CharkBait!
New Sabiki Sticks

We've got another CharkBait exclusive for you, a new Sabiki fishing rod that incorporates a few innovations that might interest you. Our new rods are made to fish the type of bait we typically hope to bring up on a sabiki. They are a little stouter than what's been available and are available in six and seven foot lengths. Because of that they're fine for use catching mackerel, squid, sardines or whatever gets tempted by your offerings. The rods are two-piece, separating before the grip, and they now feature a nicer wrap design in our CharkBait red. black and silver colors. They have a metal top that won't crack from your sabiki weight's contact when stowing. They can be fished with spinning or conventional reels (though conventional gear is really what they are intended for). They even have a gimbal! They use a ferrule design that makes putting 'em together easy, and taking 'em apart less of a chore.  This is an imported item of very good quality.

Why own a Sabiki stick? Good question and there is a very good answer. Sabiki's can be a royal pain in the butt or anywhere else you happen to get hooked. While Sabiki's are not terribly expensive, it's a dumb waste to use 'em once and toss 'em away because they're tangled or a hazard aboard a boat with their small hooks dangling in the way of unsuspecting folks. With a Sabiki Rod you insert your line through the rod, it has a larger opening allowing you to reel the sabiki inside the stick and even leave your weight attached to the sabiki. They're a good thing to have aboard, and they'll pay for themselves very quickly since you won't have to break out a new sabiki each time you catch bait.

New! Based upon some feedback from some long rangers and folks in Florida looking for a larger diameter and heavier test bait making stick, we're introducing our Heavyweight bait maker. The new Sabiki stick features a wider shaft to handle some of the larger size sabiki rig hooks, can deal with 2/0 size just fine. It's also a much stouter pole, larger handle area, to deal with the pressure of larger bait. If you are trying to make a bunch of bigger size macks, this is the stick for you. The lighter pole is more than adequate for most folks, but if you are dealing with larger size Sabiki rigs and larger size bait, the new CharkBait heavy duty Sabiki pole is exactly what you need.

  • Izorline Squid Jigs

izsquid.jpg (12376 bytes)These izorsqd.jpg (12556 bytes)are the mainstay for guys making "candy-bait" at the islands and long range.  The regular jig (smaller size) is the most popular locally.   Rig several of them together to catch arrow squid in meaningful quantities at Catalina Island.  The Extra Large and Jumbo are for the big ones.  This is the model for the long range guys and for folks trying to bring in the big guys.  Want some great bait for a marlin or swordie?  Catch some giant squid!  The model pictured on the right in the image is weighted.  This is the preferred piece for catching squid in strong current, or (my favorite method) rig this one at the bottom and several of the unweighted jigs above in a chain.

  • New Izorline Lighted Squid Jigs

Trick ideas flow easily from Izorline.  Izor's squid jigs are well proven producers of candy bait.  Now Izor has done something that should have been done before, integrate a light stick with a new soft body squid jig.  The jigs come with a couple lights, we stock their replacements as well.  Just insert the light through the jig, as shown. Alternatively you just poke the lightstick inside through the hole at the top of the jig. Tie on a weight or a weighted squid jig (http://www.charkbait.com/cs/csBAIT.htm) and drop her down. If you have to go deep to get 'em, this one will help  get the attention.  If the squid are floating easily, forget the light stick, just drop one over the side.  The soft body can be a plus, arrow squid like to cuddle up to something soft when they're in an amorous mood.  So, get jiggy, get all jigged up, the squid and seabass are coming!

If our favorite Laker-girl Beth can catch a white seabass you can too!  But, you're going to increase your odds if you have the squirts aboard your boat.

  • Ahi Squid Rigs

The folks from Ahi offer several very nice squid catching rigs, from gangion style to some BIG jigs for Humbolt or Baja giants.  All are luminous, all offer large barbless hooks and are made with attention to quality and value.  The first item offered is a multi-hook gangion style jig.  They're wonderful for Arrow squid, for 6 inch squirts.

Ahi recently introduced a very unique product, one we're sure no one in your neighborhood owns.  For folks traveling where the really big squid reside, like Baja, we've got something that's going to make your eyes bug out just like Beth's do when she finds a box of See's candy on my desk...  If you're targeting 20# plus squid, this is a great jig.

This is a MONDO size squid jig, over one foot long, luminious, lots of hooks for grabbing these tasty cephalopods. You can get an idea of the size, the coin next to the jig is a quarter.  This is a very big squid jig, a bit over one foot in length.  Catch a giant squid on a jig like this and you'll be making calimari steaks not little rings!  Heck, you could end up making a ring big enough to put a basketball through!  These are GIANT squid jigs for GIANT squids.

