Finally the MXL size Raptors are available, even in Candy
Apple RED!
Raptors are a more refined, and higher drag
capacity series of reels from Avet. These take their whole
game up one notch, providing truly big fish capable reels in
compact sizes. Their machining is better, their operation
better, and their drag capacity much greater than their size
would suggest. There is less side load on the bearings as a
result of increased drag capacity. Casting is flawless, and
all models with the exception of the HX Wide Raptor come
with Avet's super performing Magnetic Cast control. They are
the best this innovative manufacturer produces, and they are
made to outperform all other reels on the market.

There is some question whether or not the MXJ Raptor
will be produced. Given the increased line capacity of
the SX Raptor, it is likely that the MXL will be the
only piece produced in that series. This is open for
discussion, but that's the latest from the Avet folks.

HXW (wide) Raptor. The "w" model
does not have cast control, also note the larger 30 size handle.
 The
Avet 30 Narrow and Wide represents an upgrade of the
very popular and much respected EX 4/0. The new 30 offers several enhancements which are based
upon the Pro 50. There are some small differences, some operational
changes, and some significant improvements. Let's go over what has
changed first. The new model uses a more traditional (and loud)
clicker. It does not self-disengage. The new model's lever requires
you to push a button before you can ease it into the full position
from strike. The weight is just a tad bid lighter than the older
model. The most significant improvement advances a very impressive
drag performance. The new model will provide OVER 35#'s of drag while
maintaining very impressive freespool performance (the older model
does 20#'s at strike w/freespool). That's right 35#'s of drag! It will
button down at full to 40#'s! This is one serious reel, for serious
fishermen. It's a more refined piece, both in terms of feel and
finish. Like all Avet reels, this leverdrag will spin, without
expensive after-market enhancement. The reel features six shielded
bearings. Maintenance is easy, reliability is superior, quality of
manufacture very high in terms of the machining and ultimate
performance.
Given the strength and
drag capability, we've had some folks opt to run these as heavy 80#
rail pieces instead of 60# trollers. Certainly they'll excel at any
application that makes maximum use of their freespool and braking
power.

Avet 50
Series Two Speed Reels
 These
new reels from Avet were long awaited, and they creating quite a
stir upon their introduction during the huge cow yellowfin bite a few
years ago. They're the most powerful and useful reels you're
likely to encounter if you target larger gamefish. They do some things no other reel will match, and
they do it without being sent off for enhancement. They are
designed for what we want to do, right out of the box! They all
spin very, very well. They all offer six bearings, very strong
drag performance, and they're all finally available! We now have a good
selection of the new 50 wide and narrow and the topless 50 narrow - the
San Diego Special.
Avet
first introduced these new two speed reels at the Fred Hall Long Beach
show. The BIG DOG is capable of pulling 50# of drag at strike,
with a full 57# at your disposal! Amazing. The new reels are
available in three colors, silver, blue and gold. Six bearings, machined
aluminum, made in America, these guys are on a roll!
 The 50 is a whole new game in this
size gear. It turns more drag than you need, certainly. That
means it has headroom, you're not fishing at the max. There's no
fade, no problems. The 50W and 50N are strong reels, and like the
other reels from Avet, they're well under priced for what they offer.
There's no better or more fishable 50 size reel on the market in my
humble opinion.
In the fall of 2005 the long
range fleet operating from San Diego found a huge school of biting
yellowfin. This bite was epoch, with literally hundreds of fish over
200 pounds taken, and lots of fish over 300#! Check our Charter
section to see some pictures from our own Red Rooster Charter for
some proof. On our charter we had fishermen from all over the
country, many of whom purchased reels from us, and many of those
were Avet 50's. The only product to have performed without a
hitch were the Avet 50's. We're talking multiple fish over 200#. The
big Penns and other reels of the gold variety
caught fish and did well, but the freespool performance of the Avet
helped the bait to swim, get noticed, and get bit. All the gear is good
these days, but some is "gooder" than others. The Avet 50 is the kind.
(*Regarding Tiburon, I
took one big tuna on my 30, but after the trip discovered that they had
done an upgrade on the drag to handle 100# plus line. The 30 was
intended as an 80# rig, I was fishing 135/150# on the reel and felt that
more power would have been desired. They addressed that point, very
well. Others with the modification did great with the 30 for multiple
big fish. Every 30 from Tib. that we stock has the upgrade.)

of this size. Extended line capacity verses a 50 wide is the most
noticeable difference in this LARGE reel. Going after big black marlin,

Avet has knocked
down the pricing of their best two reels, the
T-RX 50W and 50 standard (narrow). These are
100# capable stump pullers. They use two drags,
on either side of the spool (but are not in
conflict with Accurate's patent because of the
manner in which they apply pressure). They are
the only reel on the market than I am aware of
that allows you to change the pre-set while the
drag lever is engaged! These are Avet's best big
game reels, and now they are about 25% more
affordable. 50 Wide - now $749 not $999,
$649 for the standard size not $899.

Reel Storage
Avet
makes a nice pair of reel storage cases.
These are a "soft" case, with adjustable storage. They include
plenty of pockets to hold leader material, tools, reel
clamps.... They feature some nice embroidery work, mentioning
the manufacturer's name of course. The smaller case is about
14"x9"x8" with room for 6 reels up to a 30 size. The larger
case is 22"x14"x12" (which is photographed
below - small at right) has eight adjustable dividers capable of
holding up to 8 30's or 50's. These are a quality products, and
will hold your reels safely while traveling to and from a
boat, or for storage at home. They are not designed for air
travel and baggage check ins. For that, a hard case would be
preferred...with locks.
