CharkBait Explorer Rods

We're very excited about this little project. It's taken us close to a year's time to bring these products to market. It's something we've felt that was needed for quite some time. Working closely with an overseas builder we have produced a travel rod like no other, something folks will certainly find useful and will broaden fishing opportunities for a lot of folks. We have produced a higher line test capable travel rod! Given the airlines making life a bit more difficult for travelers to take their gear with them to distant lands. And, given the usual lack of good gear once you arrive at distant shores, our search for something better suited to what we like to do was inevitable. We searched for a quality travel rod that was more than a repackaged freshwater bass rod made for fishing 12-20#'s. Well, we found such a rod with Okuma's Nomad series of travel rods. Dandy pieces for fishing up 20-50# lines, and a nice travel bag, too. That product gave us hope that we could produce such a piece for our clients. Well, we have, and I think the time has paid off. We have been doing some importing of our own over the past couple years. We're large enough to do so now, and that was something I used to do in a previous career, too. So we had some experience to work with.

There are three rods in this series, a 20-40# seven foot casting rod and light duty trolling rod, and two more dedicated trolling/stand-up rods, all featuring Pac Bay "uni-butt" style all aluminum aft sections. Specifically, this is a Pac Bay Channel Lock Aluminum Butt. All rods utilize this butt section, but the 20-40# model has an EVA foam ring grip on the aft and fore grip since it's intended to spend more time in a fisherman's hands rather than having primary rod holder duty. The last two rods mentioned were our first on the market, since this was where there were no competing products available, a real gap in the market in our estimation. The trolling/stand-up rods are four piece, both 6 1/2 feet in length. One is perfect for fishing 30-40# line, the other for 50-80# application. With the Pac Bay butts, they're great for trolling duty. You can drag lures, feathers, lipped divers effortlessly. All feature EVA ringed fore grips for added security and comfort. The guides are rated for Spectra, and the rod’s unique gimbaled screw together construction is extremely solid. Unlike other "ferrule" rods, these screw together within a ferrule, so they twice reinforce their strength and proper alignment of these strong and forgiving fiberglass blanks. This unique connection feature also makes it easier to take the rods apart after a long day’s fishing. If you liked Okuma's bag, you'll be thrilled with ours too! It's a dandy, and also features a zippered internal opening to conveniently hold some accessories, too!

CharkBait’s new four piece travel rods are sure to be welcomed by the serious angler looking for travel-friendly fishing rods capable of landing larger fish.  Fishing from a panga or  sportfisher? These rods are perfect for your needs. Finally there’s a serious saltwater travel rod that can stand on its own merits as a functional alternative to one-piece designs.

Since we have eliminated the "middle-man" and have these rods produced ourselves, we can offer an excellent savings to our clients. Compare the components being used, and you'll get the picture. These rods are a value, and there's nothing like them on the market in terms of dealing with larger fish and functional troll duty. Let me restate this, since I've done some homework for you. You can find some heavy tackle offshore custom travel rods, at prices of over $1000. The one's I've seen do not compare favorably to what we are offering with our own Saltwater Travel Rods, which are designed for boat use. If you travel to your fishing destinations or just like being prepared for opportunities to hop on other folks boats, our new saltwater travel rods will be favored companions on any trip offshore. Order yours now!

Ferrules - there are three basic types available.

Most light duty rods use a simple direct, blank-over-blank design. One hollow piece fits into the other hollow section, lengthening the rod in sections with differing diameter. For strength, it's best to have the tip sections going over the base pieces of the rod (tip over butt) rather than skinnier sections fitting into the larger sections (tip into butt). We use this connecting style for our multi-piece light line and surf-casting rods, our new Inshore Explorer.

We use a European Spigot Ferrule design on our 2 moderate line test casting/boat models, the Explorer Medium Casting rods and Surf Explorer. In this system the pieces of the rod are joined by way of a solid insert in one end section, fitting into a hollow receiving section. One potential weakness of the standard ferrule connection is strengthend since the "spigot" provides increased reinforcement at the joints of the rod.

On our heavier tackle uni-butt style boat rods we use a unique Gimbaled Ferrule system with metal caps for added security of connection and alignment of the rod. You'll find this feature on our Offshore Explorer Series of rods. These are available in three different configurations, 50-80# application, 30-40# use and a two tip version 20#-40# rod.

