FISH HANDLING ACCESSORIES

Pre-Vent

Here's a new item from us. Venting bottom fish that we release has been something most of us would like to do, but could not or would not take the time to learn. As recreational fishermen we are conservationists, we want to see better fishing and sustainable fishing. Most of us abhor the sight of a caught and released fish suffering unable to move below the surface because of an extended air bladder. Worse yet is seeing a short you've released being gulped down by a bird - without a fair chance to swim away and fight again another day. Jerry Barber posted an article about making a release device may years ago on our site, posted in our Fishermen's Journal section. Finally we came across three excellent devices for easily and safely venting a catch. It's the safest and best built tool available. It's much safer than a hypodermic needle, and greatly increases the survival rate of sport caught reef fish. It's simple to use, comfortable and the two larger size models have two depth setting, so you can safely vent a smaller catch. I think these should be considered mandatory on larger commercially operated sportboats, six-packs, and a piece of basic equipment on a private boat. Simple as that.
*DO NOT CUT OR PUNCTURE WHAT IS PROTRUDING OUT OF THE FISH'S MOUTH*
This is NOT the swim bladder, it's the stomach. Use of the Pre-Vent by commercial and recreational anglers greatly increases the fish's ability to survive and reproduce for many generations to come.

How to use:
It's best to vent the fish as quickly as possible, with a minimum of handling. Hold the fish gently, but firmly on it's side and insert the venting tool at a 45-degree angle approximately one to two inches back from the base of the pectoral fin. Only insert the tool deep enough to release the gases - do not skewer the fish!. The sound of the escaping gas is audible, and deflation is noticeable. The extended stomach should not be punctured, and should go back to it's normal position upon proper venting. Insert the needle, between/under the fish's scales if possible. If necessary, revive the fish by passing back and forth in the water so water passes the gills.

A Guide to Venting Reef Fish

Team Marine USA manufactures top of the line fishing and marine accessories that might interest you. Two receiving remarkable acceptance throughout Florida and the southeastern United States is our latest series of Venting Tools.

Protecting our fishing resources is becoming paramount in today’s commercial and recreational fisheries and or Pre-Vent tools are definitely working by safely deflating extended gas bladders in deepwater fish. With our dedicated effort toward conserving our fisheries we have engineered the latest and safest, state of the art venting tool. These tools are manufactured in Tampa, Florida, feature exceptional quality are reusable and warranted for life.

Our Pre-Vent Series - venting tools with its explicitly engineered spread-bore needle is designed to be minimally invasive to the fish by creating a small c-flap incision under a scale. When it’s removed, the incision re-seats under the scale for quick healing and minimal chance of infection. Our vent tools are also angler safe. Its one-handed operation and retractable needle make it ideal for safe venting.

Proper release of marine fishes has become increasingly important. In order to maintain healthy fish populations, both commercial and recreational anglers are responsible for carefully handling of fish that are not harvested so they can spawn or be caught again.

The Problem: Marine reef fish have a gas-filled swim bladder which controls buoyancy allowing the fish to maintain a certain depths. When fish are brought quickly to the surface by hook and line the gas in their swim bladders expands. This can result in serious injury to internal organs and if released in this buoyant condition, it may float away and die from exposure or become an easy target for predators. This defeats the purpose of fishery management laws such as minimum size restrictions and daily bag limits.

Swim Bladder Science: For the most part, reef fish have an internal organ known as a swim bladder. It is filled mostly with oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen and is located in the peritoneal cavity attached to the fish’s backbone beneath the dorsal fin. Swim bladders can expand only so far before they burst. When they do burst, the gases escape into the fish’s body cavity, where they can continue to expand. As a result the pressure exerted by these gases is sufficient to push the stomach out the mouth and the intestines out of the anus. Venting will release these gases, thus eliminating the pressure on internal organs. If the internal damage is not excessive, the organs will return to place once the gases are expelled. Venting also allows the fish to overcome buoyancy problems and returning to comfortable habitat depths and enhancing its immediate survival.

When to Vent: Scientific studies have shown that species with large swim bladders such as red grouper, black sea bass, and gag receive immediate benefit from venting. Your ability to judge which fish should be vented will improve with practice and experience. After reeling in a fish, closely observe its condition; if the fish is bloated, floats or is unable to control buoyancy, or if the fish’s stomach is distended out of its mouth it should be vented. If the fish appears normal, not bloated, and is able to swim down venting is not necessary.

How to Vent: It’s best to vent the fish quickly with a minimum of handling. If the fish’s stomach is inverted out the mouth, do not attempt to push it back into the body. Expelling the swim bladder gases will allow the stomach to return to its normal position within a few hours. Hold the fish gently but firmly on its side and insert the venting tool at a 45-degree angle approximately where the pectoral fin ends. Only insert the tool deep enough to release the gases “do not skewer the fish”. The sound of the escaping gas is audible and deflation is noticeable. If a fish is extremely bloated, use your other hand to exert gentle pressure on the abdomen to aid deflation. Never puncture an inverted stomach because this only results in additional injury.
