CharkBait's Favorite Swordfish AND Bait Lights

I'd like to first suggest folks read over the PDF link to an article from Oceanus relating some of the research information gained from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, "Shedding Light on Light in the Ocean." A few minutes read will help explain how light changes with depth, and ultimately why lights can be of benefit for those of us fishing saltwater, at depth and shallower, too. I was presented this informative article by the kind folks at ESCA - and the findings helped shape and reinforce their innovative product.

ESCA
I first came across this product at ICAST several years ago. I was very much interested, but at that point there was no way for me to bring the piece into this country. They're based in Norway, and it would have been a pain in the keester to import 'em. I've been following them ever since, and fishing the sample they provided me. They also had some growing to do, earn their USA patent... We are now pleased to be able to offer this unique product to our clients. The Esca fish attractor utilizes light and electro-magnetic influences to attract gamefish. It can improve the performance of all lures, imitates natures own lure lights, and adds life to lures and bait. While the piece can be used as a lure, it truly shines best by treating it as an attractor.  Our first batch of Esca's will have a treble hook attached, but in the future the hook will go away. Probably half or more folks who purchase these devices will discard the hook anyway and rig them to their own preference based upon specific application.

There are four different styles/types of Esca attractors. The devices emit either green or blue light, and that light is either a constant fade or blinking/strobe. They are powered by saltwater itself, and will work for up to 100 hours of fishing time - no batteries involved. The best use for the Esca device is to use them as an add-on to your existing lures. They have proven very successful for folks targeting swordfish, all types of deeper water rockfish, and most recently billfish. (They were used in several tournaments last year to great effect) The Esca replicates the wavelength, intensity and frequency of light emitted by different types of fish and plankton - the manufacturer refers to this as the "pulse of life!" They also create an electromagnetic field that triggers the hunting instincts in fish. Fish will bite, and bite harder! The Esca will improve the visibility of your lures and tackle, improving your odds at getting bit.

Esca attractors weigh 7 grams. They can be used by themselves as a small jig, but they are really best used together with spinners, jigs, iron, and bait. You can rig them inside soft bodied squid skirts, inline, with deep diving lures and with trolling lures. Esca on You-Tube Esca on You-Tube

HYDRO GLOW lights are the preferred night light for attracting bait, baitfish, squid, and predatory fish that feed on these critters. The Hydro Glow lights are the best available for private boaters, the most recommended fish attracting lights on the market, and they have been for many years. They are not the least expensive, but when the full package is considered, they represent a very worthwhile investment in fish catching technology.

The Hydro Glow Fish Lights patented design utilizes the green light technology for improving your fishing activities during the night-time hours. The light is designed to vertically submerge with only the top 3 to 5 inches of the light above the water level. This insures the entire illumination of the light is in the water where to fish are, not the bugs!!.

The luminating effect of the green light in water is far superior to other colors of light, that's what the commercial swordfish guys use, that's what many professional guides employ, that's also what we private boaters should be using. It's been reported that green allows the light to penetrate farther and attract more life. The superior light penetration and design does several things; virtually 100% of the light is submerged in the water, not floating on the surface; the area affected by the light is much larger with a 360 degree range; the larger area affected by the light attracts more bait fish as well as game fish to your targeted area.

The lights are complete package, shipped with a nice storage case to protect your investment. The lights come with alligator clips, but you can also simply add the lights to your boat's 12 volt electrical system if you are inclined. Hydro Glow lights are made to last, made to absorb some punishment and keep on working for years. They are flat out worth the money in my opinion.

Bait Attracting Lights
from Brinkman and Optronics

The key to catching white seabass is the possession of "Candy Bait" also known as squid, the makings of calamari to us human-types.  Every type of fish in the sea relishes feeding on squid, there's no better bait.  While you can sometimes buy your bait, the best way to go is to make your own when the squid are available, and they've been available here off Southern California all along our coast.  We're offering five different styles of lights this week. All come with battery clips, and they're submersible. The Optronix lights pictured above are standbys, used for many years here.  They use a halogen light.  The light pictured in the middle above is cooled by water.  It also features a built in rattle.  The lights on either side of it use a sealed bulb, for better long term reliability. The newest light from Optronix is pictured on the left above.  It offers a longer 20' power cord, sealed halogen bulb and three different lenses.  The green color lens should be particularly favored for floating bait.  The other Optronix light pictured center offer 15' cord and share 300,000 candlepower illumination.  The Q-Beam Starfire II light pictured to the right offers 250,000 candlepower and is a sealed system unlike the Night Blaster.  It has 10' of cord with battery terminal clips.