And, a few words from one of the lucky folks that purchased one of these innovative rods:

Hello Mark,

I'd like to start by thanking you for such a fine product.  I recently bought your two tip casting travel rod.  My son (13yrs old) and I just got back from Islamorada. I've have been fishing there with Capt Mike Basset of Born and Raised charters for many years.  A fourth generation keys guide he has seen it all.  We decided to do a little shark fishing and put the new equipment to the test.  I used your 20-30lb tip and matched the rod up with a Shimano Trinidad 30DC.  Spooled up with 30lb Andes mono and number10 wire leader.  From the get go the rod impressed us. It casted our live Jack on a 40 inch wire leader with distance and accuracy.  The largest shark we boated was a 200lb plus Bull.  The rod did not perform like a quality multi piece travel rod.  It performed as good as or even better than  a high end one piece!!!!  I have traveled extensively and have used all the best tackle I could afford. Your product is by far the best travel rod I've ever used and completely blew away Capt basset.
Tight Lines!!!, Joe Gorman

NEW MODELS ADDED!

Offshore Explorer ®   MC & MS for Casting & Light Trolling

In September 2010 we added a new model to our line of travel rods, one that took us several months to finally bring to market. The new rod is designed for 30 to 40# use, nominally marked at 30#, and is available in both SPINNING and CONVENTIONAL guides! This model is more of a casting piece since we've lightened the butt section and opted not to use the Uni-Butt. It can still be used in a rod holder, since it incorporates a "slick-butt" feature. Another change we've made on the new rods is the ferrule system. On the 30# traveler we're using a "Spigot Ferrule" system. One note, with this European style connection there's some intended spacing between the rod sections. Do NOT try to push the pieces together, you want a firm connection but you do NOT want them pushed together so tightly that you can't pull them apart. The use of the Spigot Ferrule allows for true one-piece feel, and there's reinforcement between the sections. For casting duty, this is an improved design. You can see how the system works in the image, there's a connecting solid piece which is inserted within the lighter section of the rod which helps provide strength as well as "feel."

For most of us fishing distant destinations, this is the right balance of casting and lighter duty trolling rod to own. It's perfect for panga fishing.

NEW MODELS ADDED!

Inshore Explorer ®  for Casting

The 3 models of Inshore Explorer provide the traveling fisherman different actions for different line tests. All models are three piece 7'6", using light and strong graphite blanks, quality cork handles for light weight and trigger grips on the conventional guide rods. These rods are VERY light and sensitive. Guides are made to handle both Spectra and monofilament lines. You have 3 choices in line test use on these excellent rods, with nominal ratings of 12#, 15# and 20# application. In the past, there have been a couple travel rods covering the lighter line tests similar to these (but shorter in length) from Penn International. They ranged from $199 to $139 in price, but could not be produced at those prices and were discontinued by Penn. Those rods have been off the market for a few years now, but they provided a base for the design of our series of rods. Ours are longer, lighter, and since there is no middleman in the process, no distributor markup, ours are a much better value. Ours are also much better looking! These rods are a very good value at $129 complete with a very nice storage/travel tube. However, we're doing this one better for this weeks installment of the Weekly Specials by offering the rods at $99 - including shipping!

* After having these rods on the market for over a year's time I can provide some use reports. They have performed VERY well for most clients. However, we have had some that did not match the application a very few clients were seeking. LET ME SAY CLEARLY, THESE ARE INSHORE LIGHT ACTION RODS! Where we have had failure we have noted MISUSE. I had a client using the rod in Alaska running off a downrigger with substantial stress and load. That is NOT what this rod was intended to do, it's a casting stick, not a downrigger rod. This fellow broke the rod on his second day fishing...from a downrigger! We also had a client break his rod while fishing on a party boat in Northern California. In that case the rod broke after catching 11 fish, including SEVEN LING COD! Again, that's not what the inshore rods were made to do. They were made for light action inshore fishing, CASTING use, and in that application they have performed very well. They are not something you want to go and catch 35# redfish on, though the picture right shows that this can be accomplished in the hands of an angler than knows what he's doing. But, please do understand that if you are targeting larger game (by that I mean fish of 10# and greater) this is not the stick I'd suggest. It's an inshore rod that will put a smile on your face fishing bass, and I'd stick to 5# and down quarry. Do NOT high-stick this or any other saltwater oriented rod. That's a sure way to break anything, and trust me, I've had clients break $500 Calstar one piece trolling rods by that sort of misuse. Used properly these are excellent rods that will provide years of service. But, you should take stock of your particular application and if a more heavy duty rod is called for, then go with our 30# casting rod - that would have been a much better match for the downrigger fisherman I described earlier.

