For a long time I've been interesting in bug'n,
always impressed with what folks doing it had the potential to bring to
the plate. Yep, lobster and crab as a target? That's darn
tasteful. If you boat in Southern California you've got a great inshore
resource - lobster and big spider crabs. Further up the coast the
eating gets even better, with tasty and more succulent crabs. If you
love fishing, love being on the water, here's another great excuse to
have the boat in the water. It's a wonderful way to add another
dimension to your "fishing."
Besides bug'n, we've also selected a number of
bait catching devices for inclusion to this page. The traps and
umbrella nets can be very useful for private boaters in grabbing a few
pieces of bait, and matching the hatch.
Like any type of fishing, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to check your
state's regulations regarding appropriate gear and seasons. Just because
it's listed on this page, don't assume the devices mentioned are legal
in your neck of the woods. You must check the regs!!!
New From Promar - LED Glow Light
folks from Promar continually come out with nifty items for
fishermen and boaters. Their newest addition to their line is an LED
Glow Light Stick. Unlike other light sticks, these are reusable. The
light's housing is luminescent, and uses replaceable batteries for
power. It's a chemical-free means to shed some light on your bait
cages, for use as markers, for whatever use you'd put your basic
light stick to accomplishing.
- Replaceable Batteries
- Glow Casing
- Extra Batteries Included!
useful new item from Promar is their Seal Proof Bait boxes (AC
300SP). These are durable, and should deal with bait theft quite
well. They clip onto your nets securely with their carbineer type
snaps. The snaps are also available separately in 10 packs and make
use of a large stainless steel split ring on one end for easy
attachment to the bait cage.
offer many really neat things that
fishermen use. One new item we're now
stocking is their Cast nets. These
are a very good quality product, hand made
with six panels. They are weighted
and really are a cinch to cast. They
offer the nets in several sizes from 5 to
12 feet in diameter. All the nets
come in a handy storage container so
you've got a place to put 'em when they're
not in the water. The first nets
listed are their best, with a mesh size of
1/4" and 1 1/2 pounds of lead per foot.
We also have their more economical nets
listed below. The Econo-Casting nets
from Promar use a 3/8" mesh and are 3/4#
per foot. The lighter nets are
easier for folks new to the art of bait
making, and for use in shallower waters.
Crab Net/Pier Landing Net
These are the nets
you need for catching crabs, lobsters and
for landing fish from a pier, boat or
bridge. They are heavy duty, twenty
inches deep, with polyethylene netting
that's deep enough to hold and prevent the
escape of your catch. They're zinc
galvanized steel construction prevents
rust on the opper and lower rings. The
standard net has an upper ring measuring
32 inches, with a 12" lower ring.
also feature a bait sock in the bottom to
hold onto your bait - no need for a bait
box. The net is available in either black
or green netting.
The NE-103 Crab
Net Harness includes 60 feet of poly rope,
and two 5 inch secure floats.
Lobster/Crab Hoop Net - NE-102J
The Jumbo Hoop Net
has all the same features as the model
101, it's just bigger. The net
features a 36" upper ring and 14" lower
ring. It also comes with two secure
marker floats and 100 feet of poly rope.
ProMar's Eclipse net, about as close
to a trap as you can get without being cited by Fish and Game.
It's 36 inches in width and 20" high, and with the sides angling
back inward the bugs really will be more likely to remain in the
net by the time you pull 'em up to the boat. These new nets are
unrigged, but we've got you covered there with a new Pro kit that
includes the larger floats, rope and a bait box for only $19.99.
The new net sells for $39.99.
ProMar's introduced a new net for 2009's season, their Ambush.
The Ambush is trap-like in it's construction, but it's not a
trap, the bugs can indeed escape. That's what makes it a legal
net in the eyes of the DFG, and that was confirmed again in the
DFG's 2009/10 regs. It's
32 inches wide, making it more manageable for those using kayaks
for their hoop'n. This net features non-collapsable sides, it's
also steeper in design and higher on the sides, making it harder
for the bugs to crawl out. You should
pair this net with ProMar's NE 103 Pro harness/accessory kit, not
the EK version. These are great tools folks, very likely the most
effective net a novice bugger can own. There is one competitor to
this net on the market, the ProMar is indeed better because of the
angle and depth of the side walls. This net, like all other
ProMar's also has a built in bait bag at the bottom of the net.
