Inshore
fishing is a blast, and it's accessible to most fishermen who
travel to the coast...or are lucky enough to live there! No boat
required to catch plenty of fish from the shore, and hitting the
harbors and bays brings even more options. Not impossible to
have those 100 fish days fishing the surf zone or watching the
tides to maximize your returns. Surf fishing is something that
does not demand a whole lot of preparation for, it gets back to
the basics of fishing, and it can be enjoyed by everyone in the
family. And, in many cases saltwater gear made for inshore
fishing also works quite well in freshwater (given corrosion and
conditions, saltwater designed gear can work in freshwater, but
it's not necessarily a great idea to use freshwater gear in the
salt...). Darn good way to spend some time by the beach,
and if you want to get more serious about...well, the returns
are there to justify the time spent - for sure!
For the past few months we've been working on additions to
our lineup for inshore anglers, and now we are quite proud to
come to market with some new lures made
for
this specific style of fishing. These new lures are all
internally weighted with a weight transfer system, all have
internal rattles to attract fish in water with less than perfect
visibility. All the new lures feature saltwater safe hooks, and
are available in both deep diver and shallow diver forms. We
have three sizes in the new Inshore/Surf lineup, 60mm, 75mm and
90mm (about 2.5", 3", 3.5"), and weight runs 6 gm, 10 gm, 16gm
(.21 oz, .35 oz., .6 oz). You won't find prettier lures on the
market, every detail is correct, and they swim predictably well.
All lures are floating divers, and they will get
bit...repeatedly.
These are very good quality, durable lures, designed to hold
up through many fish. Please do compare these to other popular
brands, and you'll see the value is quite apparent. Look at Yo-Zuri's
and Rapala's inshore lures, Lucky Craft and others. These are
well produced, lures of extraordinary value and they'll catch
fish just as well...if not better for about 50% the price of the
other guys.
Yellowtail Coffin Nail Stick Bait!
New Series of Swimming Lures
Here's
another superior lure from CharkBait, our new slim bodied
StickBait. This one's going to make a lot of guys very happy
indeed, and lead to a lot of fish taken, no doubt about it.
The new StickBaits feature a unique weighting system,
they'll cast like bullets and come to rest near neutral. See
some fish breaking the surface, toss one out and you'll get
a good return for the effort. Fishing the surf, the smaller
sized lures will bring in a lot of different species, and
they'll cast well, too. Working the flats, the fish will
move to these new lures just fine, and they'll hammer 'em.
There are three models in this series of lures, two
featuring two treble hooks, and one with three. The finish
on these lures is something you'll really appreciate, again,
there are no better lures on the market anywhere near their
price - that is a lead pipe promise.
Our
StickBaits use an internal weight system. On the larger size
lure pictured you'll note both small and large steel
weights. The larger weights are used to do a couple
things. First off, they shift position, moving to the rear
for longer casts, then towards the front of the lure upon
retrieve for a
stable come-back with weight forward assisted
depth tracking. The also create a "rattle" upon retrieve,
and the larger size creates a lower frequency sound.
The smaller bb's are there for the sound, their rattle is a
higher frequency. Both, entice a predator's interest, and
the benefit of the lower frequency sound is greater sonic
distance under water. This dual attraction, coupled with
internal chambering, structural strength, quality hooks and
excellent casting properties with superior fish attention
stimulating finishes produce a super new lure that's very
effective!

We've already had local guys land some nice
halibut fishing the beach, as well as some Serf Perch at the
shore (who surprised the anglers by targeting what one would
think would be an oversized lure for a fish with such a
small mouth. The Corbina was a nice surprise for the angler
tossing the lure for the first time. They're a dandy lure,
and great casters, too!

The Toro
Tamer Subsurface Swimmer: You may be aware of a similar lure that's been on the
Japanese market and gained some following in this country (shibuki).
That piece proved effective as a casting lure and as a
trolled lure, and cost a good $50 unrigged! Pricing was a
function of a few things, among them a good old boy network
created by the Japanese firm selling them. They didn't take
much of an interest in anyone but a chosen few selling them
on this side of the pond. That's a restraint of competition
in my humble opinion, and helps explain the high price of
the lure. As you can see, we have a broader selection of colors
available, similar design, quality built to withstand
punishment from the toughest fish. The weight and length is the same as the
more expensive Japanese import. We are making these
wonderful lures available both rigged and unrigged. The
first ones available are the unrigged lures. Our rigged
lures will feature quality Mustad treble hooks of
appropriate strength. The unrigged lures have been used by
guys with both trebles and single hooks.
The lures are great
casters, with some heft to them and a unique internal
magnetic weight
transfer system that aids in the cast and provides a
sonic attraction as well. They are thru-wired for extra strength. The lures
are 80 grams (~3 ounces) in weight and 20 cm long (7.9").
They will dive up to 2 meters ~ 6 feet and are rated for a
50 kg (100#) breaking strength. You'll note the quality of
construction upon inspection, and we encourage you to
compare these lures to any on the market.
These lures have taken
tuna, some big ones during our evaluation stage this past
season, as well as yellowtail and many other species of
fish. They will also surprise you with their ability to
troll effectively, partially as a result of the stabilizing
dorsal fin. While they were designed for big fish, they'll
prove very effective on smaller fish - with some of our
local guys using them to great effect on BIG calico bass.
The lures are very well overbuilt.
Unrigged lures ordered from this page will come with 3
300#+ test rings. Click on the image to examine more

