We've
had several requests for devices to remove line
from reels, and for line maintenance. With
the advent of Spectra lines, innovated by
Izorline almost 10 years ago, some folks have
taken an interest in line "washing" to prolong
the service life of their Spectra as well as
prevent an accumulation of salts on the line and
reel spool. We've seen a vigorous debate
about the merits of line washing. My own
bias is against taking the time and trouble to
wash the line. If it costs me a spool 10
or more years from now, I can live with that
given the time it takes to unwind and wind up
the line. But, many anglers are giving
serious thought to taking the line off and
washing it, then putting it back on a reel.
Swifty makes THE device for this maintenance.
Their products are well engineered, well made,
and well thought out. They offer a wide range of
products for line winding and maintenance.
For easy line removal Swifty makes use
of a standard power drill. The
Swifty Line Remover was developed to
strip used fishing line from reels.
It was designed to be compact and
portable. All you will need to
do is supply a power source (drill
motor) and you can easily strip
monofilament from 2# test to 100#
test. It has the capacity to
strip 850 yards of 50# test in less
that 90 seconds. This is the
capacity of a Penn International 50SW.
It will also strip all of the smaller
reels down to micro spinning reels
with 2# test.
Insert
the spindle into a drill motor.
Attach both halves of the Swifty
with the wing nut & washers. (Only
if disassembled)
Place the drill motor into a secure
device.
Place fishing reel in free spool
(conventional) or open bail
(spinning reel).
Do not run line through rod guides.
Wrap line around the Swifty.
(DO NOT TIE)
Place drill motor in the “forward”
rotation.
Firmly hold the fishing reel while
depressing drill motor trigger.
Remove the used fishing line from
the fishing reel.
Just before the fishing reel is
empty, stop the drill motor.
Cut the remaining line off the
fishing reel.
You can continue emptying additional
reels until the Swifty is full.
Once full, split the 2 halves by
removing the wing nut.
Please recycle the used fishing line
by returning it to your local tackle
store.
This is the
device to use for washing your line.
There are two sizes available, one for
30 wide and smaller and one for 50
size and up through 80 wides. You use
this piece between the Swifty line
remover, along with their wider Tool
Kit.
Place the Insert between both halves
of the Swifty Line Remover.
Insert the SS spindle into the drill
motor. Attach the assembly to
the drill motor with the wing nut &
washers.
Place the drill motor into a secure
device.
Place fishing reel in free spool.
Do not run line through rod guides.
Tie the filament line to one of the
cross bars.
Place drill motor in the “forward”
rotation.
Extreme care
must be taken not to allow your
fingers to be exposed to the
spinning spools.
Firmly hold the fishing reel while
depressing drill motor trigger.
Remove the fishing line from the
fishing reel. Use care to
layer the line on the PowerWasher.
Do not allow the line to build up in
one location. Maintain steady
line tension to ensure a quick and
easy return of the cleaned line to
the reel.
Just
before the fishing reel is empty,
stop the drill motor.
Cut the remaining line off the
fishing reel.
Remove the Insert from the Line
Remover.
Wash and dry the filament line.
Return the Insert to the Line
Remover using the Blue shaft and
collar. Place a small amount
of tension on the collar to maintain
pressure on the insert.
Return the line to the reel using
care not to place any force on the
PowerWasher. Use some other
source of tension when replacing
your line.
You now have clean filament line
ready to catch that trophy fish.
For power washing your line you'll
need one of the Power Washer inserts
above, and the Power Washer Tool
Kit (pictured right) and the Swifty
line remover.

Swifty Nu-Skin Reel
Armor
Here's
another new Swifty product, Nu-Skin Reel Armor.
Tired of having your expensive, beautiful machined
aluminum anodized reel scratched and banged up?
Want to extend the good looks many more years?
Well, Nu-Skin will do that job and not detract
from the performance of the reel. It's a fairly
thick stick-on. You apply it to the side of the
reel and around the outside edge. It's
removable...when you want it off, and it sticks
well regardless of what a deckhand may do with a
hose and power wash. On the image of my Penn 50W
International on the right you can see the Nu-Skin
on the sideplate as well as surrounding the top of
the plate. That's the area protected by the
"skin." Click on the link below for sizing
information (use your right mouse button and open
as a new window so you aren't pulled from this
page).

