NEW
PRODUCT: Smaller size CB Swimmers and
Sliders - now available in 3/4 and 1 ounce
- PERFECT for when the targeted species
are feeding on the smaller stuff!
If you've
followed us for the past year or so, you've noticed that we
are engaged in production of several of our own exclusive
design products. All have been of good quality and value
since we've eliminated one or two levels of "markup" being
the manufacturer or direct designer and producer ourselves.
As well, the designs typically represent our own experience with
existing products, thoughts of how to do 'em better based
upon our experience or those of our clients. In the case of
the two lures below, we own the molds, they are our designs
and exclusive to CharkBait.
In keeping with our
design philosophy, we try to work with proven lure designs,
enhance upon those designs, and through our direct
involvement with production arrive at a consumer value
beyond what's expected or established. This is exactly what
we're up to with our new Metal Slider and Metal Swimmer
lures.
Our
new CharkBait Slider represents a significant upgrade in
terms of quality over what's been available in the past. The
CharkBait Slider is based upon the old Megabait lure and
similar designs that came on the market after Megabait went
out of business (P-Line's Laser Minnow, Braid's Metal
Marauder...). These lures deserved their following, they
caught a wide variety of fish, from tuna and yellowtail to
stripers and bass. On the West Coast, this style of lure has
been very effective fished on the slide for tuna - tossed
off the stern once a fish was picked off on a jigstrike. We
updated the old design, added some significant upgrades and
are able to supply a better value to our clients since we've
bypassed 2 to 3 layers of markup along the distribution
chain.
Features of the
CharkBait Metal Slider: 1. All lures are Triple Clear Coated for added
durability. (our literature says double coated, in actuality
it's triple coated)!
2. Our Metal Sliders feature both a MUSTAD 3X Treble Hook
AND MUSTAD Single Hook.
The trebles are a tad oversized given their
intended/potential application, the singles are more
stealthy in their size, still with plenty of gap for bigger
fish.
3. All lures are rigged with a WELDED RING on the
nose and quality split ring on the rear
4. All lures have a luminescent/glow underside for
added effectiveness on a deeper drop
5. Our Sliders are a bit broader at the shoulders, have a
bit more mass per inch of length allowing for a
little faster drop and greater strength.
John,
Attached is a pic. of a YFT caught on
one of your Irons. The Calstar 800H and Avet S/X made
short work of him. Thanks for everything!!!!
The Metal Swimmer is
another lure based upon an old favorite design of mine.
Years ago there was a lure marketed under the name Dymara.
This
lure was made in Europe, exported to Canada and then made
it's way into the USA. As a result the lure was pretty
expensive compared to the megabait product. But, it had a
unique and highly effective quality which helped it get bit.
There was a soft "S" shape curve to the lure which proved
very effective when fished on the drop. You could fish the
lure on the slide, but it's best effect was on the drop and
yoyo'd coming back up to the surface. I'd cast the lure out,
keep a feel for the drop of the jig, to tell if it had been
hammered, and then retrieved in a drop and crank fashion.
The lure got bit well for me, and a lot of other guys too.
Sadly, the lure stopped being imported, but I had a few left
in my tackle box...well actually only three and sacrificed
one for this project.
Features of the
CharkBait Metal Swimmer: 1. All lures are Triple Clear Coated for added
durability
2. All lures come with both MUSTAD Single and Treble
Hooks
3. All lures are rigged with a WELDED RING on the
nose and quality split ring on the rear
4. All lures have a luminescent/glow underside for
added effectiveness on a deeper drop
5. Our Swimmers have a soft "S" curve to them for a
bit of flutter on the drop
Toro Tamer
® Wounded Swimmer
New Lure for Wahoo
& Tuna!
The new version of our
popular Wounded Swimmer is into it's second generation. This
lure was based upon an old SPRO design which was discontinued a
few years back. Then, it was a general purpose
lure,
mostly popular in the smaller sizes. But, upon it being
discontinued we made a large purchase and one of our clients
discovered it's strength as a wahoo lure. Based upon his
experience (goes by the nickname Planet, a PhD-type
teaching and researching at a CA university between fishing
trips), we brought the piece back as a CharkBait lure a
couple years ago in two large sizes and it did very, very well
for wahoo, yellowfin tuna and yellowtail (among other species).