Finally made it to the Bahamas to do some bone fishing. I bought your Inshore Explorer 12 lb travel rod and used Spectra 12lb line! This outfit worked great! Landed 8 bone fish my first time out ever with the guide. Thanks for providing such great products.
Keith Freese

I ordered a 15lb spinning travel rod from you folks for a trip to Tobago last November. I was pleased when it arrived, but after fishing it ….the quality and performance of this rod were fantastic! I was primarily on a sailboat cruise, but was able to fish from the boat, a kayak, and shoreline. Caught barracuda, eye jacks, mullet, mutton snapper, houndfish, and even missed a few tarpon hits, and had an absolute ball. The flex offered me the ability to cast small lures, but also power fish away from mangroves and rocks. The protective case it came in was quality too, could carry on and was well protected. Thanks for making and shipping a quality product. Will used your web store in the future! Even though it is clear across the country!!

Thanks a bunch,

WARRANTY:

Please note,  Inshore Explorers are intended for casting duty with lighter lines. They are not made for downrigger use in Alaska, for casting 6 ounce lead or vertical jigging for rock fish off a party boat... They are not intended for "high sticking" meaning putting a vertical load on the rod. They are made to have an arc when fighting a fish, not going vertical or beyond. When used properly, these rods will provide decades of use. When used improperly you can break the piece. We warranty against manufacturers defect, and that's not something we've seen come back. The other things mentioned above reference the use some guys have put them through (downriggers...in Alaska no less) and that is mis-use.  The only way to support a warranty against that sort of abuse is to jack up the price you pay. Rather than do that we'll offer the following support to folks who might break a rod through mis-use (and I guarantee you we can tell upon inspection it that's the case). We will replace any broken part, (OR THE ENTIRE ROD AT OUR DISCRETION) if the break is due to manufacturer's defect. Otherwise, we will offer an accommodation replacement price of 1/2 the retail sales price of the rod. Return shipping is at the expense of the user.

Surf Explorer ®  for Casting

Our Surf Explorer has been updated for 2012. We've expanded the line to three different line tests, an 8-12#, 15-20# and 25-30# class for both spinning and conventional reel use. This is a very light and exotic travel rod for surf fishing enthusiasts. Certainly it has additional applications, but it's made for walking the beach and opportunistic fishing. The rod is a four piece design, using the European Spigot ferrule connections. It's 2.7 meters in length, almost 9 feet, and now comes in a hard case for safe transport and storage. The rod can handle lure weights of 20-100 grams. It's graphite and fiberglass constructed for lightness, sensitivity and long term use. The guides are lightweight, but capable of handling Spectra lines. The handle section is a bit long, in keeping with it's intended application, and you can adjust the positioning of your reel to optimize balance - easily moving the reel forward or back on the rod. It's parabolic action allows it to fish lighter and heavier and still "feel" right, and now you have more choices for the test being fished with the additional light and medium action rods.

Hey Mark, I just thought I should show you what I caught down in Rancho on my new Surf Explorer. Thanks again, Max

I wanted to let all the staff at Charkbait know that I received my Surf Explorer travel rod today and I am happier than a kid in a candy store. This rod is top notch in quality as far as construction, ease of assembly, and amazingly light which will be very nice for long days of casting lures and jigs for stripers here in Oklahoma.  This rod looks sleek and sporty with the anodized red aluminum accents and the carbon fiber on the reel seat and is perfect match for my Abu Garcia 6500 C3 reel. The rod tube is really cool as well with the Charkbait logo embroidered on the front. I cannot think of enough words to describe how nice this rod is. In fact a coworker of mine saw me open the rod package today and even commented on how nice the rod looked and he is not even an avid fisherman. I have owned a lot of different fishing rods in my life and would rank this in the top 5 overall. Some of the rods I have owned have been Falcon, G Loomis, Daiwa, and Bass pro-Offshore angler-ocean master. This Charkbait rod is by far one of the best, and I will definitely tell all my angler friends in Oklahoma about your amazing products and recommend that they purchase from Charkbait. I rate my ordering experience, top notch as well. Customer service was amazing in getting my ship to address corrected promptly so as not to affect the delivery date. I look forward to future business with Charkbait.

