You know, I've learned some things over the years. Reagan had it right, "Trust but verify." And, that's what I like to do with manufacturer claims and specs. That was why we de-emphasized BlackWater's Fluorocarbon leader some time back. The hype didn't match the actual performance. Good product, but way over hyped and frankly their claims of stretch didn't match reality. So, I revisited fluorocarbon line testing and checked on YoZuri, Seaguar, Momoi, Hi Seas Quattro and Sunline's product in August of 2015 using only 50# lines as a reference. In the case of Momoi and Hi Seas, the product has improved significantly based upon testing of diameter, breaking strength and stretch. Sunline makes a similar claim regarding stretch as BlackWater did, suggesting benefit to running their lines as a shock-leader. I verified that point, it had excellent strength and stretch with good diameters. From what I saw, Sunline offered the greatest stretch of any of the lines tested. The finish is hard, meaning abrasion resistance will prove excellent, knot strength benefits for those who run straight braid to FL line.

It's easy for a manufacturer to play games with diameters in order to gain added line test, so those specs hold some good merit, but even then all lines are not created equally. Lines with high stretch numbers should usually also have lower breaking strength - intuitive logic on that one. That's not always the case as testing indicated. One would expect that as line stretches it gets thinner, as it gets thinner it breaks under less of a load than if it were to snap all at once without stretch. The key factors as I see 'em are Diameter, Breaking Strength and Stretch. For different applications the order of those qualities may change to reflect your own fishing application. Running a shorter topshot, a case can be made to run line that offers more stretch. Going for a cow, breaking strength may be key. There are other qualities which I'd like to be able to test out, wet strength (does the line change after being in the water for half an hour or more?), abrasion resistance & knot strength. With what I have to work with, those are things I can't confirm.

For testing, we have a $3500 machine at our HB shop, would like to buy the 10K version, but the wife's new kitchen gets budgeted first before that's going to happen. Nonetheless, our machine does a very good job testing mono and FL lines with accuracy. There are still some variables in our testing which I can't control, it's a manual crank machine. But, with several tests, averaging results, we can arrive at some conclusions. From what I saw, testing for breaking strength, diameter and stretch at breaking point the findings I arrived at showed significant improvement in FL lines from several manufacturers when compared to the results obtained a few years back when I was trying to confirm Blackwater's stretch claim. I think that's significant,  all of the top companies products tested out quite well, better lines than just a few years back.

MANUFACTURER DIAMETER BREAKING STRENGTH
Using 50# line as reference
STRETCH
SUNLINE #2 Good numbers, confirm MNFG specs #5 Consistent results within 10% of claim 45-46# #1 Excellent, the best tested
5-7"
Hi Seas Quattro #4 Not bad, but not leading in diameter specs #1 Highest tested values 48-53# - This was higher than testing done a few years ago. #2 Very good results, 2nd best tested 5.6-5.75"
Seaguar Blue Label #2 Good numbers, confirm MNFG specs #2 Second highest tested value 48# #3 Good consistent results - surprising
5.5-5"
Seaguar Premier #1 Good numbers, thinnest specs #6 Good strength ~ average 43-46# #4 Very consistent results
5"
YoZuri Pink #4 Same as Hi Seas, a tad thicker #3 Good strength ~ average 46# #6 Lowest stretch by my testing
3.5-4.25"
Momoi #3 Good numbers, confirm MNFG specs #4 Good strength ~ average to high, tested 44-52# #5 Solid results
4.5-5.5"