For 2016 ProMar
introduced a larger sized Ambush, this
one a full 36 inches wide!
Nets are oversized, so shipping does carry
an expense. We will not bill or ship your order until you have
been notified of the final shipping costs. If your plan is to buy
just one net, be prepared that shipping may run more than the cost
of a net! So, it's a much better plan to
buy a few nets and spread out the cost
of the shipping over several nets. It's
much more economical that way.
We will try to
defray some of the shipping costs for
case packs of nets, but do understand
that these things are big and relatively
heavy. A full case of nets may end up
costing $80 and more to some areas.
Before billing, we will contact you
directly regarding the shipping costs
associated with your order of nets -
they can not be shipped at no charge.
However, when you buy a full case there
is a cost savings on the nets of 10%.
Hoopin' It Up
Salazar is a long time friend. Back when I was
starting up CharkBait we'd gab on the radio,
swap fishing reports, and share spots. Several
years ago he teamed up with the folks at ProMar
and became a field tester for their lobster
products. He knows buggin like no other person I
know. Jim recently wrote an excellent book about
catching bugs. It covers all the basics, and
goes well beyond anything I've come across. If
you want to catch lobster, you need to buy his
book. It's as simple as that. It's the best $15
investment in a great meal you can make.

Salazar shares personal skills developed through years of hoop'n, and
provides and in-depth look into the equipment, gear, baits and
techniques it takes to have a successful night on the water. Hosted by
Ben Hong and Jim, from ProMar, there isn't a facet of hoop netting that
isn't covered, with incredible nighttime footage of a giant squid float.

are lots of reasons to use these nets.
Here's my favorite: If you keep your boat
in the harbor like I do, you've got a
great opportunity to catch the best
halibut bait you can find: smelt. Not only
are they good for halibut, it seems like
every predatory fish from yellowtail to
white seabass relish smelt. So, toss
in some bread in to the bait sock and toss
her over the side when you go to bed.
When you wake up, you'll probably have
enough pieces of quality bait to bring
home the bacon...or more likely some
Ahi Sabiki Rigs
takes a lot to get a guy excited about a bait catching rig.
Usually it's just one more thing to bring on the boat. I've got to
give the Ahi rigs their due, they're a great rig. All Ahi
Sabiki rigs are produced from only the highest quality components.
They feature a ball bearing and crane swivels, designed to minimize
line kinds and twist. You'll get more use from these rigs than
others, you'll take care of them as you would a valued lure.
You won't toss 'em in the trash after one use. They are
equipped with sharp, high quality hooks, hand tied to super strong
nylon chip leader material. The rigs are enhanced with green
glow and red flash beads. Each rig included six hooks, differing
line weight between main and branch lines.
of the hassles some folks experience in
using a sabiki is what to do with it after
you've used it to make bait. They don't
lend themselves to being repackaged too
well, with several hooks six feet or so of
mainline plus the droppers. Also, it takes
time to rig and put away, and then you
might not have one handy when the bait
does pop up again. The Ahi rig stows the
sabiki inside the rod! Over the past
couple years several Sabiki rods have come
on the market, and again ProMar/Ahi came
up with some improvements over what has
been available. Again stowing the sabiki
rig, and the rod is an issue for private
boaters as well as long range fishermen.
The Ahi design is multi-piece (3 to be
exact). It's also a little longer, helping
to get the rig away from the boat, and
other angler's tangles. The rod also
features a gimble (with cap) to aid in
use. For use with conventional reels.
micro-squid from Ahi.
Ahi Squid Rigs
The folks from Ahi
offer several very nice squid catching
rigs, from gangion style to some BIG jigs
for Humbolt or Baja giants. All are luminous,
all offer large barbless hooks and are
made with attention to quality and value.
