Gamakatsu Red Octopus Hooks

There are a lot of folks who strongly believe in the value of red hooks.  For instance, a buddy came by the shop today, went out on a 3/4 day party boat.  They were targeting anything that would bite.  While fishing the Huntington Flats, one fellow hooked on a nice 'but, got it to the surface, gaffed and brought her aboard.  When the deckhand saw the red hook in the flatties mouth he hollered out, "Red Hook! Break out the red hooks!" Several fish were caught, many shorts, but one that weighed in at 28#.  That's a nice So.Cal. Halibut.  It may be small by some of our buddies up north, but down here we have a smaller variety of halibut.  Many guys who fish for white seabass also have come to really trust having some red on their jigs for WSB, and red hooks ready for fishing fin-bait. There are some water related optical reasons for the attraction to red hooks or red on white jigs.  I'm no scientist, but I'll try anything that adds a bit to my luck. Assist 510 Jigging Lure Stinger Hooks

Here's a trick new gizmo that's looking for applications.  Gamakatsu recently came out with a neat stinger hook rig that's going to be seen on a lot of lures as time rolls along.  This new accessory will change the way anglers fish vertical jigs.  You see, jigs work great so long as fish do what's expected, and strike the right end of the lure.  When they don't you get bumped, but not hooked.  With the Assist 510 you can improve your odds of setting a hook by running the rig at the head of your lure.  It's designed to hook any fish that strikes the head of a vertically jigged lure.  

The hook itself is a super short shank with a round wide gap and long sticky sharp curved point, and a micro barbed reverse barb. The out-barb prevents the hook from catching on or chaffing the main-line.  The hook is firmly attached to a loop made from super-strong braded line.  The loop and hook shank are covered with a durable heat shrink tubing that protects the loop connection from abrasion and saltwater.  The loop and shrink tubing are both done in red for a little extra attraction, like a blood line on some lures and bait catchers.  

To attach, just run the loop through an eye of the lure and loop it back over the hook, you're done. No split rings, knots or anything else, rigging is easy and fast.  The hooks range from 1 to 4/0, tin finished for corrosion resistance.  The loop on the 1-3/0 Assist's is 100# test, for the 4/0 it bumps up to 150#. The Assist runs $4.99, three per pack for all sizes except the 4/0 which has two per pack. 

Gamakatsu has also introduced a very creative Nose Ring Treble Hook system that's a wonderful tool for catching halibut. Trap rigs are by far the most effective system for catching elusive fish like halibut. Halibut are well known for mouthing a bait from the tail, and if they sense anything wrong, spitting the bait. You know when this happens, you'll see the scratches along the back sides of your once frisky bait. With a trap rig this happens much less, you end up with a fish caught instead of a bait spit. Gamakatsu's Nose Ring Rigs are a great solution, and will definitely help you nail some nice tasting halibut. They're available in both single hook and treble hook configurations. One very nice feature is that the nose ring can be slid up or down along the main line accommodating baits of different lengths.