Using the machine we have, I can not control all variables in testing. So, we run multiple tests on each line. As a result of the test equipment, do not take our numbers as gospel, a better machine would probably increase the break strength numbers for all manufacturers. In summary, the lines are better than they have ever been. Significant improvement over a few years ago were seen. The above tests were made using 50# line, taken off the shelves at our HB shop 8/24/2015. Everyone has personal favorite lines, based upon experience, advertising and personal taste. I get asked about what I use, in all honesty I fish more of the Quattro than anything else. I also fish Seaguar's line and have used YoZuri's. I have not fished Momoi's line yet, and should. It really strikes me as an improved product. I will be fishing the Sunline FL on our charters in the fall of 2015 for some of my braid to FL setups given the stretch factor. I have fished Quattro more than any other line at 60# and down. At 80# and greater, typically I have fished Seaguar's Blue Label. That's the range where I want to start running the Sunline going forward. Given that I tend to use a lot of FL line, cost for me is a factor, Sunline, Quattro and Momoi all offer greater value than Seaguar. So, that's a big influencer to me, and I like the tinting process used by the Quattro and the hard finish and good stretch of the Sunline. -Mark

  • Hi Seas Quattro 100% Fluorocarbon Leader

Here's a product we think you'll find quite interesting. Hi Seas introduced a Fluorocarbon leader at the 2009 ICAST show in Orlando. Since that time I've been using it as my primary leader material, and we've even included it in some of our long range charter gift bags so that other folks can become introduced to it's benefits.  It's a unique product, unlike anything we've worked with before in Fluorocarbon form. While there have been some colored fluorocarbon leaders that gained some following such as Yo-Zuri's pink leader, our opinion was always that tinting an otherwise invisible line didn't make sense - from an intuitive logic standpoint, why color something that should be invisible in the first place? Well, there's one reason I didn't consider... Your line acts as a transmission cable for light. In strong sunlight the line will conduct that energy and become visible. Hi Seas got around that issue by adding some tint to diffuse the light. But, they went a step further, actually several steps further. This line transitions into FOUR TINTS, breaking up the light transmission and making the line even more invisible to fish. It has a faster sink rate than mono based upon a standard fluorocarbon property relating to it's specific gravity. The material is less visible, and with a transitioning tint it will be less visible under all light conditions. Interesting product, and something we think you'll want to try. I've now been using this leader for over a year, and I have been impressed with it's performance. It's produced tuna for me when other guys didn't get bit. It's especially beneficial in strong sunlight conditions. We've tested the product both from a line test standpoint, diameter to test, and from a "bite" perspective. By all counts this is excellent stuff.

In addition to the benefits mentioned above, the Hi Seas Quatro price is far more attractive than some of the better known products that are on the market now.  The price advantage is a major consideration, or at least should be given how much fluorocarbon we typically run these days. I tend to run straight braid, then connected to Fluorocarbon leader on many of my own rigs. I'll use an entire spool of the FL line on top of my braid. That's a great way to put the odds in your favor in terms of getting bit, especially when fishing bait. This is my go-to line of choice, price is one consideration, but if it didn't get bit then who cares about price. Well, the stuff does indeed get bit quite well indeed.

COATESVILLE, PA (June 1, 2009) HI-SEAS introduces new 100% Fluorocarbon, with exclusive Quattro 4-color camouflage technology. There are two ways to reduce fishing line’s visibility underwater. The earliest method was developed by HI-SEAS and remains in use today in their extremely popular nylon monofilament lines Quattro Plus™ and Black Widow™. This ground breaking achievement works the same way a hunter’s camouflage clothing does, by breaking up visual patterns so it blends into the background. It’s a simple principle, but it took HI-SEAS to apply it to the science of fishing line.

The second method for making line less visible to the fish’s eye came about when line was extruded from polyvinylidene fluoride, a material that has a light refraction index similar to that of water. Most early fluorocarbon lines were manufactured from material so stiff and unruly that they were relegated to being used for leader material. The stuff just didn’t cast well and was far too stiff, but bass fishermen discovered that in addition to being less visible to fish, unlike nylon monofilament which tends to float and absorb water, fluorocarbon sank. That was a beneficial property for line when fishing jigs, worms and all kinds of finesse baits. Even in lighter tests, the stuff just didn’t perform well as a running line. That is, until HI-SEAS 100% Fluorocarbon was introduced.

