Toro Tamer
Surf Explorer 270-2
The best
local surf rod built!
We've done it again folks, created the finest piece of it's type at
the best value.
The
new Toro Tamer Surf 270-2 is the best surf fishing rod on the market for
guys fishing SoCal (and a lot of other places). Here at our Huntington
Beach shop we are blessed to have two of the best surf fishermen on the
coast working with us, and their input has helped create a wonderful
tool for fishermen both here and elsewhere.
This little project has been six months in the making, but worth quite a
bit more than that. Locally guys tend to fish the surf targeting surf
perch and corbina, as well as other species. Inshore guys fish the
surfline as well as the bays, estuaries and harbors. Doing so results in
needs to cover a few line tests, so flexibility is a must. For the perch
(about the same size as a freshwater panfish) may require use of lines
down to 4# and lures like little Big Hammer curly tails (about 1 1/2"
worth of wiggle and 1/4 ounces of lead). Tossing small crankbaits is
also a technique used quite a bit, but line tests and rod actions may
increase for this use. One of the design parameters we set was to cover
both bases well, and that's exactly what we did with our new rods that
feature two tip sections to cover that range from 4-15# (and even 20).
The new rods are 2.7 meters (8.85 feet) in length, made from a quality
graphite blank, with very good quality components. We use a
spigot ferrule connection system, the right way to do things for this
test of line use. The rod guides are made for fishing Spectra or Super
Braid lines. The handle is a unique design, made from light weight and
sensitive cork - but also finished with a coating which will keep the
handle looking great for many years to come. The butt of the rod
features a hard plastic point and metal section for functional looks
allowing the butt to be stuck in the sand if need be. Even the reel seat
is an upgrade, with a golden metal trim ring which can act as a
secondary lock down for the reel seat so that you need not worry about
the reel slipping in the seat. Everything about this new rod is well
thought out, and the production quality is flat out excellent.
Taking things one more step further, the rods come in a nice cloth
bag...and a hard case rod tube to keep your rod in top shape when not in
use. This is indeed a premium rod, something that can command a price in
the $200-300 range. However, given that we are the producers, no distributor
or dealer margins are built into the pricing, we can offer the rods for $149
and claim the best value in a dedicated light line surf fishing rod.
There is no nicer piece on the market for what we do out here in the
surf. But, note that this rod can do much more with inshore and even
freshwater applications, and it's going to fill the bill for folks well
beyond SoCal who are looking for an excellent lighter line surf casting
rig.
One cautionary note: This rod comes with two tips, one an ULTRA LIGHT
Finesse tip that's made for fishing lines in the 4-6 lb range, perhaps
up to 8lb if used appropriately. Drags should be set at 25-30% of the
line test being fished. That means the light tip is made for dealing with
something like 1 lb worth of drag - NOT 4 lbs! This is not a rod
suitable for a person who intends to catch birds and then try to bring
them in with rod and reel, or "test" the rod with "not more than 4 lbs
of drag..." Yes, we have actually had two folks at our shop who broke
the ultra light tips, doing exactly those things. WE WILL NOT WARRANT NOR REPLACE A ROD TIP BECAUSE
OF MIS-USE. Each of these examples are mis-use of a rod. Given that we
are trying to offer a value to folks, if we were to cover such abuse
through warranty replacement then I'd have to increase the cost of this
rod to over $200, building in profits to cover abuse. So, we are saying
out-front, do not buy this rod if you don't know how to set your drag -
and certainly do not use the ultra-light tip. The Ultra light tip is for
ultra light lines, not heavy lines and heavy drags.
Common sense
is required for ownership of this fine fishing instrument, we will
not replace tips for this rod.
We will offer an accommodation price for
replacement, the same program Calstar and Seeker apply which is 1/2 the
price paid for the rod. Call us for details regarding warranty
replacement/accomodation. Please understand the reasons for this policy,
for us to do otherwise would increase the cost of this rod making it
beyond reach for most anglers.
Mark,
I recently purchased the Surf Explorer surf rod
and had a chance to test it out Friday evening. I went to Newport
and it was pretty windy but I gave it a shot and caught 1 fish for
my efforts. Shopping at your HB store is always a great
experience. Your crew, especially John, is friendly, very helpful
and there is no pressure to buy. Thanks and Keep it up.
Our Surf Explorer
has been updated for 2012. We've expanded the line to three
different line tests, an 8-12#, 15-20# and 25-30# class for both
spinning and conventional reel use. This is a very light and exotic travel rod for surf
fishing enthusiasts. Certainly it has additional applications,
but it's made for walking the beach and opportunistic fishing.
