Before getting into just how wonderful our custom wind-ons are, or
offering pre-made wind-ons from other suppliers, let me first say that
these are things you can indeed make yourself. It does take a bit of
time, there is a learning curve, but it's something you can do yourself.
Further, it's darn fun making your own wind-ons. We offer all the
products you'll need and we try to de-mystify the process with several
poorly made instructional videos which are posted on our YouTube Channel
(CharkBait USA) done by myself or one of the other guys working here.
Making your own wind-ons will require a bit of time and experimentation.
There's no single way to make 'em and we try to show a few methods. As
well you can give us a call and speak to Blake or myself (Mark) and
we'll help get you up to speed. Having said this, if you prefer
commercially or custom made wind-ons we can certainly assist...and
I'll offer our custom made wind-ons are state of the art with a couple
tricks we've learned along the way which are not part of the videos we
present (simply because it's not our job to provide other retailers all
of our proprietary tricks).
Key points, some inexperienced anglers may
forget, wind-ons are not made for repeated use on BIG tuna. Just like
any leader, one big fish and you'll have some stretch with the leader
material whether that's mono or Fluorocarbon. With stretch, line test
decreases and given some elongation the overall strength of a leader
weakens. So, it's best to change out your wind-ons just as you would
your leader. One big 200 lb plus fish and it's time to change out the
leader. They are not made to fish an entire season with multiple
catches. Wind-ons are no different than your topshot, change them after
a big fish. Secondly, custom wind-ons are made to order. Do not order 10
of 'em expecting to return what's not used. It does not work that way.
Just like hooks, reels, custom rods or iron, we're not supplying loaners
and we're not selling returned gear to other clients. Know what you want
to buy, plan on fishing it in the present or future. The quality is
guaranteed, but sales are final on custom products.
been working with Spectra/Super Braid for a long time,
catering to our
long range fishing clientele. Hollow rigging, we've done our
share, and we've also done our part in helping folks learn
the craft with several videos posted on our
YouTube channel, as well. Over the years folks have
asked us to make wind-ons for them, and we've done so but
never posted that as an option available from our on-line
storefront. That's changed, we're now offering custom
wind-on leaders to our clients. Frankly, we were at the
forefront of introducing
anglers to the benefits of
the new Super Braided lines
going back to the beginning
of our business in 1997, and
we've worked with braid
longer than any other
retailer and in greater
The nice thing about
growing over the years is that we have built a solid staff
of professionals, guys and gals that have some excellent
skills and love to fish. With that growth, we have in-house
expertise in making custom leaders for the most demanding
fishing situations in the world. And, you have more options
in terms of the materials used for your wind-on leaders,
with selections in Fluorocarbon: Seaguar Premier, Seaguar
Blue Label, Momoi, Yo-Zuri, and Hi Seas Quatro.
Wind-on lengths are a standard
25 feet with fluorocarbon or monofilament lines. We can also
custom make other lengths of mono or fluorocarbon, but
please note the delivery time may be a bit higher.
Uniquely, we offer
wind-ons all the way down to 20# or lower test if required.
After extensive testing
we offer a few more options than
most folks who make leaders, and you may wish to contact us
regarding our techniques.
begin with 12-14 feet of hollow core Super Braid, create a
loop and make use of two layers (Dual Wall construction) of
braid over the leader for a true 100% connection. We run the
leader 5 feet (rather than the standard 3 ft. inside the
For lines of 60# and greater
we'll use 16 strand hollow braid from Toro Tamer, in a dual
wall construction that's both thin AND strong with
appropriate served transitions from leader to braid. Our
serves are a tad longer than other producers of custom
wind-ons, that's a security factor. May not be as pretty as
a short 1 inch serve, but it holds securely under harsh
conditions - and we guarantee that fact. For
leaders of 20 through 50 lb test we'll make use of multiple
nail knots. We change our method for the lighter lines for
good reasons, line twist and strength. Connections are "served" or finished using
30 to 40 lb test 8 strand
braid for the heavy lines and
20-30 lb 4 strand braid for the lighter
If you prefer
a thinner single wall wind-on please let us know and we'll
rig up your leaders in this manner - typically we'll make
your wind-ons with a dual-wall - double thickness of braid
over the leader.
after the transition connection we'll apply a specific
adhesive and a final bonding coat. There are three levels of
security on our transition connections. We can also color code
your leaders either through use of colored serving thread or
the hollow braid itself. Our experience dictates a few things which
we do differently than others who produce wind-ons, our
materials are better, diameters typically thinner, and
connections more reliable both in casting and while on a
larger grade fish. And, as mentioned we can color code your wind-ons for
ease of selection of various tests as the example to the
left presents. Feel free to give us a call if you have
questions or need assistance in placing your order.
these are not commercially made wind-ons, they are more
expensive and I'll suggest better made, with more care and
with better materials. They will not fail, and we guarantee
that fact under reasonable use - for larger quality fish.
Our wind-ons are made by either Blake,
Brandon or myself
(Mark) - no one else.
We do not farm these out, nor
are these made
of our wives in the
wind-ons which are marketed over the 'net.
You know who builds ours, and there is
accountability. If you want the best product
made, it is our intent to build
it for you as a
custom product to your specs. Additionally,
we now have ToroTamer's 16 strand line in
colored form. So, now you can color code
your leaders, different color for different
test line. You've got choices: green, blue,
red, yellow, and white (with white being the
default color unless specified differently
on your order). Please allow up to
for making wind-ons.
MOMOI SPECTRA to
FLUOROCARBON (or) MONOFILAMENT
For connecting mono or leader to Spectra we
generally recommend a 30-40 turn Bimini and 30-40 wind Albright.
However, some folks prefer a less bulky transition, especially for
use with heavier mono above 100#'s. In this case there are two ways
to go. One is to learn some new connection systems, such as the Sato
crimp connection and use of specific
needles for use with mono/fluorocarbon leader to hollow-core
Spectra. Another great way to go are loop to loop connections,
terminating your Spectra with an appropriate bimini and use of a
pre-made "wind-on" leader which represents mono or fluorocarbon
connected to another material such as dacron, dynema or Spectra
within which the mono is run, leaving a braided line terminating in
a loop. Then it's an easy loop to loop connection that flow through
your rod guides well, and allows quick and easy changing of lines.
worked with several firms in terms of wind-on leaders, Izor being
one of the first. They use a fairly bulky dacron for the line, which
does grip the leader well, also will degrade over time more than if
they had used another material such as Spectra (which can be too
slippery) or Dynema (which is similar to Spectra but provides more
grip). We came across another manufacturer's product we do like very
much for this loop to loop style of connection - Momoi. These
wind-ons are available in twenty five foot lengths.