With the introduction of HI-SEAS 100% Fluorocarbon Line three years ago, the company set a new standard for fluorocarbon performance. In one giant leap, HI-SEAS had overcome the problems inherent with other fluorocarbon lines like stiffness, poor knot strength, poor abrasion resistance and less than stellar casting abilities. B.A.S.S. Pro’s like Cliff Pace, Jeff Kriet, Jeff Connella, Andre Moore and Kim Bain Moore all agree that HI-SEAS 100% Fluorocarbon quickly became the standard against which all others are judged. To date, no other fluorocarbon line has matched its superior performance characteristics.

“HI-SEAS has never been a company to rest on its past achievements,” said Mike Shields, VP of Sales and Marketing, “so we’re raising the bar again with the introduction of a revolutionary new line, Quattro Fluorocarbon. By applying our proprietary Quattro coloring process, we’ve added a new level of invisibility to our 100% Fluorocarbon line and leader products. Alternating lengths of scientifically selected colors mask the last remnants of the line’s visual footprint. This product represents the latest in underwater camouflage technology, and it’s available now!”

“As much as I love the original HI-SEAS 100% Fluorocarbon, this new Quattro Fluorocarbon is even smoother and casts further with less effort than their original,” said Cliff Pace. According to on-the-water tests performed by Cliff and other members of the HI-SEAS Pro Staff, they agreed that Quattro Fluorocarbon is the best handling fluorocarbon line yet, while retaining a high degree of abrasion resistance and superior knot strength. Since it disappears so well underwater, our pros were able to increase the line rating they use without sacrificing stealth or fishability.

We've stocked Izor's leader material since I started CharkBait a dozen years ago (as of this writing). It's a much different product than their highly regarded mono. While their first string mono is relatively stiff (which aids its abrasion resistance) their leader material is very pliant, has the least memory of the lines I've used, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. They produce both a clear and blue leader, in 50 yard coils.  This is the best value in leader material available. When FL lines were first introduced Izor's FL lines were quite popular. But, now we have more suppliers and less call for Izor's product. It's a darn good line, but they are not the primary producer and other firms are more competitive. Note, Izor's FL line is sold by the foot rather than yard.

  • Yo-Zuri H.D. Carbon

The folks at Yo-Zuri recently introduced a line of improved fluorocarbon leader. This product is 100% fluorocarbon, and super soft unlike most other fluorocarbon leader products. Yo-Zuri used to handle the U.S.A. distribution of Seaguar, so they've been involved with this type of product from day one. For them to come out with their own line they knew they had to improve upon what has been available, and they've accomplished that goal. We've used this product now for several  season's time and can agree with the manufacturer's claims of softness and lack of memory. It gets high marks for abrasion resistance, low stretch, value, and underwater invisibility.

SUNLINE FLUOROCARBON
(Give these guys a try before buying any more Seaguar...)

NEW 30M Spools in stock, 33 yards, in addition to the 100M 110yd size spools.

Sunline is an interesting addition to our product mix. Background, Sunline has produced lines for several well known brands offered here in America as well as Europe and Oceana for many years. As a company, they are actually very large, the largest line only manufacturer in the world! Pretty funny that no one knows 'em except those in the business, but we've all probably fished their line. Their lines are made in Japan, to very high standards. They produce mono, Fluorocarbon (14 different types!), braided lines - nothing but line and pretty much anything considered fishing line. Their FL lines have gained some significant success, and they are reaching out to the saltwater community next. Under their own brand name they've been moving forward quite well in the bass community, with many top performing angers using their FL lines and other products as well, Aaron Marten won at Havasu fishing their line, 1st, 2nd and 4th place angers on the B.A.S.S. tournament trail are fishing their FL lines, etc. Some of the top names in pro bass fishing use their lines exclusively, and that says something. I met these folks at ICAST in 2015 and was given a sample of the line for evaluation. Specifically their System Leader - Tournament Shock Leader. Very thin diameters, good stretch characteristics, high abrasion resistance are the characteristics that stand out. It's not a limp line (which would reduce abrasion resistance) but still has a predictable stretch factor. The line is made with 100% FL resins, it's a true Japanese quality product, strong in the Japanese market and making an entry to the USA. The line is excellent, and if you do the math you'll note that you are getting four times the amount of line for double the price of, well, Seaguar. Four times the line for double the price, excellent quality, why buy Seaguar???

