Mustad makes an amazing assortment of hooks. I've selected several products for
specific applications, a live bait hook for all species of fish and hooks targeted
specifically for big game applications.
Mustad Ultra Point
Live Bait Hooks 94140
Ultra Point is a premium hi-carbon steel hook with a sharp and strong
hook. The nice thing about this hook's point is that it's strong
and is unlikely to blunt itself when it penetrates tough cartilage.
pocket packs which hold anywhere from 8 to 2 hooks depending
upon the size.
Mustad introduced several new
series of hooks in 2009/2010. The new hooks are more specialized than
we've seen in the past, and offer some serious upgrades over their
coated or painted series of circle hooks which have been on the market
for almost a decade. The new hooks incorporate features requested by
Live Bait Hook R94140BLN
The 94140 is a dandy hook, and
now it's even better ringed for improved bait presentation. Super
sharp, excellent strength and design, all combine to provide a high
value quality hook.
Hoodlum 4X R10827BLN
The Hoodlum goes a couple
steps farther than the 94140 with a stronger wire to help put a stop
to larger grade fish. It's long lasting corrosion resistant finish
will provide excellent service length, and it's point will indeed
penetrate the toughest fish's mouth well.
Demon 3X Perfect Circle
Your Shopping Cart
Strength and economy combined
with an excellent design, offers anglers a high quality circle hook
for improved corner-of-the-mouth hook sets.
Demon Offset Ringed 3X
Your Shopping Cart
Offset for greater hook-up
rates, and 3X strong for serious offshore fishing. This bait hook
combines excellent strength with great presentation for live bait
fishing. A ringed hook allows a bait to swim better, less binding,
and more natural presentation. The hottest bait gets bit best, and
this hooks design combines features we sincerely benefit from
having: circle hook design, strength, offset, and they're ringed!
Demon Offset Ringed 4X
Your Shopping Cart
The Demon offset ringed 4X
strong hook is a long range hook destined for greatness. An offset
or kirbed hook provides excellent hook up ratios. It's super sharp
point penetrates, but it will be less prone to wearing/cutting it's
way out of a fish on an extended fight.
Tournament Approved Circle
Hook 39951BLN 1X -
The 39951 is a fine wire
circle hook, approved for tournament use, and favored by folks
targeting sailfish and other species.
Mustad Trolling Lure Hooks and Big Game Bait Hooks
Other hook models and sizes are available by request.
Mustad Big Game Two
looking to replace a few lure rig hooks or rig up a few lures? We're
stocking Mustad's very popular 7691 stainless steel hooks in convenient
two packs. The ten packs are more cost effective if you're doing a
bunch of lures, but for simplicity and economy these two packs can be very
handy! These hooks are also available in a
non-stainless steel form, shown below.
Another big game hooks that's
developed a strong following, similar to the 7691 but with a slightly
different shape, not turning back towards the shank, is Mustad's 7731D. These are typically used for rigging trolling lures. For
tandem rigs some folks like using both the 7691 and the 7731 with the
more open hook placed at the back (though different folks may have
differing opinions in this regard).
For re-rigging cedar plugs use the
Mustad 3412 Needle-eye 10/0. We also stock Mustad's 8/0 size
which is the better size for rigging small cedar plugs (which usually
come from the manufacturer with the large 10/0 size needle eye hooks).
Mustad Bait Hooks
For bait fishing
we carry the 92677 model of Mustad
hooks, as well as their standard bait hook model #94150 in addition to
other popular designs. Both meet my specs very well, and
offer an excellent value. Both styles of hooks are hollow-ground, they
sharpen easily and hold up to a day's fishing well. These hooks feature a small ring, are
bronzed for low
visibility, have a special short shank. The 94150 is not forged and has a straight
shank, while the 92677 offers a special bend (kirbed) that can improve hook sets
significantly and is forged for strength. These Mustad hooks offer excellent value and
performance. The 94150 and 92677's are a couple high use, high economy quality
bait hooks. These hooks will rust out, I look at 'em as
basically a one day's use product given corrosion. That's not
necessarily bad, it's a better option for catch and release if you
can't free a hook or the fish breaks off. Just don't expect to
use the same hook over multiple trips and if you get some saltwater in
your hook box you can expect things to grow... So, you'll want
to organize your selection and just expose what you figure you'll use
to the elements when you're on the boat.*
Regarding hooks rusting,
Tom at our shop makes good use of empty film canisters (who uses film
these days...). He likes to carry multiple hook sizes, in some
quantity - more than I usually do since I most often plan on getting
skunked... you only need a couple hooks if you're working on a bagel.
To each canister goes one size hook, and then Tom adds a little
uncooked rice. The rice will absorb moisture, keeping the unused
hooks dry and rust free...longer.]
popular hook style option for anglers is Mustad's 9174 O'Shaunghnessy
style bait hook. These are a very economical hook, packed 50 per
box. We stock them in sizes 6-6/0.
