Mustad makes an amazing assortment of hooks. I've selected several products for specific applications, a live bait hook for all species of fish and hooks targeted specifically for big game applications.

MUSTADHOOKS.jpg (43858 bytes)For bait fishing we carry the 92677 model of Mustad hooks, as well as their standard bait hook model #94150 in addition to other popular designs.  Both meet my specs very well, and offer an excellent value. Both styles of hooks are hollow-ground, they sharpen easily and hold up to a day's fishing well. These hooks feature a small ring, are bronzed for low visibility, have a special short shank.  The 94150 is not forged and has a straight shank, while the 92677 offers a special bend (kirbed) that can improve hook sets significantly and is forged for strength. These Mustad hooks offer excellent value and performance. The 94150 and 92677's are a couple high use, high economy quality bait hooks.  These hooks will rust out, I look at 'em as basically a one day's use product given corrosion.  That's not necessarily bad, it's a better option for catch and release if you can't free a hook or the fish breaks off.  Just don't expect to use the same hook over multiple trips and if you get some saltwater in your hook box you can expect things to grow...  So, you'll want to organize your selection and just expose what you figure you'll use to the elements when you're on the boat.*

*[Tip: Regarding hooks rusting, Tom at our shop makes good use of empty film canisters (who uses film these days...).  He likes to carry multiple hook sizes, in some quantity - more than I usually do since I most often plan on getting skunked... you only need a couple hooks if you're working on a bagel.    To each canister goes one size hook, and then Tom adds a little uncooked rice.  The rice will absorb moisture, keeping the unused hooks dry and rust free...longer.]

Mustad Ultra Point Live Bait Hooks

Mustad's Ultra Point is a premium hi-carbon steel hook with a sharp and strong hook.  The nice thing about this hook's point is that it's strong and is unlikely to blunt itself when it penetrates tough cartilage.  These hooks are packaged in 25 count bags, as well we're stocking the smaller pocket packs which hold anywhere from 8 to 2 hooks depending upon the size.  We stock them in sizes #4-6/0 for the large 25 packs and from #8-8/0 for the smaller pocket packs..

Mustad Ultra Point Circle Hooks

mustad39950.jpg (32676 bytes)Mustad recently introduced a very nice line of quality circle hooks.  They're an economical and effective product, with a very sharp point.  The new hook is available in sizes #4-9/0 in quantities of 25.  As much as I like my Owners, if you go through a lot of hooks, a couple packs of these will do you very well at a considerable savings.  The Owners are a better grade of steel, but these guys are darn effective at a fraction of the cost. This is a better quality steel than their bronze hooks listed above in terms of rust issues.  They also will end up in the corner of a fishes mouth about 90% of the time.  The hookset is different using a circle hook.  You don't need to "set" the hook on your fish.  Just point the rod at the fish and allow the line to tighten.  Once you do that, you're most likely solidly hooked up right in the corner of the fishes mouth.

The Mustad Sea Master big game hooks are forged, have a brazed eye and are kirbed (the hook twists out a few degrees from the shaft for better hook sets).