Nu-Skin
Reel Armor was designed to preserve and maintain
the beauty of you aluminum bodied fishing reels.
Fishing reels are subject to abuse while being
transported. Often, rods and reels are stored in
close proximity and bump and or rub together
during this time. This damage is called “Boat
Rash”. We have designed a clear, flexible,
semi-permanent membrane to cover both the
non-handle side plate and the top of the frame.
These are the areas most susceptible to “Boat
Rash”. The Reel Armor stays in place and does not
impair the use of the reel during fishing. The
Reel Armor is removable for service. It will also
protect the reel when not in service. The product
is so clear that you will not even see it when
installed.

Rod Armor
For rod protection and for
a better grip Swifty has introduced their Rod
Armor
Kit. The system uses a popular X-Wrap tube which
fits over your existing grip, hypolon or cork
tape. Then with the use of any hair dryer the
tubing will shrink to fit the rod of your
choice. The Rod Armor with foam tape works great
for rod builders finishing a blank. You can also
use the foam version if you are trying to build
up the grip on your deckhand style rod. For all
other applications go with the mylar backing
tape.

Swifty
has been involved with spectra/mono rigging for
a few years, early with association with Sato. Kind of a natural given the Spectra
washer and the need by anglers not familiar with
tying Biminis and Albrights to re-connect their
lines. During that association Swifty
began producing a set of splicing needles that
have been popular given their pricing and fairly
broad application. With just two needles they
can handle about everything between 50# and
150#.

New Swifty Splicing Needle Kit
We also stock the Sato
kits.
From Gary Sato:
This project started over four years ago
when Dave Urodomo lent me his personal kit
to take on one of my first long range trips.
It was his spectra to mono connection kit.
Needless to say it was quite a revelation in
how easy and how well it worked, I had to
get one of my own. After much inquiry I
found that the major parts of the kit were
no longer available at any price. And at
that time the crimping sleeve system was
falling into disfavor because of failures of
one kind or another.
So my objective was to build my own set
of pliers that would accomplish the
following: Have exact tolerances to have
consistent results and be versatile for a
variety of sizes.
What
followed was the beginning of a long
journey, too long to go into here. But what
I finally ended up with was what some say is
as good as it gets. The pliers are cast from
hardened chrome steel. Machined 8 times for
the shapes and tolerances. Laser etched,
with dipped handles, and then personally
hand inspected for 13 different
measurements. The tolerances are held to
.005" for consistency. I designed the pliers
so that one could not over crimp the
sleeves, which would result in cracking &
failure of the connection. That is why the
tight tolerances are so important.
With the help and oversight of Stas
Velonkanis, I started manufacturing sleeves
that are matched to the pliers. The
tolerances are held to .005", so consistency
is assured. Each sleeve is individually
machined in a multi step process then
specially heat treated to prevent cracking.
The
system (pliers & crimps) was put on the
market in December of 2003. The first big
public test was the Taka's Charter on the
Royal Polaris of that winter. Since then it
has proved to be a viable option for making
mono to spectra connections. Since the roll
out, there have been no reported failures
when done properly.
By popular demand, the kit was developed.
The kit contains all the state of the art,
tricks, gadgets, illustrated instructions,
and products to make the connections easy
and quick. One could gather all the items
themselves but not without some time and
experience. The kit has everything one would
need to get right on the boat and fish.

Smitty
has been a long time producer of splicing needles and rigging gear. They
were the firm that supplied them to Burns prior to them ceasing
distribution. The kit
from Smitty is the best on the market, the most complete available and
useful for ALL sizes.
Another similar product offered by Jerry
Brown also includes a file for smoothing the
line. Essentially it's the same as the Smitty
(which is the same as the Burns except the newer
versions from Smityt and JB are a bit expanded).
Cost is about the same, quality too.
