What a charter, certainly one of the best 4 day'rs we've had, and
our 4 day Red Rooster trip is always a great one. Before I get into
the fishing and the crew, let me say a couple words about the food.
The Rooster has always had good grub, but Rick and team have stepped
things up quite a bit in terms of sophistication and presentation.
Ah, I mean the grub was even better than usual and that's saying
quite a bit. We started out with thick juicy steaks cooked to
perfection, with a great sauce and veggies, and ended up with prime
rib made perfectly. All meals were great, and the snacks,
breakfasts, lunches were all tremendous. I'm glad I was hitting the
gym prior to the trip. In 4 days I gained 5 pounds... These were
pounds I don't mind working back off, well worth the exercise to
come. And, I get to go on the 8 day'r this year too. Life is good!
Okay, now for the fishing... Day one, sloppy conditions turned
great, quickly. Before the fishing turned on, I had a little
accident. While at the stern on trolling duty I got slammed by a
crashing wave. I got soaked, 6 cups of water in my left boot alone.
So, the rest of that day I was fishing with one boot and one tennis
shoe. Based on the fishing, I think I'll continue this as a good
luck tradition going forward.
Day one, the first bite was epoc, and it did not slow down all
day long. We caught 243 yellowfin tuna and 112 bluefin tuna along
with 5 dorado on the first day. The fish weighed up to 30#, most in
the low and mid 20's. Nothing large, but they were plentiful and a
guy could try different things and if something didn't work, no
problem more opportunities were just a cast away. For the second
day's fishing we landed 296 quality yellowtail off Cedros Island.
The last stop, 126 yellowtail in
about 1/2 hour! To finish the trip, we headed back offshore to find
the right kelp paddy for some more dorado. We found a few, but
nothing like we had hoped. We scored about 8 of 'em for the charter,
and did not find that last honey hole. We did find more tuna, but in
truth our numbers were already achieved and there wasn't much need
to take more fish - heck, we didn't have any place to put 'em!