As mentioned, they produce 14 different types of Fluorocarbon leader! The System Leader is a unique blend, designed to offer fishermen specific features:

  • ●The evolution of a new concept: 100% fluorocarbon leader. Non-stress spooling to avoid crushing or flattening of the line. Comes in 30m/100m spools ideal for offshore trips.

  • ●Balanced design is line weight specific: emphasis on suppleness and minimum interference on lure movement to light game lines, and a focus on hardness and the ruggedness to withstand abrasion and strong, sharp teeth to the limit for big game lines.

  • ●TRP (Triple Resin Processing) to outstanding abrasion resistance against rocks, debris, weeds, and the fish’s body.

  • ●Knot strength has been boosted for lightweight lines designed for light game, since these lines are often tied in uni knots or blood knots. Now you can use a much thinner leader than was previously possible – be prepared to get more hardness and tenacity so the line would not be cut by PE lines or the eye of your lure.

  • ●Super PE Shift! Designed with enhanced surface hardness for strengthening knots made with super PE lines like PE Jigger 8 HG and Deep One. No more problems with your braid cutting into your leader.

For anglers running straight Fluorocarbon leader on top of braid, this line was developed for just that purpose. That is it's intent, though it certainly can be used in shorter lengths. Most will run 25 feet to 50 yards as a topper above the braid. Spool size is 100 meters, 110 yards - NOT FEET! Do the math, it's priced quite well, enough so that it should embarrass one well known supplier quite clearly. My gosh, 110 yards of this excellent product runs less than 50 yards of the other firms FL line! You can understand why we brought in the line, it's a good product and very good value.
(Frankly, I'm fishing Sunline and Hi Seas Quatro as my go-to fluorocarbon lines exclusively these days. Seaguar has competition, and in my opinion they've not kept up with completion, they've been playing marketing games instead. For Seaguar, it's kind of like the potato chip business in supermarkets, come out with so many lines, taking up so much shelf space that there's no room for competing products...and then no reason to have a better mouse trap. Sunline and Quatro are both better mousetraps, that's my take of FL lines these days - Mark)

Love the tweener tests! Sunline is now available in 35, 45 and 55 lb tests. Why is that so wonderful? Easy, it's a diameter benefit for anglers, lower diameter equals less resistance for a bait to swim, less visibility means your predatory gamefish has less reason to shy away.

We have heard from some folks that wanted to try this excellent line in a smaller spool, didn't want to commit to 110 yds on something new to them (or they didn't trust my endorsement 100%). So, we have accommodated you. The little spools are also easier to take along on a trip, and hold enough line to make up 3 wind-ons, etc. GREAT VALUE, EXCELLENT PRODUCT!

Seaguar Fluorocarbon leader material has made better fishermen out of a lot of average anglers.  They still farm fish, but they get more bites.  And, getting more bites results in more fish on the boat, even from dedicated farmers!

Let's put it this way, we just got back from a great four day charter aboard the Red Rooster III.  We hit Guadalupe Island for some productive yellowfin fishing, with fish averaging 50-80 pounds.  In that clean water it can be tough to get bit.  You can't fish light line, you'll get hammered.  So, the sharp guys were fishing 3-6' of fluorocarbon leader.  The typical setup was 40# mono, 40# fluorocarbon leader.  But, one guy, Paul, was a lot smarter than average.  He ended up tying up 60# fluorocarbon on his 30S which was loaded with 60# mono and 80# Spectra.  Paul was able to bring in fish in about 1/3 or less of the time of guys fishing lighter gear.  He got bit very well, landing double his fair share of fish.  Fluorocarbon works, we've been saying that for several years now.  But, on this trip, it's worth was never more evident.  Use fluorocarbon leader and get bit, don't and you won't. Test results confirm this products HIGH breaking strength and consistent performance.

