There are no finer swimbaits made. Big Hammer designs the best,
and they've been the ones used by most of the guys who know what
they're doing inshore and offshore, the guys that know how to fish
and always seem to bet bit best use Big Hammer. Why? Could be that
big square tail, could be the color patterns - simply the best and
most varied on the market. That's why they've been the most
imitated.
We didn't always carry Big Hammer, but we
were pretty well "hammered" by our clients to bring 'em in...which
we did many years ago. Based on demand, effectiveness and BH's
ability to stay on top of product development they've been our
number one swimbait line since we began carrying them.
SLEDGE HAMMERS
Over
the past couple years a new style of fishing
plastics for BIG Calico Bass has emerged.
There are some variations to the game, but
usually guys are fishing BIG slugs on or very
near the surface of the kelp paddies and
stringers and swimming the slug over the top,
dropping down in the holes, and sliding
through the kelp to hook the big bass that
lurk there as the apex predators. And, often
folks are rewarded with a very nice white
seabass. That's not uncommon at all. This past
year we've seen folks doing a couple other
interesting things to further refine this
productive technique. For one, many anglers
are rigging up "kelp-cutter" rigs. These are
basically smaller reels loaded with Spectra,
often 65#, topped off with a VERY SHORT leader
at times 3 feet. The Spectra is used to help
saw off the kelp as the lure becomes snagged,
or once you've got a hookup to help slice
through the kelp so the fish can be brought
back in. (Some of the white seabass guys are
doing the same, for exactly the same reason).
A further refinement has come from applying
freshwater bass style leadheads that are made
weedless. With the weedless head fishing is a
lot more enjoyable, productive, and effective.
So, the hot bassers in saltwater are
innovating techniques much like their
freshwater brothers, and coming up with the
same solutions. For our clients back in Texas
who are reading this, yes, it's a lot like
fish'n the timber. Structure is structure,
fish orient to that structure for safety and
as cover for predatory strikes on other
unsuspecting critters as dinner.
Big
Hammer's Sledge Hammer is a further refinement
of the big slug style bait. They made this
long bodied swimbait with a tail, however. The
tail provides some kick to the lure, and there
are times when that's more than a little
helpful. But, I'd say 50% of the time folks
are cutting off the tail and fishing it just
like a slug.
From Big Hammer: "In
2010 Big Hammer released the "Sledge
Hammer™". Designed to fish shallow inshore
structure where big, mean "boiler bass" call
home. The long skinny design of the 9 inch
Sledge Hammer™ swimbait imitates the large
bait fish such as smelt and mackerel that are
frequently found in these "skinny water"
areas. Basically just an elongated version of
Big Hammer's 5½ inch swimbait, the new Sledge
Hammer has proven to be much more versatile
than originally planned. It swims very well
on the sink or drop making it a good deeper
water bait as well. In addition to that it
can be rigged weedless with a wide gap hook
and used like a ripbait or "slashbait" (with
the tail intact) or as a slug (with the tail
removed)."
The
bait is part of the equation, the leadhead
another part of the program. There are a few
leadheads out there that can work for this
style of fishing, but we selected Blade
Runners Weedless Swim Bait Head. We did so for
a few reasons, in our opinion and that of a
lot of folks fishing both fresh and saltwater,
their quality is beyond reproach. The guys
make a very good product. Their eyes are the
best, the contoured heads are the nicest made
and their keeper system will help you retain
your lures, without necessitating the use of
super glue to get the bait to stay on the
hook. You can still glue your bait if you
want, but it's not essential. As you can see,
this is a great leadhead!
Leadheads are sold in two packs. Lures are
priced individually.
For
inshore surf fishing Big Hammer's Perch Grubs
are a basic part of what we fish. Corbina, bass
and surf perch will gobble 'em with gusto.
Typically guys fish these small grubs on a
leadhead or better yet a small #4 thin wire hook
with sliding egg sinker. Grubs are packed 25
per bag, and they have a length of 1
3/4 inches
@$1.99.
Another popular item for folks using soft plastic swimbaits is
Zap-a-Gap. This product works well when rigging your lure on a
leadhead. Apply a little on the base of the hook and where the lure
comes in contact with the leadhead. Give it a couple minutes to dry,
and you'll find that the lure will hold onto the hook better, be
less prone to shift position and likely last longer.
