High Quality SPECTRA!
Van Staal created the concept and emergence of high end spinning
reels near the turn of this century. They became the reel of
choice among discriminating surf anglers on the East Coast, and their
acceptance grew to a national and international level. Their one
problem was funding, and in the early 2000's that caught up with them.
The
firm was sold, to a much better funded outfit, one we've all grown up
with from the freshwater side of things, the present owners are the
folks from Zebco. Zebco further their move into quality saltwater gear
with the purchase of Fin-Nor not long after acquiring Van Staal. We've
followed them since, and in 2011 pulled the trigger and brought in the
line after seeing that Zebco truly is committed to building their
saltwater presence, and the quality of products they offer. (I should
note, we also represented ZeeBaaS reels, created by the founder of VS.
However, while they have shared similar strengths as the old Van Staal
product line, they suffered from a lack of funding (familiar tale) and
lacked the ability to grow their product line. Zebco has demonstrated
their ability to expand upon the lines they've purchased during the
2000's, and in 2011 improved upon their acquisitions product lines
significantly as you'll note below...
Van Staal is known for building excellent
spinning reels. First crafted for the the surf fishing community, they
have moved offshore with products that suit more recent innovations in
lines and applications (use of Spectra braided lines and vertical
jigging, tossing poppers, taming better grade tuna...). The entire
line of Van Staal reels, pliers and accessories are specially designed
to the extreme, so you know they can handle any situation, anywhere
you want to go, with No Limitations. For instance, even if you're not
in the habit of submerging your reel while fishing, regular exposure
to the elements is enough to compromise the integrity of most drag
systems and gears. That's why Van Staal engineers designed water
tight seals throughout the spool, body and handle assembly of VS, VSB
and C-Vex reels. This gives Van Staal angers an advantage no other
manufacturer can. The ability to fish anywhere, even underwater,
without worrying about the failure of your equipment. The beautifully
machined aluminum reels do more than look good, they are among the
toughest saltwater reels ever designed.
VS Spin and
VSB Spin
Van
Staals well known all machined aluminum
spinning reels are available with and
without bails. The bail-less design has been
favored within the surf fishing community,
while the bail design has more favor for the
offshore enthusiast. This a preferred manual
bail design, more appropriate for higher test
lines and higher drag settings, both of which
these reels are fully capable of employing to
great benefit.
The VS series of
bail-less spinning reels are the originals,
offering a completely sealed water-proof body
and drag. They are made for hard core surf
fishing. Both VS and VSB (bail) reels offer a
fully machined aluminum body, flyer and spool
for no-flex strength, plus a huge machined
stainless steel spiral-bevel main gear for
long lasting power. They feature a machined
titanium-nitride-treated center shaft and
titanium-nitride line roller allowing you to
fish either monofilament or braided lines
under the heaviest drag loads without wear.
For the VSB models, the bail is made from
solid nickel-titanium for superior strength
and durability. They use a massive
anti-reverse clutch, for rock solid hooksets.
With huge line capacities and the ability to
pick up 40 inches of line with a single turn
of the handle, there are few if any other
reels better built to deal with tough fish in
a tough environment. (Reels pictured are with

VM Spin
The
VM Series reel are new models from Van Staal,
at an amazing value. Never before has Van
Staal had a reel this affordable, packed with
so much performance. The new machined VM
150 offers both left or right hand retrieve
and holds 350 yards of 30# braid, and put out
up to 30 pounds of drag stopping power. The
fully machined aluminum and stainless steel
construction of the VM150 creates more than
enough strength to tackle big, exotic fish,
and the precision gears and smooth drag
performance make it the perfect go-to reel
from boat or from shore.
While the new VM 150
represents a bit of a change from the old Van
Staals, it's very likely this will be the wave
of the future, reels with wider appeal given
the flexibility of the reel. There's a
smoothness to the reel that's going to be more
familiar to folks used to the Japanese
spinning reels. She's still tight, still great
for surf use, but smoother in operation, and
having a bail has it's strengths as well. All
considered, the VM 150 opens up the benefits
of owning a Van Staal to more fishermen, and
that's a very good thing.