6/1/16 - The above was written some years back. These days there are many other very good FL lines on the market. At the time of writing about Seaguar, the only LR alternative guys used was P-Line's FL lines. They did not keep up and look where they are now (pretty much gone as a FL supplier for LR applications). Seaguar's Blue Label still gets used, but we've seen others like HiSeas, Momoi, Sunline, Yo-Zuri...all make their own adjustments and improvements. Nice to have options, and there are good ones these days.

  • Seaguar Premier Fluorocarbon

The new Premier is the next generation of Fluorocarbon leader from Seaguar. The new leader is of course 100% fluorocarbon. It's thinner in diameter, and has lower memory. This product does indeed have a bit of stretch to it and can be used as a shock leader with a direct connection to Spectra. We did some testing, and have to say, the new Premier is a very good line in terms of thin diameter, consistent performance, and elongation or stretch. If you are running a short topshot over Spectra, this is a good line, and the test results confirm it, despite the hype surrounding it's introduction which was not accurate. The only downside to the Premier product is that this line is essentially an IGFA line - it will break under it's rated line test. Other FL lines will test higher, as does their Blue Label. This line is not recommended for Long Range cow fishing given it's low breaking strength - my humble opinion. One can achieve similar results using a line class lower Blue Label line, breaking strength will be similar and diameters too, in comparison to the Premier series. I would suggest that Seaguar is trying to market a number of FL lines - some first generation re-packaged and branded - such as their pink product.  Kind of like Doritos chips at the market, the manufacturer makes more flavors to limit shelf space at retail.  We do not stock Seaguar's lines which point to more marketing than saltwater fishing success. Seaguar makes a good FL product, but we do try to cut thru the smoke and mirrors and look at the product offered, test the product and then base a recommendation. Nice line, but a bit of over-reaching marketing hype by the manufacturer.

EXTREMELY SOFT, WITH LOW MEMORY
But, it will break under stated test...

Momoi Hi-Catch Leader
Nylon-Mono Leader

Momoi's Hi-Catch mono leader is a Japanese made product of superior quality, and the value is strong as well. The leader coils are 100 yards in length, available in both clear and light blue tint. The coils come in a handy zippered mesh pouch for organized storage, and the bags make darn useful things after the leader is gone, too. I'd describe this as a fairly stiff leader material in comparison to Izor's which is a softer product. There's reason for both types of leader, and where concerns of abrasion of paramount importance this product would be my first choice. However if you are looking for a relatively limp leader, then the Izor leads. Strictly a matter of application and personal preference.

Momoi Fluorocarbon Leader
New Heavier Tests Available Now

Well, we do our part in searching out new products, but we don't add things to the mix unless it makes sense to do so. Before bringing in Momoi's new fluorocarbon leader we did some testing. Based upon that testing, it was darn easy to pull the trigger with Momoi's new Presentation Fluorocarbon. It tested out GREAT! The line is pure fluorocarbon, available in both clear and pink and it's available in 100 yard spools - for about the same price as 2 25 yarders from other folks. In testing, we found that it did exactly what it was supposed to do. For example, the 40# tested out at a consistent 43 lbs. with minimal variance as we tested the spool through it's length. Further, there was some stretch offered as well. Let me put it this way, the stuff tested out better than Black Water's. The line reminded me a lot of Seaguar Blue Label in terms of test, offered some stretch - not quite as much as Seaguar's Premier but more than most other fluorocarbon I've tested. It's a very good product and excellent value.

The new 100-200# test Fluorocarbon is packaged in 100 foot coils rather than 100 yard size spools.

