Ballyhood is owned by Darrell Primrose, a former Cabo sportfishing fleet owner, successful billfish tournament angler and all around nice guy. Darrell makes his lures up the street from me (well maybe 10 miles) and doesn't seem to mind me watching him build his products. Yep, they all are hand crafted fish-cathers, made in Southern California. Ballyhood offers lures suitable for tuna, wahoo, sailfish, dorado, marlin and sharks. There are several new additions posted below, such as the Wahoo Express you'll want drag around, for sure. Darrell was the first manufacturer I did business with when I started CharkBait. I'd used his shark lures, and liked 'em. He took a chance and worked with me, and provided a lot of good advice along the way. So, I owe him a good deal of gratitude. And, I also am amazed at all the new products he's introduced over the last year or so. Darrell continues to bring out really innovative lures, and proven fish catchers. The quality of finish is quite good, indicitive of the personal attention each lure receives from Darrell. The lures featured are made in So.Cal. by hand. Ballyhood's Wahoo Express

This one's not a casting bomb unless you're a direct descendent of Conan the Barbarian. It's weighty, designed for trolling rather than casting. But, it warrants placement here on the 'hoo page due to both it's design and tremendous success. This winner was influenced by the knowledgeable contributions of wahoo expert Dr. Ray Waldner of West Palm Beach, Florida and Twig Tolle, Jr., Sportfishing Magazine. The Wahoo Express high speed sub-surface lure weighs in a 14 ounces and 9" overall length and has a high polished 1" diameter bullet head with large goggle eyes. The skirts are made of double mylar in several excellent patterns. The Express comes expertly rigged with stainless steel wire, 9/0 stainless steel Mustad 95160 hook, black Sampo swivel, plus a #3-1/2 hamered nickel willow leaf spinner blade.

Dorado Slammers - Chuggers

Ballyhood has another winner, the Dorado Slammers trolling lures. I was over talking with Darrell Primrose, Ballyhood's owner, the other day and noticed something new. They've come up with a great new fish catching tool with their new Soft Head Lures. Made from molded polyvinyl chloride, the lures have perfectly clear heads with extreme durability. The lures also have some great molded-in refraction "eyes". The Slammer measures 5-6" overall length, with a 3/4" diameter concave head which makes this lure jump and splash and create smoke like few lures this size.

The Bally Birdie

Here's a new favorite toy. One of the hot tickets down south and on the East Coast is using "birds" to attract fish...not the kind that fly around, but rather a device placed in front of a feather used to create some turbulence, and draw strikes to the following bait. The BallyBirdie is a 9 inch soft Ballyhood head and skirt rigged with 130 lb. mono, and snap swivel behind the lures head (to attach your lure and leader) and a quality swivel running away from the lure to attach to your main line. Your trolling lure runs behind the splashing bird from about 6 to 12 feet for optimal results. Big Game Lures: Lots of record catches have been posted with these lures. Ballyhood is rapidly establishing quite a name among East Cape marlin, wahoo, and tuna enthusiasts for reliably producing fish. Their reputation was first established by folks targeting sharks, in a strange turn of events, some darn "carp" (marlin) jumped on the trolling lures like the Bally Down and Top Gun. Bally expanded their offering to include a Jr. model to go after tuna and wahoo. You can attach a bait by pinning through the nose of the lures, or you can use as is with the attached skirt as an attractor. The skirts are something the new owner of Ballyhood has added to these unique baits. Use them with or without a pinned bait; both ways are productive, but most guys stick in the mack.

There are three models we stock. The Deep Diver has a large weight attached directly to the head and will get down 25'-35' slow trolled at less than 5 knots. The Bally-Down can be splashed on the surface and/or used with a downrigger to reach the deep feeders. This is a deadly pattern with our big threshers and marlin. Both of these lures are rigged with skirts, 300 pound 49 strand aircraft cable, 2 9/0 stainless hooks (trap style) and 600 lb. Sampo swivels. The third item is a new smaller version of the Bally Deep Diver which can be trolled with or without an attached bait. It's 10 inches in length and can troll 15' to 25' below the surface. Rigging consists of 22" of 49 strand stainless wire, stainless steel 8/0 hook, 300 lb. Sampo swivel. All products are quality rigged!

They put together lures with about all the standard colors you can name. However, they are often experimenting. On my weekly visits to the factory, if I see something neat I usually buy it. New Ballyhood Shark'n Lures

There's more to fishing than tuna and bass. There are sharks, big ones, one's with attitude, leapers, jumpers, and racers. The thing is you just don't know what sort of attitude a shark is going to have until you've got one on the hook. They aren't as temperature dependent, especially predatory beasts like makos. They can elevate their body temp. for great feeding effect. Here's a couple must haves for the shark crowd.

The Mako Madness lure is used as a slow surface troller. Attach a bait on the hook, live or a strip, and drag the lure around for a while. If you come across a temp break, work it. SOFT IRON

Ballyhood's variant on a CharkBait theme..

We've been introducing folks to fishing a unique combination of soft tube squid and jig for several years. My buddy Darrell, the owner of Ballyhood, must have been taking notes a few months ago when he was over because he came out with a nice variant of our squid-n-jig. Ballyhood has a new lure they call a Soft Iron.

The new lures is weighted inside the soft bodied squid. It's also rigged with a nice single hook and swivel at the tail for attaching your line. You can cast it, troll it, work it off the bottom, bounce-ball it... You can even stick a small light stick into the squirt to make it really glow when it's down deep. We include one stick with your lure. We have replacement packs on our Making Bait page. It's also comes with a better hook. So, I guess we've got some competition between suppliers. Competition is a good thing for the consumer.

If you want to enhance this lure's performance even more, visit our Scents page and grab a small jar of the Smelly Jelly squid flavor scent. The small container will last you a long time, couple seasons for most guys, and the squid will be even more attractive to your quarry.
