Roberts Lures Ranger!
New Product
for us, and an Old Favorite for many!
Here's a new product we think you'll find quite
interesting, if you're unfamiliar. Roberts Ranger
is a wonderful lure, now being "found out" about
by more and more anglers. We used to carry the
lure, marketed by a fellow who specialized in
catching Roosters and many other species from
shore. The guy was a bit of a legend, and the last
we heard from him was that he'd moved down
south...Mexico. Well, while the lure was known
among the small circle of rooster fish
afficianados, we had a hard time selling 'em. This
was about 10 years ago. However, on the East Coast
the Roberts Lure was a standard for catching
stripers, and more.
Recently,
we're seeing more and more folk traveling to parts
of the world where focusing on Roosters has become
an obsession. And, more recently our long
range anglers have discovered just how effective
these lures can be for yellowtail. The lures work
GREAT for yellowtail, you can swim 'em, and it
seems Mexican yellowtail just can't get enough of
this unfamiliar lure. Re-rig the lure for some
great fun on wahoo, as well. (Use a Mustad 7691 or
similar, an Owner Open Eye in 7 or 8/0 sizes, or a
BIG 5/0 Owner Treble to upgrade the hooks to
something heavier or better suited for different
applications. Some do this as a matter of
course, though the supplied hooks are quite
adequate for most applications). Skip 'em along
the surface or let 'em drop down a bit than then
retrieve. You'll find that Roberts Rangers have a
wide range of fish they'll catch, and are well
worth owning. We stock some great patterns of
Roberts Rangers, in two sizes, 2 1/4 and 3 ounces.
Luhr Jensen's Krocodile
spoon is a classic. Folks catch everything
from bass, yellowtail, barracuda, bonito,
yellowfin, even halibut with these versatile
lures. They are also a dandy thing to bring
along with you if you are fortunate enough to
fish Baja, for fishing from shore or a boat.
I'm stocking what I consider the three best
colors, day in day out: a reflective
silver/chrome prism, blue or green mackerel
pattern over bright silver/chrome. These
patterns are available in three different
sizes ranging from 1 ounce to 2 1/4 ounces.
These simple spoons really are a great bait.
Want to make 'em even better and longer
lasting? That's an easy trick, replace their
stock treble hook once it gets a bit rusted
and well abused with one of Owner's new
trebles. All you need are some split rings and
the appropriate hook. You'll have even
better hook-sets and better corrosion
resistance, for a long long time! The
Kroc is probably the most efficient lure you
can buy. They'll last an eternity and
catch an awful lot of fish through the years.
We've also
carried some larger sized Krocs in the past.
Luhr Jensen is no longer able to make the
bigger lures. These are all made from Brass,
and the cost has escallated to the point where
the lures would have cost well over $20
each...closer to $30. So, the big 7 ouncers
are history.

Banana
Banana
Jigs for deep water are effective, super
effective lures. Their shape allows for a nice
swim on the drop, and they'll take a wide
range of gamefish - a very wide range. Some
use them to great effect on tuna, yellowtail,
and of course there's no rockfish that won't
jump on 'em, same for ling cod. We've made our
Banana jigs in three finishes, chrome, gold
and luminescent glow, and they're available in
five weights: 60 gm / 2.1 ounces, 100 gm / 3.5
oz, 200 gm / 7 oz, 300 gm / 10.6 oz, 400 gm /
14.1 ounces.
Compared to similar
lures on the market, we've upgraded the hooks
used on our jigs. We run a single Mustad hook
on the smallest size and 3X Mustad black
chrome trebles on the larger sizes. All hooks
are attached by way of split ring, and we add
a swivel to the nose of the lure to deal with
line twist. Nice lures folks, I'm sure you'll
agree the first time you see 'em and even more
certain once you fish 'em. Given they're our
own production, the pricing is very user
friendly, as well.
