River 2 Sea Lures

Before getting into the product, here's a little testimonial about what River2Sea lures can accomplish...

Hey Mark, just got back from a trip to Alaska last week and have some pictures for ya.  On 7/31 I fished with Captain Andy Mezirow on the Crackerjack Voyager out of Seward, AK.  We got into some decent halibut, lingcod, and yelloweye rockfish.  Got limits of halibut for the boat up to 80-90 lbs.  I gave Captain Andy some River2Sea Sea Rock jigs (purchased at the shop) to try out for lingcod and he hooked and landed a nice halibut: Now the amazing part of this story is that the very next day, Andy let a customer of his fish the same jig (500g Sea Rock) and it landed a monster 330 pounder!  Thought I'd pass this along as I'm sure you'd be interested in hearing that these Sea Rock jigs are legitimate!  Andy is the best of the best when it comes to halibut fishing in Alaska, and this was the biggest halibut to ever grace the decks of any of his boats, and the biggest to come into the port of Seward, ever.

Knife Jigs
We've been following these lure's performance for about a year's time.  There are some folks who have found them to be quite productive performers for wahoo and in some cases for bottom fishing, too.  They are a unique design, very popular in Asia.  In Asia these lures are often fished on spinning tackle, then again we're trying to catch larger fish where better drag systems are more critical, so I see no reason to head off in that direction.  I believe they imitate needlefish more than anything else, and as such they're a darn good match to the hatch in warmer waters.  I have no doubt that folks targeting any predatory gamefish will find them useful tools.  Because of their heavy weight and thin design, they'll drop very quickly and attain depths without creating problems due to your line billowing out.  On a stout rod they'll also cast well given their high weight and thin shape, less wind resistance than many lures. Once you cast the lure hang on and maintain a good feel during the drop, that's likely where you'll load up.

Will these lures out perform our more standard practice of fishing "the iron" or working diamond jigs? Not in my opinion. Knife jigs are nothing revolutionary (despite the words of another well known bicycle manufacturer who spends more time price-fixing the retail marketplace than designing fishing equipment...). Knife jigs are just another tool to a fisherman. Sometimes you want a fast "drop" sometimes you don't. Given the way these lures are fished, a fast retrieve is also not required or necessarily desired. Fact is you can make a very strong argument for a LOW gear ratio reel. For those times you need a fast sinking jig, the knifes make good sense. When you need more of a flutter and more opportunity for a bite going down (like suspended yellowtail) our standard iron, like a Tady TLC, AA or 4/0, Sumo #5 is a better choice. But, if you need to fish real deep water, deal with a fast ripping current or drift, fishing the knife with skinny spectra line is a good technique to consider. It's all about applications. For a lot of fishermen the knife jig will be a fad. They'll boil on advertising instead of using their own noodle and realizing the opportunities and methods best suited for a particular day's fishing.

The lures come unrigged.  Some folks opt to rig them up with an open eye siwash with a split ring, for others the best rigging comes from the use of free swinging assist style hooks (listed here as well). The assist hooks are packaged three per pack, except for the double rigs which come two rigs per pack. For the split rings we suggest Owner's Hyper Wires, and for the open eye hooks again we recommend the Owner Stinger open eyes.

Sea Rock

Another popular style of jigs from River 2 Sea are their Sea Rocks. These are weighted head first, giving a more traditional action on the drop. They do have more action, and I believe you'll find them very effective fished vertically. Basically these are a head first weighted lure verses the butt heavier as the Knifes offer. Both get bit, but there's more action on the drop with the Sea Rock style. The knife will drop faster, and that can be an advantage in certain conditions and depths.

We're stocking the Sea Rock jigs in five sizes and five patterns. The big one is 700 grams/25 ounces! It's one big jig for specific conditions and sought after fish like BIG grouper. We also stock the 500, 300. 200 and 150 gram models. Patterns include sardine, purple back, blue back, green back and a brown bait. Another nice feature of the SeaRock jigs is their beautiful finish. Great detail and care has been taken in making these lures. They are very reflective, with a holographic effect. They're even luminous to attract more attention down deep.

Rig these jigs as you would the knife jigs above. Some guys prefer to use split rings to attach a treble or single siwash on the rear, with single or double assist hooks on the front of the lure. You can run the front hooks using a split ring attached to the nose ring, then add a welded or stamped ring. Take a look at our Owner page for rings. A few of our wahoo-nuts like running larger trebles on the rear of these jigs and the knifes, thinking that the 'hoo will grab and clinch down on the lure as long as there is pressure on the line. It's a matter of personal taste, and there's plenty of room to experiment.
