Scroungers or wiggle heads are something we like
a lot for inshore use, shallow water fishing.
They help provide a bit more action to a lure,
slow your retrieve down, increases vibration,
adds enticing action to any swimbait or grub,
and you increase it's bite-ability. Further,
your lure becomes almost weedless/snagfree!
This type
of lure was pretty much history a few years ago.
We gobbled up all we could find of one of the
original makers of the jig heads, but finally
they gave up production. We kept looking. First
Aaron Martens came up with a very nice plain
ball style head, nice clear plastic bill, rigged
with a snap on the front end and upgraded hooks.
We stock these in 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2
ounce sizes. We've sold those in our Huntington
Beach shop now for some time, and based upon
local guys acceptance it made sense to put 'em
up on the website.

While
visiting a trade show, I happened upon a very
small booth, with even smaller jig heads. While
they were primarily a freshwater bass type
manufacturer, they had a few things that really
did interest me. Yep, they had scroungers, and
they had the nicest ones I've ever come across.
The hook selection, nice black nickel Mustad
hooks will hold up well in the salty stuff, and
their jigs have eyes, nice beady, quality eyes
and even some with paintjobs. They are a small
manufacturer, but have made good headway with
the freshwater tournament folks. They call their
lure the Dude, and it's the ultimate tournament
grade scrounger made. It looks like a baitfish,
and has the shake of a shallow running crankbait.
You can rig the jig with any fluke like soft
bodied lures, grubs, worms, eel imitations, gulp
worms...

Here's a new one for us. An
old friend, one of our earliest clients bought the venerable old
Phenix Bait Co. Gary Black, or Agent Black as I've come to call
him, first got hold of me when I was working out of my house. We'd
hook up at a local restaurant to make delivery of fishing
supplies. He's ridden on my old boat a few times, too. Well, he
started a charter business a couple years ago, and also bought
Phenix in '07. Phenix has long been a favored manufacturer for the
bass guys, and more recently entered into the saltwater side of
things. They make a great hook, some of the finest we've come
across. We're stocking their swimbait leadheads in seven sizes and
six patterns, suitable for most inshore fishing conditions. The
coloring of these leadheads is excellent. Phenix uses three to
four coats of paint, plus a clear coat after painting so the
finish really does last. This also helps keep the eyes where they
belong...on the jig not in the water or your tackle box like some
of the cheapies out there. The jigs are packaged two per bag,
regardless of weight/size.

 The manufacturer of the
Infamous Bait-O-Matic, produces an incredible amount of fishing gear. I'm
gradually broadening my mix of products from this excellent Southern California
manufacturer. They've introduced the "cadilac of jig heads".
These minnow style jig heads, for use with soft bodied swim baits, are incredible.
They are the nicest leadheads you will find, anywhere for any amount of $. The
things are gorgeous.

Last
year's tuna run was pretty interesting. Lot's of anglers discovered the merits of
fishing Plastics on the Slide. It produced a lot of fish, often larger fish since
the bait presentation was deeper. The only downside was that the hooks made for
catching 10-15 lb. fish could have some issues with 30# albacore, especially when fished
on heavier lines. Leadheads for tuna require a lot more
strength than the bass-style product. So, Strike Master came up with an albie strength hook just for the
"sliders". The bigger hook rig is only available with the unpainted head,
as shown below.
Tuna Strong and Sized Swim Bait Offshore Slider Jig @ 3.99 / 2 pack
1.0 oz. 1.5 oz. 2.0 oz.

Similar to the jigs
above, the folks at StrikeMaster also make 'em with a black nickel
finish hook. These hooks do great in saltwater, last a long time
before corrosion raises it's ugly head. They are great for calico
bass, school size albies too. They are not suitable for larger
gamefish in the 30-50# class, but work great for anything 20#'s or
down. Packed 2 per box.
For the more economically
minded who can live without eyes, StrikeMaster makes a dandy jig
without the eyes that's a bit less expensive. We offer these both
in a standard saltwater hook as pictured below and in the black
nickel finish as the ones listed above. For serious bass'rs the BN
finish is preferred, but both get the job done well, very well.

Runner line of under-spin jigs. They are dandy!
Strike
Master has recently introduced some new Powder Coated swimbait
leadheads. These heads have a thick coating, and are
available in either red or luminescent finish. They're available
in the right weights to get your lure where you want it to go.
Mojo or Scampi leadheads are
what you need for rigging twin
and single tail swimbaits. We've got weights to match any
application, from 1/2 ounces all the way up to six ounces and more on
special order.
Here
are some very good leadheads, from an excellent manufacturer, at a
most realistic price. Strike Master's Leadheads use a good
quality bronze wire hook in a wide variety of sizes. Use these
jig heads with the slim AA swimbaits and shrimptails. They'll
do what you need done, affordably. (Packed in bags w/5 pieces)

The
Got-Cha head is a proven white seabass producer. Like our Iron
Man and Sumo jigs, you'll want to double pin a squid on the super
sharp, super strong quality hook. The leadhead will
"stand" on it's back on the bottom, with eyes gazing
upwards. It's a dandy jig, perfect for it's intended
application. They're available in both red and white, there's
a lot of local preference as to which color is preferred. I'd,
of course, suggest buying 'em both and then establishing your own
preference.
Weight is
important with these jigs. You're going to have three
opportunities to catch fish with 'em: on the drop, resting on the
bottom, and on the retrieve. Weight will determine the jigs
effectiveness, you'll want to reach the bottom with as little lead
as you can get by with. If you're fishing up tight, 5 feet
depth or so, go light. If you're in 60' of water go
heavy.

Pro-Tec
One Step Powder Paint for Jigs and Lures
Here's
a nifty product for folks with a creative flair, the
du-it-yourself-er, the dedicated basser. Pro-Tec's powder
paint is used to color (paint) jig heads and other metal
body lures. The process is easy, using a small torch, oven
or flame for 4-10 seconds. Then take the hot jig and swish
it into the powder and remove, knocking off any excess
powder. The lure should be hot enough to melt the powder
within 2-4 seconds after removal. Let the jig cool. Then, go
fishing. If you want to make the coating even more durable,
bake the jig in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for 20
minutes. One two ounce jar can coat a bunch of jigs
(depending upon their size). For the economy minded, buy the
standard unpainted jig heads, paint 'em and stick on some
eyes and you've created a "designer" quality jighead for a
fraction of the cost. If you'd like more information about
this product please talk to John, Jeff or Max at our shop
(they use it...a lot).
From the Manufacturer:
Imagine a paint with virtually no odor, no drying time,
no solvents and no mixing. Now imagine a brilliant, super-durable high
gloss finish in seconds! These qualities, coupled with a spectrum of 34
colors to choose from, have made Pro-Tec Powder Paint the obvious choice
for thousands of tackle manufacturers and consumers worldwide.
A paint that requires no primer coat and no gloss coat
translates into more money in your pocket. In fact, 1 lb. of Pro-Tec
Powder Paint will cover over 3,000 of your 3/8 oz. jigs. For the
manufacturer, that means paying less than 1/2 cent per jig based on the
5 lb. price. Combine that with a painting process that takes less than
20 minutes from start to finish and you’ve got an unbeatable product.
One coat of Pro-Tec Glow Overcoat will increase glow properties of CS
Coatings’ Pro-Tec Standard Glow powders.

Skirt/Fixn's page for eyes

leadheads.

Paint...working on getting that posted here within the week
