Scotty is a major force in
downriggers, better known with salmon and freshwater fishermen, and gaining a good
saltwater reputation. They have several very reliable offerings suitable for the
offshore environment. I've used their StrongArm 1085 manual downrigger for several years,
with good performance. I have to admit, their counter became non-functional after
only two years use. I have friends who have not had the same issue. Another negative,
I absolutely hate their clip used for attaching a weight to the downrigger. If you
run a Z-Wing please grab Cannon's Terminators and replace the Scotty ball clip.
Scotty's ball clip is made to give way, so if you get hung up on the bottom you'll lose
the ball but probably not the cable or clip. That's an okay idea for a cannon ball,
but with a $50 ZWing I'd rather risk the cable. With those two complaints aside, I
can say the Scotty has been a good unit to own. My own Scotty has put plenty of fish
in the boat, and I do not regret the purchase one bit. I've fished mine now for
about six years, the hardware and operation have been reliable and free of any
corrosion. I've had no problems at all with the brake system either. Feedback
from other folks has also been quite positive regarding Scotty's product for marine
applications.

Manual Downriggers
Scotty's manual downriggers are packed with features that
no other downriggers have. Features that help catch more fish like the low profile
horizontal spool, automatic brake, faster retrieve speed, tilt up mount and the adjustable
slip clutch. Every Scotty carries a lifetime warranty backed by Scotty's
forty years of quality production and the Scotty 100% commitment to service.
SCOTTY manufacturers downriggers and supplies that really
fit into our style of fishing. Scotty's release clips and accessories are among the best
out there, and their Snapper is a particularly dandy product. They make several for
application with a downrigger, planer or as a flat line clip. They offer a lot of value,
and work very nicely. Unlike the Aftco Roller Troller, these do apply pressure on
the line, so once set, you cannot let out more line. Pressure is applied by soft pads,
with variable release tension based on moving the line in or out of the "jaws."
They do take more of the load off your rod and reel than the Aftco's will, but don't allow
you to let out more line once set up without having to fiddle around with the clip. They
work well for all line classes, but I prefer them for lighter line application, and
suggest using the AFTCO's for the big stuff.
Scotty's Snapper Release allows you to stack lines from your
downrigger easily. Select either the18 inch or 48 inch leader model when placing your
order. Heavy mono cable is attached to a nickel-silver trolling snap which clinches firmly
to the downrigger cable allowing easy installation and rod stacking. All of the following
clips are good for a wide range of line tests. The model 1046 is really best suited
for lines under 15#, the other models will work with lines ranging from 8# up to 30# or
greater. If you need to go heavier than that please visit the Accessories page and
search out Offshore, AFTCO and Cannon's releases.
#1042 Standard Release standard snap 6" of
line - good for the terminal clip. Good for attaching to your planer or downrigger. These
can also be used like the Aftco's as a flat line clip. @ $7.99 (left in image)
#1041
Snapper Release w/18" of mono from the clip to the Snapper cable snap
- good for stacking or use with a planer @ $7.99
#1040
Snapper Release w/48" of mono from the clip to the Snapper cable snap
- best for stacking @ $7.99
# 1046 Scotty's
Mini Snapper Release comes with a 18 inch leader, and cable snap - best for lighter
lines @ $6.75
Scotty Gimbal Mount
With the Gimbal Mount you can easily pop your downrigger into a
rod holder, so you don't have drill any holes. I personally prefer a fixed mount
when possible, but this is a very good alternative. The mount is available in either
a standard 9" or 12" version to fit most all rod holders. Don't go this
route on a rail mounted rod holder, it's best for the standard gunnel variety of rod
holder.
# 1028 Scotty's 9" Gimbal Mount @ $69.75
#
1029 Scotty's 12" Gimbal Mount @ $74.75
Your Scotty comes with a fixed mount bracket, but some folks like
the idea of positioning another mount on the boat, or setting up another boat for use with
the same downrigger. With any of the saltwater oriented products, I'd suggest going
with their 1023 Longarm Mount Bracket. It will handle all Longarm and Strongarm
models.
