 Ballyhood's variant on a CharkBait theme..

We've been introducing folks to fishing a unique combination of soft tube squid and jig for several years.  My buddy Darrell, the owner of Ballyhood, must have been taking notes a few months ago when he was over because he came out with a nice variant of our squid-n-jig.  Ballyhood has a new lure they call a Soft Iron.

The new lures is weighted inside the soft bodied squid.  It's also rigged with a nice single hook and swivel at the tail for attaching your line.  You can cast it, troll it, work it off the bottom, bounce-ball it...  You can even stick a small light stick into the squirt to make it really glow when it's down deep.  We include one stick with your lure.  We have replacement packs on our Making Bait page. I have to admit, I think our Yo-zuri Squid and Jig is a better item, the Ballyhood is awfully nice and very much a value.  It's also comes with a better hook.  So, I guess we've got some competition between suppliers. Competition is a good thing for the consumer.

If you want to enhance this lure's performance even more, visit our Scents page and grab a small jar of the Smelly Jelly squid flavor scent.  The small container will last your a long time, couple seasons for most guys, and the squid will be even more attractive to your quarry.  They'll hang onto longer while you're feeling the bite and setting the hook.

I do enjoy calimari, and most every fish does too. The folks from PLine have come out with some very nice squid imitations. They are a bit different than many that have been marketed. First off, they should last longer. They are made from a more rugged plastic, a bit thicker and stronger. They are a hollow body squirt, with enough room on the larger sizes to insert a torpedo or egg sinker. They're very similar to Ballyhood's Soft Iron squid, and priced low enough that you can make that style of lure yourself for about half the money as buying one from them or us pre-rigged. They are offered in several very nice flavors. The lures all carry the same low price, with different sizes offering different quantities per pack. The small 3.5 inch squid comes five per pack, the 4.5" model is offered 3/pack, and the large 7 inch'r is sold one per pack.

Going rockfishing? Perhaps looking for a lingcod? Well, the folks at P-Line made some nice double rigs using the squids above that will catch the interest of bottom fish, and put 'em on a table where they belong. The lures are double rigged on fairly heavy line (about 80#), in a Rock Cod size 3.5" and Ling Cod 4.5" version.  The lures are a dandy value, just add the appropriate amount of lead to put 'em on the bottom and hang on to your rod. They proved themselves last year, available only at our shop. This year we expect to see some great results on the East Coast. Give 'em a try!
