0311a.jpg (4326 bytes)Strike Master has been not so quietly carving out a reputation as an innovative manufacturer of proven fish catching products.  It wasn't too long ago that they simply produced finished lead, for jig heads, weights...  They began evolving into the lure part of the tackle business, introducing hugely successful products like the Bait-O-Matic (well known for taking sharks, wahoo and marlin).  The next area Strike Master developed, included innovative updates on the proven Cedar Plug, and now they've come out with the nicest little jig heads you can imagine.  Strike Master is a family owned business, successfully run by two brothers.  They are a creative and astute couple of guys, anticipate even more fish catching innovations from this excellent Southern California manufacturer in time to come.  The parent firm's name is LeadMasters, and as you would think, they use lead in most all of their products.

Mini Bait-o-Matic

Our East Coast clients may be familiar with this lure, but for our guys on the Left Coast you've probably only encountered the big brother Bait-o-Matic which is more commonly used for sharks and wahoo. The smaller lure does some similar things to the big ones, its heavy chrome finished head shape and weight are designed to provide depth. It's a great bait to use on the troll, especially for private boaters trying to get more lines in the water from a crowded stern. The lure will give you depth, and that's a good thing when you're trying to cover some water and bring up fish from deeper water. It's also pretty common for the larger fish to be deeper within the school. So, you've got a few reasons to consider adding these guys to your lure kit. The lures run about 5.5 inches in length and weight about 3 ounces.

Strike Master Tuna Jet!

Here's a trick variation on what has become a tried and true theme. Cedar plugs are darn effective. Strike Master hit a great balance with their new Tuna Jet Plug. It's very similar to a cedar plug in design, a cigar shaped trolling lure. But, this one's made from metal, has jets to produce a big bubble trail, and comes double rigged. They just came on the market, and I'd bet they will prove effective. You be the guinea pig on this one and try one out. Get back to us with your results and pictures. Cedar Plugs

Strike Master produces some the nicest painted Cedar Plugs on the market. Their finish is very well detailed, and lasts long enough to earn it's value.  While I was slow in the conversion to painted cedar plugs (feeling that it's really a reaction strike), I was rudely awakened to the fact that there are times when color does indeed make a difference.   For instance while albacore fishing recently, the green 4" plug shown below slayed 'em while the unpainted jig did not.  I still am convinced that you don't have to have a painted Cedar Plug to catch a tuna, but I have to admit that there are some days color certainly does make a difference.

The following images are the four inch Cedar Plug (rigged).  The unpainted 4" plug is available both rigged and unrigged.  All of the painted lures below are available in both 4" and 6" variants.

The Chain Reaction

The Chain Reaction is a great new product.  It features three hoochies followed by a trailer rigged on fluorocarbon.  It was designed by Capt. Mark Wisch, a well know Huntington Beach charter skipper and local fishing resource.  This simple product skitters along the surface, creating the illusion of a school of small baitfish.  It does attract attention.  At only $12.99 it's sure to attract more than it's fair share of fishermen's attention, and that's likely the most productive $10 a guy can spend in the tackle business. Trust me, this lure will take tuna.  Albacore will eat it with gusto!

Click to see color codeThe manufacturer of the Infamous Bait-O-Matic, produces an incredible amount of fishing gear.   I'm gradually broadening my mix of products from this excellent Southern California manufacturer.  They've just introduced the "cadilac of jig heads".  These minnow style jig heads, for use with soft bodied swim baits, are incredible.  They are the nicest leadheads you will find, anywhere for any amount of $.  The things are gorgeous.

Last year's tuna run was pretty interesting.  Lot's of anglers discovered the merits of fishing Plastics on the Slide.  It produced a lot of fish, often larger fish since the bait presentation was deeper.  The only  downside was that the hooks made for catching 10-15 lb. fish could have some issues with 30# albacore, especially when fished on heavier lines.  Leadheads for tuna require a lot more strength than the bass-style product.  So, Strike Master came up with an albie strength hook just for the "sliders".  The bigger hook rig is only available with the unpainted head, as shown below.

Similar to the jigs above, the folks at StrikeMaster also make 'em with a black nickel finish hook. These hooks do great in saltwater, last a long time before corrosion raises it's ugly head. They are great for calico bass, school size albies too. They are not suitable for larger gamefish in the 30-50# class, but work great for anything 20#'s or down. Packed 2 per box.

Wahoo Bomb

The pictures just don't do these lures justice, with their super flashy tinsel, hammered leaf spinner, it's one attention getting lure.  And, that's just what the wahoo like!  These lures are appropriately rigged for their quarry, with wire.   The hook is rigged close to the heavy head on it's own swivel - good idea for wahoo.   The Wahoo Bomb is another well planned product, from a very innovative manufacturer.  This lure works effectively trolled or cast.  It's an excellent value at only $9.99

bom.jpg (36752 bytes)These excellent lures are a preferred trolling lure for wahoo and thresher sharks, big thresher sharks. A mackerel or strip-bait usually is attached to a front hook, the rear hook usually left to swing free - though this is far from required. (picture left: bottom to top, Pink Lady 16 oz, Pyro - rigged 9 oz, Sable P/B 16 oz)The BOM may be trolled at a rapid pace or slowed way down, it's stable at speeds well over 5 knots. The design of the heavy lead head digs the lure deep. Many successful anglers will run one or more of these big lures off a downrigger as well as straight off the stern. It's a very successful thresher technique. Don't think that these lures only catch sharks, they've also produced many other catches for anglers, like tuna, wahoo and marlin. It's one of the most effective wahoo lures available.   I'm stocking the Bait-O-Matics in several new  colors, two sizes, with or without rigging. Rigged lures feature two big 10/0 hooks on 250 lb. 49 strand cable. 

New this season is the luminescent model of the Bait-O-Matic.  For folks going deeper for threshers this is going to be a preferred lure.
