Charkbait/Red Rooster III 8 Day Scores Cows !!!
John
here, just back off our Charkbait Red Rooster 8 day and what a
trip it was. After we loaded up 27 passengers and the gear,
stopping at the bait receiver to tank-up with hot sardine and
great weather we headed out of Point Loma San Diego bombing down
for the Ridge.
Day 1 - We arrived at the Ridge about 1:30pm Captain Joe announced
over the speaker, "Theres a nice ball of yellowtail coming under
the boat" it was game on right from the start. Very nice grade of
fish 20lbs+ on yo-yo iron and flylined sardine or dropper loop 40
and 50lb test was the ticket and we landed 78 nice yellowtail and
a bonus 60lb grouper and it was time for dinner.
Day 2 - At 4:30 am we where already hooking yellowfin tuna 15 to
35lbs and that went on for 4 hours at a steady pick on these good
school size yellowfin tuna. After a few hours of that we went
trolling for wahoo and no sign of the skinnies so we anchored and
here came the tuna, yellowtail all you wanted. That after noon we
moved up and down the ridge anchoring and catching yellows and
yellowfin tuna we ended the day with 187 tuna up to 40lbs and 16
yellowtail.
Day 3 - After a great dinner last night myself a Captain Joe
talked to the rest of tha anglers about heading to Mag Bay to fish
the cow yellowfin tuna everyone agreed and off we went to cow
town.
Wow
what a day no kite fish but we ended up with 7 fish over 100lbs
and 3 of those well over 200lbs.
Most
of the 8 day trips never see a cow size tuna but we took the
chance and it payed off for some of the anglers.
Having the right gear and tackle was key.
Couple of the bigger tuna came on the baloon rig and the others on
flyline sardine 135lb test and 6/0 or 7/0 circle hook.
Charkbait would like to congratulate the following:
Nestor Murillo 1st place JP (Jackpot) 276.3, Oscar Muela 2nd place
JP 248.1, Chris Gault 3rd place JP 244.6,
Robert Young 175.4, David Carillo 158.3, Thinh Cao 149.4, and Ted
Lee 148.5.
4th and 5th Days - We continued to look at the ridge for more
yellowtail and tuna and astop on some nice grouper we ended the
trip with a shot at Cedros fro another 100 yellow tail and
the last morning of the trip we thru on some nice rockfish Reds,
Lings, sheephead.
All-in-All the 8 day Charkbait/Red Rooster trip was a grand
sucsess with a great bunch of folks, and what a fantastic fishing
platform the Rooster is. Thank you to the awsome crew and captain,
great food and I mean the food just kept coming i think I gained a
couple lbs on this one.
