CharkBait Custom Rods

RainShadow Rods

RainShadow blanks have been gaining a very supportive audience in the custom rod building world. The firm that brings these blanks to market also is the worldwide distributor for ALPS rod building components, guides, reel seats, etc. They know rods, they are astute and dedicated to bringing quality to the market. They have a very strong design team at work, and their blanks show the knowledge gained through listening to the most demanding rod builders in the world. As a consequence of their listening they have a very broad range of blanks in their catalog, made for specific purposes. We've been hearing more and more from folks asking if we'd build rods from these well proven blanks. Given some shortcomings in terms of production from our traditional West Coast suppliers like Seeker and Calstar in 2014 we decided that we should learn more ourselves, pull on some blanks, do some talking to both anglers and the folks behind RainShadow. We did our homework, and thankfully we are associated with one of the better rod builders in SoCal (SaltyDog) and asked him to produce several models of rods which are made for our style of fishing.

We are taking our new RainShadow rod project into two distinct areas: first traditional offshore oriented rods and secondly high end inshore bass rods.

Offshore Rods:
For our offshore designs, the rods are made using RC series blanks which feature use of both RX6/E-Glass materials. They are a blend of graphite and fiberglass, similar to what we're familiar with from Seeker and Calstar for their higher end products. You can see the transition, more graphite used in the aft/butt section of the rod to help reduce weight, then transitioning to E-Glass through the mid to tip section. Made in this manner you gain light weight plus extended long term durability and reliability in through the tip. 'Glass really offers greater impact strength in the tip section, that's the big benefit. In the image to the right you can see the transition between materials. The rods are not brittle, they are light and VERY durable performers. We use XXNLG guides, of course made for fishing super braid, the newer soft gimbal butts and composite reels seats on the lighter 7 foot rods, metal gimbals with aluminum reel seat for the heavier sticks. For the deckhand style long rods, sine cord us used instead of cork tape - for a more durable grip area while still keeping the weight down, standard bulb caps for the butt.  The actions will feel quite familiar to those who have fished Calstar Grafighters, but they are a bit lighter and the quality of the finished rod is nicer, nicer wraps with excellent components. It would be fair to say these are nice updates to the current standard.

The light and medium test rods, 70L and 70M make use of the soft gimbal butt, while the 84H 40-60# rod uses a metal gimbal.

Reel seats for the seven foot rods incorporate either composite or metal seats. To keep weight to a minimum the 70L and M make use of composite materials, while the heavy 40-60# stick has a metal seat.

The 70L and 70M make use of a composite reel seat, the 84H uses the dual lock down Alps reel seat.

Wraps all incorporate double and triple wrap guides in a subtle gold metalic finish. Alps XXNLG guides are used for these rods - braid/Spectra safe, durable and strong.

For the deckhand rod 80M note the detail work above the grip, and sine cord is used rather than cork tape for the handle material, great durability with this non-slip finish.

As mentioned, you will note that these blanks incorporate graphite more generously in the butt section, transitioning to fiberglass through the tip to increase durability as well as lighten the rods. You can see the transition in the image above.

CharkStraps & CharkWraps

Two new items from us, not necessarily the most creative or revolutionary products we've ever come up with, but nonetheless they are useful and they are a bit different than what's available from others.

Our RodWraps are an upgrade from the StickJackets we've carried for several years. We've made ours a bit larger in diameter so that they will accommodate larger saltwater guides, even larger spinning guides. The StickJackets were really made for freshwater use, sized accordingly but we used their spinning models for our application. Now we've got 'em made our way. We've reinforced the top with a leatherette end piece and metal grommet which can be used to hang rods, and we've increased the diameter to allow your rods, even those using larger AFTCO wind-on roller guides or larger size spinning guides to fit. The Wraps are about 5 feet in length, will extend down the rod into the handle material of most rods. They are not made to cover the entire rod, only that portion it's designed to protect - the blank, the finish, the guides.

These wraps are all that I've been using now for the past few years. I like the fact that I can use them for storage protection, travel protection as well as leave 'em on my rods on the boat. They are breathable and they don't absorb moisture. So, they help me protect my rods when they're bundled up once the fishing is over. On most long range trips out of San Diego, you move your rods onto the boat and off the boat all bundled up. They may stay that way overnight on the boat as well. For a cloth sock, that's no good. So, you can write off any protection of the rod. With these things you do get that protection when you need it most. I even leave them on my rods when I get home. I'll spray off the rod wraps while still on the rod, loosening any accumulated saltwater in the process. Then I'll take off the wraps, clean the rods more thoroughly and allow them to dry. Use of a cleaner like Penn's Rod and Reel cleaner for that, and you've got things in great shape for your next trip and your gear will stay in new condition.

The other product we have for rod organization are our CharkWraps. These are great for bundling your rods together for transport or storage. You can secure up to a half dozen rods with these things. Nice thing about ours verses some others, they are made from a softer foam/rubber material so they'll never scratch up your rods. Unlike some similar products I've seen, we made it a point to include three different sizes (which makes sense since you'll use all three at different positions on your bundled rods from the tip to near the reel seat). So, you get three straps, all with Velcro through their length to handle most any size bundle of rods you'll be totting, from 2 to 6 or more rods.