  • SPECTRA to FLUOROCARBON (or) MONOFILIMENT

For connecting mono or leader to Spectra we generally recommend a 30-40 turn Bimini and 30-40 wind Albright. However, some folks prefer a less bulky transition, especially for use with heavier mono above 100#'s. In this case there are two ways to go. One is to learn some new connection systems, such as the Sato crimp connection and use of specific needles for use with mono/fluorocarbon leader to hollow-core Spectra. Another great way to go are loop to loop connections, terminating your Braid with an appropriate bimini and use of a pre-made "wind-on" leader which represents mono or fluorocarbon connected to another material such as dacron, dynema or Spectra within which the mono is run, leaving a braided line terminating in a loop. Then it's an easy loop to loop connection that flow through your rod guides well, and allows quick and easy changing of lines.

We've been working with Spectra/Super Braid for a long time, catering to our long range fishing clientele. Hollow rigging, we've done our share, and we've also done our part in helping folks learn the craft with several videos posted on our YouTube channel, as well. Over the years folks have asked us to make wind-ons for them, and we've done so but never posted that as an option available from our on-line storefront. That's changed, we're now offering custom wind-on leaders to our clients. Frankly, we were at the forefront of introducing anglers to the benefits of the new Super Braided lines going back to the beginning of our business in 1997, and we've worked with braid longer than any other retailer and in greater volume.

The nice thing about growing over the years is that we have built a solid staff of professionals, guys and gals that have some excellent skills and love to fish. With that growth, we have in-house expertise in making custom leaders for the most demanding fishing situations in the world. And, you have more options in terms of the materials used for your wind-on leaders, with selections in Fluorocarbon: Seaguar Premier, Seaguar Blue Label, Momoi, Yo-Zuri, and Hi Seas Quatro. Wind-on lengths are a standard 25 feet with fluorocarbon or monofilament lines. We can also custom make other lengths of mono or fluorocarbon, but please note the delivery time may be a bit higher.

Uniquely, we offer wind-ons all the way down to 20# or lower test if required. After extensive testing we offer a few more options than most folks who make leaders, and you may wish to contact us regarding our techniques.  For lines of 60# and greater we'll use 16 strand hollow braid from Toro Tamer, in a dual wall construction that's both thin AND strong with appropriate served transitions from leader to braid. For leaders of 20 through 50 lb test we'll make use of multiple nail knots. We change our method for the lighter lines for good reasons, line twist and strength.  Connections are "served" or finished using 30 to 40 lb test 8 strand braid for the heavy lines and 20-30 lb 4 strand braid for the lighter tests. If you prefer a thinner single wall wind-on please let us know and we'll rig up your leaders in this manner. We can also color code your leaders either through use of colored serving thread or the hollow braid itself (this option will become available after June 2014). Our experience dictates a few things which we do differently than others who produce wind-ons, our materials are better, diameters typically thinner, and connections more reliable both in casting and while on a larger grade fish. And, we can color code your wind-ons for ease of selection of various tests as the example to the left presents.

Please note, these are not commercially made wind-ons, they are more expensive and I'll suggest better made, with more care and with better materials. They will not fail, and we guarantee that fact under reasonable use - for larger quality fish. We also sell the Momoi factory made wind-ons, and these are a better value in terms of price. But, if you want the best product made, it is our intent to build it for you as a custom product.

  • Momoi Wind-on Leaders

Over the years we've worked with several firms in terms of wind-on leaders, Izor being one of the first. They use a fairly bulky dacron for the line, which does grip the leader well, but also will degrade over time more than if they had used another material such as Spectra (which can be too slippery) or Dynema (which is similar to Spectra but provides a bit more grip). We came across another manufacturer's product we do like very much for this loop to loop style of connection - Momoi. These are very well made, and can boast some very good catches to date. Honestly, we do prefer these to home-made or purchased wind-ons given their quality, consistency and stealthy diameter. These wind-ons are available in twenty five foot lengths.