It did extraordinarily well for the "skins."
In this update
we've continued with the improvements made before, and added
something for the guys targeting larger, harder pulling fish
like tuna and wahoo. Now the lures have a ball bearing swivel as
the attachment point for the hook, and we've added an oversized
welded ring at the nose instead of the split ring for even
better action from the lure. Both improvements will provide
anglers with a better performance, and our thru wire
construction and less brittle body (than the old SPRO) means the
lure can survive longer in the real world encounters with a hard gelcoat on a boat without catastrophic cracking. It can happen,
but it takes far more punishment than the old SPRO did, and
we've made it a better lure for catching wahoo and tuna.
Yep,
we made a better mousetrap - make that fish trap. We have
made the lures five productive colors, two sizes, 150 and 100
gram weights, 6 1/4 & 5 1/2 inches respectively. They have a
very nice curve which provides some added action on the
retrieve, and upon the drop mimics a stunned bait as it drops in
a flutter. The lures are exceptional, and all the colors are
excellent in attracting attention from the targeted species. The
big eyes also add to their realistic
appearance and attention
getting, fish attracting performance. These are some of the best
wahoo and tuna lures you'll find. They can be fished on the
slide as well as cast and retrieve mode. The price went up a tad
from the earlier production, but the value is in the upgrade
lures without a doubt. Both the new hook, welded ring and swivel
will make these lures even better than their predecessor, and
those were darn good lures with lots of fish to their credit.
CharkBait's Slash
- Cast and Rip Bait For Wahoo
and more...
Our
Slash jig can be fished a couple ways, for great
effect. For our long range fishermen, it's a
GREAT wahoo lure. For deepwater enthusiasts it's
a deep water tuna jig with excellent action on
the drop and wind. Having said that, the thing
casts great and we rig it properly with a higher
quality Mustad hook and a ball bearing swivel
(ours even points the right way...) attached
with welded rings. Our colors and finish are top
quality. While it will bring in wahoo when they
are around, don't be afraid to jig it for tuna
and yellowtail. If your fishing trip heads to
Alijos you've got a great wahoo lure, but if it
shifts gears and moves to Cedros fine, you've
got the right lure for yellowtail. If instead
you hit the banks for rockfish, you've still got
an effective lure on your hands. One lure, fits
a few applications, and a few different styles
of fishing.
Our slash bait
is available in FIVE sizes: 80 gm,
2.8 oz, 5" 100 gm, 3.5 oz, 5 1/2"
150 gm, 5.29 oz, 6 1/2"
300 gm, 10.6 oz
/180mm, 7" 400 gm, 14.11 oz /200mm,
8"
This versatile
lure can be fished several ways, cast and
retrieve, vertical yo-yo style jigging,
and speed jigging. There is a very slight
curve to the lure, allowing a bit more
action on the drop and as the lure is
bounced up. It's important to keep a good
contact on the lure if you're fishing
yo-yo style for a couple reasons. First,
you won't know you've been bitten unless
you've got contact with the lure, secondly
the lure can foul itself if you don't
offer some control of its accent or
descent.
Based upon client feedback, we've expanded
this series of lures. Now we have two new
LARGE size jigs to add to the assortment.
The new 300 and 400 gram sizes are perfect
for dealing with better grade tuna when
they're holding deep. Of course they'll
also do a number on yellowtail and wahoo
if you need to go down to get 'em. Given
the deeper water application, we've added
our Illuminata feature, the new LARGE size
jigs have a recess for use of a 4.5mm
light stick. Go deep, get noticed and
get bit!
Toro Tamer Wahoo Ripper
- Cast and Rip Bait For Wahoo
and more...
For
2012 the Wahoo Ripper will be a Toro Tamer product. For this production we've introduced a
couple of changes from our first generation
product. The new lures feature a larger welded
ring so there's more swing to the jig. We've
upgraded the hook, which was already excellent on
this product. And, the prism tape is applied to
both sides of the lure and is non-graduated. These
are the changes, but some things stayed the same.
Lure weight is still 125 and 200 grams, in both
chrome and gold. They are still made from solid
BRASS so they drop fast and are super strong.