Giant ProMar Squid Jigs

The Giant Squid have come into our waters in force this past week (2/4/10). BIG THINGS, up to 40# plus Humbolt Squid, eating everything...and in turn, being eaten by our local anglers. So, the big squid jigs are much in demand all along the So.Cal. coast. The jigs we're offering here are the one's I'd recommend for folks traveling into Baja, fishing Los Arenas on the other side of La Paz. You need the bigger jigs, and these are the ones most favored. The big 24 ouncer is something we've offered for a few years, but ProMar added a very nice 16 ouncer to the mix. This one is easier to store, still has the larger hooks necessary and greater weight required to get you down to the big ones. If you like calamari this is the time to get out there, and we're not talking little munchkin calamari, we're talking calamari donuts and calamari steaks. (Pictured below, Paul from our shop with a little squirt) (And, if you're not into eating Calamari yourself, might I also suggest that there's no better swordfish bait than a big squirt. Same story for big tuna fished off the kite, Humbolts are good food! So, go catch some and put 'em in the freezer...)

  • YoZuri Squid Jigs

owner4.jpg (16556 bytes)These squid jigs are the best looking and best producing squid catchers you'll find.   The best way to use them is to rig two or three ahead of a 2-3 ounce torpedo sinker.  You'll fill up quickly, especially when you also put out the Optronics light (shown below).  The jigs are available in two sizes (the smaller size displayed in the foreground), and three colors. These jigs are sometimes hard even for us to come by.  We try to maintain a good inventory, but they are a hard-to-get piece once we get a run of someone ordering a dozen...  We also sometimes get these jigs in different colors.  Right now we have them in green.  If you'd like that option just make mention on the order form.

  • Strike Master Squid Catcher

SQUIDCATCHER.jpg (40390 bytes)A couple years ago ago we had a guest speaker at the shop.  Jeff Marsilio skipper of the Old No.7 and also a commercial squid fisherman when the charters aren't booked gave us the low-down on fishing white seabass and making squid.  He introduced us to a new product which he discusses on the video we made of his presentation (see the Fishermen's Journal).  It took us a few weeks to get the product here, and it's something you're going to want if you are in water's posses squid, the things we call "candy bait."  There's no better bait in the sea, certainly no better bait for white seabass.  If you fish from a private boat and target the big croakers, buy a couple of these catcher rigs and a good underwater bait-light.  You'll find the combination invaluable.

Frenzy

Frenzy Big Game Tackle makes some very nice sabiki rigs as well as some terrific lures.  The company field tests everything, so you can be assured their gear is well tested on the water and made to perform and last.  They also represent a very good value. Their sabiki rigs have a few unique things going for them.  Their standard fish skin rigs use red hooks, a color prefered by many since that's the first color to wash out at depth. They also make a dandy shrimp-fly style sabiki that really attracts some attention from larger baitfish.

Owner Bait Rigs
Owner's Sabiki Rigs have multiple bait catching lures rigged to a main line.  They are great for catching sardines, mackerel, herring and other baitfish.  These are an essential for any long range trip, and work their magic for us local guys too.

We're stocking several varieties of Owner Sabiki rigs.  Some are very suitable for making mackerel, what you generally want to have for the larger tuna on a long range trip.  These are the squid imitations with the larger skirts.  As well, some of the larger size "non-rubber" versions also do very well, particularly the gold colored hair sabikis (#5528).  For smaller bait, smelt, sardine... the smaller profile (5536) variety is the way to go.

  • PLine Sabiki
    Long Range Bait Catchers

PLineSabiki.jpg (18379 bytes)PLine recently came out with some very innovative and economical bait catching rigs. They both feature barbless hooks for easy "off loading." They're both multi-colored, lightly weighted, mylar loaded, mini-squids.  They'll catch your bait...economically! If you're a private boater in need of making some macks for bait, a sharker, or a long range angler, you'll appreciate the quality and the design of these dandy micro-squid sabikis. Rigged on 20# mono. They work great for catching mackerel and other large bait.

P-Line also has a larger size upgrade Mini Minnow Sabiki well worth considering. This is a rather unique design, larger, more of a mackerel size bait. It's rigged on high quality fluorocarbon leader, with red hooks. There are two sizes, the smaller coming 4 on a line with #1 hooks, the larger 2 up rigged on #4 size hooks. The small lures have big beady eyes and offer lots of bright reflective mylar in their skirt. The bodies are two tone, the small ones are a tad under 2 inches, the larger ones about 2 1/4."

  • Ahi Sabiki Rigs

It takes a lot to get a guy excited about a bait catching rig.  Usually it's just one more thing to bring on the boat. I've got to give the Ahi rigs their due, they're a great rig.  All Ahi Sabiki rigs are produced from only the highest quality components.  They feature a ball bearing and crane swivels, designed to minimize line kinds and twist.  You'll get more use from these rigs than others, you'll take care of them as you would a valued lure.  You won't toss 'em in the trash after one use.  They are equipped with sharp, high quality hooks, hand tied to super strong nylon chip leader material.  The rigs are enhanced with green glow and red flash beads. Each rig included six hooks, differing line weight between main and branch lines.

One of the hassles some folks experience in using a sabiki is what to do with it after you've used it to make bait. They don't lend themselves to being repackaged too well, with several hooks six feet or so of mainline plus the droppers. Also, it takes time to rig and put away, and then you might not have one handy when the bait does pop up again. The Ahi rig stows the sabiki inside the rod! Over the past couple years several Sabiki rods have come on the market, and again ProMar/Ahi came up with some improvements over what has been available. Again stowing the sabiki rig, and the rod is an issue for private boaters as well as long range fishermen. The Ahi design is multi-piece (3 to be exact). It's also a little longer, helping to get the rig away from the boat, and other angler's tangles. The rod also features a gimble (with cap) to aid in use. For use with conventional reels. Please note, the picture above is not entirely accurate. The Sabiki rod does not have an aluminum reel seat.

