 'em regularly. In a lot of ways the SE reels
are custom shop offerings, based upon feedback from some of the most
experienced anglers, guys who jumped on the Makairas early and fished
'em hard on the long range boats in 2010/11. To those, Okuma listened
and responded, showing their sincere interest in building the best
gear possible. The pricing of the SE series reels is a tad higher than
the original Makaira reels, reflecting the change in handle and
bearings used on these pieces. If you are seeking the best freespool
performance, flylining live bait to large grade tuna, this series of
reels will put a smile on your face and very likely result in a
personal best on the boat.