Here's the downside, the cost of brass is what put
the larger 5 and 7 ounce Krocodile spoons out of
production - those lures would have ended up
costing $30 or more...at dealer cost, given the
price
of the brass. No matter the expense, BRASS IS THE
KEY TO THIS LURE!
Our new production
using brass carries a higher
cost than they used to, based upon raw materials.
We did not change to a cheaper metal, because
changing the lure changes the sink rate and that
kills the lure's fish catching ability. Brass IS
HEAVIER, IT SINKS FASTER AND GETS BIT BETTER.
The original
lures name represented their weight in grams, the
model 200 and 125 referred to their gram weight,
200 and 125 gm. There's a
reason we don't go to steel for the product, it's
simply not as good. The lures need to be produced from
brass - just like the Krocs. When the original
heavy 7, 5, 3 oz Krocodile spoons were copied and
made with anything other than brass they failed to
catch fish as well. They weren't as good as the
original!
A similar
"metal" copy of the old Raider design would weight
2 ounces less than the original model 200 jig.
That's about 60 grams less, that's over 25% off
the lure's weight! That's HUGE because it
results in slower sink rates. A lesser metal copy
of the original brass lure is simply not as good,
it's NOT THE SAME LURE. It's an ineffective lure
in comparison to the original. It may catch a few
fish, but it won't be the producer the original
lure was.
History: the
original Raider was produced by a company that
lost their trade name...and then went out of
business. They were an Aussie firm, very nice guy
owned the company and designed
the
lure back in 1993 (Perry See Hoe). They were
produced in Australia and later in Thailand. They
had to change their name to Spanyid in the USA
after losing their trade name.... They went out of
business in 2008, I believe. (Perry left the firm
at that point). There are no original raider lures
on the market these days, though there is a firm
producing lures under that trade name, that lure
is not made of brass and weighs over 25% less than
the originals. We've tried to follow the original
specifications, make some improvements, and
maintain the right materials, sink rates, weights,
and effectiveness.
Price on the new
Toro Tamer Wahoo Ripper is a bit higher in 2012, but also understand it's the
only game in town and we are doing all we can to
keep the costs down for our clients, while still
offering the closest thing to the original lure. Since we are
factory direct we can hold prices down better,
absorb more of that raw materials cost increase
than any other version of this lure. In truth, we
considered using other materials, or simply not
producing ourselves. If they
weren't such a basic staple on the long range
scene we might have given up, too. But, the fact
is, these are a go-to bait for wahoo, arguably the
most popular jig ever made for the 'hoo. And, we
wanted to keep 'em alive in their true form.
Well, here's another new one that's sure to
please. Many years ago there was a West Coast
lure like this, made out in Riverside, CA.
That product was a basic bread-and-butter lure
for bonito, barracuda and even albacore on the
slide (before we ever referred to "slide"
fish'n). Well, it disappeared from our local
market, probably a decade or so ago, and that
was a sad state of affairs. Those lucky enough
to have a couple in their tackle boxes guarded
'em, even rigging with wire so they wouldn't
loose 'em to toothy critters. For most of us,
that old lure was more useful than a Krocodile
Spoon for getting bit. It did very well fished
from boat or surf, and I'm sure some of our
East Coast clients recognize the lure's
capability in attracting everything from
striped bass to bluefish. For those traveling
to Baja, looking to do some inshore work and
surf fishing, this lure is a sure bet winner
and one you will not want to be without -
that's a promise.
The new Barri-Bomb comes
in four flavors and four sizes. The lures
feature a prism tape to the rear angled facet,
the front angled has no tape. The lures are
rigged with 2X treble hooks on split rings
front and rear. Sizes range from 20 gm or 3/4
ounces, 30 gm - 1 oz, 40 gm - 1.5 oz, 70 gm
2.5 ounces. And, colors are silver prism, gold
prism, blue prism and green prism on chrome
bodies. Frankly, color is almost a secondary
consideration, the lures fish darn well with
no prism tape. But, there are those days when
color does indeed make a difference.
Suggestion, grab a pack
of the tiny QuickRig swivels or similar AFW
micro swivels to attach to the split ring to
take greater advantage of the lures action. I
was messing around with this last week while
fishing San Clemente for bonito and calico
bass with my son, really was a nice way to
work the lure at faster retrieves - and that's
what the fish seemed to like best that day.