Bait Motels

ProMar Bait Motels

Have you ever returned to the dock with a bunch of great bait, only to feed the birds?  Some folks discovered that you can toughen up and "cure" your bait better, save a few dollars by re-using baitfish.  Even better, you can make some smelt at the dock and keep 'em in the bait motel for later use.  Also, for folks traveling to Catalina or San Clemente for an overnighter (or any destination for that matter). Why run the risk of draining your battery by running a bait pump all night long?  Don't do it, just transfer your bait to a small motel for the evening.  The bait motels are quality constructed for extended use.  They're great for the dock and for use aboard your boat while at sea.

Years ago Carl Newell came out with a funny little plastic contraption for organizing leader or sabiki bait catching rigs.  We hadn't seen 'em for years.  But, then one day we asked a stupid question.  We got a smart answer.

CharkBait is proud to present Carl Newell's Tanglefree Pocket Leader Pack! They never went away, they were just tucked away back at Carl Newell Manufacturing's plant. Here's why you want 'em: if you make your own bait, use sabiki rigs, you end the process with a choice.  How do you dispose of the hook rig safely, or better yet, how do you put it away safely and conveniently for future use.  The Tanglefree is a device for wrapping up your rigs.  The thing works great and will probably pay for itself in non-discarded bait rigs within a week's time. Simple, effective, kind of like Carl's reels in my estimation. Functional brilliance, Carl Newell is right up there with Edison in terms impacting mankind* with an innovation or invention...* This is just one more example of the simple creativity and functional brilliance possessed by Carl Newell. Buy one for your tackle box, buy one for your desk.  You can take it out every once in a while when you're stressed from the complexities of life.  You'll relieve anxieties and uncertainties when you stare at your Tanglefree, study it's detailed instructions, and revel in its simplicity.  You'll find yourself exclaiming, "f'n brilliant little bugger."

Bait Attracting Lights
from Brinkman and Optronics

The key to catching white seabass is the possession of "Candy Bait" also known as squid, the makings of calamari to us human-types.  Every type of fish in the sea relishes feeding on squid, there's no better bait.  While you can sometimes buy your bait, the best way to go is to make your own when the squid are available, and they've been available here off Southern California all along our coast.  We're offering five different styles of lights this week. All come with battery clips, and they're submersible. The Optronix lights pictured above are standbys, used for many years here.  They use a halogen light.  The light pictured in the middle above is cooled by water.  It also features a built in rattle.  The lights on either side of it use a sealed bulb, for better long term reliability. The newest light from Optronix is pictured on the left above.  It offers a longer 20' power cord, sealed halogen bulb and three different lenses.  The green color lens should be particularly favored for floating bait.  The other Optronix light pictured center offer 15' cord and share 300,000 candlepower illumination.  The Q-Beam Starfire II light pictured to the right offers 250,000 candlepower and is a sealed system unlike the Night Blaster.  It has 10' of cord with battery terminal clips.

The two lights pictured left are florescent tube lights that feature a green illumination.  This color has been proven to attract both gamefish and bait.  Many of the local six-pack boats (like Bongos) make use of a very similar light (which they pay $100 and more for).  This light is most often used with a 5 or 6 ounce sinker to put it down into the water (10 oz for the larger magnum model).  The green glowing light produces an effect similar to a full moon's glow.   All of these lights work very well, and are well worth their cost.  If you really want to give yourself the edge, use either of the halogen lights along with the florescent tube.  The combination will really help bring in the bait.

  • Micro Lights

Fishing at night, or going down deep?  Try adding a Mini Light to your rig, you just might attract the right kind of attention.  With the lights you will increase the visibility of your bait or lure to attract fish more quickly.   It attaches easily to line in front of the bait or lure.  You'll find other uses: attaching to the rod as a strike indicator at night, rigging in front of a drift bait, inserting into one into a Basstrix lure to make your bait more visible at night or in discolored or deep water.

New Product:

Before we get into the specials, there's a new product from Hydro Glow I wanted to bring to your attention. As a lot of guys know, their 4 foot florescent-type light is the best product on the market for bringing in the bait. Folks here use 'em for attracting squid to feed the hoped for white seabass, but there are a lot of other great reasons to use 'em. Hydro Glow recently created a couple new lights that are perfect for private boaters, their new 2' and 1' LED light. There are some benefits with the new lights that should appeal to a lot of folks. Since they are basically solid state, they can deal with natural abuse that's likely to occur on most boats, they can deal better with some bumping around that a tube-style light. The lights also have a proprietary coating on their bright LED's to help absorb shock and make them waterproof for use in the water and added durability for years of hard use. The LED's are also darn efficient, drawing just 1/2 to 1 amp of juice! For the private boater, these may be exactly what you have been wanting to keep on the boat - and use!