The rod is a four piece design, using the European Spigot
ferrule connections. It's 2.7 meters in length, almost 9 feet,
and now comes in a hard case for safe transport and storage. The rod can handle lure
weights of 20-100 grams. It's graphite and fiberglass constructed
for lightness, sensitivity and long term use. The guides are
lightweight, but capable of handling
Spectra lines. The handle
section is a bit long, in keeping with it's intended
application, and you can adjust the positioning of your reel to
optimize balance - easily moving the reel forward or back on the
rod. It's
parabolic action allows it to fish lighter and heavier and still
"feel" right, and now you have more choices for the
test being fished with the additional light and medium action
rods.
Fishing inshore species of fish can be an absolute
blast. Fishing inside the bays, the
breakwaters or nearshore waters can
result in 100 fish days (or nights). Folks doing this sort of thing often
will fish low profile reels like the Daiwa Coastal, Abu Revo, that sort of
gear is most common. But, others stick on a small Avet SX or Accurate BX
400N for their powerful drags and power. On the spinning side of things,
there are just as many options, maybe more. Penn's always produced some nice
saltwater reels, same story for Daiwa. Our inshore rods are made to match
with these types of reels and match well. The rods are made to be light in
the hands, but with plenty of power to help you turn the fish from their
hiding holes. The blanks are relatively thin for their test rating. But, not
to the point of being fragile or finicky. They have some backbone to 'em,
consistent levels of power for their line test rating.
The main goals in production for this series of rods were:
(1) Light Weight - Superior graphite blanks and cork grips provide that in
spades!
(2) Feel/Sensitivity - The cork does indeed help here, as does the blank
construction
(3) Compatibility - Both in terms of guide set used, to accommodate Spectra,
and the reel seats. Our Inshore Series rods will work with Avet reels. An SX
will mount just fine on these rods, and perform very well! (4) Economy - Factory Direct, compare to rods costing $50 more.
Our Inshore Series fishing rods are made to be
responsive, light in weight, durable and best of all, a true value combining
quality, price and performance. Weight is one key component of their
design, making very good use of strong graphite composite blanks and light
weight handle materials. These rods feature very nice cork grips for
excellent feel and very light weight - something that's becoming less common
given costs of production. The "C" or conventional rods offer a trigger
grip, the Spinning models do not. The reel seats on the "C" series
rods will
also accommodate Avet reel seats, not something that is typically the case
for trigger grip-style rods.
Line test rating: Really rods should be measured by
the appropriate drag setting used, that makes more sense than some of the
line test ratings you see on rods. We rate the rods for their optimum line
test use, at 25-30% of the line test measure for drag load. The table below
describes the rod's application range and optimum line test rating. All rods
are seven feet in length.

Inshore/Surf Diver Minnows
New smaller sizes
for inshore fishing!
Inshore
fishing is a blast, and it's accessible to most fishermen who
travel to the coast...or are lucky enough to live there! No boat
required to catch plenty of fish from the shore, and hitting the
harbors and bays brings even more options. Not impossible to
have those 100 fish days fishing the surf zone or watching the
tides to maximize your returns. Surf fishing is something that
does not demand a whole lot of preparation for, it gets back to
the basics of fishing, and it can be enjoyed by everyone in the
family. And, in many cases saltwater gear made for inshore
fishing also works quite well in freshwater (given corrosion and
conditions, saltwater designed gear can work in freshwater, but
it's not necessarily a great idea to use freshwater gear in the
salt...). Darn good way to spend some time by the beach,
and if you want to get more serious about...well, the returns
are there to justify the time spent - for sure!
For the past few months we've been working on additions to
our lineup for inshore anglers, and now we are quite proud to
come to market with some new lures made
for
this specific style of fishing. These new lures are all
internally weighted with a weight transfer system, all have
internal rattles to attract fish in water with less than perfect
visibility. All the new lures feature saltwater safe hooks, and
are available in both deep diver and shallow diver forms. We
have three sizes in the new Inshore/Surf lineup, 60mm, 75mm and
90mm (about 2.5", 3", 3.5"), and weight runs 6 gm, 10 gm, 16gm
(.21 oz, .35 oz., .6 oz). You won't find prettier lures on the
market, every detail is correct, and they swim predictably well.
All lures are floating divers, and they will get
bit...repeatedly.
These are very good quality, durable lures, designed to hold
up through many fish. Please do compare these to other popular
brands, and you'll see the value is quite apparent. Look at Yo-Zuri's
and Rapala's inshore lures, Lucky Craft and others. These are
well produced, lures of extraordinary value and they'll catch
fish just as well...if not better for about 50% the price of the
other guys.