Note the magnetic weight transfer system with rear pad
at the tail to prevent cracking of lure, and the
balancing weight rear.
Of course the lures are properly thru wired and can
well handle over 100# of stress, meaning there is NO
issue dealing with larger grade tuna and
appropriately HIGH drag settings.
The lures offered here, our
Floating Diver Minnow Series Yellowtail Coffin Nails, can be effectively used
as cast and retrieve baits - in both shallow and deep
diver forms. In 2012 we expanded this series to include
some shallow divers and a BIG Deep Diver designed for
trolling duty. Most of the lures in this series make use
of good quality VMC 3X hooks, and the lures are
thru-wired for greater strength, necessary when tangling
with better grade fish. That's something they will be
doing a lot of, they're proven fish catching designs and
given that we are the direct producer we're able to bring
these great lures to you at a savings of darn close to 50%.
The closest competing lure in terms of design and shape
retails at something darn close to $20, and we offer them
at $17 - compare that to our Diver Minnow Medium 210mm
size which we offer at $12. Like our Metal Swimmers and Metal Sliders,
we also upgrade some things that we think important. In
this case, we added SOLID rings to the nose of the lures.
That sure beats using a loop for your tie-off or the bulk
and weight of a snap. (please note the
solid rings on the lures - photo below)
The
medium deep diving lure was our first release, and it
caught a lot of fish for folks. The only downside to that
floating/diving lure was that some folks tried to run it
as a trolling lure on 50# line. That's not at all what the
lure was designed to do. It's a casting lure. It can be
used on the troll, but with light line up to 20# or with
50# Spectra. So, almost as soon as we began selling the
210 Diver Minnow, we went to work to make a more dedicated
trolling lure of much LARGER size - that's our 270mm Deep
Diver, and that piece will become something you'll be very
impressed dragging in Baja. For yellowtail, this is my
favorite size lure. You can filter through the pesky
mackerel and species you really don't want to hook by
trolling a larger lure, and you tend to bring in better
quality fish, too! Rounding out the line even more, we
added two shallow divers to the line-up. These lures will
fill the bill for folks fishing from the surf, inshore or
offshore.
For
2012 we've added some new colors and sizes and shallow
divers to this series of lure. The two new shallow divers
run 5.5 inches and 4 inches in length, and weigh 1.5 and 1
ounces. The new sizes are excellent choices for
folks
fishing the surf,
shore, inshore and at breezing fish near
structure. They cast great, and are beautiful pieces.
We're running VMC 3X hooks on the larger size, and 2X
VMC's on the little fellows.
These lures are best used as
either a cast and retrieve bait OR a light line trolling
lure. By light line, I mean 20# mono or 50# Spectra. Heavier line will reduce
their tracking and negatively effect depth. The medium and
small size lures are a floating diver style lure, made for
cast and retrieve applications. For the troll, please
go with the LARGE 270mm lures listed below. These are made
for exactly that application, prospecting for better grade
yellowtail and tuna.

Here's an image of the internals of our shallow
diver, note the weight system which helps casting
distance and acts as a sonic attractor. The deep
divers do not have the same weight transfer system,
they use a forward weight as well as balancing
internal weights.
They are back, after a
five year absence! They're back, and they're better.
Our new lures are available in five different color
patterns, each a bread and butter color that's required for
different conditions in different destinations. While we
call 'em Yellowtail Coffin Nails, don't let that make you
think they are that species dependent. They're not. They'll
take all sorts of game fish. Following bird activity,
surfacing fish, trolling these lures will generate some
attention and solid strikes. If the fish are holding deep,
then our Double Deep model is what's called for. Same if the
expectation is the larger grade fish and you don't want to
sort through the shorts.
Our Double
Deep model is 180 mm long and 90 gm (10" with bill, 7"
without, and 3.17 oz in weight). Our larger Double Deep
lures are thru wired for added strength and security. This model also features a two line
attachment points and under the bill there's a connecting
point to attach a sinker for even greater depth. You can use
a tear-drop style weight for this purpose. It's not
required, but if you need more depth here's a way to achieve
even greater it easily.