The first item offered is a multi-hook
gangion style jig. They're wonderful
for Arrow squid, for 6 inch squirts.
a very unique product, one we're sure no one in your neighborhood
owns. For folks traveling where the really big squid reside,
like Baja, we've got something that's going to make your eyes bug out
just like Beth's do when she finds a box of See's candy on my desk...
If you're targeting 20# plus squid, this is a great jig.
This is a MONDO size squid jig, over one foot
long, luminious, lots of hooks for grabbing these tasty cephlapods.
You can get an idea of the size, the coin next to the jig is a
quarter. This is a very big squid jig, a bit over one foot in
length. Catch a giant squid
on a jig like this and you'll be making calimari steaks not little
rings! Heck, you could end up making a ring big enough to put a
basketball through! These are GIANT squid jigs for GIANT squids.
NE-701 and NE-736
you ever returned to the dock with a bunch
of great bait, only to feed the birds?
Some folks discovered that you can toughen
up and "cure" your bait better, save a few
dollars by re-using baitfish. Even
better, you can make some smelt at the
dock and keep 'em in the bait motel for
later use. Also, for folks traveling
to Catalina or San Clemente for an
overnighter (or any destination for that
matter). Why run the risk of draining your
battery by running a bait pump all night
long? Don't do it, just transfer
your bait to a small motel for the
evening. The bait motels are quality
constructed for extended use.
They're great for the dock and for use
aboard your boat while at sea.

NE 736 - 36"
(Dive Collection Bag) NE-311
Here's a useful device, sharkers and
anyone trying to bring bait close to the
boat can really use. One trick a lot
of mackerel makers do is to toss in some
cheap dry dog food, maybe a can of fish
cat food in the bag and hang it over the
side of the boat. If there are macks
around they'll be clinging to the boat
quickly. 16" wide x 27" deep.
Halibut/Salmon Net - coated -LN-501B
More and more folks
are realizing that they can help the
future of our fishery by practicing catch
and release, and by observing size limits
and safely releasing the shorts. A
fine mesh net is easier on a fish, less
likely to split fins and damage a fish's
The picture above
shows our coated fine mesh Mega-Net. To
the right is the uncoated version.
The coated net is easier to deal with,
hooks less likely to penetrate the mesh.
The uncoated version is a bit softer.

introduced something all boaters will
appreciate. Their new collapsible
landing net stores in a very compact
state. When needed a simple flick of
the wrist can lock the net's mechanism
into a locked and open state.
Release a brace and it's ready to fold
back down for easy storing. Let's
face it, no matter how large your boat is
space is limited. Landing nets are a
legal responsibility in a lot of states,
and this net covers that side of a
boater's requirement as well as offering
you a better way to land a good catch.
There are two sizes available, both are
large enough to take a good size fish.
UPDATED GRANDE VERSION
The new Promar
Grande Catch N' Release Net LN501BT offers
extended reach that are of benefit to
anglers and to their catch. The handle
extends from 48 to a whopping 96 inches in
length, and makes use of a double pin yoke
and large 28" by 30 inch hoop. The net
also makes use of Promar's HookResist
rubber coated netting for less hassle with
hooks getting tangeled in the netting.
Products: Livewell Net, Telescopic Hand
are a couple very useful items most
boaters will appreciate. First off,
the livewell bait net will impres you with
it's construction, soft mesh net,
comfortable corkgrip handle and shere
usefulness. It's a dandy bait net.
The hand gaff is
something the kayakers will appreciate.
It's telescopic, will extend to close to
four feet, and then retract to about two
feet in length.
Promar Rubber Landing Nets
Promar has developed a new line of rubber
landing nets, the Dan Hernandez Signature Series. The netting
features a thermoplastic rubber molded bag, for more landing strength
with less weight to the net. The pliable rubber bag netting makes
this a 100% snag proof and especially effective for anglers fishing with
treble or multiple hooks. It's also a good way to go for catch and
release fishing since this type of netting is less damaging to the fish.
There are three sizes available from 24" to 60" handle length, from 16"
to 28" in maximum diameter.
