Z-Wing

Great engineering has finally been applied to deep water fishing. Everyone knows the benefits of using downriggers for all species of gamefish. Fish spend more time in deep water than they do splashing the surface. Downriggers are a great investment in better fishing success, but they do have some drawbacks. Chief among these is the darn downrigger weight. They are a lethal nuisance, bouncing around on a boat. They also drift back considerably from the boat while trolling. So, while you have 100 feet of line out, your downrigger ball may only be 40 feet under. The Z-Wing cures the big downsides of downrigger use. We also carry standard downrigger weights if that's your preference. But, I have to say, once you use the Z-Wings, especially for higher speed trolling, you'll never go back to the weight. The wings are a lot better to have on you boat, safer for your toes and gellcoat - OUCH!.

DOWNRIGGER WEIGHTS

Well, having said how much I like the Z-Wings, now here's the alternative. If you slow troll, there's not a functional difference between a standard cannon ball and a Z-Wing, it's as you increase speed that blow-back becomes an issue. We offer three downrigger weights in the standard cannon ball configuration, 8#, 10#, 12#. The weights are also coated. Another way to get around the blow-back problem is to use more weight, and slim down the surface area of the cannon ball. That's the Master Slicer, a pancake shaped 13# hunk of lead, coated, and finned for better tracking. If you're going to go with a standard weight, these are the best product out there. I know, I've been looking for the right supplier for some time now.

DOWNRIGGER / PLANER / OUTRIGGER AND FLAT LINE CLIPS

AFTCO's Roller-Troller Clips are "the kind." They feature a roller that's easy on your line and allows you to let out more line as needed without resetting the clip. The roller trollers come with a snap swivel for attaching to a cleat or a planner/downrigger. They also manufacture the same basic clips for use with outriggers. You'll be most pleased using these clips with lines of 40 lb. or greater test. These clips are not for the lighter line, use the pressure pad type clips from Scotty, Offshore or Cannon instead when using 30 lb. and less. The roller-trollers serve as an excellent flat line clip, the best on the market. Other uses may dictate other styles, such as the Goldfinger clips. These use wire instead of the roller and are often used as a less expensive outrigger clip, kite fishing and with downriggers.

The AFTCO clip is great for running medium to heavier lines.

Offshore Line Releases

Superior quality line releases at realistic prices. Offshore produces some very good quality line releases at some realistic prices. Use these clips as both flat-line clips and with your downrigger or planer. They're available in light, medium and heavy pressure. Use the light for lines up to 25 lb. and the medium for line tests to 40# and go heavy for the big trolling gear. These clips can also do good duty as flat line clip. That's a great way to keep your lure on the water & run more lines in the spread.

Down-Rigger Alternative

Fishing big salt water isn't like puttering around in a lake. It gets a lot deeper, rougher, and holds bigger fish, too. You have to make your offering available to the bitters, where ever they might be. That often means you need to work more of the water column for a bite. Downriggers can help you cover more of the water column and that can be a critical difference in achieving fishing success. I've got a downrigger and still often use the product when I'm targeting certain fish, like halibut or sometimes while sharking. I like using it a lot, but it can be a hassle to deploy, especially from a small boat. Often, I'll leave it home to save the space, only to wish later I'd had a way to get to the deeper fish. Well, here's an alternative which allows you to easily cover a lot more water and you'll have no excuse not to keep one of the rigs on the boat. The compact planer pack is one of more useful items you can buy!

To deploy, all you do is attach the poly line to a cleat, attach your line to the planner and let out both lines. Boom, you're done, that is until a fish hooks up. I'm most excited about using this product with a shallow or deep diving plug. Instead of covering the top ten feet with a lure, you can be working 60 feet or better. If you target yellowtail or tuna on the troll, you really should strongly consider adding this item to your boat's arsenal. It's a great high speed planer package.
