Garmin GPSMAP 176 and 176C

garmin.jpg (68146 bytes)This is my newest favorite new gizmo.  Bought a few for the shop...kept the first one for me.  Trick! Useful!  Something to own!!!  First off, let me give you some warning, even with my prices, these puppies are not inexpensive.  But, I think they're absolutely fantastic and a must-have for a lot of private boaters.  They're a great addition to a gear bag for any fisherman who values knowing their location.

I've got a small 18' center console fishing boat.  I use my handheld GPS a lot, as a result I've always wished for a chartplotter so I could really see what I'm doing out there in relative terms.  Size has always been a problem. Not much room for much more than the fishfinder...but there's some space... Another issue preventing me from buying a chartplotter in the past was the expense, I had a hard time rationalizing a one use item like that.  Garmin made the rationalization easy with a dual use chartplotter. You'll find yourself taking the 176 with you in both your car and boat.  It travels well, but don't expect something quite so small as Garmin's eTrex, which is really a pocket product.  The 176 is best accomodated on a bracket or mount.  It's not tiny, but it's small and functionally sized with a 3.8" screen.

garmin176b.jpg (27045 bytes)The Garmin GPS MAP 176 series is a state of the art WAAS GPS receiver with chartplotting functions. With WAAS technology the GPS is extremely accurate, down to 3 meters!  The LCD display provides 320 x 240 resolution for razor sharp viewing.  You have two display options with the product, either the 176C color or 176 gray scale (12 level grayscale, 16 color transflective display). Both products use 4 AA batteries, good for up to 18 hours use depending upon backlight setting.

The 176 comes with a built-in worldwide general coverage basemap, detailed Americas basemap with cities, highways, interstates, rivers, lakes and tide data for the US. The GPSMap comes with a great bracket, serial cable, power cable (dc), and instruction manual. Here's the best part, the GPSMAP accepts Garmin's optional Bluechart offshore marine cartography.  For use in a car you can also upload information from Garmin's Mapsource or Metroguide CD's (using a datacard). I bought (and of course sell) the Garmin BlueChart MUS021R California - Mexico chart.  This is a broad area map, from Point Arena down to Puerto Vallarta, covering everything in between and out for a few hundred miles, with nautical navaids, port details, depth contours, spot soundings....   Add your own waypoints and fishing holes and you'll be in business.  We can supply maps to almost all waters (U.S., Europe, Australia and New Zealand) and the accessories you might also require.

Garmin produces a wide range of GPS navigation tools which are well worth space at the helm.   They also make a wide range of handheld GPS navigators and fishfinders.  I've only listed a fraction of their total offerings.   If you're looking for something not posted, please send back an email.

Garmin recently came out with a new compact handheld GPS, the eTrex.  I waited a bit to offer the product, always taking a pretty conservative route.  I've been convinced there are a lot of reasons to consider the new eTrex.  It's size makes it a great backup, safety kit or tackle box essential.  It also can be easily used, by almost anyone, ANYWHERE.  It's a trick little piece.

etrexHand.jpg (2783 bytes)Truly a small wonder, the Garmin eTrex™ takes the best features of a 12 parallel channel GPS receiver and put them into a six ounce package that is only four inches high and two inches wide. The result is a unit that will literally fit in the palm of your hand.

Besides its small size, mariners and outdoorsmen will likely notice the sleek design of the eTrex. All buttons are located on either side of the unit, allowing for simple, one-handed operation that won't obstruct your view of the display. In fact, the eTrexetrexPIC.jpg (5310 bytes) features only five operator buttons for the ultimate in user-friendly design. Thanks to its bright yellow case, the eTrex will be hard to misplace and easy to find in any boat or backpack. The eTrex is completely waterproof so it can take an accidental splash or dunk in the water and still continue to perform.

Inside the eTrex, you will find the proven performance of a 12 parallel channel GPS receiver that will run for 18 hours on just two AA batteries. No need to worry about dense tree canopy with this unit, the eTrex will continue to maintain a tight satellite lock even while operating in forest-like conditions. The eTrex will store up to 500 user waypoints with graphic icons and boasts GARMIN's exclusive TracBack™ feature that will reverse your track log and help you navigate your way back home. In addition, the eTrex uses animated graphics that will help you identify your marked waypoints quickly and easily.