 Thank you very much

Leeana,   Please forward this to your boss.
This morning I took the Surf Explorer down to my “test site”.  I saddled up with an Abu 6600C5 Mag X holding 14# Suffix Siege and  a 75g egg sinker, used a common fishing rig. (You folks would call it a “Carolina rig”).  I just wanted to see how the rod casted and it was much more than I expected.  I’m an average caster who’s getting older but even with  an 9 mph wind in my face I was averaging a measured 270’  the longest was 291'.  Not too shabby for me and an 8’75” rod. I seldom have to cast that far but it’s nice to have the confidence that I can do it if needed.   If I used braid I could have squeezed out the extra feet for an even 100 yards.  The closest rod I own in comparison is a St.Croix, PSRC86M2, rated 1/2-2 oz. and I felt the Surf Explorer was lighter and  easier to work with over a 2 hour period of constant casting.  The sensitivity of the  four section rod was also equal to the two part Premier.  There are lots of crabs around to chew on your bait and I could feel them at work.  Now I only have to catch a fish!.   I just wanted to say I’m pleased with the product and very pleased with the customer service from CharkBait!  I plan on sharing my good fortune with friends at other forums!

CharkBait!
Sabiki Sticks

We've got another CharkBait exclusive for you, a new Sabiki fishing rod that incorporates a few innovations that might interest you. Our new rods are made to fish the type of bait we typically hope to bring up on a sabiki. They are a little stouter than what's been available and are available in six and seven foot lengths. Because of that they're fine for use catching mackerel, squid, sardines or whatever gets tempted by your offerings. The rods are two-piece, separating before the grip, and they now feature a nicer wrap design in our CharkBait red. black and silver colors. They have a metal top that won't crack from your sabiki weight's contact when stowing. They can be fished with spinning or conventional reels (though conventional gear is really what they are intended for). They even have a gimbal! They use a ferrule design that makes putting 'em together easy, and taking 'em apart less of a chore.  This is an imported item of very good quality.

Why own a Sabiki stick? Good question and there is a very good answer. Sabiki's can be a royal pain in the butt or anywhere else you happen to get hooked. While Sabiki's are not terribly expensive, it's a dumb waste to use 'em once and toss 'em away because they're tangled or a hazard aboard a boat with their small hooks dangling in the way of unsuspecting folks. With a Sabiki Rod you insert your line through the rod, it has a larger opening allowing you to reel the sabiki inside the stick and even leave your weight attached to the sabiki. They're a good thing to have aboard, and they'll pay for themselves very quickly since you won't have to break out a new sabiki each time you catch bait.

New! Based upon some feedback from some long rangers and folks in Florida looking for a larger diameter and heavier test bait making stick, we're introducing our Heavyweight bait maker. The new Sabiki stick features a wider shaft to handle some of the larger size sabiki rig hooks, can deal with 2/0 size just fine. It's also a much stouter pole, larger handle area, to deal with the pressure of larger bait. If you are trying to make a bunch of bigger size macks, this is the stick for you. The lighter pole is more than adequate for most folks, but if you are dealing with larger size Sabiki rigs and larger size bait, the new CharkBait heavy duty Sabiki pole is exactly what you need.

CharkBait!
Fixed Gaffs

Every boat needs at least one good gaff, and probably two or three are the norm. Each a bit different. We have a couple 4 inch gap fixed head gaffs for you. They're available in four or six foot lengths, made from fiberglass with a meaty stainless steel hook. It's a perfect size for dealing with schoolie tuna, albacore, yellowtail, halibut and most any fish in that 15-50# class...or better if you're lucky. We've opted for a bit sharper cut on our hooks than any you'll see  running up to $100 range. The gauge of the stainless steel is larger, the dual sharpened point offering greater penetration, as well as strength. Our shaft is also fairly heavy, testament to it's durability and strength. It's solid, not hollow, and the gaff features long lasting EVA handle material to provide a secure grip. If you are looking for a good quality all purpose gaff, and strength is a consideration, this powerhouse is a dandy value and something you'll enjoy having aboard the boat for a lot of years.