Diamond
jigs work, for a variety of gamefish. Finding a good diamond jig is
not always an easy thing however. The folks at P-Line have finally
brought out a lure that was about 2 years in producing. I don't know
why it took 'em so darn long, but I do know we've been talking about
'em for a much longer time that you'd think.
They really are a pretty simple lure to fish, and they are
productive. P-Line did add a new wrinkle to the old standby design. P-Line's lure designers
used the time well, arriving at a uniquely finished lure that
stands out from your basic Diamond Jig. As the picture shows, they
are not your basic chrome dipped lure. The new lures feature a
holographic finish that should prove long lived, and catch the eye
of a hungry fish.
CharkBait's Slash - Cast and Rip Bait
Our
Slash jig can be fished a couple ways, for great
effect. For our
long range fishermen, it's a GREAT wahoo lure.
For deepwater enthusiasts it's a deep water jig
with excellent action on the drop and wind.
Having said that, the thing casts great and we
rig it properly with a higher quality Mustad hook and a
ball bearing swivel (ours even points the right
way...) attached with welded rings. The lues are
thru-wired. Our colors
and finish are top quality. While it will bring
in wahoo when they are around, don't be afraid
to jig it for tuna and yellowtail. If your
fishing trip to Alijos shifts gears and moves to Cedros fine, you've got the right lure,
if instead you hit the banks for rockfish,
you've still got an effective lure on your
hands. One lure, fits a few applications, and a
few different styles of fishing.
This
versatile lure can be fished
several ways, cast and retrieve, vertical
yo-yo style jigging, and speed jigging. There
is a very slight curve to the lure, allowing a
bit more action on the drop and as the lure is
bounced up. It's important to keep a good
contact on the lure if you're fishing yo-yo
style for a couple reasons. First, you won't
know you've been bitten unless you've got
contact with the lure, secondly the lure can
foul itself if you don't offer some control of
its accent or descent.

The Sting-O PBJ has
gained a following from a number of serious
anglers, first the striper fin-atics, surf
fishermen, and more recently offshore
enthusiasts targeting a range of fish - from
Tuna to Wahoo. It's an East Coast jig, moving
it's way west. So, one readily apparent
observation is that the lure is darn
versatile. That's a function of a number of
things, size ranges offered, rigging
construction, shape, casting distance, and of
course their cosmetic appearance. Some have compared the lures to
a diamond jig. But, that's not too accurate
since their shape is quite a bit different,
more like a knife jig. We stock the jigs in
all sizes, from 2 ounces up to 14, in both
color patterns - silver and gold.
Please note, we are
in the process of replacing this lure with one
of our own, so stock is limited to what's on
hand.
BEAD Diamond Jigs
The
original Bridgeport lure, from Bead Tackle, Inc. Jigs are probably the most
versatile and effective fish producers ever made. They can be cast, trolled or
worked near the surface or close to the bottom where gamefish spend 90% of their
time. Here's how to get the most from your jigs:
Surface: Look for weed patches, birds diving,
jumping bait fish. Cast the jig beyond the working fish. Bring through the
school or by the weeds using sharp jerks so the jig will rise and fall as it moves through
the water.
Bottom: Fish below
working birds, around fish-attracting structure like river mouths, rips, wrecks.
Lower the jig to the bottom by free-spooling your reel. Engage the reel when the jig
hits bottom and work 2/-5' off bottom by raising and lowering the the rod tip
sharply. If bottom is free of obstructions you may try letting the jig rest on
bottom for a moment or two before jerking it up.
Bead Diamond Jigs
Hopkins No Equal Jigs
have been around a long time, and were one of the first irons folks used
for tossing at wahoo - effectively. We sell two versions, the gold and
the chrome, in two weights, both with the preferred single hooks. The
jigs have a hammered finish, great for catching light and adding to
their fish apeal. They are a simple lure, but well proven over the years
and very effective for a wide variety of gamefish. But, having said
that, they are one of the old time favorites for tossing at 'hoo.