The two lights pictured left are florescent tube lights that feature a green illumination.  This color has been proven to attract both gamefish and bait.  Many of the local six-pack boats (like Bongos) make use of a very similar light (which they pay $100 and more for).  This light is most often used with a 5 or 6 ounce sinker to put it down into the water (10 oz for the larger magnum model).  The green glowing light produces an effect similar to a full moon's glow.   All of these lights work very well, and are well worth their cost.  If you really want to give yourself the edge, use either of the halogen lights along with the florescent tube.  The combination will really help bring in the bait.

Lindgren Pittman

We've been searching out more products for night fishing, specifically targeting swordfish.  I turned to some guys who know the fishery here, as well as in Florida and Hawaii.  I talked to both sportfish guys and commercial long-liners.  Like the practice of long lining or not, the folks who spend the most time focused hunting the quarry know it best.

Reusable Deepwater Electralume, the finest underwater fish attracting light on the market. These new lights are not cheap, they are the best and most economical (from a long term use standpoint) underwater light on the market. The Electralume is a battery operated LED fishing light.  These are quite simply the best light of it's type on the market.  They're professional equipment from the long line industry.  Remember this day. We're the folks that introduced the Electralume to the sportfishing marketplace.  Night fishing won't ever be quite the same, night-time swordfishing won't be practiced quite the same.  I'm confident these new lights will become a standard issue tool for the guy trying to land the fish of a lifetime.

Electralumes shine five times brighter than chemical light sticks, and they can be used again and again.  Each Electralume includes 2 high-output lithium batteries that last up to 500 hours.  Plus, they've been tested to 2200 feet, and can take a beating.  The lights have been proven effective for swordfish, groupler, snapper, and halibut.  They can be used deep for daytime fishing tuna, too. The gasketed light is available in either green or blue (the two most successful colors for underwater use according to a lot of folks with a lot of hours under their belts). The lights run on two fancy lithium camera batteries (size AA) - INCLUDED.* The lights can be operated automatically (water pressure activates them at about 15 feet. The lights come with a handy "hairpin" style line clip, easy to connect, easy to take off your line.

We're also stocking the Duralite Diamond strobe lights.  These flash on and off, attracting interest from baitfish and predatory gamefish.  They are water activated, good for over 250 hours of use at depths up to 3,000 feet! They activate in water, turn off when out of the water and dry. The Diamond strobes are disposable, you can not replace their internal battery. They are available in several colors, and are another well respected commercial fishing device from Lindgren-Pitman.   Let's go catch some big, night-time predatory fish! Swordfish, big makos beware, we've got your number!

Okay, now that we have the light-thing wired let's all sing along, "You light up my life..."  Hmm, maybe not.  We've found something special again folks, be the first on your block/dock to fish 'em.  Buy a couple and clip them to your line 6-12' above your bait. Bring along a camera and send us a picture when you catch your first swordie. Want more info on the productivity of using lights while going after swordfish? Click HERE.

*Do yourself a favor and buy a rechargeable version of these batteries at your basic electronics store, and the charger, too (usually included and running about $15). The camera batteries last a long time, and quickly pay for themselves in any application you'd use AA batteries. With the rechargeable high output camera batteries you're saving some bucks and getting better performance.  Your GPS will run a lot longer, perhaps double the time. The lights will also run longer and light brighter.  They're a key part of this lighting system.

Promar Diamond Strobe

Our friends from Promar also have introduced a Diamond strobe light - very much the equal to the model posted above. It's indistinquishable, functions the same way, lasts the same length of time, but is a better value. (Both lights probably are produced by the same factory overseas). The Promar LED light will work for 300 hours of use, and can be used at depths up to 3,500 feet. It's powered by a Lithium Battery, included. We sell these lights for $7.99.

Nebo Flashlight + Laser

I'll admit, this is a strange little item for us to post on the website, but darn it's neat. This little 5 1/2 inch light is pretty incredible, and I owned one prior to offering 'em on sale here. This all aluminum light is a piece of precision, and it does some dandy things. It's O ring sealed, using three AAA batteries. it features 15 bright LED's and a laser pointer. There are three settings, 5 green LED's which provide illumination and help maintain night vision, there are also 10 very bright LED's that work with the green lights to provide a powerful beam of light, and there's even a red laser pointer. On the back of the flashlight there's even a darn compass! It's a trick little item, useful on a boat, useful around the house. I keep one in my tackle bag, and one on the truck....and there's another one somewhere at home that should be in the garage...but I think the wife took it.
