Sunscreen?

Several years ago I had a chunk of skin, down to the bone, scrapped off my head. Had a few spots burned/frozen off too. Skin cancer is no joke, it's serious stuff. If you spend enough time outdoors you know the effects of too much sun all too well. A sunburn carries a cost years down the road. People die from this stuff. A good sunscreen is a necessary part of our days on the water, protective clothing and hats are also basic equipment for any angler. Most sunscreens that I've used were imperfect for the active lifestyle of fishing, they can all be great for simply lying on a beach. But, when you combine sweating, water spray...they wash off or get in your eyes causing temporary blindness. I found something that works better.

Several years ago I discovered SOL sunscreen products while visiting ICAST, 2005 or so. Hands down the best stuff I'd come across. Dealt with harsh conditions well, truly protected, dealt with water and sweat. I found another product that I'm also impressed with, Dr. Dan's SunBlock SPF30. The Doc's products are good ones too, a bit different than SOL, both are good and both have their place. Came across Dr. Dan's at ICAST 2015. Seems I'm always finding new Sunscreen products at ICAST. Some back at the shop assume (incorrectly) that sunscreen booths must all have flocks or great looking gals who run up and rub lotion on all the grumpy guys that walk past...leading to an inordinate amount of orders. Well, let me say that it ain't true at all. The model types are working the sunglasses booths. That's a fact. So, let me say directly the reason I look at this stuff is because I've been cut, frozen, scrapped and sutured as much as I care to be as a result of over exposure to the sun. That's the truth and the background. Dr. Dan's is my newest favorite sunscreen product. The Dr. Dan product is similar to the SOL products offered next section. Both are excellent, work far better than sunscreens you get at the market or department store. They stay on you, don't tear up your eyes and last through sweat and spray. By comparison, I'd say the Dr's. products feel and look like they have a bit more zinc and a dryer feel than the SOL sunscreens. I'll have a better take on this in a couple months after some long range fishing, can do a direct comparison then. It's my opinion after messing with 'em both here at the beach that I'd prefer SOL's lotion under most conditions, (to me a lotion is simple to use, haven't quite adapted to the stick yet) but when it's oppressive, you know the really bright days that just keep burning, the good doctors product should prove the go to in the most extreme conditions. Additionally, the stick fits easily in a tackle box and doesn't start flowing when it gets hot. You can dab on more as needed, easily. Very convenient and probably an even better level of protection. (that's my simple personal opinion, may revise it after using the product longer). But, I will say Dr.Dan's is what goes on my noggin now...the top of my head gets the stick, regardless of the weather or hat.  Both are very good product lines, but they have their differences. Two Dr. Dan's items we're representing, their protective SunStick and lip balm.

Sol Sunscreen

This a a bit outside the norm for our fishing related offerings, but it is something important to anyone spending a lot of time on the water. Sunscreen is a necessary thing. I've had my bouts with the vet, cutting-out and burning-off skin cancers. Spend enough time outdoors and you'll also have your doc-time. At the ICAST show in July '07 I came across a new type of sunscreen that's designed for our use. This is no BS line, repackaging the same old stuff isn't what Sol's Bluewater product is about. The stuff works very well (SPF36), it stays on LONGER, it DOESN'T BURN YOUR EYES (even when directly applied to your eyelid! - I've been doing that at the shop to demonstrate to clients...) and it's easy to use. In the past few years I've been pretty religious about wearing sunscreen. Unfortunately as soon as I begin to sweat, the sunscreen moves from my forehead into my eyes and they burn, water, and I'm fish'n by feel instead of sight. This Sol stuff really works, does not burn your eyes and stay's put! It's the best product of it's type I've ever used. It's not Coppertone or Banana Boat, it's a unique product made for what we do.

Hats - the first line of defense...and a heck of a fashion statement!

Now, for a bit of a confession, I'm a hat ho...meaning that I'm almost always wearing a hat. The hats above are of great quality, perhaps too good a quality for my personal tastes. And, the style for me is off the mark, I like a lower crown hat that fits on my head with "no poofiness." Form Fit hats are a bit too constrictive on my cranium, too. And, lastly, I'm not looking for fancy "dress" hats...except when I take my wife out to dinner on our date-night and even then my "dress" hat is simply a newer model hat that hasn't been put through too much sweat and grime. Back to fashion design...I like a lower crown hat, so here's that option for those of us less into fashion and more into basic head covering.

Shucks, what a full service institution we've become. First health warnings and solutions, fashion for fishermen, and next up cosmetic and odious enhancements for the angler! Amazing.

De-Fishing soap is a product I frankly would never use myself, preferring to smell like bait when I'm fishing and returning home with the same olfactory obnoxiousness just so the wifeski has no doubts about what I've been up to. But, there are many more civilized anglers than I, who either don't want to smell like bait/fish, or simply don't want to smell like anything (in the hope that the lack of stench will make the fish less wary of their lure or other offering.) It is for these folks that De-Fishing Soap was produced. (Hope you don't mind the humor. Reality is that this is the best product of it's type available.)

From the manufacturer:

Lingering odors on hands from handling fish and bait is a problem. Most anglers don't care for persistent fishy smells at social functions, the office, or in the days following fishing trips. Smelly hands rub off on home and auto upholstery and linger for weeks.

De-Fishing Soap is specially formulated to eliminate fish and bait odors; just lather up, scrub (warm water and scrub brush is best), rinse, and repeat.

De-Fishing Soap is guaranteed to remove even the most persistent smells including: anchovy, bass, catfish, carp, halibut, herring, mackerel, salmon, shrimp, squid, trout, yellowtail, tuna, and more.

Nothing Compares!

Anglers have tried everything to remove stubborn fish smells!

* Raw lemon juice (too acidic and doesn't work well)

* Bleach (too caustic and doesn't work well)

* Salt (too harsh and doesn't work well)

* Ordinary hand soaps (simply do not work despite repeated scrubbings)

* Stainless steel bars such as used in restaurant kitchens (expensive, inconvenient, and do not work well).

De-Fishing Soap is a convenient way to eliminate fish and bait odors from hands!

How it works:

De-Fishing Soap is specially formulated to lift odors from hands and neutralize them. De-Fishing Soap does not mask odors, it completely eliminates them.

Nothing else works like De-Fishing Soap:

* De-Fishing Soap works on all fresh and saltwater fish and bait, guaranteed!

* Use De-Fishing Soap in saltwater or fresh water (slightly lower lather in saltwater).

* De-Fishing Soap has a low Ph value and is very gentle on hands.

* Just lather up, scrub (warm water and scrub brush is best), rinse, and repeat.

De-Fishing Soap is completely biodegradable. It is made in the USA with all natural products. No animal products used.
